October 29th, 2016 9:00 a.m. till 3:00 p.m. Cost $20.00 includes lunch

We are living in a very fast-paced world of communication and performance all across the globe. We are constantly being barraged by commercials and social media-generated techniques and therapies for quality of health, happiness and long life. People talk about stress and anger that are spiraling out of control mainly due to pain, separa-tion, cancer, uncertain future and so on. Biblical Spirituality can and does help. Participants in this Retreat will be able to explore Biblical Passages and Spiritual Techniques that will enable them to live a healthier, happier and longer life here and of course, life in heaven.

STEWARDSHIP SPOTLIGHT - THE TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Here we are in the middle of the 2016 Olympics, and the second reading to the Hebrews from today’s Mass is so appropriate: “Let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith.” In the second letter to Timothy, Paul also writes, “I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me, which the Lord, the just judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but to all who have longed for his appearance.” And in 1 Corinthians he says, “Do you not know that the runners in the stadium all run in the race, but only one wins the prize? Run so as to win. Every athlete exercises discipline in every way. They do it to win a perishable crown, but we an imperishable one. Thus I do not run aimlessly; I do not fight as if I were shadowboxing. No, I drive my body and train it, for fear that, after having preached to others, I myself should be disqualified.” What is the purpose of all of this sports metaphor in our faith? Those who have seriously competed in sports, especially those at the level of the Olympics, know the drive, hard work, and sacrifice that are made so as to win. OK, if you haven’t competed seriously in sports, then think of some other major goal that you have set in your life and how you singularly strived to attain it. Maybe it’s music or some other talent, or your career, or some hobby. The point is that the winner’s circle of our faith is eternal life with God in heaven. For such a prize, how hard do we work? Do we take it for granted, as if everyone gets a participant ribbon? Who knows the expanse of the mercy of the Father, and maybe everyone does. Rather than counting on such a finale, though, I will follow the instructions of my life’s coach, Jesus, as he reveals to us the will of the Father. He has given us an internal coach, the Holy Spirit, to guide us and strengthen us in our training. This is serious stuff! Let’s not be complacent. May we think and pray about this “race of faith” and then act like we are aiming for something real, important, and eternal. Paul Gulig, Chair of Stewardship Committee

A MESSAGE FROM ONE OF OUR STUDENTS

Dear St. Augustine Parishioners,

My name is Silvio Martinez, and I am a second-year Public Health student at UF who just returned from studying abroad in Cusco. I wanted to share how the experience impacted me and the fundraiser I have started. I volunteered at a poor healthcare center called Santa Rosa, and there I witnessed challenges that one would al-most never see in a clinic in the US. To highlight a few issues, for an entire week they had no running water, the nurses shared one Doppler between 3 rooms, and the entire 4-story building has only one computer with Wi-Fi and only 2 scales (one half-broken). One day, a nurse told me about a male technician who had a heart attack in Santa Rosa, and they were in need of an oxygen tank to sustain him for the long ride to the hospital. Because they lacked a simple oxygen mask, the man died on the way, and there was nothing they could do about it.

In many situations, having access to simple resources can make the difference between a patient’s life and death. I was inspired by Santa Rosa’s healthcare staff; despite their lack of resources and money, they perse-vere to treat the hundreds of daily patients. The staff was so kind-hearted, offering to walk into the poor commu-nity to treat disadvantaged patients who can’t make it to the clinic. Every day, they taught me essential lessons and increased my motivation to work with Doctors without Borders. Because of their love and dedication, I have started a fundraiser to help them get basic medical supplies (you can donate and see the supply list in the link below). I have raised a third of it so far, but still need a lot of help. Would you prayerfully consider giving just $5 or $10 donations? If 100 people donate, I would reach my goal of $1,000. If you cannot donate, your prayers and spreading the word would help immensely.

Visit www.gofundme.com/silvioincusco for the

full story and to donate!

God Bless, Silvio Martinez
