The Dedication of the Basilica of St. John the Baptist (The Lateran Basilica) As we near the end of the liturgical year, we are making our rounds in honoring the

entire Mystical Body of Christ. In September and October we honored the angels. Then as

we entered November, we honored all the saints in the Church Triumphant in Heaven, followed by the holy

souls of the Church Suffering in Purgatory. Now we turn to the Church Militant in the arms of the Holy Bride

of Christ, the Church. Today we celebrate the dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome, but we also

consider the dedication of this church building and of all parish churches around the world. When the Emperor Constantine was baptized, he legalized Christianity in the Roman Empire by the

Edict of Milan in the year of Our Lord 313. He then encouraged the building of churches and he led by

example by building the Lateran Basilica named for St. John the Baptist. This basilica is on the very spot

where Constantine was baptized by Pope St. Sylvester. The ancient account says that upon his baptism, the

Emperor was “cleansed from the leprosy of paganism” (Lesson V, Matins). It was on the 9th of November

that Pope St. Sylvester consecrated the Lateran Basilica. Up until that time there was no solemn rite of

consecration. The altar at the Lateran Basilica was made of wood. It is said that it was the same altar used by St.

Peter to offer the Holy Sacrifice. Therefore, the pope decreed that no one could celebrate upon that altar

except a Roman Pontiff. The Lateran is the cathedral church of the Pope. St. Peter’s is the Principle church of

Christendom, but the Lateran is the Cathedral of the Bishop of Rome. St. Sylvester decreed that from that

time forward all altars should be built of stone. The wooden altar was necessary beforehand because it was

portable, moveable. In the days of persecution it was necessary that it be so. But a stone altar was a sign of

permanence. In the course of time the basilica suffered damage from fire, earthquakes and pillage. It had become a

ruin of ancient Rome. But it was repaired again and again. Finally it was restored by a complete rebuilding.

On April 28th, 1726, the Supreme Pontiff, Benedict XIII, consecrated it with solemn rites, and decreed that

the anniversary of this consecration be celebrated on this particular day, November 9th. In the Gospel today, Jesus speaks of the Temple that is His Body. St. Paul tells us that our bodies are

temples of the Holy Spirit. So, just as we prepare a special place to worship God, we must also prepare our

souls to worship God. Our souls must be a place where Goodness, Truth and Beauty find a home. In the words of St. Caesarius of Arles, “Do we wish to celebrate joyfully the birth of this temple?

Then let us not destroy the living temples of God in ourselves by works of evil. . . . Whenever we come to

church, we must prepare our hearts to be as beautiful as we expect this church to be. Do you wish to find this

basilica immaculately clean? Then do not soil your soul. . . Do you wish this basilica to be full of light? God

too wishes that your soul be not in darkness, but that the light of good works shine in us, so that He who

dwells in the heavens will be glorified. Just as you enter this church building, so God wishes to enter into

your soul, for he promised: I shall live in them, and I shall walk the corridors of their hear
