Principal’s message With half the term completed already, it is astonishing

to look back at what we have already achieved thus far.

I thank the staff and students who have diligently

applied themselves to a new academic year and

encourage all to maintain the energy for the remainder

of the term

SPC Meeting Last week I attended a Secondary Principals’ Council

meeting at Yanco Agricultural High School. This event is

held once per term and is an excellent opportunity for

secondary principals in the Riverina to come together to

discuss issues affecting our local area. We have experts

in the field to discuss a range of issues, we also provide

local representatives to sit on reference groups in Sydney

to provide a rural voice.

We were very fortunate to have Chris Presland, the

president of the NSW Secondary Principals’ Council,

attend and present us with an executive perspective in

current and emerging issues across New South Wales.

Visitors to the School When visiting the school it is important that all people

sign in. If you are working in the canteen, there is a

record keeping process in place, therefore you needn’t

come to the front office, otherwise please come via the

front office and sign our Visitor Register. The

Department of Education expects us to have a register of

all people in the school and it is a simple means of

ensuring the safety and wellbeing of us all.

School Photos Our annual school photos will be taken on Friday 15th

March. Please look out for photo envelopes. They have

been given to students to take home. Spare envelopes

may be collected from the office. For those wanting

family photos, an extra envelope can also be collected

from the office.

Please note: the school does not collect the photo

money, it is brought to school on the day of the photos

in the provided envelope and handed directly to the

photographers when the photos are taken.

Bus Lane A reminder to all students and parents that the yellow

marked bus zone at the front of the school is a pedestrian

free zone during bus times. This is for the safety of all as

it can be quite chaotic, especially in the afternoons. I do

not want to see any of our school community injured in

traffic, nor do I want to place any of our relatively

inexperienced senior student drivers in a situation where

people are randomly entering traffic from behind parked

buses. Pedestrians arerequested to walk around the

yellow painted zone.

Year 11 Assessment Information

Evening Thank you to those families who attended the Year 11

assessment information evening in the library on the 18th

February. I hope this session proved to be informative

and has increased the collective knowledge of the

procedures mandated by the NSW Educational

Standards Authority that we are obliged to follow. If you

were unable to attend this event, please take some time

to go through the handbook with your child and make

sure that you understand the content. If there are any

questions, please contact the school.

Clothing The weather seems as though it is just starting to turn. I

would encourage you to label all school uniform items.

They should be clearly marked with the student’s name.

One of the consequences of a uniform is that everyone’s

clothing garments look the same and returning lost

property to the correct owner is impossible without

correct identification. Autumn and spring are notorious

for lost articles as jumpers are discarded after the early

morning chill.

Junior Girls Uniform Survey The P+C are currently seeking student feedback on proposed changes to the junior girls’ school uniform. Please use your student voice and vote at the link provided ASAP! Thanks! https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/53W952Z

TAS/PDHPE Report Year 7 Technology Mandatory Classes taught by Miss McDonnell have been busy down at the Ag Farm this week and have just planted a range of vegetables including cauliflower, broccoli, spinach, silver beat and cabbage. Students have also had some practical lessons in the Hospitality Kitchens and made some passion fruit pikelets and tomato bruschetta to develop their understanding of Paddock to Plate processes.

Textiles In the Textiles room, Miss Bond’s Year 7 students have been learning how to process wool fibres into felt using both wet and dry felting techniques. They have also spent some time in the computer room completing a research and technology task on wool. This task is designed to incorporate ICT computer skills using PowerPoint and will help students utilise this software in other areas as well.

Year 7 PDHPE Students have been creating a visual representation of their own Personal Profiles in theory lessons and are learning fundamental movement skills in practical lessons.

Year 8 STEM classes have been testing out their marble runs this week with students working in teams to problem solve and create a working model.

Science/Vis Arts/Careers Report Visual Arts

Year 8 Visual Arts are currently working through a unit of work focusing on

portraiture. Inspired by Cubist artists, such as Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque,

students are creating their own cubist portrait. They are considering the idea of

viewing the face from multiple angles and displaying this in one seamless image.

Students are also required to work with a variety of mediums, including ink,

watercolour, charcoal and pencil.

Science

Year 12 Chemistry boys

Darcy at Physics residential school

Year 7 Students have settled in well and they are on a steep learning curve, developing their scientific skills and knowledge of lab safety. All have had their first experiment using a Bunsen burner, without injuries, which is always good! They will have their first in class assessment task on Thursday 21st March, which is a practical test. Here they will demonstrate the lab safety and scientific skills that we have been covering in class.

Year 8

Year 8 Science students have been conducting experiments on sedimentation, erosion and deposition using large stream trays to simulate the movement of particles over the landscape.

Students have been given the initial information sheet regarding their upcoming excursion to Warrnambool and the south coast of Victoria from Wed 3rd to Fri 5th April. The final cost is yet to be finalised but we would appreciate a $100 deposit paid by Friday 15th March. Payment can be made to the front office or by using the 'Make a Payment' link on BHS website. More information and permission note will be sent home with students soon.

Stage 5

Stage 5 are covering content about our human body systems and how they are controlled by the nervous and endocrine systems. They recently conducted a sensitivity investigation and enjoyed this experiment (mostly because they were required to press toothpicks into their partner’s skin!). This is quite a large topic that also covers the reproductive & immune systems, disease and genetic technologies. Their first assessment will not be due until early next term and will be a research task.

Year 11 All year 11 courses are well underway and students are busy engaging with their courses. Chemistry and Biology students have their first assessment tasks later this term. Investigating Science have their first task early next term. Miss Dennis and Darcy Martin, along with the rest of her Year 11 Physics class are in Sydney this week attending their residential school and are very busy completing some mandatory practicals. More information will be included in next newsletter.

Year 12 The Year 12 students are nearly half way through their

courses and should be working solidly on developing

summaries of the content covered already. Investigating

Science students are frantically trying to complete their

first assessment task, which is due next Fri (15th March).

The Biology students are ploughing through their theory

and have their first task due at the end of this term. The

Chemistry students are also in Sydney at their Aurora

residential school. They are enjoying the opportunity to

conduct experiments in university laboratories. More

detailed information about their experience will be

included in the next newsletter.

Our Year 7 students have been settling in well and

learning about new content, different learning styles and

ways of structuring information. In HSIE, the students

have been learning geographical skills to help them

navigate their way in life. They have also been looking at

the topic ‘liveability’ and thinking about the resources

and services that are available in different communities.

Practical Support for High School

Certificate Examinations

Information for Students and Parents

Any HSC student with a disability recognised in the

Commonwealth Disability Standards for Education 2005

can apply for disability provisions.

The definition of ‘disability’ in the Disability

Discrimination Act 1992 includes: physical intellectual

psychiatric sensory neurological, and learning

disabilities, as well as physical disfigurement, and the

presence in the body of disease-causing organisms.

Disability provisions apply only where the disability

needs a practical arrangement to reduce disadvantage in

an exam situation. Disability provisions also apply to

temporary and emergency-related disabilities such as

where a student breaks their writing arm a week before

an examination. Students who become ill during an

examination period may be eligible to make an

illness/misadventure application rather than a disability

provisions application.

If you believe your child would benefit from disability

provisions for the HSC please contact Mrs Georgia

Snowdon or Ms Carmen Batty to discuss. Applications

need to be completed before the end of term.

Fancy Sugar with That?

Can you imagine eating 13 teaspoons straight out of the sugar bowl? l know that seems crazy, but that is what you are doing when you drink a 600ml flavored DARE Iced Coffee Mocha! A small Prima juice box will give your child over 4 teaspoons of added sugar! In Australia 1 in 4 children and 1 in 2 adults overweight and/or obese. We also have high rates of tooth decay in Loddon and Gannawarra. Removing sugary drinks from your regular diet can help reduce the risk of obesity and tooth decay. To cut your added sugar intake from drinks:

Make water your drink of choice and save the sweet stuff as a treat.

Check nutrition labels: every 4g of sugar = approximately 1 teaspoon of sugar.

Aim for less than 6 teaspoons of added sugar a day for females and less than 9 teaspoons of added sugar for males per day .

Here’s the scoop on the number of sugar-loaded teaspoons in some popular drinks. Shocked by how they stack up? We are, too!

Be a Body Positive Role Model

Parents and carers are the biggest influence on a young person’s body image. The best way

to encourage and support a positive body image in our children we need to lead by example.

Ways to help your young person to have positive body image include:

Make healthy eating and physical activity part of your everyday family life, and avoid fad diets – this will help your child find the right balance

Appreciate your own body for what it can do, not just how it looks Be proud of things about yourself that aren’t related to how you look. Things like having

a sense of humour, trying hard, being caring or being helpful – you can point out these qualities in yourself and your child

Accept and value people no matter how they look. Do not comment on how people look.

Talk about social media –a lot of what is on social media is to sell products. Social media can be edited to make people look a certain way.

If you would like more information about supporting your young person to have a positive body image, NDCH are hosting a Body Confident Children and Teens session with The Butterfly Foundation.

For further information please contact NDCH on 03) 54 510 200.
