Identifying Parts of the Start Screen

1. Account button provides:a. Change account pictureb. Lock – secures access, requires a password to regain accessc. Sign outd. Switch account

2. Power button provides:a. Shut downb. Restart

3. Search: When touched it opens the search box and onscreen keyboard. A search can be limited to settings or files, or the search can be set for everywhere on the device.

4. Tiles: Tiles are shortcuts to applications. Tapping a tile will open the application. Desktop apps such as the Office 2013 apps will open on the desktop. Apps written for the Metro environment will open in the Metro screen.

5. Desktop Tile: Tapping this tile opens the desktop environment.

6. All apps: Drag the Start screen slightly to the left to unhide the All apps button. Tap the button to reveal all the applications. There are several screens of applications. Swipe side to side to see all the screens.

7. Charms: Hidden from view on the right. Swipe from outside the screen on the right toward the left. The Charms appear. Charms are available in all applications in both the desktop and Metro views.

a. Search: This is the same search tool identified in number 3 above.

b. Share: Requires a Microsoft account.

c. Start: Tapping this button opens the Start screen.

d. Devices: Works with Metro Apps.

e. Settings: Provides access to the wifi and volume features also found in the system tray of the desktop window.

Working with Tiles: The App Command Bar

To make any changes to the tiles and the Start screen, use the App Command Bar.

1. To rearrange the tiles and name the tile groups:

a. Tap and hold a tile until the blue App Command Bar appears at the bottom. The tapped tile will have a check in the upper right corner.

b. Tap the screen background to turn off the check.

c. Tap and drag the tiles to arrange them.

d. Tap the Name group box and rename the group.

e. Tap the screen background to exit the App Command Bar

2. Apps can be pinned to the Start screen where they become tiles. Tiles can be unpinned from the Start screen. Apps can be uninstalled and the tiles resized.

To unpin a tile:a. Tap and hold a tile until the blue App Command Bar appears at the bottom.

The tapped tile will have a check in the upper right corner.

b. Tap the Unpin from Start command

To pin a tile to the desktop taskbar:a. Tap and hold a tile until the blue App Command Bar appears at the bottom.

The tapped tile will have a check in the upper right corner.

b. Tap the Pin to taskbar command

To uninstall an app:a. Tap and hold a tile until the blue App Command Bar appears at the bottom.

The tapped tile will have a check in the upper right corner.

b. Tap the Uninstall command.

To resize a tile(s):a. Tap and hold a tile until the blue App Command Bar appears at the bottom.

The tapped tile will have a check in the upper right corner. To resize multiple tiles, tap each one.

b. Tap the Resize command and select the size from the menu.

3. Some tiles are live tiles. Live tiles display real-time information. The weather app is an example of a live tile. When the App Command Bar appears for a live tile, the command to turn on/off appears.

To turn a live tile on or off:a. Tap and hold a live tile until the blue App Command Bar appears at the bottom.

b. Tap the Turn live tile off/on command.

4. Apps can be pinned to the Start screen where they become tiles.

To pin an app:a. Tap the All apps command on the Start

screen or swipe upward from the center of the screen to view the apps.

b. Tap and hold the app until the App Command Bar appears.

c. Tap the Pin to Start command.

Navigating by Touch – Using Swipes

1. Left edge swipe: Use this swipe to cycle to the next app when multiple apps are open.

Press on the left frame of the display screen and swipe into the display area until the next app appears.

2. Left edge swipe in and out: Use this swipe to select an app from the Switcher. The Switcher displays all apps that are open.

Press on the left frame of the display area and swipe into the display area until the next app appears. Reverse direction and finish the swipe back off-screen.

3. Bottom edge or top edge swipe: Use either of these swipes on the display screen of an app to reveal the app commands. Repeating the swipe will hide the commands.

Press on the frame outside the display area and swipe into the display area. Swipe again to hide the commands. (Tapping the display area will also hide the commands.)

4. Right edge swipe: This swipe reveals the Charms.

The Charms are identified in the first section of this document.

5. Top edge swipe to the bottom edge: Use this swipe with open apps to close the app.7

With the app displayed press outside the display area at the top and swipe to the frame outside the bottom of the display area. During the swipe, the display area will become smaller and disappear completely at the end of the swipe.

Multitasking using the Snap Feature

The snap feature provides views of more than one active app at the same time. The snap bar adjusts to size the display.

1. Open an app. 2. Return to the Start screen.3. Open another app. One app is displayed on the screen.4. Use the Left edge swipe in and out to reveal the Switcher.

5. Drag the other app into the left side of the display and pause.

6. The snap bar appears. Release the app. The app expands to fill the left half of the display.

7. Drag the snap bar to change the size of the displays.

8. To return to a single display, drag the snap bar either to the left or right until only one app remains on the screen.

Returning to the Start Screen from the DesktopFrom the desktop, there are several ways to return to the Start screen.

1. Tap the Start command in the left corner of the task bar; or

2. Swipe to reveal the Charms and tap the Start command; or
