Introduction Since its first edition fifty-six years ago in Strasbourg (1964), the IUPAC Symposium on Photochemistry has served as the major scientific forum for the international photochemical community. Over the decades, the Symposium has attracted a solid and growing number of delegates from North America, Asia, and Europe, with a smaller but sustained participation from Australia and New Zealand, Africa and Latin America. The global appeal of this meeting series fulfills the aspirations of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (www.iupac.org/) to promote chemistry for the benefit of all of mankind. The biannual IUPAC symposium on Photochemistry brings together global experts from wide range of scientific areas and strongly encourages the participation of a diverse group of senior and young scientists, postdocs and students. The previous edition in Dublin, 2018, attracted 525 participants, a number that we expect to surpass in Amsterdam.

The scientific scope of the Symposium spans from the fundamentals of photochemistry to areas of unique potential impact in the near future: solar energy conversion, light in a circular economy, light-controlled materials, imaging and sensing at the nanoscale, photomedicine, and many others. Recent increases in the efficiency of light sources and conversion pathways for solar energy have driven a renaissance in photochemical reactions in flow, with the impact already being felt in pharmaceutical and materials industries. The Symposium will also cover advanced spectroscopic methods with state-of-the-art time and spatial resolution and modern theoretical and computational methods providing novel insights into the fundamentals of light-matter interaction. These fundamental advances open new avenues for the photochemistry of the future.

Location: why Amsterdam?

Let us welcome you to Amsterdam, a place of many inspiring and surprising faces. No other city mixes cosmopolitan style and relaxed atmosphere quite like Amsterdam, where our hospitable nature attracts an excitingly diverse population. We invite you to join us and make our metropolis your own during your stay.

Amsterdam is an ideal conference destination, hosting hundreds of world-class congresses, conventions, events and trade fairs each year. Offering quality facilities, venues and service providers, the city is a favourite for meeting planners and delegates alike and, as such, is the proud host of numerous innovative conventions.

There’s a lot to experience for visitors, too: Amsterdam is packed with cultural, historical and architectural delights – from museums and attractions to restaurants, cafés, shopping and nightlife. The city’s cultural scene is bustling, ensuring visitors can have both a memorable meeting and great experiences after business hours. And transport is straight-forward and convenient, whether it’s by taxi, train, tram, metro, bus, ferry, bike or on foot, so journeys are short, pleasant and enlightening for guests from the Netherlands or beyond.

Home to some of the world’s most acclaimed works of art, with more canals than Venice, more bridges than Paris and nearly 7,000 monumental buildings, our compact floating city offers a variety of historical and cultural treasures. It’s no wonder Amsterdam’s historic canal ring has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Amsterdam is a national and international gateway. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is considered one of the best in the world and is just 20 minutes from the city centre. Amsterdam’s compact city centre has an outstanding public transport service and therefore most facilities and sights are within walking distance of each other.

Welcome to Amsterdam!
