Minutes of the August 15th, 2005 Monthly Membership Meeting

• The August 15, 2005 meeting of the Jungle Terrace Civic Association was held at the Walter Fuller Center, 7891 26th Avenue North with 38 people in attendance. Our President Tom Killian called the meeting to order promptly at 7:00 PM and the pledge of allegiance was given.

• The featured program on Hurricane Preparedness was intro-

duced next. Ryan Illingworth advised the members that Raymond James investments agency has teamed up with Home Depot and Richard Ficca. Mr. Ficca, owner of American Friendly Agency. His office manager, Sandra Rich, distributed a handout entitled “Ten Things All Home-owners Should Know About Their Coverage!”. He then expounded on each item and stressing that flood coverage requires a separate policy and hurricane deductibles are dif-ferent than normal household occurrences. He also advised that you should know what type of policy you have and that “HO” policies are like a fully loaded automobile while a “DP” policy, while covering the basics does not come with leather seats or other desirable options. Make sure you have an “open” policy. Wind coverage is different than hurri-cane. Highly recommended was replacement cost (RCV) instead of ACV coverage. He stated it is very important to make a photo inventory of household contents, being sure to note all pertinent information (make, model, serial #, when/where purchased, $ paid, etc.) on the reverse. Following a question and answer period Mr. Ficca was thanked for his very informative presentation.

• Mr. Bryan Baker, Raymond James agency, made sugges-

tions on how to organize your important papers (including bills due) so they would be ready to pick up and go in case of evacuation for a hurricane, or to store in a sealed pail. A sample 3-ring binder was available for review showing how and what to include. He also discussed what should be kept in a safe deposit box, noting NOT to keep the original of your will in your safe deposit box because when you pass it will not be opened for some time. Mr. Neal Kaplan and

Mr. Lloyd Law from Home Depot reviewed precautions such as different ways to protect windows, showed the door prizes that were to be raffled off and invited the audience to come up to see the items on display and ask questions. All were thanked for making such an informative program.

• The minutes from our July meeting were then accepted by

motion duly made and seconded. The treasurer’s report was read by Tom Killian, accepted and filed for audit. Since our CPO, Rich Hladik, was on assignment, Officer Bonnie Bradford addressed the attendants giving statistics for bur-glaries and thefts since the last report. She advised not to hesitate to call the police if you see something suspicious. Use the non-emergency phone number for such reports. Voicemail numbers were given for contacting local officers for other matters as follows: 892-5949 Hladik; 892-5951 JJ Douglas; 892-5948 Bonnie. Do not expect an immediate response from voicemail messages. She noted that currently most auto thefts are of Dodge’s. This was followed by a very informative question and answer period regarding pri-oritizing calls and number of officers on the street.

• The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m.

This Months Gardening Tips by Dean Miner, President Floridian Pest & Turf

(see ad at right) Azaleas

DO NOT PRUNE THIS MONTH! Check all plants for lace bug. The symptoms of infestation are a grayish colored leaf on the upper surface. The underside will have ruby colored dots, which is the excrement of the insect. With a hand lens, you can see the insect. Use malathion or diazinon for control.

Camellias Good time to set new plants while the rains are plentiful. Make a few cuttings to increase varieties. Use a Camellia special fertilizer. Spray plants with cygon for control of tea scale.

Cannas Worm damage should begin to wane. If plants have finished flower-ing, remove the stem where the flowers were originally. New stems will grow and there will be more throughout the fall months. Use thuricide for control of canna leaf roller. Always use a spreader sticker for better control.

Daylilies Now is the time to dig and divide. Leave two or three plants in a division. Buy some new colors. Apply some slow release fertilizer in the planting hole.

Hedges Excellent time to set new screening hedges. Some you may want to try are: Podocarpus, Viburnum, ligustrum, and Leyland-Cypress. Use a slow release fertilizer in the planting hole.

Impatiens These may be very tall and they should be cut back now. If the stems have no leaves on them, there could be an infestation of red spiders. Use one of the Safers products. Root some of the pieces that have been cut off.

Lawns (Fertilization) Most people have problems with determining how much fertilizer to apply to their lawn. Here is a simple method. Let us assume you have five thousand square feet of grass. You are going to use a 10-10-10. The first number is nitrogen. It is what makes the grass grow and it is what you use to calculate how much should be applied. Use the first number (nitrogen) and divide it into a hundred. This gives you 10. Now you have five thousand feet of grass. Multiply ten by five (there is five thousand square feet of grass) and it gives you fifty. That is the amount of fertilizer you will need to apply to your lane. If you used a 16-4-8 you would divide the 16 into a hundred. In this case the amount to use per 1,000 square feet would be six or seven pounds.

Lawns (St. Augustine) Excellent time to repair weak areas with plugs. Use a lawn fertilizer this month. Check lawn for chinch bugs and sod wed worms. Use Dursban or Diazinon.

Mulches After the summer rains, mulch will need renewing around most plants. It should be applied to a depth of two and a half to three inches. Good cypress bark mulch adds to the beauty of the plants.

Poinsettias This is the last time to pinch back the plant if flowers are to be out

for the holiday season. Clip back no later than September 15th. Apply magnesium sulfate for a darker green color of the plant, and fertilize with 10-10-10. Use thuricide on a weekly basis for control of poinsettia horn worm.

Pscide This tiny insect is still around. It spins a white web on the trunk and limbs of trees giving the tree a ghostly appearance. It does no harm. After the rains cease, the web will disappear.

Roses It may be necessary to do some judicious pruning on plants that have become overgrown during the summer months. Keep spraying on a weekly basis and fertilize on a monthly schedule. Use a rose special fertilizer with a systemic insecticide. Black spot and mildew will be prevalent throughout the month.

Tomatoes Make the first planting this month. Use tomato cages to keep the foliage off the ground. Use Fertilome Root Stimulator when setting plants. Begin spraying for insects. Use collars around the young

(Continued from page 11) plants to deter cut worms.

Yellow Shrubs Many of the ornamental plants in the landscape may have yellow color instead of the dark green. This could be a lack of iron or man-ganese, or magnesium. Apply all three to those plants

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q. The leaves on my figs have turned brown around the edges. In fact, some of them are totally brown. Am I doing something wrong?

A. You are doing nothing wrong. Your problem is a fungus called “fig rust”. Unfortunately, EPA has not approved a fungicide for the control of the disease. In the past, neutral copper was used as a con-trol, but even this is not labeled at the present time. The best sugges-tion is to pick off diseased leaves and remove any infected leaves on the ground.

Q. There are large areas in our St. Augustine grass that appear to have been cut. Close examination shows a trashy appearance. We can see no indication of any insect. What could be the problem?

A.. I suspect you have an infestation of sod web worms. The first indi-

There is activity all around Tyrone Square and in addition to the exciting Lifestyle Redevelopment Project, there are many other enhancement projects being implemented for

2005. Although there are many "behind-the-scenes" projects, here are a few of the noteworthy improvements that are already completed or in progress that impact merchants more directly

and/or enhance the shopping experience of our guests:

cation of this problem is a tiny gray moth fluttering over the surface of the grass late in the evening. This moth lays eggs in the grass which hatch into a small worm (actually larvae). As it feeds on the blades of grass, the area becomes trashy looking. The worm can be found down in the grass during the day. The worm is about a half inch long. It rests in a C shape down in the grass during the day, on top of dead grass and soil. It may be green or gray. This worm feeds only at night. You may want to take a flashlight out after dark and inspect the spot. Many times you can find the worm feeding on the on the blades of grass. Dursban is a good control for this pest. READ THE LABEL BEFORE APPLYING THE PESTICIDE.

Q. Begonias are one of our favorite flowers and we have a large bed of them. However, we notice some of the plants seem to topple over. Looking at the plant closely, it appears to have rotted at soil level. Is this a fungus?

A. It is a fungus. The hot, wet weather favors a disease that lives in the soil and it does attack the begonia just where you found the prob-lem “at the soil”.

Q. I have a citrus tree in my yard and it appears all of the fruit is split-ting. I don’t know the variety. If it doesn’t stop, I will have no fruit later on. Is there a control?

A.. According to The Cooperative Extension Service, it is a physio-logical problem. It may be advisable to apply a spray of trace ele-ments to the tree next spring. Keep the tree well fertilized and wa-tered. My observations are that all of the fruit will not split. The con-dition is very common on certain varieties of citrus.

Q. When is the last time to prune azaleas? We have just returned from

the north and our bushes are very much overgrown. A. You are too late to prune them this year. Ideally, the last time to prune azaleas is June 15th, if you want a lot of flowers next year. It is possible to remove, at this time, some of the very tall shoots but the chance of the producing flowers from new growth is NIL.

Q. Our amaryllis did not bloom well this year. Is there anything we can do at this time to make more flowers for next spring? They are very thick. Can they be transplanted now?

A. In answer to your first question, I suspect the bulbs are too deep or in a shady area. Amaryllis has a tendency to pull themselves into the ground after a few years. This will prevent flowering. H e a v y shade will also prevent development of flowers. The second part of your question is easy. Transplant now! You can remove all of the leaves by cutting them off. The bulbs do not need to dry but can be set immediately. When removing the leaves, leave about four inches on the bulb. It makes them easier to handle. Set the bulb with one third in the soil and two thirds about the soil. It is not necessary to remove the roots.

Q. Our neighbors have a lot of bananas and they have offered us a start. When is the best time to dig and transplant one?

A. Ideally, when the plant is dormant, which would be during the cool months of winter. However, if the rains continue, now would also be satisfactory. I would suggest you use some organic fertilizer in the planting hole. Dried cow manure is great. It will help the plant to develop roots during the cool months and by spring the top will be ready to grow. Don’t forget to water if there are no rain showers. ***

" Who is Your Family Doctor?" When you were a child did you have a family doctor who you went to for everything from a runny nose to a broken arm? He or she was probably a trusting soul who made you feel like everything was going to be all right regardless of how bad you felt. You probably had total faith in this person to go to them for preventive check-ups as well.

What has happened to these family physicians today? They are very hard to find. Unfortunately, they appear to have been squeezed out of practice (and our lives) by bureaucratic business decisions of managed care companies committed to making profits for insurance companies.

Ask yourself how many times your primary care physician has changed in the past five years. Who will your family be able to turn to for true health care and health information in the future? Who is going to fill this vital role for our families in the 21st century?

Chiropractors have quickly become the first choice for millions of families who are tired of being told by HMO's, PPO's and all the other O's which doctors they can see, how often they can visit them and which procedures they can receive. Many families know that Doctors of Chiropractic have been providing excellent drug-free family health care for well over 100 years. Millions of families have turned to chiropractic as the foundation for their family's health and well-being. They are seeing the results of chiropractic's philosophical and scientific promise to keep them expressing their full potential without the use of drugs or surgery. Millions of educated people know that chiropractic provides:

• Fast Relief and Long-Term Health: chiropractic adjustments are gentle, safe and effective. Studies report that people under chiro-practic care heal more quickly from injuries and pain than those who are not under chiropractic care.

• Non-Invasive Holistic Approach: chiropractic works with the understanding that the body has the natural ability to heal itself. Drugs and surgery can have serious side effects. People are choos-ing the holistic chiropractic approach for their families first and making the more invasive procedures a last resort. • Pro active Health Care Choice: chiropractic is an excellent pro active health care choice. By properly maintaining the spine and nervous system and keeping it in optimal condition, chiropractic helps people live an active life for an active future with the possibil-ity of expressing their full potential.

If you're ready for a holistic, effective pro-active health care solution that will provide quality health care and education for your family, then chiropractic is the natural choice for you. ***

September Home of the

Month by Mary Scott

Neighborhood Pride doesn't go any deeper this month when

talking with Jacqui Wolfendale. She

recounts the changes she and her husband, Kris, have

recently completed on their home of 8 years. They have

truly brightened the face of the neighborhood that they love so much. They have worked hard on the homes exterior located at

3524 70th Way North. Landscaping, new stucco and painting have really made a

difference. Great job! Congratulations to the entire

Wolfendale Family.

If you have, or know of a property that you would like to have

nominated as Home of the Month, please call 384-1718.
