Our Church Safety and SecurityA prudent man foresees the diffi culties ahead and prepares for them;

the simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.

PROVERBS 22:3

There has been a confi rmed increase in crimes against church

ministries in recent years. Tragically, dangers such as arson, vandalism,

assault or threats of assault, breaking and entering and theft have become

more common occurrences in churches. After a church shooting in

Knoxville, TN, in 2008, a survey of Christian churches found that 75

percent had no security or emergency plans. Churches can thus become

“soft targets” that are easily accessible places with little or no security.

At Trinity, we believe that ministering to families, children, youth

and vulnerable adults is a vital part of our mission. It’s also important

for us to deliberately focus on our neighbors by serving with and being

served in our community. Consequently the safety and security practices we uphold play a major role on our ministry to

affi rm people in their call to participate in this body of Christ. Also our safety and security policies are good practices to

help staff and volunteers avoid awkward or diffi cult circumstances, help prevent misunderstandings and protect all those

who enter our doors.

The following measures are some of the ways we implement safety and security for God’s people as well as to affi rm

our staff and volunteers in the roles they serve:

v We view safety as a stewardship matter – We believe that in protecting the people in our church and school while

securing our property and facilities is excellent stewardship and demonstrates compassion.

v We have a written safety and security plan – Our Emergency Preparedness Plan is designed to provide written

procedures to be followed by staff, faculty and other trained individuals in the event of a threat or emergency.

v Security System – We recently upgraded our security system that implemented additional security measures. Two

of these measures include:

• An improved security alarm system to protect our most valuable assets: God’s people, electronics, fi les, etc.

• A keyless entry card for all staff and leaders. This measure will assist in the extra protection for our children,

members and staff as well as protection of loss. We will be implementing this before the end of March. Each

approved individual with a card will have their name and department along with their photo on the card. For

additional questions regarding the keyless entry cards, please contact Director of Finance, Sue Holeman, at

713.229.2956.

v Some Additional Measures – There are also numerous measures we take in order to secure the safety for all. Some

of these include:

• For all staff we do a security background check prior to hiring.

• For all volunteers working with children we do a security background check prior to serving.

• We have a Parish & School nurse on staff to help with the special health or physical needs of people.

• We have sign-in procedures for our Education Center and have a Host and Hostess for our Trinity Church

building during business hours Monday through Friday for the safety of our school children. And on Saturday

mornings we have volunteers who answer the phones and greet guests.

• We comply with all safety codes. These codes determine how doors are open, how many feet from a doorway

to exterior entrance for children during an escape, how many people can safely occupy a room and a myriad

of other safety issues.

v Trust God - Despite the increasing crimes against church ministries nationwide, we don’t need to be held captive

to fear. While we should do all we can to provide for the safety of the ministry and people we serve, we recognize

that our greatest protection and ultimate security is found in God!

At times these measures can be perceived to be consuming; however, they are there to provide care for those who

serve and those who are being served. Therefore, while we continue being servants for our Lord, we also must develop

the vigilance of Nehemiah.

Attention: RN’S, LVN’S, Nurse

Practitioners, Nursing AssistantsOur Foyer Display & Archives Coordinator, Ruth

Stoerkel, has asked Trinity’s nurses to provide items for the

Foyer Display during the month of May, 2011, to celebrate

National Nurses Week (May 6 -12) and especially for May

6th, National Nurses Day.

Julie Bertrand, RN, has been asked to coordinate

the display using varied equipment, supplies, emblems, certifi cations,

photos, uniforms, caps, fi gurines, plaques, or any “tools of the trade”

(sphygmomanometers, stethoscopes, scissors, thermometers, etc), We think this

would be an interesting addition to our display collections that have graced the

cabinet during the last several years.

PLEASE ASSIST IN MAKING THIS DISPLAY A SUCCESS! Contact

Julie for further information and what items you can loan for the National Nurses

Month display and/or if you can assist in arranging the display. Julie can be

reached at: (home) 281.498.5758; (work) 713.229.2928; or (email) jbertrand@

Don't Miss This —

Picture Updates NeededIn order to provide adequate

emergency care for our members during

worship services and other events we

have had pictures of individuals who

are certifi ed/trained in administering

CPR/AED and FIRST AID posted in

the ushers' room near the narthex. We

need to update the pictures. If you are

certifi ed/trained in these procedures

please contact Julie Bertrand, RN

(Parish/School Nurse) so that we can

arrange a time for your picture to be

taken. Our member, Joey Perry, has

graciously agreed to take our pictures.

The pictures will again be placed in the

ushers' room and we will also post them

in the gymnasium for our 931 and 11th hour services. Julie may be contacted at

(offi ce) 713.229.2928 or (home) 281.498.5758. Thank you for participating in

such a LIFE SAVING MINISTRY!

Trinity Resource

DirectoryThe Health Cabinet is in the

process of compiling a Resource

Directory for Trinity congregation. It

will inform our members of different

vocations and occupations of our

current members and referrals of

services used by our members. A

form will be available for members

who have privately owned businesses.

Also, space will be provided on the

form for any referral services that

members have used and trusted

such as plumbers, painters, dentists,

carpenters, etc. The forms will be

located in the narthex, foyer and at

the 931 and 11th hour services. The

directory will also be put on the Trinity

website. We hope this directory will

be benefi cial to all our members.

Struckmann Participates in Engineering CompetitionAndrew Struckmann (6th grade) participated in the HoustonWorks

Engineering Excellence Competition on February 12, 2011. On

his own, outside of school, Andrew designed and built a robot that

demonstrates perfect (basketball) shooting form and monitors players as

they shoot. The monitoring gives feedback to the player. To complete

this project, Andrew had to fi ll out an application with his idea (over 200

were submitted), write an essay (approx. 80 submitted) explaining his

idea, create a budget/materials list, make a drawing, assemble a tri-fold

display, and build the robot. Among 25 other students, he presented his

invention at the Houston Museum of Health and Medical Science on

Saturday (Feb. 11). For this presentation, he had to explain his idea and

answer questions for four judges (one judge at a time).

On February 19th, his project was judged at Duncan Hall on the

campus of Rice University. This is just one example of our Trinity

students using the gifts and talents the Lord has given them! A job

WELL DONE, Andrew!!!

alumni) has already surpassed one of her track and fi eld goals at the fi rst competition of the

year by setting a new school discus record for women with a throw of 112 ft. at the HCHS

Invitational meet with St. John’s and Incarnate Word Academy on February 11, 2011. Eight

days later on February 19 at the HCHS Dual meet with St. John’s, Amie shattered her own

record with a throw of 121 ft. 6 in. “I was shocked and so happy at the same time!” exclaims

Amie. With her record-breaking distance in discus and shot put record (34 ft. 4.25 in.) last

year as a freshman, Amie now holds both female throwing records at HCHS. Previously, the

school’s discus record (109 ft. in 2007) and shot put record (32 ft. 5.5 in. in 2008) were set by Jacqueline Helms.

“Amie is the most disciplined and coachable thrower I’ve worked with,” states Jason Shepherd, HCHS Assistant

Track & Field Coach and Bible teacher. “She has been training almost daily since October and is now beginning to see

results from her hard work. She still has a lot of work to do, which means she has the potential to throw much farther.”

Amie has been throwing shot put and discus for about six years. “I started throwing because I knew all my friends were

going out for track, and I wanted to participate, too,” remembers Amie. “I’m not a very good runner, so I decided the best

thing I could do was to throw. I picked it up quickly and enjoyed it, so I stuck with it.”

According to Coach Shepherd, Amie is one of the sweetest and most competitive girls he has ever coached. He

attributes Amie’s success to her drive and training regimen. “I practice every day after school, working on discus for an

hour and then shot put for 30 minutes, and then switching them the next day,” says Amie. “I also lift weights on Tuesday

and Thursday mornings before school.”

Amie also sets a goal of how far she wants to throw before every meet. “I always try my hardest to reach that distance,”

states Amie. “At the meet where I threw the record, my goal was to throw at least 110 feet, and luckily, I threw a little bit

farther.”

Amie’s throwing accomplishments this season soon will place her on the ESPN Rise Dyestat State Elite List, a listing

of all state high school athletes competing in track and fi eld events. “If she continues at her current pace, Amie will

probably rank on their national list,” comments Coach Shepherd.

When Amie is not throwing, she likes to spend time with her friends and family, as well as playing on the HCHS junior

varsity volleyball team this year. When she graduates, she is considering majoring in education or nursing at a college

where she can throw and hopefully, get a scholarship.

When asked what her goals are for the season, Amie quickly responded, “The State Championship!” With the distances

she has been producing so far, Coach Shepherd says that she is already there.

“Age-Proofi ng Your Brain”Since I am part of the aging population and occasionally “worry” about

my aging brain, I found this article most interesting. There will be two more

articles on this subject.

“Aging is inevitable; losing your mental acuity is not.” This is the

implication from the latest brain research that has discovered that the “choices

we make throughout our lifetime about work, play, diet, social interaction,

relaxation, and even spirituality have a signifi cant effect on our ability to

remain sharp well into old age.”

In 2009, the National Institutes of Health found that “while most older

people experience some cognitive decline as they age, nearly 1/3 don’t.

Researchers followed 2,509 older people (65 and older) for eight (8) years

and found the following:

• 30% MAINTAINED cognitive function

• 53% LOST SOME cognitive function

• 16% LOST LOTS OF cognitive function

According to this study, what sets these people apart are factors that can

be controlled. These will be discussed in another issue.

Research has found that while younger brains tend to be more agile than

older ones in certain respects, some of the most important mental functioning,

such as deductive reasoning, general knowledge, and vocabulary continue to expand as we age! The brain is proving to be

amazingly resilient, capable of compensating for the assaults of aging. NOW THAT’S A BOOST!

I’ll close this on what I fi nd as very helpful Dr. Paul Nussbaum from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine

says: “Your brain doesn’t know how old you are —and doesn’t care. It just wants to be in a stimulating environment, and

that’s something you can do at any age.”

Prayers and Promises by Pastor David Leeland

It was 1988 and I was fi nishing up a Mediterranean deployment as chaplain of USS MOUNT BAKER AE-34. I was

visiting the various work spaces seeing how the crew was doing when a 1st Class Petty Offi cer stopped me and asked if he

could see me privately later that night. I told him that I would be glad to visit with him and we agreed on 2100 (9 p.m.).

He came by my stateroom with a box tucked under his arm. I invited him to sit and asked him how he was doing.

His face became troubled and he asked me, “Chaplain, I know you’re Lutheran

and I’m Catholic, would you hear my confession and give me absolution anyway?”

I shared with him that we were just a couple of days away from Spain and we

could connect him with a priest there. He said, “No, it has to be you because you

know me.” And I said, “Tell me what’s on your mind.” He poured out his heart

and I shared several Scriptures with him. One of them was from Psalm 103:

10 He does not deal with us according to our sins,

nor repay us according to our iniquities.11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,

so great is His steadfast love toward those who fear Him;12 as far as the east is from the west,

so far does He remove our transgressions from us.13 As a father shows compassion to his children,

so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear Him.

How wonderful it is to know that the LORD deals with us not from judgment and punishment, He laid all of it on

Jesus, but from His mercy and grace in Christ.

All this time, the box stayed closed. I actually thought he was done when he said to me, “Chaplain, there’s one more

thing.” He began to open the box, “I bought this for my family back in Italy, and I’ve been carrying it with me for half

the cruise. Would you bless this for me?” He brought out a beautiful mahogany Crucifi x, intricately carved and lovingly

shaped. I asked him why he bought it and why he wanted it blessed. He said, “We’ll be home in just a few days and I

want a new start with my wife and family. I want this cross hung prominently on our family room wall in a place where

we will all see it every day because I want God to bless us with the love of Jesus every day.” I asked him if he wanted

God to make him a new man to lead his family in a new way.” He said, “That’s why I came to see you tonight.” And we

prayed some more.

Easter’s all about new life! First, with the new life of Christ Jesus risen from the dead and then with all of us given

new life in Christ through our baptisms. Like the Petty Offi cer who visited me one night at the end of a deployment, we

all can want and have a fresh start in Christ. May the power of Christ’s resurrection be with us all to strengthen us in His

presence and peace in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Concordia University Texas Names Rev. Dr.

Jerry Kieschnick Presidential Ambassador for Mission

AdvancementAUSTIN, Texas—Concordia University Texas announced that Rev. Dr. Jerry

Kieschnick, President Emeritus of The Lutheran Church -- Missouri Synod, has been named

to the newly created position of Presidential Ambassador for Mission Advancement. Dr.

Kieschnick began his role on March 1.

“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Kieschnick into the Concordia family,” Dr. Tom

Cedel, president of Concordia University Texas, said. “Jerry brings a new level of energy

and expertise to the University; he also brings a valuable national—and global—perspective

on our mission. He is a gifted leader who bridges denominational boundaries.”

Kieschnick has experience in multiple facets of ministry and mission and brings an

expanded vision for outreach. In his new role, Kieschnick will nurture and expand existing

relationships with congregations, organizations, foundations and individuals to support

Concordia in its mission of developing Christian leaders while conducting necessary

outreach to foster new relationships for the advancement of the University.

“The Lord has given me gifts and experiences to use in the cause for Christ,” Kieschnick said. “Coming to Concordia

provides opportunity to think creatively and act strategically, infl uencing younger generations with the Gospel of Christ.

I look forward to becoming an integral part of Concordia’s ministry and working with various constituents to further the

University’s mission of developing Christian leaders.”

As the 12th president of the LCMS for more than 10 years, Kieschnick helped lead the Lutheran Church into the 21st

Century. He began his presidency just three days before the September 11, 2001, terrorism attacks and was responsible for

restructuring the church body and guiding its people to express their faith in Christ.

“Jerry is infi nitely gifted in translating the mission of the church and will build bridges to communities where Concordia

can be most impactful,” Matt Berndt, former colleague and Director of Communication Career Services for the University

of Texas at Austin, said. “He is creating Christian leaders for the world, not just the church.”

Kieschnick had a dream to unite 100 million people to the Gospel of Christ by 2017, coinciding with the 500th

anniversary of Martin Luther’s 95 Theses. During his time as Texas District president for the LCMS, membership grew

by approximately 12 percent in the Lutheran church.

“Concordia is a great place for Jerry to use his gifts as a leader. He has a strong doctrinal understanding of the Gospel

and a perspective that allows him to listen to and engage people,” Ken Hennings, Texas District president, Missouri

Synod, said. “He knows what’s going on across various religious communities and brings experience and credibility to

Concordia’s mission.”

An alumnus of Texas A&M University, Kieschnick is returning to his native Texas.

“Jerry brings national leadership to Texas and is returning home to a University that he believes in,” Matt Berndt said.

Choir Receives Superior RatingOn Monday, March 7, the TLS Fifth and Sixth Grade Choir traveled to

Lutheran High North for the TAPPS Large Ensemble contest. The choir

performed three pieces for the three judges, earning a score of Superior from

each judge! This is a wonderful accomplishment for these kids on their fi rst ever

trip to contest!
