A few weeks ago one of the top contenders in the 2016 U.S. presidential field was asked by a news reporter if the candidate had ever asked God for forgive- ness of some of his actions. e candidate responded, “I am not sure I have. I just go on and try to do a better job from there. I don’t think so. I think if I do something wrong, I think, I just try and make it right. I don’t bring God into that picture. I don’t.” Questions concerning the role of personal faith in a respective candidate’s life seem to emerge in presidential elec- tion years. Whatever the moti- vation behind these questions, the candidate’s answer illus- trates a basic misunderstand- ing of meaning and importance of genuine forgiveness. We all stand in need of forgiveness. We have all offended other Minister’s Corner persons. Moreover, we have all offended the Holy God who created us and His Holy stan- dards. Because this is so, God must be brought into the pic- ture. e Bible states that the wrongs, offenses, missteps and mistakes we commit are called “sin.” And we are all sin- ners (Romans 3:23). We need forgiveness from our family, friends, neighbors and even folks we don’t really know well because of the sins we commit against them and ourselves. Even more, we need God’s for- giveness for the sins we have committed against Him. Jesus Christ came to earth in order to make the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. He came that it might be possible for God to forgive us now and forever through Christ’s finished work. It is not about our trying harder or doing better in order to get right with God (Ephesians 2:8- 9). Since we are sinners, the only One who is without sin could make right that which we could never could correct our- selves (2 Corinthians 5:21).
