Gardening is a rewarding hobby withthousands of devotees. A self-sus-

taining garden can be an efficient addi-tion to any home, but gardens requireupkeep and a certain measure of dedi-cation.

A self-sufficient garden is a garden thatsustains itself through proper planningand execution. Such gardens can almosttake care of themselves so long as thesoil is healthy soil, the seeds are reusedand organic material is produced.

When planting your own self-sustain-ing garden, consider the following tips.

• Start with soil. Healthy soil is essen-tial to a thriving garden. The soil musthave the right pH, correct texture andcomposition, and be full of nutrients.Very often the native soil in yards is notadequate to keep a garden thriving. Insuch instances, the soil needs to beimproved. Adding compost -- which canbe produced in the yard as well -- to thesoil will enrich the soil with nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium.

• Maintain proper soil consistency.Soil that is the right consistency, mean-ing the optimum balance of sand, clayand actual soil, is another necessity for aself-sustaining garden. The ideal ratioshould be 40 percent sand, 40 percentsilt and 20 percent clay. Having the right

balance of soil can secure root forma-tion and promote proper drainage.

• Test the pH. Certain plants need aspecific pH in order to grow. A neutralpH range is typically ideal for growingvegetables. A pH tester can be pur-chased from a gardening center. Amendthe soil accordingly to get the soil backto its correct level.

• Know the growing season. Vegeta-bles should be planted during the sea-son in which they will thrive. Peas, beetsand cabbage, for example, are cold-tem-perature vegetables, while cucumbers, squash and melons thrive in warm cli-mates. Plant accordingly so that the veg-etables will have the best chances forsuccess.

• Purchase quality seeds. Use freshseeds, particularly ones that have beenharvested from your own garden theyear before, to have the best chances forgermination. Or buy seeds from a rep-utable source, like a garden center or anonline retailer who specializes in veg-etable seeds.

• Start seedlings indoors. You maywant to work with seedlings indoors sothat you can monitor growth and carefor them more easily. Then transplantthe seedlings outside when they are sta-ble enough for the elements.

SEEDS in Honesdale a sustainable energy resource:

S ustainable Energy Education &Development Support (SEEDS)recently sponsored a free three

part Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Solar work-shop.

The workshop, conducted by MartinYoung, an experienced local solarinstaller who got his training from aSEEDS-sponsored course several yearsago, was held in the Honesdale ParkStreet Complex.

The free workshop was open to thegeneral public, and resulted in sixorders for solar kits for our area.Thefirst night offered an overview of Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Solar Installation, including costs, payback, and thereturn on a solar investment. Evalua-tion of sites for rooftop solar was alsodiscussed, and tips about new smartphone apps that help with the evalua-tion were shared.

Martin also advised on how to createdrawings which are required for localpermits. The basic informationrequired to make a decision aboutwhether to proceed with a solar instal-lation was covered. Sixty-four peopleattended our first session.

During the second evening of theworkshop, people began to do theactual work involved. All the equip-ment required to connect the invertersto panels, and panels to racking wasthere, including a solar panel, weigh-ing approximately 45 pounds. Martinencouraged folks to pick it up and feelthe weight of it. Loading these on tothe roof top is one of the most difficultaspects of a DIY solar installation.

Members of the SEEDS Solar Commit-tee built a roof top section that wasused for demonstration. Participantswent through the process of mountingthe rack and panel. Many helpfulinstallation tips were shared and theworkshop was considered informativeand engaging by the participants.

SEEDS provided baked goods and anatmosphere for friends to begin to col-laborate. A couple of folks were offer-

ing their help with another’sinstallation in exchange forhelp with their own.

The third and final sessionwas a more intimate discus-sion among the attendeeswho were most interested inmaking a DIY Solar Installa-tion kit purchase. Martinaddressed individual ques-tions, and talked about thefuture of solar. In his opinion, the current technology andefficiency in solar panels willnot be outdated for years tocome.

It was emphasized that the decisionto install solar is very much a financialone, and the return on the investmentof the outlay of money for solar powerwas reviewed. Martin explained SEEDScould help those ready to purchasenow by shopping for the group’s totalnumber of panels. Each kit contains 14panels. Six people signed up to pur-chase kits now, for a total of 84 panels.Martin can shop for the larger numberof panels and get more competitivepricing than someone buying 14 pan-els on their own.

This group of 6 will join an onlineforum to communicate with eachother throughout the installationprocess, sharing advice and helpfulhints. Six other participants, who werenot quite ready to order now, alreadysigned up for a potential second roundof orders scheduled for early fall.

It was an exciting and successfulworkshop that provided not only agroup rate purchase price opportunity, but also provided group support andcamaraderie.

More Solar Photovoltaic (PV) panelson homes in our area helps promoterenewable energy here, and helpshomeowners with their energy costs.SEEDS hopes to continue to offer thisworkshop every year, or twice a year, ifthere is enough demand.

SEEDS will also be making trainingvideos, and improving our workshopsbased on feedback from those whoattended. SEEDS thanks all whoattended, Martin Young for the time

and effort put into this series, and TheConservation District office for provid-ing a wonderful space for this work-shop.

For any questions on future solarworkshops, contact the SEEDS office at570-245-1256 or email [email protected]. You can also sign up now forthe FREE home energy assessmentSEEDS will be offering to home ownersthis summer. Visit www.seedsgroup.netto learn more and sign up online.

SEEDS is a community-based non-profit organization whose mission is todevelop a local renewable energy infra-structure, and promote more sustain-able living in our area. For more infor-mation, call or visit the website. Theoffice is located at 1030 Main Street –2nd floor of The Cooperage, Hones-dale, PA.

Solar panels, ‘cheaper by the dozen’

This is a solar panel, about 39 by 60 inches and weighing

just over 40 pounds.

An inverter that converts the DC elec-tricity produced by the solar panel, toAC current that we use in our homes.

E d Gavalla moved his wholesaleagricultural business specializ-ing in fully grown trees and

ornamental shrubbery to Pond Eddytwo years ago, although he’s been inthe nursery field much longer.

After house renovations, he’s alsogoing to live on the site bordering onthe Delaware River. He runs the firmwith his son and business namesakeJesse of nearby Eldred.

“I’ve been in this business for 35years,” he reminisced. “First in Mon-tague, NJ, then in Glen Spey in nurs-ery and landscaping and now here.”

Gavalla has been living in SullivanCounty since 1991.

Starting from the greenhouse andgarden center back in Montague,Jesse G’s nursery and landscape busi-ness has grown to service both localneeds and also residents in the tri-

state area – actors Susan Sarandon,Sara Jessica Parker and MatthewBroderick among them. Gavalla’scompany has also served actor TimRobbins and designer Todd Oldham, and his designs have appeared in InStyle and Nest magazines.

The company specializes in fullygrown ornamental trees. They also

employ several local people full timeyear-round and more during thesummer on apart time basis, mostlyhigh school and college students.Apart from supplying trees andshrubs, the company’s services alsoinclude landscaping and design:fences, stonework, fireplaces, “hard-scapes” and many more.

“We are establishing a niche,” Edexplained at his nursery full of treesand surrounded by woods. “We can’tcompete with the corporate stores.”

He added: “I came across the ‘Pot-In-Pot’ nursery system of plantingwhile touring nurseries in New Jerseyand Virginia. They were using thisnew technique. Basically, you plant atree in a pot within a larger pot andwhen the time comes to sell, you justpull the pot out, instead of the tradi-tional balling and burlap.”

Last year, Ed also took a course runby the Sullivan County Division ofPlanning and Environmental Man-agement at Sullivan County BOCESand Community College, entitled“Economic Development inAgribusiness and Microenterprise” toencourage business in SullivanCounty.
