Love Feast - Palm Sunday
April 5 at 11:00 AM
Remember Together
T wice a year we come together at Love Feast as brothers and sisters in
Christ to reflect on our faith journey, wash each other’s feet, eat a shared
meal, and remember Christ’s sacrifice for us by breaking bread and sharing
the cup. These simple, meaningful acts draw us closer to Jesus and one
another. This year’s virtual Love Feast & Communion is a unique opportunity
to experience this meaningful time in a new way. Share more intimately this
experience with those within your home. Reflect on the specialness of Love
Feast held in this different setting. You are invited to share photos with the
church from your Love Feast meal and feet/hand washing experience by
emailing them to [email protected] after the service. Photos will
be shared during our next worship service.

Running to the Need
I n the mid Fourth Century the pagan Roman
emperor, Julian, wrote a letter to a pagan
priest in Galatia. In the middle of widespread
plagues and sickness Julian wonders why “the
impious Galilaeans (Christians) support not only
their own poor but ours as well, all men see that
our people lack aid from us.” When people were
sick and dying, with many Romans leaving the
cities to escape the plagues, followers of the
Galilean, Jesus, were staying in the cities to
serve the poor and sick in need.
Move forward many centuries to the middle of the
20th Century. War had devastated Europe in the
wake of WW II. Another group of Jesus followers
led by a man named Dan West, from the Church
of the Brethren, began shipping heifers over to
Europe to help alleviate the hunger and poverty
of those impacted by this man-made disaster.
Seagoing Cowboys began by taking three heifers
named “Faith,” “Hope,” and “Charity” across the
ocean. This effort would become Heifer Project
International.
History is filled with instances of Jesus-people
stepping up during times of crisis whether
sickness, war or famine. Jesus, who healed the
sick, gave sight to the blind, made the lame to
walk, and fed the hungry, called us to love and
serve the hurting.
The church has been presented with a new
opportunity to love and minister to the needs of
those impacted by a crisis. For some that is
dealing with sickness from this new virus. For
many others it may mean dealing with the
economic and financial ramifications from the
widespread shut-downs. Still for others it may be
dealing with the anxiety, fear and isolation felt.
We are part of another way of living that calls us
not to hunker down in fear, or run for the hills of
safety, but to serve in the midst of these trials. I
have been blown away by the response of the
Spring Creek family in the last few weeks. People
wanting to know, even while we are cooperating
with global efforts to stem the tide of this virus,
“What can I do?”
May we continue to serve Jesus and our
neighbors with Faith, Hope and Charity (Love).
May our way of responding point towards Jesus,
so that even the pagans wonder why the Galileans
love “their own poor but ours as well.” May we see
those who are hurting and sick and run to the
need. “To the
glory of God
and our
neighbors'
good.”
Blessings,
Pastor Adam

Online Giving Dearest Spring Creek members and friends,
We are indeed living in unprecedented times as we learn to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, our God is a good and loving God who wants what’s best for his children. Already, we have found and continue to develop alternate ways to “gather” for Bible Studies, meetings and worship. We can be very thankful for our members who have exceptional technical skills that have been so beneficial to our ability to stay connected to one another.
Finance and Stewardship continues to monitor our situation very closely. We have taken immediate steps to eliminate all nonessential spending and expenses for the foreseeable future. Also, we will be considering ways to continue to support our staff and membership during these times. Unfortunately, we cannot gather and give our regular offerings just by dropping them in the offering plates. Nevertheless, we would strongly encourage each of you to remain faithful in your regular giving. Many people will be using the easy online giving platform we have established (see below this article for the link). Others have added the church to their online banking list and will be forwarding several weeks’ worth of giving to the church. Still others will be using the regular mail to send in their offerings. Also, we are very thankful to our promissory note holders, many of whom have agreed to temporarily suspend payments on the principal they loaned the church! Regular offerings are essential in order to maintain our ongoing efforts to support all of our ministries and outreach.
Can we count on your continued support as together we walk through this valley?
May God bless you and keep you safe, Paul Pintarch, F&S Chair

THE IDEAL OF PEACE
T he first principle laid down by the founders of the
Church of the Brethren in 1708 was the doctrine
of peace. When one remembers that all their lives
they had experienced nothing but wars, conflicts, force and compulsion, there is no wonder that, as
they read their New Testaments, they were
impressed by the gospel of peace.
Peace meant three things for the Brethren.
(1) It is opposed to war, which always means killing folks. The whole spirit of war is against everything
for which Jesus stands. There is nothing about war
that is Christ-like. There never was a war that was
not caused by selfishness and hate; and, of course, there can be no war without killing human beings.
Our church fathers had a clear, prophetic insight into
the real teachings of Jesus. The Bible not only
teaches, “thou shalt not kill,” but Jesus went the second mile, and taught that we should love our
enemies, redeem them, and summed up the whole
of religion in love to our Father God, and love to our
neighbor as ourselves. His own actions are in perfect harmony with these teachings.
(2) Peace also meant for our church fathers—“There
shall be no force in religion.” Religion was a free act of faith on the part of the individual, hence he should
not be compelled by forces from without to fit into
any ecclesiastical system to which his conscience
objected. In all cases of conversion and baptism in the New Testament, the convert was free to exercise
his own will - to follow the light from within, and not
compelled by autocratic institutions from without.
Religion must be a free act of faith. Baptism in the New Testament was always associated with such a
free act of faith. There was no compulsion, Our
founders came out of a background of persecution.
They could not read and honor their Bibles and still comply with the worldly, luxurious, formal, almost
pagan worship of the state church. Yet they were
compelled to do so, or be persecuted and driven
from place to place. Baptism was to be for those who had faith, not for helpless infants who were
forced against their wills to fit into ecclesiastical
organizations. In 1718 the soldiers of Arfeldt came
to Schwarzenau and tore the babies out of their
mother’s arms, took them to Arfeldt and sprinkled them. This was force in religion, as well as the
persecution which a year later drove them out of
Germany to Holland.
(3) Peace also meant no litigation in pagan courts. “Better suffer wrong than do wrong” was a
motto among them. They had found by
experience that pagan courts were unjust, that
the man of wealth and influence was favored, and the poor innocent man was deprived of his rights
and property and was left deeper in debt than
before. They learned at the foot of the cross that
Christians must be prepared to suffer wrong, and rejoice in it. They had suffered all their lives in the
midst of people who pretended to be Christians,
but were pagans in practice. But they were
sustained by that unfaltering faith in their Heavenly Father who knows all, and who will
reward one for even a cup of cold water given in
his name; thus how much more will he bless
those who for the sake of peace suffer wrong rather than use force, or pagan courts, for any
selfish purpose. Only when the church granted
permission, believing that the cause was
eminently just and worthy, was a brother allowed to go to courts of law.
Peace was the first principle laid down by the
Brethren. It is a big word. The Hebrew word for
peace is shalom. This means more than we
usually mean by peace. We often speak of peace where there is only armistice - or a temporary
suspension of hostilities. But the word shalom
means “blessed welfare”; it is the very nature of
God’s perfect harmony with himself.
There are three kinds of peace in the Bible.
(1) We should make our peace with God. This
means faith, repentance, and reconciliation.
(2) Then the “peace of God” is shed abroad in our hearts, and all conflicts within cease, and we are
in tune with ourselves and with him.
(3) We should live at peace with everyone, create
community through redemptive love, and be peacemakers, that we may become children of
God. These ideals were taught as basic for the
Christian life. (from “Ideals of the Church of the Brethren” by the late D.W. Kurtz, educator, leader and pastor in the Church of the Brethren.)

Sewing Face Masks for Londonderry Village
J eff Shireman, the CEO of Londonderry Village, has communicated that the health care staff is in great need of masks as they are unable to access their usual supplies due to the pandemic and
global shortage of medical equipment and supplies. While it would certainly be preferable to have the normal medical masks, Jeff is asking anyone that can sew, and has extra material at home, to make and donate masks. Please pass this along to any individuals you think could help. Londonderry Village will appreciate your help to meet this emergency need.
Please wash the material in HOT water prior to sewing face masks. Londonderry Village will be laundering the masks daily in HOT water. Sewing Directions: Attached HERE are directions for making a mask - adult size, please. Also, obviously the mask doesn't have to be made with only a "pretty print" - any material is fine. See another instructional PDF HERE. And see a YouTube sewing tutorial HERE. The best choices for materials for DIY masks are cotton t-shirts, pillowcases, or other cotton materials (based on test data). These materials filter out approximately 50% of 0.2 micron particles, similar in size to the coronavirus. They are also as easy to breathe through as surgical masks, which makes them more comfortable enough to wear for several hours. Doubling the layers of material for your DIY mask gives a very small increase in filtration effectiveness, but makes the mask much more difficult to breathe through.
You can drop off masks at Spring Creek Church of the Brethren: Place masks in a clean, sealed plastic bag and put them in the outside plastic bin that is to the left of the church's three glass front doors. Then please text or email Sandy Pintarch, (717-991-9492, [email protected]), and let Sandy know how many masks you dropped off. Pick-up of the masks will be arranged after enough are accumulated. (Currently, no drop-offs can happen at The Village by non-residents.) However, any Londonderry Village residents who make masks can drop them off using their badge at the main LV entrance and placing their masks outside of Chaplain Mary Eller's office door if she is not there.
Or masks can be boxed and mailed to: Jennifer Ginder RN/NHA VP of Health Services Londonderry Village 1200 Grubb Road Palmyra, PA 17078 If you have any questions you can call Sandy Pintarch at (717) 991-9492. Thanks!
Spring Creek Highlighted in Church of the Brethren Newsline:
“Spring Creek Church of the Brethren in Hershey, Pa., received $5,000 to replace a heating system for its Parsonage Ministry. The church has raised $4,750 of the $9,750 replacement cost of a new energy efficient natural gas heating system. For 11 years, the congregation has used its former parsonage as a place for people to stay when family members are receiving care at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, at no cost. The ministry serves people who must travel more than 50 miles to be with loved ones during a medical crisis but who cannot afford to stay in a hotel. Since its beginning, the ministry has helped more than 1,200 guests save more than $1,800,000 in lodging costs.” (http://www.brethren.org/news/2020/brethren-faith-in-action-grants.html)
We are very thankful that so far there have
been no reported cases of COVID-19 on the
campus at Londonderry Village, and we pray that
the residents and the staff remain healthy!

O ver the last three years, the Little Black
Dress Soiree has grown considerably, in
both size and popularity. With 200 of the area's
professional and millennial leaders expected to
attend, our event goal is to raise important funds
and awareness of our mission and the work we
are doing in the community to serve families
experiencing homelessness. This fun networking
style event allows guests to enjoy food and
fashion while having fun with friends, family and
colleagues. We offer a silent auction with
experiences and items for attendees to bid on.
Local designer, Amma Jo, will have a pop-up
boutique with many of her items available to
purchase. To register for the Little Black Dress
Soiree, click HERE or go to: www.bha-pa.org.
Sponsorship opportunities are available. For

Operation Christmas Child
O ur collections are underway for 2020. Thank you to everyone who donated soap
and washcloths. It’s amazing how often I hear how having their own washcloth means so much to kids who have so little. But the most important thing they receive is an opportunity to know how much Jesus loves them. Thank you for your commitment to spreading the Good News to boys and girls around the world.
For April our collection item is toothbrushes. Once we are able to return to church, items may be placed in the OCC basket in the donation room.
Blessings, Sue Albright

E aster is the most joyous Christian holy day ... except when it’s not. What do we do when our mood isn’t
what we think it “should” be? The kids are sugared up, we’re juggling family gatherings (and maybe conflicts), our everyday challenges remain, and festive hymns — however rousing — fail to lift our spirits. We wonder, “What’s wrong with me, that I can’t seem to find Easter?” Been there, done that. And it’s okay. You’re okay.
Jesus’ resurrection doesn’t scoop us out of our troubles, but the death-defying Christ walks through them beside us, on our own Emmaus road (Luke 24). We aren’t alone. When we can’t find Easter, Easter somehow finds us — if not on this designated Sunday, perhaps two days from now, or next week or mid-May. Watch for it; keep your heart open. Christ is risen indeed — and you shall be too.
—Heidi Mann
