3. Short Answer Questions:
(a) The fax machine is connected with a telephone line. The copy of the message is put into
the fax machine, then the telephone number of the recipient is pressed on the key board of
the machine. The exact copy of the message reaches the receiver instantly.
(b) The post office helps us to communicate by offering facilities such as speed post, post
cards, inland letters, aerogrammes and postal stamps.
(c) Letters, e-mails, faxes and telephones are some means of personal communication.
(d) Electronic mail or the e-mail is a system of sending messages, pictures, files through
internet. Messages sent through e-mail are very fast and cheap. They can be sent anywhere
in the world.
(e) Documentaries are short films which educate people about real life situations.
4. Long Answer Questions:
(a) Personal communication takes place between the sender and the receiver. Personal
communication takes place between family and friends. Telephone, letters, e-mails and faxes
are some means of personal communication. It is different from mass communication which
takes place with a large number of people. Newspapers, magazines, television, radio and
cinema are the means of mass communication.
(b) Advertisements are an effective means of communication. They are very useful. They
give us the information about the products available in the market. Our government uses
advertisements through radio, television and newspapers to spread social awareness
messages among the people.
(c) Early humans communicated with each other through signs. They kept a record of their
lives by drawing pictures on the wall of caves. Later, they learnt to draw symbols to
represent sounds used in speech. This was their first alphabet. Then they learnt how to record
their thoughts and ideas on clay tablet, papyrus sheets, palm leaves and eventually paper. In
ancient times, means used for communication were very slow. Messages were sent through a
bird or with a messenger on a horse. Hence, it took many days or even months for messages
to reach.
