CHURCH OF THE SACRED HEART
Mass of the Lords Supper 5th April, 2012 7.30pm
Please ensure that all mobile telephones are switched off.
As the clergy process, all sing:
The glory of the cross we sing,
the cross of Jesus Christ our Lord,
who died and rose to set us free,
our way from death to life secured.
As once Gods people rested safe,
Protected by a lambs own blood,
So we acclaim the sacrifice
Of Jesus Christ the Lamb of God.
As once the chosen people passed
From pain to freedom through the sea,
So now baptismal water saves
The chosen, called to liberty.
At Passover before he died
Christ Jesus took the bread and wine;
This is my body, this is my blood,
do this as my memorial sign.
What once by Jesus was achieved
We celebrate with heart and soul,
Recalling and effecting now
The saving work that makes us whole.
The Gloria is intoned:
the bells are rung and the organ introduces:
GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO (Peter Jones)
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will.We praise you, we bless you,we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father.
Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.
For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
Responsorial Psalm (Robert Rathbone) Response (after choir): The blessing cup that we bless is a communion with the blood of Christ.
Gospel Acclamation: repeat after the choir:
This is my will, my one command, that love
should dwell among you all.
This is my will that you should love as I have
shown that I love you.
Gospel, homily and washing of the feet now follow, during which the choir sing:
Ubi CaritasDavid Briggs
During the offertory, the oils blessed at the Chrism Mass by the Bishop will be brought up in procession. During this, the choir sing:
Adoramus te, Christe Orlando di Lasso
If needed, all join in singing the hymn
The heavnly Word, proceeding forth
Yet leaving not the Fathers side,
Accomplishing his work on earth
Had reached at length lifes eventide.
By false disciple to be givn
To foemen for his life athirst,
Himself, the very bread of heavn,
He gave to his disciples first.
He gave himself in either kind,
He gave his flesh, he gave his blood;
In loves own fullness thus designed,
To be, for humankind, the food.
O saving victim, opening wide
The gate of heavn to man below,
Our foes press hard on evry side;
Thine aid supply, thy strength bestow.
To thy great name be endless praise,
Immortal Godhead, one in three:
O grant us endless length of days
In our true native land with thee.

Eucharistic acclamations (Mass of Creation Haugen)
Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts,
Heaven and earth are full of your glory,
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.
Agnus Dei: Mass XVII (plainchant)
Agnus dei, qui tollis peccata mundi,
Miserere nobis
Agnus dei, qui tollis peccata mundi,
Miserere nobis
Agnus dei, qui tollis peccata mundi,
Dona nobis pacem
The ministers of the Eucharist now renew their vows.
Please wait until all ministers are in place
to receive communion.
During communion, the choir sing:
Ave verum corpus Francesco Milani
Then all sing:
O bread of heaven, beneath this veil
thou dost my very God conceal;
my Jesus, dearest treasure, hail;
I love thee and adoring kneel;
each loving soul by thee is fed
with thine own self in form of bread.
O food of life, thou who dost give
the pledge of immortality;
I live; no, tis not that I live;
God gives me life, God lives in me:
he feeds my soul, he guides my ways,
and every grief with joy repays.
O bond of love, that dost unite
the servant to his living Lord;
could I dare live, and not requite
such love then death were meet reward;
I cannot live unless to prove
some love for such unmeasured love.
Beloved Lord in heaven above,
there, Jesus, thou awaitest me;
to gaze on thee with changeless love,
Yes, thus I hope, thus shall it be:
for how can he deny me heaven
who here on earth himself hath given?
After communion the priests and altar staff strip the altar and then, during the procession to the Altar of Repose, all sing the following hymn:
Pange, lingua gloriosi, Corporis Mysterium,
Sanguinisque pretiosi quem in mundi pretium,
Fructus ventris generosi Rex effudit gentium.
Nobis datus, nobis natus ex intacta Virgine;
Et in mundo conversatus, sparso verbi semine,
Sui moras incolatus miro clausit ordine.
In supremae nocte coenae recumbens cum fratribus,
Observata lege plene cibis in legalibus;
Cibum turbae duodenae se dat suis manibus.
Verbum caro, panem verum verbum carnem efficit:
Fitque sanguis Christi merum; et Si sensus deficit,
Ad firmandum cor sincerum sola fides sufficit.
When the clergy kneel before the altar of repose (pause if necessary)
Tantum ergo sacramentum veneremur cernui;
Et antiquum documentum novo cedat ritui:
Praestet fides supplementum sensuum defectui.
Genitori, genitoque laus, et jubilatio,
Salus, honor, virtus quoque sit et benedictio:
Procedenti ab utroque compar sit laudatio. Amen.
As the clergy recess, the choir sing Psalm 21
to a plainsong tone
Antiphon: They part my garments among them,
and cast lots upon my vesture
IF YOU ARE LEAVING THE CHURCH,
PLEASE DEPART IN SILENCE
Will you not watch with me
one brief hour?
