Through this support, our students gained a deeper insight into many of life’s factors that make a person successful. Congratulations to our own athletes—our Intermediate basketball teams who had a great season.

This month we say farewell to Miss Dunsford as our DECE as she has chosen to return to teaching. Hopefully we’ll see her here on occasion. PINK SHIRT DAY IS EVERYDAY

On Wednesday, March 26th, over half the school wore PINK to celebrate their com-mitment to stop BULLYING and made a PROMISE to NOT BULLY or be MEAN to others. Several students listened to the

story “Pinkalicious” and

“Chrysanthamum”. Both stories about teasing and what happens when that oc-curs. Our older students studies the ef-fects of bullying on self-esteem, life oppor-tunities and becoming successful. Thank you to all of those who chose to partici-pate and make a

stand against

Meanness.

Lego Robotics Meet

Mr. Slavin would like to congratulate all the members of Central's Lego Robotics teams for the great work they ac-

complished at the Robo-lympics meet in St Catharines on February 21. All teams made a great effort and it paid off,

scoring high marks in various challenges throughout the day. A special congratulations goes to Central's intermediate

team of Gary K, Connery V, Julian T, and Ethan C for bringing home the bronze medal thanks to some precise pro-

gramming and solid teamwork.

Also, despite an initial mistake in calculating scores, the junior team of Abbey S, Jade G, McKenna C, and Madeline S

were awarded gold for their accomplishments.

Mr. Slavin's "gold medal play of the day" goes to Central's junior team of Dillon J, Luke C, Andrew B, and Colm S for their selfless support of another Central team. The boys had a winning program for their robot to win the speed skat-ing challenge but realized in the afternoon that their lower score on sports challenges would prevent them from being in contention for a medal. Knowing that another Central junior team had an excellent score for their sports, the boys shared their speed skating program which could then be tweaked by the other team to have a better chance against other schools. The school spirit and sportsmanship shown by the junior boys was exemplary for C-Hawks and they have received C-Hawk awards for their actions. Thanks to all teams for a great day, and thanks to everyone who came out for Lego Robotics this season!

Caribou Math

Some of the students from Monsieur Slavin's Grade 5 class have volunteered to take part in Brock University's Cari-bou online Math Challenge. This challenge is open to students from around the world and tests mathematical skills of students from Grades 3 to 12. Monsieur's students gave a great effort and included some great results! In January, Luke C managed to rank 3rd among DSBN participants and 165th in the world; Andrew B ranked 5th in the DSBN and 335th in the world, and Abbey S ranked 7th in the DSBN and 529th in the world.

The challenges appear about once per month where students are given an hour for completion. Questions are differ-entiated and include games and mathematical trivia.

Parent Council Corner

Rocks & Rings Curling

Central School Council sponsored the Capital One Rocks & Rings curling program for the entire school during the first week of February. The Rocks & Rings program is designed to introduce the Olympic sport of curling to elementary school children. Each class spent one class period in the school’s gym learning and trying out the sport of curling. It was a perfect way for the students to get excited about the Olym-pics and our Canadian athletes! Students pictured in the photo are from Mrs. Lobb’s JK/SK class.

Family Fun and Fitness in February

Central School Council hosted three Wednesdays in February a free Family Fun and Fitness exercise sessions for the school’s families (the first session was un-fortunately cancelled due to weather). The 45-minute sessions were led by ex-perienced certified fitness instructor Mehrnoosh Afnan. It was a great opportunity for everyone to learn how keeping fit and active can be fun.

March 26th

Raising Resilient Children Speaker

On Wednesday, March 26th at 7:00pm Central School Council is hosting a free evening presentation for the school’s parents lead by Dick O’Brien entitled ―Raising Resilient Children – How can we prepare our chil-dren for the inevitable challenges and struggles they will face?‖. The presentation will explore realistic ways parents can encourage, inspire and instill resiliency in their children. As well as it will discuss key tools that anchor children with a confident foundation and resilient mindset. The evening is made possible by a ―Parents Reaching Out Grant‖ from Ontario’s Ministry of Education. Childcare will be available; pre-registration required. See attached flyer for more information and pre-registration.

Next School Council Meeting

The next Central School Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 18th at 6:30pm in the school’s li-brary. All are welcome to attend. Hope to see you there!

"The DSBN school year calendars designate March 7, 2014 as a Professional Activity Day and traditionally, teaching staff participate fully in professional learning activities on days such as March 7, 2014. However, based upon the agreed to Memorandums of Under-standing, permanent contract teachers in both elementary and secondary schools will be taking March 7, 2014 as a mandatory unpaid day and will not be at work. All other staff will be at work as regularly scheduled participating in site based work responsibilities. "

Eco Corner

This Wednesday, March 5th, the Eco Team will be starting a new program: the Boomerang

Lunch. Every Wednesday, we'll be asking students to bring home any food waste they have so it may be recycled at home. Since approximately 18% of food scraps are ending up in the garbage, our goal is to reduce this amount. This is totally voluntary, but we encourage students and teachers to partici-pate.

MARCH BREAK ACTIVITIES

Community event information is posted to the District School Board of Niagara’s website on a regular

basis. Please take the time to have a look; they have lots of information on March Break activities in and

around the St. Catharines area for the whole family.
