We hope you have fun competing against each other at home. Our next pack will be the last before the summer holiday. This will have a focus on Arts and Culture, with each year group learning about a specific language and the countries that speak it. The activities will cover all areas of the curriculum and should prove to be a great way to finish our school year. 19th June 2020

Dear parents and carers,

HOME LEARNING DURING CLOSURE PERIOD: Pack 6

Having recently reopened for children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 6, we now have children who continue to

complete all of their learning at home and we also have children who are learning both in school and at home.

The content of this learning pack will, therefore, be covered by the bubble leaders when, and if, your child is in

school then this work can be continued when your child is learning at home.

The information in this pack is from your child’s year group teachers outlining work that your child could complete

over the next two weeks: Monday 22nd June – Friday 3rd July 2020. This pack includes activities linked to RSE Day,

which is on 25th June. This annual event educates children about healthy relationships at an age appropriate

level. RSE Day encourages schools and the wider community to get involved so we encourage all of our pupils to

join in too.

We did not want the children to miss Sports Day, since for many this is an annual favourite, so we will hold our

Sports Day on Friday 3rd July. Teachers will be posting videos on Twitter throughout the day, challenging you and

your child to complete fun sports activities at home. These short films will then be available on the website at the

end of the day if you prefer to complete them all in one go, on an alternative day. For the children in school, we

will see whether guidance has changed by then, however, at the current time, we will not be able to organise for

children to do the activities in school because children cannot share PE equipment. We hope you have fun

competing against each other at home.

Our next pack will be the last before the summer holiday. This will have a focus on Arts and Culture, with each

year group learning about a specific language and the countries that speak it. The activities will cover all areas of

the curriculum and should prove to be a great way to finish our school year.

We hope that your child continues to enjoy their learning, whether in school or at home. Please stay connected

with the school, and your child’s teacher, by sharing some of your child’s home learning via the year group email

and following Branfil on Twitter (@BranfilPrimary).

Thank you as always for your support and understanding during this time.

Kind regards

Mrs Sansom, Headteacher

MATHS White Rose Maths

www.whiterosemaths.com/homelearning

We will now be using White Rose for your daily maths lessons. We use the White Rose Maths

scheme alongside Power Maths in school. The White Rose Maths Team prepares a series of five

maths lessons for each year group from Reception to Year 6 each week. Every lesson comes with

a short video showing you clearly and simply how to help your child to complete the activity

successfully. Click on the link above and follow the four steps below:

1. Click on the set of lessons for your child’s year group. 2. Watch the video (either on your own or with your child). 3. Find a calm space where your child can work for about 20-30 minutes. 4. Use the video guidance to support your child as they work through a lesson.

White Rose has set out a 12-week learning plan that means children can:

make sure they understand the main concepts they need for their work next year cover any new learning that they have not yet have done in school.

The 12-week plan

The plan shows the work that children will cover, week by week.

IMPORTANT UPDATE:

Although general feedback about the Bitesize activities has been positive, we have decided to subscribe to White Rose Maths. This means you will now be able to download the worksheets each week from our school website https://www.branfil.com/school-closure-home-learning/

Teacher Activities

Fraction Hunting Can you apply your knowledge of fractions to everyday life? What to do: 1. Find a recipe for something you could make (a meal, cakes, slime, whatever you can find!). 2. Write the ingredients on a piece of paper. 3. Find these fractions of the recipe and write it below the original ingredients list:

1

4 3

4 1

3 3

8

3

10

Product Hunt How many products can you make out of 4 digits? How to play: 1. You have the digits 4, 5, 7, and 8. You need to arrange them into a multiplication question like this: HTO x O = ? For example, you could make 458 x 7 =? 2. In each question, you can only use each digit once. Work out the answer to your calculation, using any method you like (but don’t use a calculator!). 3. Make a list of the different products that you have made on a piece of paper (remember, a product is the result of a multiplication). How can you make sure you have found all the possible products? Make sure you explain your reason carefully.

Perhaps you'd like to make up some of your own questions like these and send them to us.

READING Continue to read every day

You can choose any text type of your choice (e.g. newspaper, comic, book) from home, e-books

from the Havering library app or log on to Oxford Owl (see Spelling section below for log in

details) and select your colour band to read 2 to 3 e-books each week.

Ask your parents/carers to pose lots of questions to develop your understanding of the story.

Respond to the books that you read in one or more of the following ways:

Think about what other books you have are similar. How are they similar? What makes

them different?

Find a description of a character in your book. Have a go at drawing the character based

only on that description.

Try and retell the story but by changing every single detail in it.

Explain why you enjoyed this story to someone in your family.

First News

Each week we will be emailing a copy of First News to all parents which children can either read

on their tablets/devices or you can print off for them to read. There will also be a selection of

quizzes, puzzles and comprehensions in the same email which you can download and use when

needed.

Teacher Activity

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z4mmn39/articles/ztdvw6f Have a go at this activity to with reading and writing acrostic poems.

WRITING Continue to write regularly

Short Writing Tasks

Have a look at the Daily Lessons on BBC Bitesize, they’ll guide you step by step through a

style of writing or a grammatical feature; they even have activities for you to complete!

Once you have completed the activities, create a piece of writing inspired by that lesson.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/tags/zhgppg8/year-5-and-p6-lessons

Watch this video, ‘The Black Hole’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5_Msrdg3Hk and

have a go at creating a Public Service Announcement warning people of the dangers of the

Black Hole.

Extended Writing Tasks Week 1 Have a go at the lessons on Oak National Academy for writing a Persuasive Letter. The unit is made up of 5 lessons that you can work through each day of the week to write a Persuasive Letter. You can find the first lesson at:

Week 2

Watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bN1_h_eGitE&t=2s Have a go at the following activities over the course of a week to build towards writing a

retelling of this narrative poem from a different point of view.

Monday Watch the clip and create a storyboard of the key events from Death’s point of

view.

Extension: note down what adverbs you might use to describe Death’s actions

in your storyboard.

Tuesday Come up with some adjectives and similes to describe each brother and their

gift. You could lay this out as a mind map or in a table.

Extension: Choose powerful adjectives, precise metaphors, sophisticated

similes when describing.

Wednesday Use a poem such as ‘Walrus and the Carpenter’ to begin drafting your narrative

poem in the same style. Use one line from your source material and change the

details to fit your narrative.

In your poem remember to include:

- Adverbs

- Powerful Adjectives

- Precise Metaphors

- Sophisticated similes

- Stanzas to structure your poem

- Inverted commas if there is any speech

Extension: Develop a range of figurative language in your work.

Thursday Rewrite your poem, check your spellings and check that it all makes sense by

reading it aloud as you go.

Check against the success criteria from Wednesday.

Friday Find an audience. Perform your poem. Try as you do so to get a reaction out of

your audience, they might laugh or be scared or any other emotion. If you have

done a really great job, please share it with us either on Twitter by tagging

@BranfilPrimary or at our year 5 email address.

Using the picture of the day, describe what you can see. Can you use adjectives, similes and

metaphors to describe?

Imagine you are in the picture. Write a story explaining what is happening to you. What

is happening around you? Why is it happening? Where are you?

Use descriptive sentences to describe what is happening to you.

Can you turn it into a story? Add speech? Add characters?

SCIENCE Famous Scientists

This year we have studied a range of different scientific areas. Over the coming weeks, let’s do

some research on some of the important scientists who helped uncover the knowledge we

have been building this year.

The first scientist we are going to research is Stephen Hawking.

Find out as much interesting information as you can about this scientist and then find a

creative and interesting way to share that information. You could use PowerPoint, you might

create a poster or you might write a biography. Whatever you do, we look forward to seeing it!

Art Henri Matisse

Write 5 facts about Henri Matisse - can you share these facts with a family member? Can

you remember the facts by the end of the week?

Produce a piece of artwork inspired by Henri Matisse’s pattern and shape drawings.

Get Set Tokyo

Even though the Tokyo Olympics are not happening this year, we can all still get involved with

sports and exercise to help us keep fit and active. We have signed up to participate in Team GB's

Get Set Tokyo events where we could be in with the chance of winning some great sports

resources for the school.

To take part is very easy;

Visit https://www.getset.co.uk/travel-tokyo/log-activity

Type in the school's post code: RM14 2LW

Choose Branfil Primary school

Select your year group

Log the activity you have done

You can log your exercise as often as needed and the more we log, the more chance we have of

winning some fabulous prizes.

On the website, you will also find lots of great activities you can try with your families at home.

Treasure Chest

Place the 10 treasure items; socks, shoes, small toys at one end of the room or garden,

known as the treasure chest

Run and collect an item and return it back to the start as quickly as possible.

How many items can you collect in 60 seconds?

Can you race against someone else to see who can collect the most items?

R.E. What will make our borough a more respectful place?

What are the different religions and places of worship in Havering?

Find out about the different faiths and places of worship that are local to your area. Research

places of worship for the Sikh, Muslim and Christian faiths. To help you find out which religions

Challenge: Can you then compare what you have found out with information from a contrasting

British locality.

PSHE Time to Talk

Discuss these questions with your families and write down your thoughts, explaining your choices

clearly

Would you rather have a magic carpet that flies or your own personal robot?

Would you rather be the worst player on a team that always wins or the best

player on a team that always loses?

Would you rather have one eye in the middle of your head or two noses?

Would you rather play in the snow in the mountains or in the sand at the beach?

Would you rather meet a superhero or a cartoon character?

On Thursday 25th June, it is RSE day. This year the theme is ‘Books I love about love’. Here are

some activity ideas to recognise this day and theme:

Read a book with your child about love and healthy relationships. Investigate what digital books are available to borrow virtually from your local library.

Take turns to choose a song or piece of music with lyrics that have a message you like about love and relationships, or play music from another era that your child may not know. Does the music bring back memories you can share?
