The Principal’s Points

It is difficult to believe that we have completed the first quarter of the school year and are moving

into the holiday season. I want to express sincere appreciation to the entire Park View community

for their tireless efforts and dedication to our school. I want each of you to know how honored and

thankful I am for the opportunity to serve this community and our students. I hope that each of you

knows what a treasure this school is and that we must continue to build on our successes while

reflecting on how we can continue to improve student performance and academic achievement.

Pride in our school, Value in our work, Honor in our daily service and activities and Success that can

be measured in many ways is what makes Park View an exceptional school community.

In mentioning successes, I would like to congratulate our Library Media Center on receiving the

National Medal for Museum and Library Service for 2012. This medal is the nation‟s highest

honor for libraries and museums and celebrates the positive difference they make for individuals,

families and communities. Our library and our exceptional librarians Candace Main Rush and

Jennifer Fisher, received the medal on November 14 at a ceremony in the Indian Treaty Room in the

Old Executive Office Building on the grounds of the White House. Representing our school

community was student body president, Pablo Rivera. In the twelve years that the medal has been

given to libraries, Park View is only the second school to receive this honor and the first high school.

Congratulations to all of you who make are library such a special place.

I want to thank all of the students, staff and community members who supported our 1st ever school

wide fundraiser.

This is a very busy time for our seniors. I want to remind students and parents of application

deadlines and that transcript request must be submitted by the dates noted in this newsletter to

ensure that they are received by the college and university on time. During winter break, our Student

Counseling Office is closed and transcripts will not be processed, so please be certain that you check

the dates in this newsletter. Seniors need to also remember to pay your senior fee of $100 to Mrs.

Koscinski by January 17, 2013. As payment for the cap and gown is included in this fee, it is critical

that you pay so we can order the caps and gowns. Finally, I want to remind our seniors that the

senior exam exemption begins second semester. You will be receiving a letter in January 2013

outlining the criteria for earning an exam exemption.

Are you looking for a holiday gift for a special student? Might I suggest a Park View High School

Yearbook? The full color yearbooks are currently on sale for $50.00 and will be delivered in May

2013. You may either order on line or bring your money to Mrs. Menna in the Publication Lab. The

price for yearbooks will increase in December, so I urge you to order now!

This will be our last newsletter until next year…..2013. Each year, it is my practice to share

with you my resolutions for the New Year. This year, my resolutions are simple. I resolve to

continue to give you my best and live our PBIS initiative words….Pride in the work that I do,

you my best and Success that is measured each and every day by all of the little things that

The Fine Arts Department has student artwork on exhibit from now until February

15th on the 3rd floor of the LCPS Admin building. The show includes 35

frames of artwork produced by Linda Burke's Art I students and Don Giles Art

I, Art II and Photography students. The works shown by Linda Burke are ink

drawings of leaves and her contributing students are: Hasan Anwar, Boris Cabrera,

Park View Libray Information

Your PVHS librarians are so happy to be honored in this way. We would like to take

this opportunity to point out the hard work of fellow colleagues that make our work

possible. First and foremost, the PVHS library would not be the same without its library

assistant, Feng-Chiao Lin. Her dedication to providing quality library services, a well-

organized library, and the creativity that she pours into our displays make Park View

special amongst school libraries. The librarians would also like to point out the

collaborative effort of Park View‟s teachers, teaching assistants, and other staff that

allow us to have so many classes come into the Park View library and make us look

good everyday with their willingness to work together to best instruct students. We also

need to thank Dr. Minshew and the entire PVHS admin team for their unwavering

support of the library. Finally, any school library‟s success depends on its largest group

of patrons – the students. Thank you to the Park View student body for your willingness

to participate in our programs and happily using our library resources and services.

During the second quarter, Mrs. Talboo will be making classroom visits during student‟s

PRIDE blocks to remind students about the importance of self-advocating, getting involved,

and always remembering the consequences of your actions. Mrs. Talboo will also be

introducing students to Naviance/Family Connections and students will take an online

Career Interest Inventory, as well as the Myers Briggs Personality Test. Students interested

in attending the Introduction to Health and Medical Science Program at Monroe Technology

Center should consider attending the MTC Open House on February 6, 2013 from 6:30-8:00

if they were unable to attend the November Monroe Shadowing Day.

Fall Guitar Events and Information PHVS guitar students will present their Fall Concert on December 11 at 7 PM in the school auditorium. Come see the beginning, intermediate, advances, and artist level classes along with the soloists, and small groups show what they have learned this Semester. This is the first of three concerts the guitar classes will present this year, and the concert theme is mostly classical music. Free of charge and open to public. Loudoun Youth Guitars, a select after-school guitar ensemble led by Dr. Lončar has been invited to perform at the "Excellence in Education" Banquet on December 2. The 18-member group consists of students from a number of Loudoun schools and Park View's Cynthia Vu plays First Guitar in the group. LYG have performed at the Croatian Embassy, the National Institute of Health, and Salisbury University, among other venues.

Please feel free to call the nurse, Linda Merola at 571-434-4504 if you have any questions about medication at school.

Remember that inhalers are prescription medication and therefore require a doctor's order. Forms may be obtained under clinic information on the PVHS

website and faxed to the nurse at 571-434-4501.

scholarship opportunities are approaching quickly. Here are some scholarships that are available.

APPLICATION DETAILS:

o Most regular applications are due between January 1 and February 15. Keep

copies of everything you send to colleges.

o Request your high school send your transcripts to colleges two weeks prior to

college deadline.

o Make sure your colleges have received all application materials.

o Send your SAT scores from www.Collegeboard.com, ACT scores from

www.actstudent.org

FINANCIAL AID: APPLY EARLY. APPLY RIGHT.

o You and your family should save this year‟s pay stubs to estimate income on aid

forms that you will file early next year.

o Submit your FAFSA as soon after January 1 as possible.

o Men 18 or older must register for the selective service to receive federal financial

aid.

o Many priority financial aid deadlines fall in February. To get the most attractive

award package, apply by the priority date. Keep copies of everything you send.

PVHS Counseling Office Deadline: You must submit your request to your counselor at

least 2 weeks prior to each college deadline. For January application deadlines, you

must submit your request to your counselor 2 weeks prior to winter break, December

7th. No exceptions. Applications for transcript requests are available in the Guidance

Department. There is a $3 fee for each transcript.

Application Deadlines: Seniors are reminded to double check their college’s deadline to

ensure all application forms are turned in to the School Counseling Office at least 2 weeks

prior to the due date. Below is a list of colleges with the application deadlines:

The following students are eligible to test during the Fall 2012 SOL Test Administration that occurs

December 3th

:

-Any student who has successfully completed a course for which there is a corresponding SOL test, but

either have not taken or not passed the test.

-Students who have transferred from a setting other than a Virginia public school, and who need to take

any SOL test to verify a credit.

-For English: RLR we will test those students who are eligible to graduate by August 2013; however, we

will wait to test those students in April (term graduate testing) who are in English 11 for the first time.

Any student who scores within the 375-399 range during this testing window and/or any term graduate

(student eligible to graduate by August 2013) that is still in need of passing a SOL will become eligible

for an expedited retake. Expedited retakes will be administered December 11-14th

.

Students will have an opportunity for remediation during their PRIDE periods as well as at Homework

Club afterschool. They will be notified of the date and time that they will need to test.

PARK VIEW HONORED WITH NATIONAL MEDAL FOR MUSEUM & LIBRARY

SERVICE

Being a librarian never means having to say “Shhhhhh!” That‟s the philosophy at Park

View High School.

And it must be working, because Park View‟s Library Media Center has been selected

as a recipient of the National Medal for Museum and Library Service by The Institute of

Museum and Library Services. This is the highest award given to American museums

and libraries for service to the public.

The National Medal for Museum and Library Service honors outstanding institutions

that make significant and exceptional contributions to their community. Park View was

nominated for this award by one of its English teachers, Megan O‟Meara, who learned

about the National Medal for Museum and Library Service at the National Book

Festival.

Park View is the first high school and only the second school ever honored with a

National Medal for Museum and Library Service. (This award was established in 1994.)

The medal will be presented during a ceremony on November 14th in Washington, D.C.

Park View Student Council Association President Pablo Rivera will travel to

Washington and share the impact the high school‟s library has had on his life.

“We try to have all kinds of different activities that make Park View‟s library more than

just a place to come and study, although it is that too,” said Park View Librarian

Candace Main Rush. “We want to make it a community spot where there‟s a lot going

on in what we call a „learning commons.‟ There are lots of different ways of learning;

there‟s visual learning with our displays, there are ways to listen and learn with our

student concerts and there are ways, of course, to find „hot reads‟ and to do research and

get instruction and help with 21st Century tools.

“We need to re-image the library and that‟s what we‟ve been doing. At Park View, we

want to make it more service-oriented, more welcoming; a gathering place that provides

all sorts of resources and tools that are available for student learning and teacher

collaboration. As student learning changes and there‟s more awareness of different

styles of learning, we try to build them into the instruction and services that we offer.”

Dr. Virginia Minshew, Park View‟s principal, said events like Guitars on the Go, the

Community Jigsaw Puzzle, chess after school and computers that are constantly open

for student use make the library a place where students socialize as well as learn.

“That‟s what a library-media center ought to be. From 7:45 in the morning, until we

close in the afternoon you can find all kinds of activities, kids gathering. It is not a quiet

place.”

Librarians Candace Rush and Jennifer Fisher offer extended hours to students. But it‟s

their attitude that makes Park View‟s library special, Minshew added.

“It‟s the warmth and the welcome they bring. Everybody is welcome there. There are kids

who have found a niche in the library. They started a Library League, where kids can be

library helpers. Those are kids who feel like they‟re involved and that they‟re a part of

something.

“Kids have got to find a place where they feel like they belong. The library here at Park

View offers a lot of kids that opportunity.

“The fact that we‟re the first high school ever to win this is truly a reflection of the work

done by Mrs. Rush and Mrs. Fisher to make the library the center of learning at Park

View. It also says a lot about the engagement that goes on in the library; not just with

books and reading, but with establishing community.”

“You‟re not what my high school librarian was like,” is a comment Fisher said she often

hears. “It is the job of the librarian to be welcoming so people feel free to approach her

with whatever questions they may have.”

Fisher said students will sometimes get quiet when they see her coming even though she‟s

never told anyone to be quiet. “I was just coming over to see if you need help.”

Help is something Rush and Fisher said they‟re always happy to offer.

The Park View library has 25,000 cataloged items and 67 magazine titles. It also provides

access to audio books, e-books, online resource databases, on-demand video and print and

digital production equipment and software. While books may not hold the prominence

they once did in libraries, both Rush and Fisher said the role of the librarian is more

important than ever.

“Books are now becoming more digital, obviously,” said Rush. “But even though people

say „We don‟t need libraries anymore, we‟re all digital‟ that‟s not really true. Libraries are

essential in terms of mining those resources. There‟s so much out there. Students, in

particular, need help in deciphering those resources; weeding through them to get to the

ones that are really authoritative.”

Rush has spent the last eight years at Park View and has more than 35 years experience as

a librarian. During her career, she has started four libraries.“When I say „started‟; I typed

catalog cards, I filed catalog cards, I instructed kids on how to use catalog cards. There

were no computers at all in the schools I worked in. We were in a rural area. From that

background, it has changed immensely.”While the ways in which information is delivered

has changed dramatically, Rush said the role of the librarian has remained the same. “The

primary mission is to serve patrons and to provide access to information of all different

types to whomever needs it for whatever purpose.”This is Fisher‟s fourth year at Park

View after serving for six years as a teacher at Dominion Trail Elementary.

She said there is one question she answers almost every day. “„Can I borrow a pencil?‟ That‟s

not too high-tech, but that just shows we are there to meet whatever needs the students have and

that they know they can ask for that help.”And yes, they have pencils in Park View‟s library,

along with a couple of nationally recognized librarians.

Attendance Rules 2012-2013

All early dismissals must be turned into the attendance window before 9am or the

parent/guardian will have to come into school and sign out the student.

Phone calls for early dismissals will no longer be accepted. A note must be turned into the attendance office before 9am or must be faxed to PVHS in order for the early dismissal to occur. Please fax to 571.434.4501.

Family reasons are no longer accepted as an excused reason for tardies or early dismissals, unless the reason is specifically stated.

Oversleeping and traffic issues are not accepted as excused tardies, even with a note from the parent.

Early dismissals for reasons of going out of town will be counted as unexcused.

All requests for vacations, going out of the country, etc. must be submitted in writing to Dr. Minshew for approval. All notes must be turned in a minimum of two weeks prior to the first absence.

Proper documentation is required for any absence, tardy, or early dismissals, in order for it to be counted as excused. Proper documentation is defined as a note from the doctor or dentist, court system, or other documents as deemed appropriate. Parent’s notes are no longer accepted as excused.

By Virginia state law only the following are valid reasons to be tardy: medical or dental appointments, illness, judicial, or death in the immediate family. In order for a tardy to be excused, a student's parent/guardian must call in the tardy or send in a note. A parent note will NOT excuse a medical, dental or judicial appointment. The student must provide an official physician or court document in order for the tardy to be excused.

An early dismissal may be granted for personal illness, death in the family, medical appointments, court appearances or religious holidays. A student wishing to leave school grounds for one of the above reasons must present a note from his/her parent to the designated attendance office before 9:00 a.m. If a student forgets to present their note at the designated time, the parent must come in to sign out the student. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL CALL-INS BE

ACCEPTED. If a parent forgets to send a note in with the student, he/she must fax

a note or come in to sign out the student.

Food in Schools: Expectations for the Health and Safety of All Students

Loudoun County Public School (LCPS) students have the right to a quality education in a supportive, safe, and healthy environment. As stated in the LCPS guidelines presented in 2010, Caring for Students with Food Allergies in School), healthy eating habits and proper nutrition are important for all students.

The Individual Health Care Plans of students in the classroom must be followed. Parents/guardians will be notified so they can determine in advance whether a particular food item is safe for a child with life-threatening allergies.

All students are encouraged to eat healthy snacks. Foods containing allergens should not be consumed in the classrooms of students with food allergies.

Sharing or trading food in the classroom or cafeteria is not permissible and is a safety practice that has been in place in LCPS for several years.

When student birthdays are recognized at school, only non-food treats are allowed.

Non-food items will be used when classroom rewards are considered. Inclusion of all students in classroom rewards is essential.

Foods containing allergens specific to a student are not to be used for class projects, parties, holidays and celebrations, arts, crafts, science experiments, cooking, or other purposes.

Students are encouraged to assume increasing responsibility for healthy and safe food choices as they progress from elementary to middle and high school.

Caring for Students with Food Allergies in School is available on the LCPS website under Administration—Pupil Services—Keeping All Students Safe.

Bullying and Harassment: Expectations for All Students

All students have the right to attend school where their individual differences are Respected and where they are free fear of harassment and bullying. LCPS actively

Upholds and supports offorts to prevent harassment and bullying. Incidents of Harassment or bullying should be reported to the principal or designee immediately. Bullying:
