From The Pastor’s Desk
Today is a day when we are asked to consider the role of promises in our life. Perhaps many of you are counting on the promises your parents or close friends have made to you about Christmas and the special gifts they may have promised to get you, or at least hinted at getting you. When you think of the word ‘promise’, many of us think of the word politician, and we immediately start to get suspicious. Politicians have a bad reputation for making promises, but not keeping them. But in the realm of faith, we stake our lives on promises. Some people think that living life that way doesn’t get a person very far. The scriptures are full of promises – promises for this life and promises for the next. Mary lived her life believing in promises.
Today Mary is given center stage. It is now just a couple of days before Christmas and we are given the picture of a woman who had faith that God would be faithful to his promises. Mary believed that the savior would come into the world through her. Are we asked to believe that same thing? Will the savior come into the world through us? Or will he remain unborn? Now the promise is in our hands. Christ will be born into the world once again, but this time it will not be through Mary – it will be through us. We as a Church now have the responsibility of bringing the promise of Christ’s presence into our world.
Promises are not empty words in order to stop someone from asking or complaining. They are words that have meaning and hope inside of them. They can help a person through many difficult times. Knowing that someone has made you a promise that they intend to keep can be a great comfort and certainly a source of hope. If our children learn that promises made by their parents are promises that will be kept, then they may learn to believe more firmly in the promises that God makes to them.
God is a faithful parent to us, and so much more. Through our faith we rely on the promises that God has made to us. Like Mary, sometimes we have to face the future with a heart that does not have all of the answers. Everything has not yet come to pass. God has desires and plans for us that are beyond our imagination. After a while, a child knows that he or she can trust their parents when promises are made, because the parents have proven themselves to be trustworthy. We, like Mary, will be blessed if we believe that the promises made to us will come true.

A tremendous thank you to EVERYONE who came out and enjoyed our annual Breakfast with St. Nicholas on Sunday, December 9! It was a wonderfully festive event, with a line out the door, and due to your overwhelming generosity, we served close to 600 people and collected over 350 toys and $1,150 in donations for Brighter Tomorrows. And, it wouldn’t have been such a smashing success without the help of: James Smith and his band of incredible cooking elves, aka...KC’s (best break-fast ever!); Devyn and the teens from Team Spirit who made our nativity come “alive”; the Confirmation/First Communion families who kept things running smooth-ly for the full 5 hours; Mary Russell and the Children’s Choir for their charming performances of Christmas carols; St. Nicholas himself, Chris Edwards; my set-up crew...Lisa..; and lastly, to my hubby, Steve, who made sure all those last minute “honey do’s” were done. Thank you all so very much! Catechists, don’t forget our annual Epiphany Coffee Bar and voluntary Secret Santa Gift Exchange is scheduled for Sunday, January 6, 2019 from 8:00-11:30 a.m. in the Dining Room. We also bid a very fond farewell to Cynthia Padilla, 6A catechist at 9:00 a.m., who is moving to the northern climes of the Metroplex. We will miss Cynthia’s gentle yet insightful presence that has served our preteens so very well these past 6 years. We will miss you, Cynthia!
With the first half of the Faith Formation year coming to a close, be sure to check your child’s/youth’s attendance especially if they are first-year students or currently in sacramental preparation. Our Attendance Policy allows for a total of six absences for the entire Faith Formation year (one of the most lenient in the diocese!) to be eligible for sacramental preparation. If you are unsure about your child’s attendance and where they currently stand, please contact the Faith Formation Office. We’ll be happy to help you! We had a great time at our Santa’s Christmas Workshop on December 15! We thank all the adults and teens who helped out at this children’s event. Parents, we hope you enjoyed the afternoon out, as well... J SACRAMENTS & SUCH…. · Children in First Communion preparation will be
celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Wednesday, January 16 at 7 p.m. followed by a reception in the Narthex. Please contact Lisa with any questions.
