Create a budget-friendly home landscapeHomeowners understandably

envy the award-worthy photo spreads in lawn and garden

magazines, wanting to emulate those same looks on their own properties.

Scores of designers and landscape architects are involved in the process of creating those amazing lush lawns and perfectly placed plantings.

Although not every homeowner has the budget to create lavish landscape designs, it’s still possible for homeown-ers to create lawns they can be proud of.

• Establish your budget. The first step in any project is to determine how much money you can devote to the job. Once you have established the budget, all other factors can be built around it.

• Find an inspiration piece. Great landscapes are inspired by many things, whether it’s a memorable piece of art or a landscape layout in a lawn and gardening magazine. Use photos of

other gardens or neighbors’ yards as inspiration and build off of them. As long as the theme is cohesive, it will look pleasing to the eye.

• Consider the space and how you want to use it. Understanding the space will help you better allocate your budget. If your yard is more of a retreat, look for ways to create privacy and a vacation feel. If you have kids and entertaining friends is a main priority, focus on recreational aspects, such as a pool, playset and some durable plants. Understanding how to allocate your budget will help you to avoid spending money frivolously.

• Think about reclaimed or repur-posed materials. Brand new items can quickly eat up a budget. However, repurposing salvaged or inexpensive items can stretch that budget while add-ing some unique flair to a landscape. See if you can find an outdoor patio set that someone is giving away or selling

for a lower price. All it takes is a coat of paint and some new cushions to make it look like new. Discarded bricks or stones can be worked into a patio space or used to create raised garden beds. Purchase inexpensive flower pots and then paint them to make them look like stone or another desired material.

• Buy native plants. Native plants, shrubs, trees, and flowers will fare bet-ter than non-native, exotic plants. That means you’ll have to spend less time and money nurturing them into health, and less money having to replace plants that cannot withstand your climate.

• Consider perennial plants. Peren-nials may cost more at the outset, but the savings will be realized in the years to come.

• Hire a professional. It may seem counterintuitive to spend money on a landscaping professional when you’ve established a strict budget, but that’s

one way to save money. Landscape artists or garden designers have the experience to guide you in the right direction and help you avoid potentially costly mistakes.

• Use gravel in spots where plants don’t thrive. Gravel is an inexpensive landscaping material that can fill in voids where plants or ground cover simply do not flourish. Those working on limited budgets may be happy to learn gravel is typically less expensive than concrete or pavers.

• Ask friends or family for clip-pings. Don’t be shy about admiring the plantings of those you know. Flatter their good taste and ask if you can have some clippings to propagate yourself. These clippings can turn into lush plants in no time — with no additional spending required.

With some frugal spending, planning and budgeting, anyone can create a beautiful landscape.

Spring cleaning: 5 areas to repair, replace and refresh

Spring is one of the most popular times of year to clean up your home inside and out, make reno-

vations and take steps to ensure it oper-ates efficiently for the rest of the year.

But after the long winter months, the list of projects can pile up.

This year, focus on six key areas to repair, replace and refresh around your house now - to avoid spending more time and money later.

1. Repair your roof and gutters. Inspect the roof to check for loose or cracked shingles. Also, be sure to look at indoor ceilings for any signs of water leakage and get started on repairs before more damage occurs. Take a look at the gutters to see if there are areas in need of repair as well, and tackle them now before there’s too much rain.

2. Repair and reseal your deck. Remove debris and sweep the deck clean. Fix broken or bent boards and pushed up nails. Choose a cleanser for-mulated for your deck surface - whether for wood or composite - and apply a new coat of sealer and stain.

A local home improvement center can advise you on formulations for your particular needs.

3. Replace your furnace. As you make home upgrades, this is also a good time to upgrade your furnace for great-er home comfort and lower energy bills.

4. Replace windows and doors. Older windows can let unwanted air and moisture into your home. Installing newer, more efficient models will not only save money on cooling in summer and heating in winter, but they can bring the look of your home up to date.

Replacing your front door in a great color and style can also add to your home’s efficiency and instantly add curb appeal.

5. Refresh with paint. There’s noth-ing like a new coat of paint to transform and update the look of a home. It’s also one of the easiest and most economical home improvement projects you can undertake. Check out your local paint store for ideas and suggestions to help you visualize your home in fresh new colors.

6. Refresh your indoor air. The spring and fall months can trigger allergies, so consider adding an indoor air cleaner to help remove airborne particles and allergens such as pollen, dust mites, mildew, pet hair and dander and fungus and bacteria, so everyone in

your home can breathe easier.

Lastly, renew your commitment to home maintenance by creating a yearly schedule of home projects.

Backsplash finishes that enhance a kitchenWhere home decorating is con-

cerned, the space between your countertop and your

cabinets is the perfect place to express your personality.

Backsplashes are more popular than ever and are elements that can trans-form the look of the most important room in your home.

1. BrickA brick backsplash gives an instant

traditional, European-inspired cachet to your decor.

The installation requires a layer of cement, or mortar, and the kind you use may differ depending on the mate-rial the wall is made of.

Ask an expert about how to proceed.

2. HardwoodHardwood gives a warm, Zen touch to

any decor. However, this material must be suit-

ably waterproofed when used as a back-splash so it doesn’t get damaged by the inevitable splashes.

3. Decorative tilesStores stock decorative tiles in a wide

variety of sizes, styles and colors. With geometric patterns, glass and

ceramic imitations, there’s something for everyone.

If you have a limited budget and aren’t very handy, self-adhesive wall tiles are easy to install and give a nice effect at a reasonable price.

4. Wallpaper and glassHang some gorgeous wallpaper and

then have professionals cover it with a glass panel to create an eye-catching backsplash.

The made-to-measure glass panel will protect your wallpaper while providing a beautiful, transparent finish.

Compliments, guaranteed.

Create stress-free living with this single kitchen upgrade

Home is all about entertaining - barbecues, parties, pool parties, family dinners and the like.

All of a sudden, your kitchen is the nexus of activity as family, friends and neighbors grab drinks from the fridge while you’re prepping those burgers and mixing up the fruit salad.

Wouldn’t it be nice to get a little more space - prep space for you, more chairs for them, more floor space for all the through traffic to the backyard and throughout the house?

Enter the sliding door, creatively equipped with wall mount door hardware.

A wall-mounted sliding door can add up to 14 square feet of floor space, which opens up the kitchen to many different arrangement possibilities, including more prep space, additional tables and chairs for more guests.

Sliding doors also provide better flow to the room.

When your house is full of kids

running around, no one has to worry about a swinging door opening in their face, knocking food or drinks from their hands, or the door slamming from a sudden gust of air.

Heavy-duty wall mount sliding door hardware that’s ideally suited for walls that don’t accommodate a pocket door, and can hold any type of door up to 400 lbs.may feature a thick walled precision extruded aluminum I-beam track and heavy-duty extruded aluminum mount-ing brackets that can be positioned along the track to anchor into wall studs.

Four-wheel ball-bearing hangers assure smooth operation.

The 200 WM includes everything you need, including adjustable, detachable door hangers for easy door installation and removal (doors not included). An experienced handyman can complete the installation in about an hour.

The jump-proof aluminum box track is available in lengths up to 96” for sin-gle doors, and up to 192” for double door

configurations. The smooth rolling door hardware

and track exceed ANSI standards, which means it can successfully

complete 100,000 opening and closing cycles. They are also made in the USA.

Professional or amateur? 5 qualities of an expert contractor

Are you one of the more than 3 million people planning to renovate your kitchen or bath-

room this year?Or perhaps you’re adding on a room

or finishing your basement. If you’re going to hire a contractor for any home remodeling project, make sure you know the difference between a great contractor and an “OK” one. In other words, learn what separates a profes-sional from an amateur.

A quick Google search on “remodel-ing disasters” or “renovation mistakes” returns an endless number of night-mare remodeling projects and scams, where the homeowner is left dealing with unfinished projects or unsafe con-ditions, and ultimately spends more money rectifying the issue.

When making such a significant investment, you want to make sure you’re getting a reputable and depend-able professional so your project doesn’t become another horror story. It’s important to do your research, read reviews and check references before

you put your home in the hands of someone else.

So, now that you’ve narrowed down your list of potential contractors, how can you weed out the amateurs from the tried and true professionals?

Look for these qualities:

Focus:* Professional: Puts clients first and

will work with you to make sure your goals are feasible and that the project can get done on time and on budget. Treats customers, their families and their homes with respect.

* Amateur: Focuses on finishing the job as quickly as possible, with little regard for your family’s personal needs and schedule.

Livability:* Professional: Well-equipped to

deal with the No. 1 threat to livable remodeling - dirt and dust. Protects you and your family from annoying and potentially dangerous air particles by using the most effective tools and pro-cesses for dust elimination, such as the

BuildClean Dust Control System.* Amateur: Doesn’t have a proactive

strategy to manage indoor air quality and jobsite dust. “Brushes it under the rug” without concern for your indoor air quality, your belongings and the short-term and long-term health of you and your family.

Ethical:* Professional: Proactively addresses

challenges head-on, immediately notify-ing you of an unexpected issue.

* Amateur: Ignores problems uncov-ered during the project in order to keep it moving. Leaves behind things like hidden mold, leaky pipes or structural issues, putting the health and safety of your family at risk.

Risk:* Professional: has a license, certifica-

tions and insurance. Obtains all neces-sary permits, protecting you against unsafe work and legal issues. Guaran-tees their work.

* Amateur: Unaware of - or doesn’t care about - building codes, required

permits and health and safety regula-tions. Leaves you liable for any improp-er work, mistakes and in a potentially dangerous situation.

Value:* Professional: Communicates with

you to establish an estimate and negotiate a fair contract and payment schedule.

* Amateur: Underbids a project by thousands of dollars and is likely to cut corners to meet the budget or over-whelm you with costly change orders.

When beginning your remodeling projects this year, remember profes-sional contractors will put your inter-ests first.

They will proactively address poten-tial issues and discuss a livability strat-egy with you that includes timeline, logistics, dust control and safety. With an amateur, there are no guarantees, so you’re putting yourself and your loved ones at unnecessary risk.

All the rage: What’s trending in hardwood flooring

After months of online browsing, you’ve found the perfect, wide plank hardwood flooring. Or so

you think! You absolutely love the look, but how can you be sure it’s the right product for you? Ask the pros.

In order to make an informed, pur-chasing decision, Linda Jovanovich of the American Hardwood Informa-tion Center, (www.hardwoodinfo.com) suggests you do your research. “All hardwood flooring is not the same,” she says.

“Consulting with the experts will help determine if your product of choice will perform well in your unique home or office environment, and in your part of the country. And a little extra due diligence will eliminate guess-work, and the pain of an improp-er product choice.”

Getting started

Solid hardwood flooring is just that, solid wood milled to a three-quarter inch thickness that can be installed only on a subfloor of wood, plywood or oriented strand board. Because of its thickness, it can be sanded and refin-ished over several generations of use. As a natural product, it will expand and contract with the humidity changes in your home or office.

To compensate for this movement, installers should leave an expansion gap between the wood flooring and the wall, and install baseboard moulding or quarter round to hide the extra space. Remember, solid hardwood flooring cannot be glued onto concrete, does not perform well in high-moisture areas, and can require up to 14 days of accli-mation time.

Engineered hardwood flooring is not one solid piece of wood, but rather a cross-layer construction of five to nine layers of hardwood, bonded together

using heat and pressure. As a result of this process, engineered flooring is less likely to be affected by changes in humidity, reducing expansion and con-traction. In most cases, it can be sanded and refinished, however special care must be taken with the thinner pro-files. And it can be glued onto concrete, making it an appropriate choice for all levels - upstairs, ground level and base-ments - and a great choice for what’s all the rage these days, wide plank flooring!

Another great resourceRequests for wider boards, random

widths and rustic species full of charac-ter and color continue to dominate the hardwood flooring marketplace.

Engaging the services of profes-sional, certified flooring installers will ensure your gorgeous flooring will stay that way. These knowledgeable craftsmen understand the importance

of acclimation and the control of tem-perature and relative humidity. They in turn will pass that information on to you, the end-user. An educated cus-tomer is a happy one.

More on what’s trendingOther trends being followed by

NWFA member companies, especially custom, wide plank flooring manufac-turer, Shannon & Waterman (www.shannonwaterman.com), include a continuation of gray stains and fin-ishes, texturing of wood versus smooth finishes, utilizing random widths in a single installation, a preference for rustic species, selecting boards based on significant character inclusions like knot holes and saw blade marks, and a return to oil finishes.

Visit www.HardwoodInfo.com to see more on flooring, cabinetry and other products made from American Hardwoods.

Hanging items vertically frees up more workshop space

Despite other intentions, home-owners often turn their garages into storage centers for ran-

dom, little-used items, leaving little to no room for the tools and even vehicles that actually belong in a garage.

Such homeowners may turn to sheds to store their garage overflow and keep yard equipment at the ready, but stor-age sheds are not immune to clutter, and homeowners may find the very structure erected to keep them orga-nized requires a bit of organization itself.

A well-organized shed can save home-owners time and energy, as it’s easy to abandon or delay a project if you can’t find that pair of work gloves you stashed.

The first step to any organizing proj-ect is to take everything out of the shed and determine just what needs to go back in.

Items that do not belong in the shed should be moved to their rightful loca-tions or tossed in the trash if they’re no longer needed.

Make a pile of anything that will be kept, a separate one for donations and a third for garbage.

Take inventory of what you have so you know whether you’re missing any items or you have something and do not need to purchase another.

Now that the entire shed is empty, you can assess just how much room you have.

Utilizing vertical and overhead space effectively can free up areas on the floor for larger equipment.

Shelving, racks, pegboards and any other materials that enable you to hang or store items off the floor are good investments.

Visit your nearby home improvement retailer to find items that can simplify your storage. You also may be able to

put scrap wood to use to make your own storage shelves or a work bench. Extra kitchen cabinets can be installed in the shed to organize additional items.

In order to remember where items go, label or sort them accordingly.

Some people like to take organization a step further by tracing the outline of tools hung on the wall so they can be placed back in the same spot after use. This also serves as a visual reminder of which tools are missing and which ones need to be purchased.

Don’t forget to utilize shed doors as additional storage space. Hang fre-quently used tools, such as rakes and shovels, on the inside of the doors so they will always be easily accessible.

You also can repurpose storage solu-tions designed for other areas of the home.

For example, magnetic knife holders can be mounted to a shed wall to keep paintbrushes organized. These holders

also can be used to keep many small metal tools tidy. Metal funnels can hold twine and string. Thread through the narrow end of the funnel for a handy dispenser.

Keep dangerous substances off the floor and out of reach. Gasoline, chemi-cal fertilizers and other potentially dangerous substances should be stored high up to keep pets and children safe.

Make sure the shed floor is sturdy and level. This makes it easier to neatly store larger items.

Roll in the lawnmower, wheelbarrow and any other cumbersome items.

Now that more things are mounted vertically, you should find that you have more area to move around.

Taking the time to clean and organize a shed can help make anyone more productive.

Easy ways to beautify and protect your home exterior

When considering home improvements, people often picture costly, time-inten-

sive endeavors. But enhancing and protecting your home this season can be enjoyable-and deliver plenty of bang for your buck.

One of the fastest, easiest way to dramatize your home’s windows is to install vibrantly colored window head-ers and matching shutters.

Decorate the sides and back of the home exterior too, not just curbside. With the emergence of outdoor living and yards as gathering places, elegant window décor creates a warm, welcom-ing atmosphere.

Trend-wise, board-and-batten shut-ters are on the move, while raised-panel shutters are the most sought-after. Black is ever-popular for shutters and headers, and neutral colors are holding their own.

But the trend toward richer tones is growing.

Lush forest greens, autumn reds and deep blues are gracing more homes, creating attention-grabbing contrasts between shutters and siding.

For the main entryway, understated white or cream door surrounds comple-ment richly-toned shutters.

“Shutters and matching window headers are the easiest way to upgrade your home if you don’t want a mas-sive undertaking, but want the biggest impact for your investment,” saysTri-sha Anderson, product manager of Tapco’s Mid-America brand.

“Shutter and header colors change everything by enhancing the tone of your whole home. You’ll gain more satisfaction from rich-colored

matching shutters and headers than from virtually any other exterior home improvement.”

Decorative hardware on shutters is another easy, economical way to upgrade exteriors.

During new construction or exterior remodeling, Mid-America’s Sturdi-Mount fiber cement mounting blocks offer a simple, affordable way to enrich architectural beauty and provide water management capabilities that prevent costly damage to fiber cement, stucco and wood siding.

“SturdiMount is an innovative solution for mitigating water in fiber cement cladding. It’s an essential detail that protects home investments long-term, enhances aesthetics, is eas-ily installed, and saves contractors time,”Anderson says.

Designed with a robust, built-in flange, SturdiMount offers four distinct profiles, which professionals can install right out-of-the-box for exterior finish-ing touches that cover every need.

SturdiMount’s solid, level, crack-proof surface makes it easy to mount décor, such as coach-light fixtures and necessities, including outlets and vents.

For seamless aesthetics, SturdiMount blocks can be maintained in original white or spray-painted to color-match exteriors during whole-house paint jobs.

Distinguishing and fortifying home exteriors has never been easier. With Mid-America solutions, you can make a huge impact this season that lasts a lifetime.

Tips for organizing all those cords and cables

In a home decorated by a professional designer, cables and power cords are usu-ally fairly discreet or even invisible. If you don’t want to have to look at—or trip over—these unsightly but necessary components, follow these handy tips.

What you can doWith a few tools and accessories, you can minimize the visibility of all your wir-

ing and power cords. With some cord or cable covers, which are inexpensive and easy to install, you

will be able to camouflage cables running along walls, behind your computer and under your desk.

When several cords are in the same place, keep them together with a cord tube

so they won’t be so noticeable. Or, if you’re the least bit creative, conceal your cords in decorative boxes or flowerpots, etc.

No one will know they’re there if you don’t tell them.If it’s feasible, you can hide your kitchen appliance cords inside the cabinets,

your bathroom cords in the vanity and office cords in a drawer. However, for

safety, be sure to follow the building code at all times.

What a professional can doFor really effective results, call on the services of a professional to hide your

cords and main cables inside walls and ceilings. Or you could simply have new baseboards installed behind which you leave some space for them.

7 tips for an ultimate walk-in closetWhat fashionista has never dreamed of

owning her own walk-in closet? A spacious area for storing clothes, shoes and accesso-ries will make even the most meticulous of people happy.

Here are seven tips for creating an opti-mal layout in your walk-in.

1. Plan separate sections for each category of clothing: long dresses, business suits, casual wear, underwear, coats, etc.

2. Opt for short rather than long horizon-tal rods, as they are sturdier and will sim-plify your search for clothing.

3. Avoid overloading rods, drawers and shelves. If possible, sell or give away any clothing that you haven’t worn for at least a year.

4. Allow as much natural light as possible

into the room, or install enough lighting to be able to distinguish the most subtle colors. Who wants to realize—in the middle of an important meeting—that his navy blue tie is actually black?

5. Make room for a chair or even an arm-chair and at least one full length mirror so you can check your outfit on the spot—and feel like a movie star in your own home.

6. Make sure there is adequate ventilation in the room, especially if it is located near a bathroom. You definitely don’t want to end up with moldy clothes.

7. If you’re a shoe addict, place your collec-tion on a shelf or in open compartments in order to protect them. You’ll also be able to find the perfect pair for your outfit with one quick glance.

5 projects to create the bathroom you’ve always dreamed of

Work, social obligations, the kids - your life is go, go, go. Sometimes it’s impossible

to find even the slightest moment for yourself, until you head home to your bathroom oasis and find a calmness to melt your stress away.

But what if you don’t feel this relax-ation when you enter your bathroom? Then, clearly, it’s time for some changes.

To turn your bathroom from run-of-the-mill to the luxurious spa you deserve, recreate your space with any or all of these five projects and you’ll find the relaxing, soothing environment you’ve always dreamed about.

* Turn up the heat. Whether you’re just stepping out of the tub in the eve-ning or the bed in the morning, the last thing you want to do is walk on a cold floor.

It shocks the system and can elimi-nate any relaxing feelings you were previously enjoying.

Spas understand this, which is why

they’ve installed heated floors to keep your comfortable from head to toe. So why wouldn’t you do the same in your bathroom?

Replace your flooring with heated floors and, for an added perk, install heated towel racks as well.

* Find the space you deserve. You can’t feel comfortable when you’re cramped. Many causes of bathroom claustrophobia - hair care products, towels, shaving/brush apparatus - can be easily handled with improved mir-rored cabinet options.

Robern’s innovative AiO mirrored cabinets sport a clean, contemporary design that includes smartly designed storage space with added features like touch-dimmable task lighting, integrat-ed electrical and USB outlets and mag-netic storage for all those metal groom tools clogging up your counters.

Adding a bathroom vanity with func-tional storage helps to get the larger items off the counter and out of sight.

Robern cabinets are available in

a variety of decorative glass and overlay colors to fit any theme. You can also personalize the vanity with movable drawer dividers and bins, in-drawer electric outlets, or a hair dryer organizer.

* Let there be natural light. Create a more natural feel in your bathroom by adding natural light to your space with a skylight.

After a long hard day, imagine how calm you’ll feel with a skylight placed over your bathtub, allowing you to watch the clouds float by overhead while you soak.

* Upgrade your tub or shower. If you truly want to recreate the spa expe-rience in your bathroom, then upgrades to your tub or shower are a must. Larger tubs or contoured tubs create that spa feel and encourage long soak-ing sessions.

If you’re after that whirlpool feel, look for a tub with jets that are adjustable.

To make your shower more

luxurious, look for options that allow your shower to double as a steam room or sauna.

* Add a splash of color. If scented candles are already part of your bath-room routine, you understand the pow-er of aromatherapy - but do you know about chromatherapy?

This holistic form of healing uses colors to drive the desired response and you can support this effort in your bath-room by painting your walls in a shade that appeals to and relaxes you.

But don’t stop there - add splashes of complimentary colors around the space from bath towels and soap dishes to the robe you’ll wear when you’re finally ready to leave your newfound paradise.

After a busy day, it’s nice to know there’s a relaxing retreat you can call your own and it’s just waiting for you.

But your new bathroom won’t create itself.

Get started on your bathroom renova-tion today and your bathroom oasis will be ready before you know it.
