JESUS SENDS OUT THE TWELVE(ORDINARY TIME SUNDAY 15, YEAR B)

In our Gospel this weekend, we hear about akey or pivotal moment in Jesus’ mission and ministryand indeed also a fundamental moment in the historyof the Church. What is this important and history-changing moment…? Jesus summons the twelve disci-ples and then he sends them out, in pairs, to be part ofhis mission and ministry. We often think that theChurch began after the Resurrection of Jesus at Pente-cost; that is when the Holy Spirit came upon the apos-tles. In a way, this is true. However, our Gospel thisweekend reminds us that Jesus entrusts his work to theChurch (the twelve apostles) even during his own life.

Perhaps even more significantly, our Gospelgives a pattern or model of how Jesus wishes theChurch to continue his ministry and mission in everyage and every place. It is true that this task is given in aparticular way to Bishops and others, but it is also thetask of the whole Church: everyone! So, it is worth ex-ploring our Gospel to see how our Lord asks us to dothis…First of all, we can notice that there are two key verbsat the very beginning of the Gospel. Jesus first“summoned’ the Twelve and then he “began to sendthem out.” We too are summoned by our Lord. Thishappens in various ways. An obvious example is whenwe gather to celebrate the Mass together. Somechurches still have bells that are rung so as to do justthis: to summon the people on behalf of the Lord. It isworth noting that words such as “church”, or“ecclesial” actually come from the verb to call out orto summon. Our word “church” really means thosewho have been called or summoned!

Having summoned or called out the Twelve,Jesus then sends them out to be his messengers andambassadors. This happens to us too at the end of theMass. In fact, our word Mass actually comes from thedismissal at the end of Mass in Latin: “ite missa est.”This word “missa” gives us our English word missionor even mandate (and also Mass!). It means being sentout or co-mission-ed. We hear this at the end of theMass when the deacon or priest sends us out with thecommand: “go and announce the Gospel of the Lord”,or “go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.”

However, as we read our Gospel, we notice that

Jesus does not just send out the Twelve empty-handed,or without any help or instructions. It is certainly not acase of our Lord just saying “off you go and get onwith it!” Instead, he does several very important things.First of all, he gives them a mandate and his authority. So too with the Church. We are stewards and ambassa-dors of Jesus’ mission: we do not live our faith orspeak about our faith disconnected with the Lord. No,we represent or re-present him and him alone. We mustmake sure then that we know what the Lord wants ofus, so that we can speak and act in his name and not inours.

The Twelve also are sent out in pairs: not ontheir own. In other words, they are to support and tohelp each other as they carry out the message of goodnews to others. Again, this is also true for us. We are tohelp and to support each other. After all, if we try to dothings on our own, it can be very difficult and tough. There is also the danger that any ministry that we dojust on our own could become strange, or go off in thewrong direction. Jesus also gives detailed instructionsabout what to take with them and what not to take withthem: basically, they will be carrying the bare mini-mum. Why was Jesus so specific about this? Perhaps asignificant reason is that he wanted them to trust in himand not in their own resources.

We then hear how the Twelve preached repen-tance and cured many who were sick, either spirituallyor physically. What a wonderful ministry to perform inJesus’ name! This need for healing is as intense todayas it was 2,000 years ago when Jesus first sent out theTwelve. Our Lord asks us to be ambassadors of thishealing to so many who desperately need this ministry. So, like the Twelve, may we answer our Lord’s call ashe summons us and then sends out us to continue hismission and ministry of healing.
