Holy Week Traditions

As we prepare for the great feast of the Lord’s Resurrection, I invite everyone to prayerfully participate in the solemn Holy Week Celebra-tions. There are some great traditions that accom-pany Holy Week. The first is on Wednesday of Holy Week. Sometimes it is called “Spy Wednesday” because it is the day Judas be-trayed the Lord. On Holy Thursday, the church is prepared the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. Holy Water is re-moved from the church. The Lenten veils re-main on the sacred images but the altar is decorated. Another altar is prepared for the sacrament to remain after Mass until mid-night. Then following the Mass of the Lord’s Supper there is a beautiful custom of visiting the Altar of Repose in different churches be-fore midnight. People stay for 15 minutes to an hour and pray quietly. Some people visit three, seven or more churches! (Sometimes other churches close early, but Assumption will be open until midnight; you might want to call other churches ahead of time to check.) By midnight the church is locked symbolizing the arrest of Christ in the garden. Good Friday is a day of Fast and Abstinence for Catholics. It is also a day when many Catholics make a good confession or pray the Stations of the Cross sometime in the after-noon. Some people just come to the church to pray silently between the hours of 12-

3pm. Many pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet at 3:00pm, the hour Jesus died. Assumption provides a Fish Fry for those fasting and ab-staining from meat on this day. Holy Saturday is a peculiar day. Nothing real-ly happens until evening except the normal Confession times. But when the sun sets, a great liturgy is celebrated in the church! The Easter Vigil is one of the most symbolic and prayerful Masses of the year. A candle is carved up ritually, a bonfire is blessed, a can-dlelight procession takes place and the Old Testament is read solemnly. Then the church erupts in joy with the proclamation of the res-urrection. Many parishes receive new Catho-lics on this night. Assumption has been re-ceiving new Catholics at various Masses all year so we will omit that rite. But the joy of the resurrection will still fill the night! Easter is really just a festive Sunday because every Sunday, Catholics commemorate the resurrection. But on this day, typified by dress-up clothes, families sitting all together, bonnets and ribbons in women’s hair (at least a few) we also renew our Baptismal Promises. New Life in Christ begins in Bap-tism, so on Easter Sunday the greatest symbol of Christ’s resur-rection is the recommitment of the Christian. God bless and Blessed Easter! Fr. Keller

Blocks in the Classroom

Why is it important for children to play with blocks? You may notice that in any early learning center’s classroom there are a variety of blocks. There are small wooden blocks, large wooden blocks, and foam blocks just to name a few. It is not just because blocks are fun to play with, but because they serve a greater purpose. Blocks teach children to “think outside of the box”, if you will. They help build creativity and help strengthen fine and large motor muscles. When children are work-ing together to build a “castle”, they are learning how to work with others.

“Our Faith in Action: Today’s Society of St. Vincent de Paul” airs on Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) on Sundays until May 6 at 5:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., and on Saturdays until May 12 at 5 p.m.

Find out what The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) is all about and how Vincentians live their faith, grow spiritually and make a difference for people in need. Vincentians across the country bring effective, personalized help to those in poverty, and share their stories of Christ’s love along the way.

To learn more about Assumption’s SVdP, visit http://www.assumptionstl.org/Parish-Outreach.

They may not all agree on where a certain block should go so they are faced with an issue. They learn how to work through these issues and come up with some sort of agreement. Building blocks is not only great for muscle development and problem solving skills, but also for count-ing. Children start off building blocks by making towers and then counting them. Once they have mastered build-ing towers, the child may move on to building struc-tures. As you can see, having blocks in the classroom and even home is an essential part of a young child’s day.

Light and Darkness

The Church now permits cremation. It was prohibited in the past because cremation signaled a denial of the resurrection. Today, the Church recognizes the practicality of cremation, as funerals have become expensive and graves take up a lot of space.

However, Catholics are not permitted to keep human ashes in a home or to scatter them. All cremated ashes should be interred in a blessed grave, crypt, or columbarium. For Catholics, the disposal of human remains is not a matter of convenience, but an act of hope that prepares both body and soul for the resurrection on the Last Day.

Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion 7

The Sacrament of Penance frees the soul from sin, fills us with grace, re-stores us to eternal life and reconciles us with the Church. The Sacrament of Penance helps us turn away from sin and grow in holiness.

During this season of Lent, consider making a bi-weekly confession.

The priests welcome anyone to Reconciliation and will make time to hear confessions any time.

Scouts Collect Caps for School Buddy Bench

The Assumption Cub Scout Pack 169 Den 2 Webelos

plan to earn a “buddy bench” for the school, however,

the Scouts need help from the Assumption family. To

obtain the bench, the Scouts must turn in 400 lbs. of

plastic caps (which equals 10-55 gallon-sized trash bags)!

By collecting the plastic caps, the Webelos are learning

how their recycling efforts make an impact here and in

the community. Once the

bench arrives, Father Keller

and Mrs. Sykora will deter-

mine the place for the bench.

To help the Scouts, please col-

lect all plastic caps and place

them in the marked containers

located in the church vesti-

bules and in the school.

Thank you!

Mass Intentions † Mass Intentions †† In Our Prayers Weekly Readings

Good Friday (March 30, 2018) is a day of abstinence for all Catholics ages 14 and older. On this day, fast, as well as abstinence, is also obligatory for those from the ages of 18 to 59. Abstinence means refraining from meat. Fast means one full meal a day, with two smaller meals and nothing between meals (liquids are permitted). No Catholic will lightly excuse himself or her-self from this obligation, unless there is a serious health problem.

Fast and Abstinence Guidelines for Good Friday

Adoration Chapel Volunteers Needed

Are you able to help clean the Adoration Chapel? We need volunteers (one person each week on a rotating schedule), who can clean on Wednesdays from 7-8 a.m. We now have six volunteers, but would like to have 12. The job entails dusting, vacuuming and straightening the books. If you are able to help our current volunteers, please call Judy Keller at 314-892-4974.

“Pilate again said to them, ‘Then what shall I do with the man whom you call the King of the Jews?’ And they cried out again, ‘Crucify him.’” – MARK 15:12-13

Jesus told us “whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me.” Every day we are presented op-portunities to help someone. Every day we have the opportunity to see the face of Jesus in others and be the face of Jesus to others. Pray for the strength and courage to stand up for those in need of our help.
