From the PTA

A huge thank you to all those who organised, helped and came to our inaugural Paekakariki School Fair and Plant Sale! It was a wonderful day with an amazing atmosphere. The Garden Group plant sale raised $4000 for the School Garden and the PTA raised over $13,000! We have a goal to raise over $20,000 next year and need all of our school whanau to get stuck in and help to achieve this. There is a School Fair Hui/Celebration/Prize giving tonight (Thursday) - 6:30pm at the Bowling Club which is your chance to share feedback, brainstorm for next year and find out who can throw a gumboot! Everyone welcome!

Curriculum

Mātāriki Mātāriki is the Māori name for the star cluster known as the Pleiades. Traditionally for Māori when it appeared just before dawn in late May or early June, it signalled the start of the Māori New Year. As we head into winter Mātāriki is a time when the harvest has been completed and the gardens and people rest. Time is spent together playing games. During the term students will be learning about this celebration, the constellation and myths and legends that surround our Māori heritage.

At Paekākāriki School we will hold our annual Mātāriki celebration on Friday June 30th with a potluck tea, a bonfire and students sharing their learning about Mātāriki.

All whanau and community members are invited to join us.

Teacher Only Day On Friday July 28th (Term 3) staff will be attending a noho marae at Kāpiti College. We will be welcomed onto the Kāpiti College marae on the Friday morning and will spend the Friday night there. Rakau We are very fortunate to have Ahorangi Rākau Wānaga visit us this term. All students will have the opportunity to learn Maurākau roa. This is a great activity for co-ordination and assisting in learning te reo. Waka Ama Last week I had the privilege of attending the Waka Ama graduation at Takapuwahia Marae in Poririua. During the course of this programme students learn the skills necessary for paddling a waka, team work and how to look after themselves. Congratulations to our wonderful Tuakana students who successfully completed the programme and proudly shared their pepeha at the graduation.

Nau mai, Haere mai, Invitation to our Thursday Wānanga

From the Board of Trustees

Nau mai, Haere mai.

What an awesome school fair and plant sale! We congratulate the PTA and fair coordinator, Alexandra Saunders, and the Garden Group for organising a stellar event. The fair raised over $14,000 and the plant sale over $4,000. And just as important, it was a great social occasion. Thank you to all who helped make this event such a success.

We have heard from members of our school whnau, the PTA and the Ministry of Education over the last couple of meetings. Remember you are welcome to attend and/or speak at our Board meetings. They are meetings held in public. If you wish to speak at a meeting, please talk to the chair in advance.

The Board has had some big strategic discussions lately, including considering Mori representation on the Board, how our national standards data stacks up compared to other schools and how we can work together with the PTA. We signed off our strategic plan for the next three years, which gives effect to our Charter principles and educational and other priorities.

We passed a number of new policies: Dyslexia, Documentation and Self Review, and Curriculum. We are continuing our consideration of proposed Behaviour management policies and procedures.

The Board heard about the new Naked Lunches (lunches without rubbish) proposal from Ng Kkano and agree this is a great initiative.

The Board considered a report from Julia against the Annual Plan. We noted that many of our Strategic Plan initiatives are already well underway. We acknowledge the huge effort put in by staff to give our tamariki an event-filled term 1 and to transition into our new school structure. Thanks to Julia and our staff and all whnau who have helped to support the teachers and students.

The next scheduled Board meeting is on 28 June. You can see our minutes in the folder in the foyer.

If you have any comments or questions, please email [email protected].

Garden Group

Thanks to the Garden Group for funding the purchase of our new drinking fountain outside the hall, it's great to have their support. The Garden Group is funding for the second year in a row, free soup and bread each Thursday lunchtime as well as gardening across the school. Tuesday's lunchtime gardening with Diane is open this term to all students keen to explore the living world from 1-1.50pm. Parents are welcome to join in this fun session.

Getting to Know Us – Donna Barr

The first ten years of my life were spent on our family farm, on a high hill a few miles out of Exeter, Devonshire, UK offering a near 360* view with the city and sea beyond on a clear day. Three adjoining, old, cob cottages were home for my parents and younger sister, paternal grandparents, Great Grandmother, Uncle, Aunt and younger cousins. The dairy farm was a huge adventure playground, a happy time spent with four generations, I particularly enjoyed listening to Great Gran's stories of life when she was young, helping Grandad with the calves or riding on the top of a trailer stacked high with fresh hay bales. My own family then moved to Dartmoor National Park, which I've considered home ever since. Living closer to my Mother's family, I had cousins my age to share wanderings over the Moors between Houndtor and Widecombe-in-the-Moor or to climb the rocks watching the mist rise with the early morning sun, revealing Haytor in the distance. Inspired by tales from my Grandfather, I knew from a young age that I would travel overseas - this included four very interesting and happy years in Sweden and Norway... ...later arriving in Paekakariki. My association with Paekakariki School began as a parent helper when the eldest of three daughters started school, twenty-five years ago As the School Librarian and a Teacher Aide, working with your children and my love of books, is the most rewarding work.

Roxy5 Film Competition 2017 – from Rachel

I would like to offer the biggest, LOUDEST congratulations to our Year 7/8 Roxy5 team. In case you haven't yet heard......we made it through to the finals!!!!

Haven't heard about the Roxy? Here's what it's all about:

The competition is open for Year 7-13 students who have demonstrated their talent/ interest in performing arts and who would benefit from the opportunity to extend their skills into the film making process.

The short films can be of any genre and style: documentary, animation, 3D, silent, stop motion, movie trailer, commercial, comedy, music video etc. Each short film must incorporate three key elements in some way - 2 physical

items and 1 line of dialogue. The duration of each film needs to be a minimum of 45 seconds and up to a maximum length of 5 minutes. The emphasis of the competition is on creative story telling potential rather than technical production. The short films can be made by groups of students in their own time or as part of a school

project.

Our amazing team of 17 students came together through a shared interest in film and produced an awesome work of art. Thanks very much to Alouis Woodhouse from Kapiti College who gave up his time and energy to host us for the day, divulging his film expertise and sharing some tricks of the trade. He also lent us a camera and allowed us access

to the editing suite up at the College. Thanks Mr Woodhouse!!

The finals are to be held next Wednesday night. A red carpet event held at the Roxy Cinema in Miramar, where the overall finalists will be announced.

Great job gang, and good luck!

Netball

Welcome to the winter season which means netball season is upon us. Saturday netball is played at Te Atiawa Courts in Paraparaumu Beach. Our season this year begins on the Saturday 6th May and runs through till the 26th

keen for team managers and helpers on a Saturday.

Year 7 and 8 Girl’s Self Defence

This term our Year 7/8 girls have been offered the opportunity to take part in a free Self Defence Course. The course is being offered and run by the Women's Self Defense Network- Wahine Toa, jointly funded by the Ministry of social

Development and ACC.

The self defence teacher is a qualified and experienced teacher of self defence to women and girls. She will help the girls learn ways of dealing with unsafe people and situations and threats to their safety, such as being followed, and issues relating to cyber safety. This includes learning how to give clear boundaries and messages to those known and

unknown to her when feeling unsafe, trusting her feelings and listening to her instincts. The course will also cover naming body parts, distinguishing between good and bad touching and strategies to deal with inappropriate

touching. These skills will be reinforced through discussion, the development of verbal and physical skills, and developing instincts to help the girls keep themselves and others (e.g. friends / siblings) safe. This course offers each

girl the opportunity to take a positive step to reinforce her ability to think confidently, speak strongly, and use her physical skills when necessary.

The course will run over 1.5 days. Wednesday May 31st and Friday June 2nd.

Thanks to Wahine Toa, the Ministry of Social Development and ACC
