boosting the clubfor over 50 years

When you look around the Peterborough Memorial Centre on any given game night, you’ll see some things that have become staples in this traditional rink. The rows of championship banners, the portrait of the queen that hangs at the south end of the arena, and those square corners that give the Petes a home ice advantage.

But, this story is about something else you will find throughout the building and have been able to find for over 50 years. That is the Petes Booster Club.

They are usually seen sitting at their podiums in the lobby wearing Petes jerseys or hats, and most importantly a welcoming smile. These are the people who sell you your 50/50 tickets during game nights, but they do much more than just that.

The Booster Club was founded at the beginning of the 1967-1968 Peterborough Petes season, and was created as a result of a suggestion from the late Roger Neilson.

“When Roger Neilson was here, he asked four of us if we could start selling 50/50 tickets,” said Betty Nelson.

Nelson is the longest standing member of the Booster Club and is a native of Peterborough who has been coming to Peterborough Petes games since 1956. She said Roger Neilson had this discussion with herself and three other devoted fans about starting a 50/50 draw to help raise money to offset the cost of the players’ education.

“When Roger was here, he was an educator. The other teams in the league at the time only cared if their players would show up at the arena,” Nelson added. “They didn’t do anything else. Roger was the first to say it is mandatory - you’re in school full-time or you have a job.”

Blacks, which was a store located downtown Peterborough, was gracious enough to offer the players who weren’t in school jobs.

“But that only lasted a short time, because Roger said these players must be in school,” Nelson recounted “None of the other teams in the league were doing that for several years. But then other teams caught on, and so did the league.”

But since most of the players weren’t residents of Peterborough, they would have to pay to attend high school, college or university. This was what sparked the idea for a 50/50 draw.

In that first season, Nelson said she remembers one of the grand prizes that a fan took home.

“The first year, we thought one of our highest winners got $70,” she called. “We’ve worked hard at it ever since to build it up to what it is today.”

The great success of the Booster Club sparked some other opportunities for the group to make money. Fans asked for them to organize bus trips for road games.

“We had a few people who were arrested, for drinking and stuff,” laughed Nelson. “We had to be on top of that, but it worked out really well once we got the wrinkles out.”

In the early days of the Booster Club, Nelson would also purchase merchandise for fans that the club would sell on top of 50/50. She ran that until the team built a store and took over those responsibilities. Now when

you purchase your 50/50 tickets, they are printed through a machine which randomly gives you numbers. The Booster Club recalls the early days of selling 50/50.

“When we had those old tickets, we would have to go to city hall and get the license, then they would take the tickets home and sort them into separate piles of three because nobody wanted three consecutive numbers,” explained Booster Club member Lynda Johnson.

Johnson has been a member of the Booster Club for 18 years. She said this would take them days to do this work for the fan, but added that the new system makes things so much easier and allows for them to make more of a profit.

Jennifer Moore and her husband, Gord, are also members of the Booster Club. Moore said in the start, while her husband was working with the club, she was working in the accounting department at Fleming College. She came up with the idea to create a spreadsheet to help with the counting system. She explained that the club only has a short time to count all their money and separate it. After a while, once she retired, Moore eventually ended up becoming a member of the Booster Club herself.

With the growing success of the Booster Club, they’ve been able to purchase several things for the team. When the Petes hosted the 1996 Memorial

Cup, the Booster Club purchased matching jackets, shirts and pants for the players so they would look sharp when coming in and leaving the arena.

“We also put Wi-Fi on the Petes bus, we bought weight equipment in 2012, and computer equipment for the study room,” said Nelson.

There were a number of things the club has purchased for the Petes, but Nelson added that in recent years they have donated to the team’s mental health coaching.

Nelson, Moore and Johnson all feel that there are several reasons the club has lasted as long as it has.

“Besides the opportunity to win some money, I find people make comments about the fact that they feel they are helping support the club by doing this. We hear that all the time. They really want to support us,” noted Moore.Nelson felt the success also comes from having a strong group of sellers.“Our core sellers have always been very committed. We are there, we’re reliable, and people know where we are and what we do.”

Johnson added to that saying, “I am not bragging, but I think it is because of the people who run it. We never miss a night. They can always count on us to be there.”
