Pastor’s Poetry Post-It

“High Flight”

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth

And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth

Of sun-split clouds,—and done a hundred things

You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared

and swung

High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,

I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung

My eager craft through footless halls of air…

Up, up the long, delirious burning blue

I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace

Where never lark, or eagle ever flew—

And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod

The high untrespassed sanctity of space,

Put our my hand, and touched the face of God.

John Gillespie Magee, Jr. (1922-1941)

Pastor’s Post-It November 13, 2016

The long, ugly and angry election is past. Thank God! So is Veterans’ Day, when we remember all who have served our nation in uniform, living and dead, especially those wounded in body or mind. In November we enter into a month long remembrance of all those who have gone before us and, in particular this weekend, those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the principles that have made our country strong and great. They and their loved ones left behind are not forgotten. Today’s poet was such a youth. John Magee joined the fight against Nazism before the United States entered the war. At eighteen he crossed our northern border and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. His exuberance for flight, beautifully captured in this poem, led him to give his life on December 11, 1941, only 3 days after the United States entered the war. As we either celebrate the recent election results or sob with regret, we were mindful of wars past and those who fought them. We honor our veterans, recalling their service and sacrifice and especially in prayerful reflection on the common values that unite us as an American people and to bury the hatchet of animosity and division.

Time is just flying by as we look forward to next Sunday, The Feast of Christ the King. We celebrate this feast on the last Sunday of the Church year. This week our children will be learning and sharing about Jesus, our King. Jesus is not like any other king we have ever heard of! Jesus is King of all because he has conquered sin and death. He came to lead us into his kingdom, the kingdom of God. Jesus rules over all of us with love. We believe his kingdom will reign forever and his will is to be done on earth as it is in heaven. Let us celebrate Christ the King. There is no better way to celebrate than to celebrate at Mass Looking forward: Classes will NOT be in session from Tuesday, November 22nd through Saturday, November 26th. Classes will resume on Monday, November 28th.

This weekend our entrance hymn is Be Not Afraid, written by Bob Dufford. The song is based on Isaiah 43:2-3 and Luke 6:20ff. Jesuit Father Bob Dufford is an internationally acclaimed composer of liturgical music who has worked as a campus minister at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. Bob began composing music over 20 years ago as a member of the St. Louis Jesuits. He is currently working at the Jesuit Retreat House in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Be Not Afraid is his best known hymn, and is used for many funerals here at Holy Innocents and throughout the country. Some say that the bible includes the phrases “do not fear”, “do not be afraid”, “fear not” and “be not afraid” at least 365 times. The thinking is that these phrases are ways of God reminding us not to fear because He loves us and we are safe in His care. We only fear when we try to control, and do not let Him in. As you sing this beautiful hymn this weekend, contemplate the refrain, “…I go before you always, Come follow me, and I will give you rest.”, and be not afraid!

THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME November 13, 2016

First Reading: Malachi 3:19-20a The prophet Malachi warned that the time would come when all the evil people would be punished. He then speaks of the arrival of "the sun of justice, with its healing rays," believed by most to mean Jesus. Second Reading: 2 Thessalonians 3:7-12 Some of the Thessalonians claimed Christ's return was imminent, so they stopped working and asked others for food. Paul describes his willingness to work, so that he would not impose on others. He encourages them to follow his example and earn their own living. Gospel: Luke 21:5-19 Jesus warns of the persecution all Christians will face because of him, and how some will even be put to death. Yet he says they will not be harmed because "by patient endurance you will save your lives." If Jesus' followers are loyal, they will be resurrected and their suffering will end.
