MATHS

Task Comparing and Ordering fractions:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nH7s9SIjwus comparing fractions video

Work sheet- see Appendix 9a / 9b

• Comparing and Ordering fractions

Additional support- see Appendix 8 fraction wall

Challenge- see Appendix 10a

• Describe the fraction • Do you agree?

Parent/carer guidance:

If children require additional support with understanding please find fraction wall in Appendix 8 this will assist children in their pictorial knowledge of comparing fractions.

See Appendix 10b for answer sheet.

Additional support- https://www.theschoolrun.com/teacher-tricks-fractions

LITERACY

Task:

1. Watch https://tinyurl.com/yd6eldl5 to 51 seconds. Then discuss with someone – what do we know about the boy so far?

2. Look at the words and phrases from Appendix 1. Are there any on there that you don’t know the meaning of? Use a dictionary to find out their meaning.

3. Select a few words and decide where would you place them on the importance zones Appendix 2 (red being not very important, green being very important). Some words might be unimportant because we don’t know if he has that quality or not! Can you find any?

4. Choose a word from the green zone and use thesaurus.com to find some synonyms!

Parent/carer guidance:

Show the children the first part of The Black Hat film up until where the boy goes into the woods and finds the hat (32 seconds) The children will watch this section again but think about the following question. What do we know about the boy? Discuss with the children about what they have seen and heard from the film. Children then use words and decide which are the most relevant when describing what they know about the boy so far. They complete a thesaurus activity.

SCIENCE

Task:

1. On your daily exercise in your garden or on a walk to the park, collect a sample/take photos of wild flowers, weeds, sticks or plants (don’t pick planted flowers or plants). They can be dead or alive.

Page 3: Home Learning Year 3&4 Week 4 BK › wp-content › uploads › 2020 › 04 › ...• Comparing and Ordering fractions Additional support- see Appendix 8 ... If children require additional

2. Can you group them into different groups? Can you describe them in different ways? You could draw scientific diagrams (with labels) of your collection or even use photos to create a Pic Collage.

Parent/carer guidance:

Children can have the opportunity to photograph or pick wild plants/flowers to classify and sort (an important line of scientific enquiry). They can use this as an opportunity to practice describing the collections which builds on their literacy lessons this week.

Work sheet- see Appendix 14a / 14b

• Ordering fractions

Additional support- see Appendix 8 fraction wall

Challenge- see Appendix 15a

• Find the missing denominator • Do you agree?

Parent/carer guidance:

If children require additional support with ordering fractions by size please find fraction wall in Appendix 8.

If necessary, please revisit the link from last lesson to support with understanding.

See Appendix 15b for answer sheet.

LITERACY

Task:

1. Watch https://tinyurl.com/yd6eldl5 to 51 seconds. Can you think of a word or simile to describe the forest?

2. Imagine that you have found yourself in the middle of a dark forest and you’re going to walk through it. It will get darker and deeper before you pass the boy’s cabin home and you will then find your way out again.

3. Look at the images in Appendix 3. Can you write some sentences using prepositions to describe where things are in the forest? For example, ‘In the distance...’, ‘under a log’, ‘up a tree’...Use the phrases in Appendix 4 to help.

4. Play the next part of the film and stop as soon as the boy places the hat neatly on his head.

Parent guidance:

Children re-watch the clip to 51 seconds. They will use prepositions to describe what they could see as if they’re walking through the forest, writing in first person.

HISTORY

Task:

1. Visit: https://tinyurl.com/ya2gjbt6 2. Watch the video and answer the activity on the same page. 3. Create a fact file (a collection of facts) about Robin Hood in any way you want – you can

include drawings and photos if you wish! 4. Was Robin Hood right to rob from the rich to give to the poor? What would you think of

Robin Hood if you were rich? How would you feel if you were poor?

Parent guidance:

Children are to research about Robin Hood, a famous forest dweller, creating a fact file. You can then have some discussions about issues such as the sharing of wealth and looking after people who are less off or disadvantaged in the modern world (and if there are modern day Robin Hoods out there!).

Task Fraction of an amount (unit fractions):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1Y6CpIimLg please watch link before completing task

Work sheet- see Appendix 16

• Fraction of an amount (unit fractions)

Challenge- see Appendix 17

• Fraction investigation

Parent/carer guidance:

Unit fractions- a fraction where the numerator is 1. For example, ¼.

Additional information: https://www.theschoolrun.com/teacher-tricks-fractions

LITERACY

Task:

1. What do you think will happen next in the film? Make a prediction and tell someone about it.

2. Today you are going to pretend that you are the boy from the film and that you have discovered a black hat in the middle of a forest. You will use drama to help them understand how the boy must have felt. With an adult, act out how you might express your feelings at walking through the forest and finding the black hat. Think about your sentences from yesterday, what might be around you as you walk?

Parent guidance:

Page 5: Home Learning Year 3&4 Week 4 BK › wp-content › uploads › 2020 › 04 › ...• Comparing and Ordering fractions Additional support- see Appendix 8 ... If children require additional

Ask the children to remind you about what we know about the boy so far. Ask: we know that the boy has an ordinary and lonely life. How do you think he would feel if he found a black hat in the forest? Act out walking through the forest and adding expression to show different types of feelings e.g. looking shocked, feeling lonely...

GEOGRAPHY

Task:

Can you research the answers to these questions and record them using an app or pen and paper:

1. Where is the largest forest in the world? In Europe? In the UK? Find them on a map! 2. How many varieties of trees are there in the world? How many trees can you name? 3. What is a deciduous tree? 4. Why is Sherwood Forest so famous? 5. Find a recipe for a ‘Black Forest Gateau’ and see if you can make one!

Parent guidance:

Children have already learned about the impact of deforestation This will help re-cap their learning and ties in with their literacy activities this week. Task 5 is optional given the circumstances and availability of ingredients but perhaps one for the future!

MATHS

Task- Fraction of an amount (non- unit fractions):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgrF1TYXP6Y please watch link before completing task

start at 2:10

Work sheet- see Appendix 18

• Fraction of an amount (non- unit fractions)

Challenge- see Appendix 19

• Would you rather?

Parent guidance:

Non- unit fraction: a fraction where the numerator is greater than 1. For example, ¾.

Additional information: https://www.theschoolrun.com/teacher-tricks-fractions

Page 6: Home Learning Year 3&4 Week 4 BK › wp-content › uploads › 2020 › 04 › ...• Comparing and Ordering fractions Additional support- see Appendix 8 ... If children require additional

LITERACY

Task:

1. Read Appendix 5. 2. Re-write Appendix 6 by using adjectives, adverbs and prepositions to make it more exciting.

You can use the boring sentences to start you off. Check for grammar and punctuation! 3. Make a prediction about what is going to happen next!

Parent guidance:

Read Appendix 5 to the child without expression. The children should realise that there is little excitement and suspense. Ask: can you suggest ways in which to improve the piece? Encourage the children to think about their own writing targets. Have you noticed anything about the punctuation? Children re-write a boring version and then make a prediction about what is going to happen next.
