WELCOME

ROZ BIRD COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR

If you would like to find out more please visit our website: or follow us

Welcome Exciting times at Silverstone ParkAs you may know, MEPC is leading an important piece of research for the region and for the UK economy – a Cluster Report – to map business activity in the high-performance technology and motorsport (HPT&M) cluster in and around Silverstone.

Barclays and PwC have joined the Motorsports Industry Association, the two district councils, two county councils and the three local LEPs in sponsoring the report which, due for publication next March, could help attract significant investment plus Government support for the region’s HPT&M companies.

The phrase ‘HPT&M’ means far more than just motorsport, although motorsport is an important activity within the cluster. HPT&M includes everything from software design to advanced engineering and everything in between including electronics, design, manufacturing, R&D and the professional service companies that support these activities in sectors including aerospace, medical devices, defence, marine and motorsport.

If you are based in Buckinghamshire and operate in one of these sectors then we would like to encourage you to enter your business for the new HPT&M award that we have created, working with Buckinghamshire Business First. The winner will be announced at 2016’s Buckinghamshire Business Awards.

MEPC has welcomed a number of new companies to Silverstone Park during 2015 including AMI-CON, BBR International managing the Nissan LMP1 team, and Fyshe. If you are a growing business requiring anything from a small flexible office through to an industrial unit or headquarters building then please do contact us. MEPC is creating a global business destination for HPT&M companies – a place that will impress your clients and motivate your staff.

FIBONACCI SOFTWARE ‘AT FOREFRONT’ OF NATIONAL HEALTH CARE

FIBONACCI SOFTWARE ‘AT FOREFRONT’ OF NATIONAL HEALTH CARE

The company, based inside Silverstone Park’s Innovation Centre, has just seen its latest product put into action by the Wolverhampton Clinical Commissioning Group.

“Ultimately this is the latest evolution of what we have been doing for about ten years,” says Fibonacci Director Keith Williams.

“The implementation project is under way at Wolverhampton and, we believe, it is at the forefront of what any NHS trust is doing in England. Clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) are watching what Wolverhampton is doing – they are a positive project team and this is quite a pioneering approach.

“There is the possibility this could be rolled out among other CCGs. They have the same requirements and this is definitely not a one-off as far as we are concerned.”

Fibonacci’s skills lay in developing easy-to-use software that staff working in the NHS, social care and other associated bodies can use to gather data on patients – whether for assessment or even in court hearings.

“This latest product is based on tried and tested systems we have developed and has been used by different authorities in England, but it seriously takes the ability to data-share to the next level,” adds Keith. “Because of the Government’s push for integrated health and social care, data-sharing is becoming quite a pressing thing – they are all wanting this.”

Fibonacci, it seems, has not just developed an ace piece of data-sharing software but done so with the end user very much in mind.

Keith explains: “We can help our customers to implement this solution and that is increasingly going to be in demand with a project of this type.

“That means more of our time which means more people so we will be expanding in terms of numbers and office size here. It is going to be quite a turning point for us.”

Software developer Fibonacci believes it could be on the verge of a minor milestone in its history, after creating what is a potentially breakthrough online data-sharing system for NHS trusts and social care authorities across England.

SILVERSTONE HPT&M CLUSTER REPORT RECEIVES PWC BACKING

MEPC, the asset manager and developer of Silverstone Park, has tasked SQW, a leading independent provider of research, analysis and advice in economic and social development to undertake the study which will culminate in a report on the HPT&M ‘cluster’ that surrounds Silverstone.

The report’s findings, expected to be published in March 2016, could help attract significant investment plus Government support for HPT&M companies located within Silverstone’s neighbouring counties.

HPT&M is defined as anything from software design to advanced engineering and everything in between including electronics, CAD, manufacturing, R&D and the professional service companies that support these activities in sectors such as aerospace, medical devices, defence, marine and motorsport.

Roz Bird, Silverstone Park’s Commercial Director, said: “We are very pleased to welcome PwC as a sponsor and steering group member on the HPT&M cluster research project. This comes at a crucial moment in the project when SQW is focusing in on key case studies and

considering key questions about the nature and future of the cluster.

“PwC’s insight, background knowledge and contacts will be highly valuable. We look forward to working with PwC in the coming months prior to the report’s publication in March 2016.”

Ruby Parmar, partner and head of private business at PwC in Milton Keynes and the South Midlands said: “We’re very pleased to be supporting this project, which

we believe will reveal important insight into the high-performance technology and motorsport cluster in the South Midlands region.

“It is an economic geography of great significance to the future of the UK economy and one which should be recognised, mapped, quantified, supported and ultimately harnessed to ensure that the activity continues to flourish.”

PwC joins the following as a sponsor partner of the study: Barclays; the Motorsports Industry Association (MIA); Buckinghamshire County Council; Northamptonshire County Council; Aylesbury Vale District Council; South Northants Council; Cherwell District Council; Buckinghamshire & Thames Valley Local Enterprise Partnership (BTVLEP); Northamptonshire Enterprise Partnership (NEP); South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership (SEMLEP).

Professional services firm PwC has added its support to an important study – a ‘Cluster Report’ – into the concentration of high-performance technology and motorsport (HPT&M) businesses located around the world famous Silverstone motor racing circuit.

MAJOR INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS FOR RACING STEPS FOUNDATION

Rowland, driving for Northamptonshire team Fortec Motorsports, wrapped up the 3.5 title at France’s world-famous Le Mans circuit where he took his seventh race win of the season.

Other past champions in the category include Robert Kubica, Kevin Magnussen and Carlos Sainz Jnr who have all gone on to race in Formula 1. Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastien Vettel are two more names to have gone from FR 3.5 to F1 stardom.

Rowland’s success is the result of five years’ management under the WM/RSF banner which supports the career paths of talented youngsters on both four and two wheels.

“It means an enormous amount,” says Worldsport Management’s Derek Walters. “Oliver had been highly recommended to us by Martin Hines of Grand Prix Racewear at the time and he had been part of the McLaren young driver environment in karting and duly won a selection process which brought him to us.

“He had a year in UK Formula Renault 2.0 and was championship runner-up, another two years in the same category in Europe and now in his second year of WSR 3.5 he’s become champion. Apart from becoming the first British driver to win this championship he is also very probably the most successful driver in its history in terms of wins in a single season.”

“There has been a tremendous amount of ‘Silverstone influence’ along the way – Oliver has enjoyed mentoring from BRDC President Derek Warwick and we also put our drivers through the Porsche Human Performance programme at its Experience Centre also here at Silverstone. All legal advice and associated RSF agreements are undertaken by Robert Cain of Cain Law, also based at the Innovation Centre.”

Worldsport Management which oversees the Racing Steps Foundation programme – run from offices in Silverstone Park’s Innovation Centre – is celebrating its biggest victory yet after one of its racing drivers, Oliver Rowland, was crowned the international Formula Renault 3.5 Champion.

ENTRIES OPEN TO WIN PRESTIGIOUS NEW HPT&M AWARD

KISTERS DEAL IS “REAL GAME CHANGER” FOR DESIGN RULE

Design Rule has further enhanced its position as one of Europe’s premier providers of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solutions for aerospace and automotive businesses after being appointed the sole UK Distributor for the industry-leading KISTERS 3DViewStation products.

KISTERS deal is “real game changer” for Design Rule

The company moved into Silverstone Park’s Innovation Centre in April 2015 to enhance its employee and customer experience. The Innovation Centre has benefited from a major make-over thanks to the estate’s asset manager and developer MEPC and is now truly a hive of activity for ‘best practice’ companies working in high-performance technology and motorsport.

Design Rule said at the time its move had been “immediately worth it” and this has been proved again with the German based KISTERS AG awarding it the UK distributor contract.

“Design Rule are very pleased to be the UK Distributor for the KISTERS 3DViewStation products, and to introduce it to the UK marketplace,” comments Design Rule’s Managing Director Bob Hillier.

“We see this addition to our product portfolio as a real game changer for many of our customers.”

Bob further explains: “3DViewStation adds significant improvement to the user experience of designers when working with complex design data, such as CATIA, NX, Creo and SolidWorks.

Proof of KISTERS’ expert competence in 2D and 3D CAD viewers is borne out by more than 3000 customers and over 150,000 installations worldwide. For more than two decades it has also become recognised as a leader in offering expert advice and support in concept development based on requirements, as well as assisting implementations, and providing training and technical support for over 20 years.

Design Rule’s new contract with KISTERS adds to its expertise of some of the most sophisticated design software provided by Dassault Systèmes, Europe’s second largest software vendor.

The high-profile Buckinghamshire Business Awards will have a prestigious new trophy up for grabs in 2016 – the High-Performance Technology and Motorsport (HPT&M) Business of the Year Award – sponsored by Silverstone Park.

The winner will be announced at the Buckinghamshire Business Awards ceremony in June. Entries are now open with a closing date of 31 January.

Silverstone Park Commercial Director Roz Bird comments: “We are delighted to put our name to this award as its name illustrates 100 per cent what we are about at Silverstone Park – high-performance technology and motorsport.

“However just because we have Silverstone in our name does not mean to say this award is a motorsport award. Far from it in fact and, with the diverse skills pool focused on the HPT&M sector that exists in Buckinghamshire among companies

serving so many different industries, we are really excited about who this award might attract. Likewise whose business brilliance we can help to highlight as part of the awards process.

“We are therefore absolutely throwing the HPT&M Award open to companies from across Buckinghamshire, involved in anything from software design to advanced engineering and everything in between including electronics, CAD, manufacturing, R&D and the professional service companies that support these activities in sectors such as aerospace, medical devices, defence, marine and motorsport.”

Buckinghamshire companies can enter the 2016 MEPC Silverstone Park HPT&M Award by registering their interest and downloading an application form via the www.bbf.uk.com website.

AMI-CON TO STAND OUT IN COMPLEX WORLD OF CARBON FIBRE

Silverstone Park enabling AMI-CON to stand out in complex world of carbon fibre

Indeed the timing has been just right for Paul Palmer’s company to expand from Kent to the influential location of Silverstone, namely a new 11,000 sq ft property that forms part of Silverstone Park’s Buckingham Road complex of high-end industrial units.

AMI-CON is one of a number of companies with advanced engineering and machining capabilities to take advantage of a place at Buckingham Road. In fact since acquiring the units to add to Silverstone Park’s stock, developer MEPC has rapidly filled them with cutting-edge high-performance technology and motorsport businesses.

It is to here that AMI-CON orders in pre-impregnated carbon fibre from CIT, a subsidiary of one of the world’s best-known manufacturers of the material, TORAY in Italy. Using one of industry’s most sophisticated machines available,

an Assyst Bullmer, it then cuts this to the incredibly intricate detail demanded by its customers. Using a specially-installed freezer, each item – heatseal-packed – is preserved to the optimum temperature of -18 degrees Celsius prior to dispatch.

Paul comments: “Location, being here at Silverstone Park, is critical. It’s not by coincidence we have come here. We did some very thorough research and increasingly we could see that most of our customers, all involved in advanced engineering, are within 20 minutes.

“We can dispatch to them and react quickly to their needs should they ever have a problem with assembly at their end – new materials can be turned around and dispatched in next to no time.”

AMI-CON’s relationship with Assyst Bullmer is vital. AB inspects the company’s machine – a Topcut Bullmer

– for calibration at regular intervals to ensure precision. The detail – measured in microns – is mind-boggling.

In charge of programming and cutting is Production Manager Adam Broomfield who joined AMI-CON from Mercedes’s all-conquering F1 World Championship-conquering team. It doesn’t get more complex than F1 so Adam therefore ‘knows his stuff’.

AMI-CON’s work, which has ranged from 10mm in diameter to two and a half metres in length, can often be found in F1 but is far more diverse than that. In automotive think visual parts such as rear wings, front splitters, pylons, strakes, door seals and wing covers; in medical MRI scanning beds – even parts of scanners – as well as enclosures and body board panels; in defence seats inside certain platforms found at ground or sea level.

“We are a value added materials supplier,” adds Paul. “We help with the choice of materials and co-develop certain systems to suit a customer’s needs. We prepare the carbon fibre so they can then layer it up at base – that is their skill.

“In effect we are almost delivering direct to bench. We want to get there 100 per cent and let the customer concentrate on building up the part itself.”

With an ex-Mercedes Formula One team technician overseeing precision, an exclusive UK importer deal with the world’s leading manufacturer of pre-impregnated carbon fibre and its product in demand from the automotive, medical, sports, defence and aerospace sectors, a Silverstone Park postcode is the icing on the cake for AMI-CON.

COFFEE AND CAKE MORNING RAISES £1,000 FOR MACMILLAN

Silverstone Park’s event was one of thousands of coffee mornings being held across the country in aid of the charity.

After a ‘bake-off’ contest in the estate’s Innovation Centre, cakes were then distributed via the Silverstone University Technology College and the Silverstone circuit’s competition paddock café for race teams to sample.

In total some £1,100 was collected through sales of cakes and other contributions.

Meanwhile Silverstone Park, courtesy of developer MEPC, recently sponsored the 18th hole at a charity golf tournament held at Silverstone Golf Club. The event raised some £5,300 in aid of the Medical Detection Dogs cause based in Milton Keynes.

COFFEE AND CAKE MORNING RAISES £1,000 FOR MACMILLAN

Silverstone Park Commercial Director Roz Bird says:

We thank every company, member of staff and pupils from the Silverstone UTC who took part in our coffee morning for their generosity in donating cakes and money towards the brilliant work that the Macmillan movement does for so many people.

We were also very pleased to help Silverstone Golf Club’s event in aid of Medical Detection Dogs – based locally, this is another terrific charity that can assist and support people during very difficult times.

Companies and staff at Silverstone Park helped raise more than £1,000 when the business estate held a coffee morning networking event in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

ACCELERATED SUCCESS IN COLOURED CARBON FIBRE

GPF One, a pioneer of producing coloured carbon fibre, is truly a name for the future in the automotive, aerospace and sports sectors and it believes much of its potential for international success is thanks to its links to Silverstone Park.

ACCELERATED SUCCESS IN COLOURED CARBON FIBRE

The SME has spent its formative years developing coloured carbon fibre and bringing its revolutionary product – known as Hypetex – to market. In the past 12 months things have really started to accelerate for the company, which is run by individuals with experience of working with carbon fibre in Formula 1.

Thus came the decision to take a tenancy in Silverstone Park’s iconic Innovation Centre, which has undergone a major facelift inside and out courtesy of property developer MEPC, which took over management of the estate two years ago.

GPF One’s Director Edward Ashley-Carter explains: “The Innovation Centre really has been the start of our journey. It’s a great destination for us and one of only very few addresses people can find and identify with immediately when you say ‘Silverstone’. Location-wise it also provides great access to all the major transport routes for us and, more importantly, our visitors.

“The facilities that MEPC have provided have been absolutely first-class and the whole team there has been nothing but supportive. The Innovation Centre is the ideal place for us to accommodate internal project meetings – whether it’s just two of us or a larger group. Likewise, it’s provided an excellent backdrop for us to meet our potential international new business clients.”

Despite GPF One links with F1, its products – which could one day be manufactured at Silverstone Park – are not necessarily just with motorsport in mind...

Edward continues: “While black is beautiful in the world of carbon fibre, we really felt we could develop coloured carbon fibre which would work so well in other areas and that has been our challenge. This could be in automotive interiors where a material needs to match so many other materials. Also the aviation market and sports market, where weight is everything in many areas…

Our DNA comes from F1. We wanted to be something very British – a British brand. So when finding a location there could really only be one and that was Silverstone.

HARNESSING THE POWER IN WORLD LAND SPEED RECORD BID

Willans has produced the safety harnessing that will keep ‘pilot’ Andy Green strapped into to his seat when he attempts to take Bloodhound to speeds approaching 1000mph next year.

The harnessing’s design is based around those that Willans already uses, to supply thousands of competitors across a wide variety of motorsport categories the world over – including the Williams team in Formula 1.

“This is a high quality polyester weave to Willans’ very rigorous specification,” comments Willans Director Simon Perkins. “We also use our own dedicated stitch patterns – based on a five-pointed ‘W’ pattern that we pioneered – to spread the load across the biggest area of webbing possible.

“The adjusters are of very high grade aluminium that we have forged to our rigorous specifications and which we then machine ourselves back here at Silverstone Park.

“Obviously we’ve needed to work closely with the Bloodhound engineers and were involved in a trial fit with the driver Andy Green. From there it was a case of tailoring the harness so it fits him precisely.”

Willans was among the first companies to commit product to the Bloodhound project. And adds Simon: “Bloodhound is a terrific project to be associated with and of course makes us very proud. Having seen the latest photos it has clearly been quite a feat for the Bloodhound team to pull it all together and it’s great that it is British.”

Significantly Bloodhound’s unveiling in London came at the same time as Hollywood blockbuster movie The Martian’s launch in the UK – Willans has also supplied the harnessing for actor Matt Damon’s spacecraft in the film!

Harnessing the power in world land speed record bidBritain’s supersonic Bloodhound land speed world record challenger – featuring components designed and built by Silverstone Park-based company Willans – has recently been on show in London.

COLLEGE’S SUDDEN SURGE IN FEMALE MECHANICS

The National College for Motorsport has reported a sudden rise in the number of young women to take up motorsport mechanic courses in its Silverstone Park workshop.

In 12 years the college has never had more than two female students in one academic year. For 2015/16 it suddenly has eight out of 71 newcomers in total.

“It is fantastic to see and within just a couple of weeks of starting it’s plain to see they are developing a camaraderie and holding their own with their males peers,” said the college’s Chris Philpott.

“This is a significant moment for the college to have so many young women join us in one go and also something still rare within motorsport. Gradually women are breaking through in motorsport and becoming role models and hopefully that is something that each of our female students can go on to be as well.

Chatting to Frankie Gill and Naomi Tweddle (both 18), Grace Dyer (17) plus Gabby Maia, Hannah Long, Coralie Pearce and Chloe Birkett (all 16) it’s clear that recent efforts by the college to raise its profile helped draw them to it. Also that they all instantly feel they have found their calling in life…

As Grace explains: “There’s something very special about being a mechanic on a racing car – you can be up at five in the morning and not finish until 11 at night, making sure it is right. It’s your pride and joy and I love every minute.”

An increase in female students is another feather in the National College for Motorsport’s cap. Recently it also confirmed a boom in the number of students who had successfully been able to secure apprenticeships with motor racing teams across the UK.

‘BUZZ’ TOO GOOD TO MISS FOR NICHE VEHICLE NETWORK

SILVERSTONE PARK ‘BUZZ’ TOO GOOD TO MISS FOR NICHE VEHICLE NETWORKThe Niche Vehicle Network (NVN) has already agreed to return to Silverstone Park in 2016 for one of its annual Members’ Forums after its first event at the high-performance technology and motorsport (HPT&M) business estate was voted a resounding success by its members.

Over 100 NVN members attended the Forum, held inside the University Technology College (UTC) that sits on the estate and which was organised by Silverstone Park’s asset manager and developer MEPC. A show of hands at the end was hugely in favour of a return in 2016.

“The beauty of being here is it feels like there’s a real buzz to the place,” enthuses NVN Programme Director Dr Viv Stephens. “It’s been beautifully organised and the lecture theatre inside the UTC that we have used requires no microphones. It’s all just very nicely set up and you could see by the unanimous show of hands we had that everybody thinks this is a great place to be.

Being at Silverstone is a good draw and we have probably seen our best ever turn-out in terms of people who booked a place and attended.

During the event some 30 NVN members were each given five minutes on the floor to promote their specialisms to the audience and develop potential collaborations with other companies in the room.

As Viv explains: “The network exists to bring together companies in the niche vehicle sector and give them a common focus on innovation, competitiveness and the drive for success. It is all about collaboration through innovation.”

Silverstone Park’s Commercial Director Roz Bird says: “Silverstone Park was delighted to play host to the NVN Forum. The event was all about encouraging businesses to consider collaborating with each other and that’s exactly the sort of networking activity that we want to encourage at Silverstone Park. We are also really pleased that NVN had such a good time that they want to come back! We would love to host further industry leading events in the future.”
