Innovation Opportunity Diversity Success
ISSUE 4 TERM 2 4 JUNE, 2014
Oliver! I am hoping that last week all of you were able to
catch one of the six performances of our annual
musical production, Oliver! As usual it was an
outstanding production with students and staff
wowing the audiences with their imagination, flair
and enormous talent. The singing, acting and
choreography were beyond par with students
demonstrating truly remarkable commitment and
skills. Their performances were enriched by the 90s
grunge set design and heavy metal music appealing to both our young and ‘older’ audiences.
Special commendations go to Ms Cross for her creative and directing talent; Ms Jones for her
choreography; Mrs McDonald, Ms Bellia, Ms Harris and Ms Emerson for the brilliant set design;
Mrs Whitfield for her musical direction; Ms Votano and Mr Ballantyne for the sound; Ms Emerson
and Mr Ballantyne for the lighting design and Ms Levett for her backstage perfection. We are truly
blessed with such talented staff who are prepared to sacrifice many, many hours of their own time
to give our students the opportunity to shine in an experience they will treasure for a lifetime.
Please Do Not Let Your Teenager Take Their Smart Phone /iPad to Bed! Latest research confirms that electronic devices (Smart Phones, iPads, Tablets) interfere with
sleep brainwaves. If your teenager goes to bed and uses an electronic device just before they are
about to go to sleep they will find it difficult to fall asleep. By looking at your phone or tablet you
are actually telling your brain it is not time to go to sleep and rather than being relaxed you are
over stimulated. Many parents express concern about the fact that their teenager cannot go to
sleep and are often up ‘gaming’ during the night.

This is particularly disruptive to sleep patterns and habits. If we want our teenagers to function and
achieve at school, and in life, they need up to nine hours sleep per night. The best way to achieve
this is to develop a sleep routine by going to bed at the same time each night and waking at the
same time each day. Similarly, I urge all parents and carers to make sure their teenage children
‘park’ their phone and electronic devices in a charging ‘station’ each night away from the bedroom
so they can go to bed and sleep without interruption.
Half Yearly Exams and Reports
The Half Yearly examinations are complete with Years 7 and 9 sitting their exams this week. I have
been most impressed with which the majority of the students have approached their exams and am
looking forward to reading their Half Yearly reports when they are completed at the end of this term.
Year 12 parents and carers need to be aware that Year 12 were issued their reports on Monday and
therefore, should have shown them to you be now.
The Half Yearly Reports are important feedback on the progress of every student in every class. At
Glenwood the teachers put a great deal of time and effort into the massive task of report writing and
I urge all parents to compare their child’s progress with that of previous reports they have received.
All students need to by moving forward in their achievement of course outcomes and improving their
skills. Every year I challenge students to set themselves the goal of gaining a better report than their
previous one. I certainly hope this will be the case this half year.
Parent Teacher Evening
Year 8 and 11 Parent Teacher evening is scheduled for Tuesday 24th June, 2014 commencing at
3.30 pm and Year 7, 9 & 10 Parent Teacher evening is scheduled for Monday 28th July, 2014
commencing at 3.30 pm in the school hall. This is a great opportunity for parents to meet teachers
and gain valuable information on student progress. It is also an excellent time to seek the most
effective ways to support students and their learning. We will be using the same online booking
system as last year so please look out for the notification and information letter being sent home
with your child. It will also be advertised on Facebook.
Year 12 HSC Trial Examinations
Year 12 HSC Trial Examinations will be taking place in the first two weeks of next term. It is
imperative students make valuable use of their time during the holiday break in order to prepare
adequately for these exams. I know the Glenwood staff are planning holiday workshops for added
academic support so I urge all students to make use of these wonderful opportunities. Similarly,
those students working on practical projects, major works and performances really need to put in
the extra effort during this time in order to meet the Term 3 deadlines for these major works. Good
luck Year 12 and their parents and carers during this stressful time.
Sydney West Dance Festival, 2nd - 6th June, 2014
The talented dancers at Glenwood High School will again showcase their skills at the Sydney West
Dance Festival, The Evan Theatre, Penrith Panthers, between the 2nd - 6th June, 2013. The Senior
Ensemble will be performing and audiences are ensured of a professional and inspirational
performance from our fabulous dancers who are trained and mentored by the brilliant Ms Jones.
Should you wish to attend any of these performances please don’t hesitate to contact The Evan
Theatre Box office for tickets.
Telephone: 9629 9577 Fax: 9629 2796 Website: www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au
The Senior Ensemble will be performing on Wednesday and Friday evenings at 7.00 pm and the
Senior Ensemble.
Bus Travel
In NSW we are very fortunate to receive free public transport if we live some distance from school.
However, with this privilege comes the responsibility of offering your seat to a fare paying passenger
if they are standing. Parents are asked to reinforce this policy with their bus travelling children. It is
also a very polite and courteous thing to do as a young person and gains both your family and
school positive credibility in the community.
Congratulations
Throughout May we have had much cause for celebration as Glenwood students continue to
shine in many fields. Our congratulations goes to:
The Senior Dance Ensembles for their selection in the Sydney West Dance Festival;
Tametai Lomax, Year 11, who was selected for the NSWCHS U16s Rugby team yet again.
Tametai is one of our very talented sports people and this position is very well deserved.
Wesley Needham, Year 12, who has been selected to represent Australia at the Indo Pacific
Gymnastics /Trampolining Championships in South Africa from 1st – 4th July 2014. Recently at
the State Championships Wesley brought home a gold and two silver medals. A fine effort!
Our wonderful Year 8 Debating team, Nina Matani, Johnathon King, Joshua Brooks &
Patrick Gleeson who defeated Parramatta High School in this year's Western Sydney Years
7&8 Debating Competition!
The Lote Faculty who were quoted in the BOSTES survey on the study of languages stating ‘
It would be fair to have eligibility rules apply to ALL languages and not just Asian languages’
to ensure HSC equity.
The Oliver! Cast, our very own home grown STARS!
Meghna Khatri, Year 12, and Tankaran Mann, Year 11, for completing over 20 hours of
volunteering service outside school.
Renee Blakemore, Year 11 and Tiana Jaber, Year 9 represented Sydney West in the recent
CHS State Championships in Football/Soccer. Renee was named as a shadow player for the
NSW CHS team.
Our U19s Futsal team, Abuzar Awaz, Ryan Worlock, Shaun Robieson, Adam Surgeon
(Year 12), Hamish Callaghan, Chris Barbera and Caleb Chaplin (Year 11) who
convincingly won all games at the Penrith Indoor Centre on Monday 26th Mar 2014 and were
named Australian Regional U19s Futsal CHAMPIONS! A fantastic effort boys!

FROM THE DESKS OF THE DEPUTY PRINCIPALS
“I’m reviewing the situation.”
(Lionel Bart, Oliver!)
Last week, it was wonderful to see our fantastic school musical, Oliver! The cast, crew and
teachers have worked countless afternoons and Sundays to produce a high quality production that
helps build a sense of community within the school. It is fantastic to see the many talents of our
students shine brightly.
Term 2 has been a successful term at Glenwood High School so far. The school has a fantastic
reputation as a result of the commitment that students show to their learning both inside and outside
of the school. The school continues to receive positive letters for the way our students behave in
the community and show commitment to the school uniform. Glenwood High School is an excellent
school and students are the ultimate beneficiaries of this excellent reputation. This excellent
reputation is built upon our Positive Behaviour for Learning program, which focuses on the following
five core values and expectations:
respect for others
respect for self
respect for property
responsibility for actions
ready for learning
Study Notes
It is essential that students constantly ‘review their situation’ and reflect on their progress as
students. In addition, it is important for students to demonstrate one of our five Rs, ‘responsibility for
actions’, by taking control of their own learning. Students in most grades have now finished their
mid-course examinations. As students reflect on their recent assessment period, it is important that
they consider ways in which they could improve for their final examinations at the end of the year.
Sometimes, students leave their study and revision too late and find it difficult to consolidate the
information they have learned in class. It is imperative that students make study notes as they learn
new content in class. Students are encouraged to write study notes in all grades. The best study
notes are made on the day that students learn the information in class, so it is fresh in their minds.
The following website contains a wealth of information about study skills and preparing for
examinations:
http://www.enhanced-learning.net/doc/studyskillsfreebies/eleseffectiveexamprep.pdf
Students sometimes find it difficult to get started with study notes. The best way is to simply start
writing out information learned in class. If you encourage your child to write out three pieces of
information learned in each class each day, this means that they will write out 18 dot points. Over
the week, they will generate 90 dot points. Over the year they were generate 3,600 dot points of
Telephone: 9629 9577 Fax: 9629 2796 Website: www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au
information and a firm foundation for study notes, all from writing out three sentences from each
class.
NAPLAN
Students in Year 7 and Year 9 recently completed their NAPLAN tests on 13-15 May 2014. Our
students are to be commended for the way in which they conducted themselves during this time.
NAPLAN results will be released in mid-September. NAPLAN provides schools with important data
on student achievement and helps inform teaching and learning programs. Parents and carers
often have questions about NAPLAN and the following website can answer many of these
questions:
http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/parent-carer-support/parent-carer-support.html
Time Management
Teachers at Glenwood High School regularly speak to students about the need to manage their time
both generally and during examinations. This is an important skill that is needed in the workplace.
In addition, Year 12 teachers spend a considerable amount of time talking with students about how
to manage their time during examinations to ensure that they spend the appropriate amount of time
on each question. For example, for examinations with essays, students typically spend 45-50
minutes on each essay, depending on the specific examination paper. However, teachers have
increasingly noticed that Generation Z students do not wear watches. Students in this generation
have grown up with a much more technology than their predecessors and as such, use devices
such as mobile phones to check the time. This is a cause for concern in relation to examination
technique, which demands that students manage their time across different sections of multiple
papers. In particular, Year 12 students need to develop skills in this area.
As a result, it is important that all Year 12 students have a watch with them during their upcoming
trial HSC examinations to ensure they can effectively manage their time. It is also good practice for
students in other grades to get into the habit of managing their time with the use of a watch.
Trial HSC Examinations
In preparation for the trial HSC examinations, it is important for Year 12 students to be fully aware of
the resources available on the website of the NSW Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational
Standards.
Telephone: 9629 9577 Fax: 9629 2796 Website: www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au
In particular, students need to focus on reading the marking guidelines and notes from the marking
centre (http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/hsc_exams/2013/) and completing online multiple
choice questions (http://www4.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/) as a means of effective revision.
Students should complete as many past papers as possible, provide these to their teachers for
feedback and then use this feedback to perfect their answers.
Subject Selection
Thanks to all of the parents and students who attended the subject selection evening for Year 10
into Year 11 (2015) on Tuesday, 3 June 2014. This event was well-attended and provided students
with an excellent understanding of school processes for choosing subjects for the senior school.
Students are reminded to choose subjects that they are interested in and subjects in which they
excel.
Parents are asked to return the RSVP slip for the Year 8 into Year 9 (2015) subject selection
evening which will be held on Tuesday, 17 June 2014. This is an important event on the school
calendar and represents an opportunity for Year 8 students and their parents to find out more about
elective choices within the school and the structure of learning in Stage 5.
Chewing Gum
Parents and students are reminded that chewing gum is a banned item and has been a banned item
ever since the school opened. Glenwood High School is still a relatively new school and as such, it
is important that everyone keeps the school looking new and fresh. Unfortunately, we are finding
that the ‘look’ of the school is being affected by chewing gum being left on the ground and under
tables. Glenwood High School has a zero tolerance approach to chewing gum. We repeat that
chewing gum is a banned item. In recent weeks, the deputy principals have asked staff members to
report students possessing and chewing gum and we are satisfied that all students now understand
our expectations in this area. It is an important part of our PBL expectations that students respect
themselves and each other. Students found to be contravening the school’s expectations in this
area will be required to help beautify the school in their own time after school.
Parent Teacher Evenings
Parent/teacher evening for Year 8 and Year 11 will be held on Tuesday, 24 June 2014. Parent/
teacher evening for Year 7, Year 9 and Year 10 will be held on Monday, 28 July 2014. Glenwood
High School utilises an online booking system for interviews and parents are encouraged to use this
system to ensure they manage interview times.
Assessment Issues
If a student in Year 9 to Year 12 is absent for an assessment task, they must contact the relevant
deputy principal as soon as possible and provide a medical certificate for the absence and/or other
documentation justifying the absence. It is important that students familiarise themselves with the
school’s assessment policy, which is available on the school’s website. It is important that all
students in all grades know the rules and follow them.
Telephone: 9629 9577 Fax: 9629 2796 Website: www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au
In particular, we would like to draw attention to the following rule:
Students are solely responsible for maintaining backups of all personal data files,
independently of the school’s computers and network. Students should save their
files in multiple locations including emailing themselves or saving documents in
‘cloud’ services. It is unacceptable for a student to cite technological failure as a
reason for an appeal when the student could have saved their work in other
locations.
Otherwise, students may receive a zero mark and these marks may not contribute to the student’s
overall HSC mark submitted to the NSW Board of Studies.
Communication with Parents
Glenwood High School is a very large school and we have a Facebook page to help us
communicate with both parents and students. This can be accessed at:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Glenwood-High-School-NSW/159488217454512
We presently have more than 1400 ‘likes’ and this continues to grow each week. Our Facebook
page is an excellent source of information for reminders about activities, excursions, examination
timetables, parent evenings and office announcements. It is also an excellent showcase
demonstrating what a remarkable school we have, evidenced by the achievements of our students
in cultural endeavours, on the sporting field and in the classroom.
Uniform
Glenwood High School is most definitely a uniform school and students must comply with the
school’s expectations in this regard. Students are able to send a clear signal to their teachers that
they are ‘ready for learning’ by wearing the school uniform. Parents and students are reminded that
school pants are only able to be purchased from the school’s uniform shop. Alternative versions
from other commercial suppliers are not appropriate for school. We are getting students ready to
be effective future members of the workforce. In doing so, we recognise that their future
workplaces may require them to adhere to a uniform code or dress code. The school website has
detailed information on the school’s uniform policy:
http://www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/our-school/rules-policies/uniform-policy
In particular, our website has images of approved and non-approved shoes to assist parents in
purchasing appropriate footwear. The following are not acceptable forms of footwear and must not
be worn to school:
Telephone: 9629 9577 Fax: 9629 2796 Website: www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au
Student Driver Policy
Senior students are reminded that they must not drive a car to school unless they have read and
completed the documentation associated from the school’s student driver policy. Further
information on this policy can be obtained from the front office.
Glenwood High School is enjoying another fantastic year. We look forward to continuing our culture
of excellence throughout 2014. Until next time,
Belinda Young (Deputy Principal – Year 7 and Year 10)
Donna Healy (Deputy Principal – Year 8 and Year 11)
Mark Sutton (Deputy Principal – Year 9 and Year 12)
PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE
We are well into the Premier’s reading challenge for 2014. If you haven’t started, you still have plenty of time. You need to read 20 books by August 31st 2014. 15 of the titles need to be on the PRC list, and 5 can be free choice.
We are trying to make it as easy as possible to complete:
1. Any books read after September 1st last year count for the tally. 2. Year 7 will be registering in their library lessons. 3. A reading log will be given to all of year 7 in their library lessons to keep in their school diaries, and will be available from the library for other years. 4. Books read in class and in Wide Reading count towards the total.
There will be a school alternative for any Year 10 and Year 11’s who wish to take part.
As part of the PRC this year, our school library are focusing on a different genre each month. During June we are celebrating A U S T R A L I A N authors and their books.
Come into the library and have a look at our display on AUSTRALIAN! We have a list of all our Series Titles and Authors for you to choose from, and enter our reading competition for your chance to win a prize.
LIBRARY HELPERS A very big thank you to Monica Chun, Monica is a parent of one of our Year 7’s who has been coming in to help for 1 hour in the library on a Wednesday afternoon. Thank you also goes to Adjitpal Singh’s family who are always covering books for our Library students.
We would welcome anyone else who would like to help us in the library. There is always plenty of
things to do. Please call Mrs Achar in the Library.

Dear Parents,
Nationally consistent collection of data on school students with disability – 2014
Our school is participating in the collection of nationally consistent data on school students with disability.
We will be collecting information already available in the school about the support that is being provided to students with additional learning needs. Better data will help the Government plan for students with additional learning needs.
The data collection will have no direct impact on your child and they will not be involved in any testing process.
The NSW Department of Education and Communities will provide data to the Australian Government from all NSW public schools in such a way that no individual student or school will be able to be identified. In this way, we will ensure the privacy and confidentiality of all students.
All information is protected by privacy laws which regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. Information about the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy can be found here: http://education.gov.au/condensed-privacy-policy. Information about the NSW Government’s privacy policies can be found here: http://www.ipc.nsw.gov.au/
If you do not want your child to be counted in the data collection you must complete the attached form
and return it to the school before the end of Term 2, 2014. A decision to exclude your child will not affect
the support they currently receive.
Further information about the data collection can be found on the Australian Government Department of Education website:
http://education.gov.au/nationally-consistent-collection-data-school-students-disability
If you have any questions about your child being included in the data collection please contact the school.
If you need help with English to make an enquiry contact the Telephone Interpreter Service on 131 450
and ask for an interpreter in your language. The operator will call the number you provide and get an
interpreter on the line to assist you with your conversation. You will not be charged for this service.
Kind regards

Peer Mediation Program
During Week 4 of Term 2, 8 Year 11 students participated in a training program run by Mr Lucas Bendt, to become Peer Mediators within Glenwood High School. The Peer Mediation Program aims to reduce incidences of bullying by providing a school environment that is positive, caring, safe and friendly. Peer Mediation teaches students to resolve low-level conflicts using their peers as mediators. Through the use of the Peer Mediation Program at Glenwood High School, students will utilise communication channels allowing the disagreeing students to discuss their problems and come to a resolution with the guidance of the mediators.
Learning Centre
The Learning Centre is urgently seeking at least five reader/writers to assist students with their HSC
exams. School staff and family members are not allowed fulfil this function. Last year we had four
wonderful people from the Glenwood community volunteer their time. They did a fantastic job. If any of
you are reading this and would like to volunteer again, you would be most welcome! However chances
are that these individuals will be doing other things and we will need new people. Reader/writers are
needed for both the trial examination period (July 14-25) and for the HSC period (October 13-
November 3). Most students’ examinations last for a week or a week and a half during these periods.
The time commitment is five, two to two and a half hours sessions for each individual student during
the examination periods.
If you are able to help, even for part of the examination period or for a couple of examinations, please
contact Peter Neale, Madeleine Lewis or Rebecca Papageorgiou in the Learning Centre at school as
soon as possible. Obviously the more volunteers we are able to get, the less individual reader/writers
will have to do.
Olivia Callaghan, Lakshan Jayakody, Amal Cherki El-Idrissi, Rifka Samsudeen, Anushka Shrestha, Gursewak Singh, Sally Campbell & Sandy Moharib discuss strategies that could be used when in the roll of a Peer Mediator.

Chess at Glenwood
You could hear a pin drop. The air is thick with concentration. There’s a focused stillness. Senior
maths? Senior computing? Are we in the library?
No, we’re in C6 on Tuesday at lunch time for Glenwood High’s new chess club. Lachlan James, our
coach and a ranked Australian senior player (at the age of 19), moves around watching 8 or 9 pairs,
each hunched over a board. Occasionally he’ll murmur some advice or move for one of the players.
More than often, his subtle intervention changes the game.
I have been surprised at the level of commitment of the students who are participating in the chess
club. All levels are represented – beginners through to some quite advanced. Our aim is for everybody
to improve their game and perhaps later in the year, organise some friendly competition with other
local schools.
Anyone in the school community who would like to participate is more than welcome to attend on
Tuesdays at 1pm. Club members are already keen to try their skills against other players. Chess is an
interesting game for a number of reasons. For one, it is no respecter of age. Lachlan’s coach, a top
player himself, is 22 years of age.
I’m still trying to work up the courage to challenge Ayush Bilash in Year 7 or Raj Jayswal in Year 10. I
don’t like my chances.

Australian Regional Futsal Championships at Penrith
Last Monday 3 teams from Glenwood High School were entered in the Australian Regional Futsal
Championships at Penrith. All 3 teams made it through to the semi finals.
The u16s came up against the eventual winners of the tournament in their semi final and
unfortunately lost in a close game towards the end letting in 2 goals to lose 5-3.
The U14s team was made up of all year 7 students who were aged 12 and 13. As the tournament
went on they grew in confidence. This was evidenced in the semi finals when they came up against
a team who had already won against them in the pool games. They were 1 - nil down early in the
1st half to come back and win 4-2 at full time. This put them into the Finals and also into the next
level with the state tournament to be played later this year.
The U19s team went through their pool with quite a few convincing wins. They played very solid in
all matches scoring most of their goals through team plays rather than individual brilliance.
Considering they had to play their last pool match, semi final and final all back to back they showed
great skill and stamina to win all 3 games and going through the competition undefeated. Their final
was against Emmaus Catholic High School and looked like being a tight game due to Glenwood
only winning by 1 goal in their pool match. However all boys on the team pulled together for this
game and won it convincingly with the final score being 5-1.
We wish these teams all the best for the state competition later in this year.

on any topic, as well a 3 minute
impromptu speech on a topic chosen
by the adjudicator/s on the day. It is
open to both Government and non-
Government students aged 15 years &
older across the State.
David presented an insightful
prepared speech on the failings of the
United Nations & a topical impromptu
speech on "No Way Out" at the Arts
Unit, Lewisham on Thursday May 22.
It really was hard to believe that this was David's first venture into Public Speaking
& underlined how much he has benefited from representing the Western Sydney
Region at last year's Junior State Debating Championships at Sydney University.
David is an articulate young man, with an exceptionally good general knowledge
and awareness of social issues.
Despite not progressing any further in this year's event (only three students were
chosen to speak at State Semi-Final level on Thursday), David was an excellent
representative of Glenwood High School and is determined to go one better next
year when he is in Year 12.
Thank you to Joshua Brooks and Patrick Gleeson of Year 8, who assisted with
Chairperson & Timekeeper duties. From Mr Zivkovic

The school wishes to inform all parents/carers the exact
cash is required when paying for excursions and accounts. In
the past, the giving and collection of change for such
payments has caused undue stress and confusion for
both staff and students. The school is most happy to accept
payment by cheque or credit card for all expenses.
Eftpos Facility Due to the financial cost of the use of the Eftpos facility the policy of a
$10.00 minimum charge will remain.
