“Winter is coming!” It’s time to hunker

down to a nice, cozy fire. In our rural

home, we have an energy-ecient

wood stove for supplemental heat, and

to enjoy the ambiance of a fire on a

cold winter night.

When we don’t have time to cut our

own, we typically order seasoned wood

and have it delivered. Some companies

will stack for an extra charge, but we

like to do it ourselves.

Firewood delivered by dump truck,

however, ends up in a large, jumbled

pile in the yard. So… there you are –

now you need to move and organize

this mess. Where to start?

STACKING WOOD AS A

PUZZLE CHALLENGE

At first, the job can be overwhelming.

It feels like a repetitive and boring task

ahead of you. With the right mindset,

it can become a great physical and

mental challenge.

Stacking firewood is basically solving

a geometrics problem: how do you fit

those random-sized pieces together to

form a solid, stable structure?

Whether stacking in a woodshed, or

between posts, start with the half-circle

pieces. Lay them flat-side down to build

the base. Add more levels, keeping

it as flat as possible, using the best

combination of angles and shapes for

a level surface. It won’t be perfect, but

this is where the mental acuity kicks

in. You will start to see patterns and

combinations that work best. Your brain

quickly assesses even irregular pieces

to place them in the right spot. It’s like

playing a physical game of Tetris as you

build each level.

MOVEMENT AND MEDITATION

Once you settle into that rhythm, let

your brain switch to

auto-drive as you slip

into the meditation of

the moment: moving,

measuring, solving,

then moving again.

The physical activity

stimulates blood flow and

endorphins to the brain.

Eventually, your thoughts

will focus on the activity

at hand. Take your time.

This is a great way to

spend a cool, crisp winter

day - exercising your

body on the outside and

your mind on the inside.

Soon, you’re done before you know it.

You now have the gratification of a nice

stack of wood, a physical workout, and

a refreshing, mindful meditation.

There is an expression “Firewood

warms you three times - cutting,

stacking and burning.” Now you can

add a fourth dimension - it also warms

your brain!

Now go inside, relax, and enjoy a nice

warm fire. You’ve earned it.

When we adopt an animal and bring it into our home, it becomes part of the family.

Just like the human family members need food, shelter, health care, and protection from harm, so do our pets. Domesticated pets depend on us for all these things. Something else members of a family need and enjoy is time outdoors. Since pets are animals descended from wild creatures long ago, we might feel like it’s okay to let them roam freely outdoors. But this choice can be deadly, costly in vet bills, and ultimately very sad for a family. Pets rely on their humans to keep them safe, indoors and out.ere are numerous dangers for pets

when le unattended outdoors. e most obvious is being hit by cars. Other dangers are less obvious, such as poisons. ough you may use pet-friendly products in and around your home, there’s no guarantee that your neighbors do the same. Common lawn and garden products, including insecticides and pesticides, may cause anything from mild irritations to toxic poisoning. Automotive coolant (antifreeze) is oen sweet and brightly colored, which can attract curious pets. Ethylene glycol in coolant is fatal to dogs and cats if ingested. Another risk to domesticated animals

roaming freely outdoors are the wild creatures who also roam freely, even in urban areas. Members of the Nextdoor.com online community have reported numerous coyote sightings this year in neighborhoods near Vancouver’s downtown area and even on the main campus of Clark College in broad daylight. As the population of Southwest Washington increases so do the populations of a variety of wild animals such as opossums, raccoons, feral cats, and coyotes. ey are merely seeking food and shelter which humans have in great supply, so it makes sense why they choose to live among us. ese animals are rarely a danger to humans as long as they are le alone. ey are also an important part of nature’s food chain to help keep vermin populations under control. Unfortunately, our small breed pets can also be seen as a meal for a hungry coyote. And any sized pet can nd themselves on the bad side of a foraging raccoon or cornered opossum. ey may look cute, but their teeth and claws can be deadly to another animal. Keep your garbage cans secure and don’t feed pets outdoors to reduce these kinds of visitors to your home.Having a pet doesn’t have to mean

keeping them a prisoner indoors. ere

are many ways your pet can safely enjoy time outside. For cats, some homeowners have constructed elaborate luxury outdoor cat pens known as “catios.” ese include ramps and climbing structures as well as perches where cats can lounge and sni the breeze. Some cats enjoy being taken on walks in enclosed cat strollers where they can safely oversee their surroundings. Every once in a while, you’ll even see a cat on a leash, though it is rare. For dogs, many love to go on leashed

walks through their neighborhood sning at their favorite “pit stops.” Other more energetic dogs are great partners for nature hikes on trails where they are allowed. Leashed walks and hikes are fun but running free is the true joy for most dogs. ere are o-leash dog parks in Vancouver (www.dogpawoeashparks.org) where friendly dogs can play within a fenced enclosure. Overall, dogs just enjoy being with their humans, even just spending time playing in their own fenced yard.Of course accidents can happen when

a dog jumps a fence or a cat slips out an open door. Help ensure your pets safe return with spaying/neutering, ID tags/chipping, and staying current on their vaccinations.
