Drainage issues on a property can costhomeowners thousands of dollars in potential damage. They can also cause safety issuesdown the line, such as mold or mildew accu-mulation on walls, breeding grounds forinsects, or even sink holes. It’s important toensure proper drainage occurs around a home.
Storm water runoff is a big culprit when itcomes to drainage issues. Over time stormwater can erode soft surfaces and redirectwater to places where it doesn’t belong. Also, improperly graded concrete work or mis-placed landscaping items can create waterpooling in undesireable areas. Other itemsused in a landscape can create trouble. Mulch or wood chip decorative accents can washaway during storms and clog drains or createwater ruts.
Repairing drainage issues can be an easy or more labor-intensive job depending on theseverity of water accumulation. Here are some remedies to try.
• Sweep driveways and walkways ratherthan using a hose to clean debris. This notonly saves water, but also it prevents excessdebris from funneling into storm drains oryour own property drainage system.
• Install gutter covers and removabledownspouts. This way you can routinely clean out debris that has collected, such as branches and leaves. Clogged gutters can cause rain-water to overflow and run down the foun-dation of a home, eventually infiltrating theinterior.
• Always ask for referrals when considering outdoor contractors. Make sure proper zoning permits and inspections are followed so thatgrading of work is in accordance with city ortown ordinances.
• Use caution when planting trees andshrubs. They could block the runoff of rain-water, or roots can compromise underground
d r a i n a g epipes.
• Consider installationof foun-dation drains to divertstorm wateraway fromyour building’s foundation, if water seepage is a big problem. Foundation drainpipes are per-forated and usually surrounded by gravel. The pipes disperse the water (instead of discharg-ing in a concentrated area) and the gravel con-tributes to infiltration of the water.
• Trench drains or yard inlets can catchexcess water if it pools or runs off in a particu-lar area. The drain will connect into a publicsystem and carry water off.
• Regularly maintain your septic system ifyou have one. Routine pumping of the tank, ensuring only septic-safe items are flushed, and avoiding harmful chemicals can help pre-vent a wet landscape from an overflowing sep-tic system.
• Drywells can be placed in areas that can-not be connected to a storm water drainagesystem. Drywells are filled with gravel andsurrounded by filter fabric. Water flows intothe wells and permeates the ground throughthe gravel.
• Sump pumps can be used indoors topump out extra water caused by a high watertable. They click on when water reaches a cer-tain level.
Being aware of drainage issues can prevent problems down the line. If you think you have a drainage issue, you may want to consultyour city’s public work department to viewdrainage plans in your area. A plumber orlandscaper may be needed to help resolveissues.

When parents decide it’s time for achild to get his or her own bedroom, that child’s reaction is often one ofimmense joy. However, as parents soondiscover, a new bedroom fills up almostimmediately, often creating a monu-ment to clutter in the process.
While parents are well aware of theoften painstaking process of getting kids to clean their room, the following tipscan add some space to a child’s bed-room and help make it cleaner at thesame time.
Remember it’s a bedroom. Manytimes a simple removal of excess fur-niture can help clear a room of clutterand keep in clean. When kids have anarmchair or extra furniture in theirroom, that often becomes one moreplace to put dirty or unfolded clothes. All a child, and even most adults, reallyneed in a bedroom is a bed, a dresserand possibly a desk to do schoolwork. While it might be nice to have a tele-vision (and TV stand) and a chair orloveseat in a bedroom, such items aren’t necessary and should be removed from any room that’s overwhelmed with clut-ter or simply short on space.
Get things off the floor. Open floorspace helps make a room seem larger, whereas a floor cluttered with too many shoes, a stereo or a stack of magazines
Add Some Spaceto Child’s Bedroom
will make aroom appearmore claus-t r o p h o b i c .For items that are currently on a floorbut deemed “must-have,” considerhanging shelves instead of simply put-ting everything on the floor or on thedesk or dresser.
Install closet organizers. Today’s kidsseem to boast far more extensive ward-robes than their parent. Unfortunately, that typically leads to overcrowded clos-ets, which then leads to clothes beingstacked on a bed, chair or desk. To curethis ill, consider installing closet organ-izers. A closet organizer can help opti-mize closet space and teach kids theadvantages of organization at the sametime. Instead of shoes and sneakersstrewn about the bedroom floor, forexample, kids can utilize a closet shoeorganizer, which can help them avoidtripping over random sneakers andshoes.
Place furniture in corners. Many chil-dren insist on having their own tele-visions in their bedroom. If this is a bat-tle parents can’t win, be sure to use cor-ner entertainment centers for the TVand video game console. This makes the room appear more spacious and utilizes an area of the room, the corner, that islikely going unused.
