Dear Parents,

Yesterday we acknowledged the feast day of Mary MacKillop, Australia’s first saint. Mary was born in Melbourne in 1842. She died in Sydney on the 8th August in 1909. Mary took the religious name, Mary of the Cross. Responding to the isolation of colonial families, she pioneered a new form of religious life to provide education for their children. She and her Sisters shared the life of the poor and the itinerant, offering special care to destitute women and children. She is remembered for her eagerness to discover God's will in all things, for her charity and for her abiding trust in God's Providence.

Holy God, source of all goodness, you show us in Mary MacKillop a woman of faith who lived by the power of the cross. Teach us to embrace what she pioneered: new ways of living the gospel that respect and defend the human dignity of all in our land. Amen

OVERDUE FEES AND LEVIES

I am very concerned that we currently have an excessive amount of overdue Levies and Fees. At Holy Name Primary School we are committed to providing a Catholic education to all enrolled children.

The Holy Name Community accepts that fees are a critical form of revenue for the school and that prompt payment of all levies and fees is the responsibility of all parents/carers of Holy Name students.

The fees and levies collected at Holy Name are essential in providing quality education for our students, and are used for the following purposes:

Provide teaching, administrative, classroom support and facilities Provide essential resources, materials, facilities and equipment Assist with providing activities such as excursions Maintenance of buildings, grounds and other facilities

As we are now into third term it’s imperative that Levy payments should be completed.

We have a number of options to pay outstanding amounts including BPay, EFTPOS, credit card (in person or over the phone), cash or cheque. For those families experiencing short or long-term genuine inability to pay fees and levies, we are committed to providing support to ensure that enrolment is not compromised.

Please contact myself, or Rosemarie, the School Bursar or Leanne if you have any queries.

MORRIS GLEITZMAN VISITS HOLY NAME

What a wonderful way to celebrate this year’s forthcoming Children’s Book Week by hosting a very special visit and presentation by Morris Gleitzman.

This very famous author came along on Tuesday and gave an insight to our Year 4-6 students on how he has written over 35 children’s books. He told some very interesting stories throughout his presentation and we were delighted to have him stay for a short time afterwards to sign students’ books.

Having someone of Morris’ calibre clearly supports and encourages all of our students to continue, and further develop, their curiosity in reading and writing.

“Where’s Wally?” ….. Where is Morris?

INAUGURAL HOLY NAME ART SHOW – 12th & 13th SEPTEMBER

We are conducting an Art Show this year with a view that this may occur every alternate year. We have such a wonderful visual arts programme and so this will be an opportunity to showcase the artwork of our children. This allows us to celebrate students’ art and an exhibition of artwork from the whole school in a variety of media is a spectacular way of doing this.

No doubt, seeing their work on display will engender pride, joy, and satisfaction for our children, especially if they can share their experiences with their parents or friends.

Sharing processes and art experiences with others helps to consolidate knowledge and ideas as well as develop the ability to evaluate their own and the art of others.

The Art Show will take place on Wednesday, 12th September through to early evening and Thursday morning, 13th September.

The children will be timetabled to go through the Art Show with their class and teacher so that they can discuss the art work (theirs and the work of others) with their teacher and friends. Parents and carers are invited to come along with their children before and after school.

The Art Show will also be open ‘late’ on Wednesday evening so that working parents or Grandparents can also attend.

Full details will be in next week’s Newsletter. The Art Show will be a great event, a brilliant display of our student’s artistic talents and will be a testament to the rich Visual Arts program we offer our students.

KEEPING IN CONTACT

One of our families is currently in the USA and will be there through to almost the end of the year.

It’s important to maintain connections between Ilaria and her classmates and it was wonderful to have a ‘Facetime’ session yesterday, whereby Ilaria was able to share some of her experiences of living near San Francisco and her experience of attending the ‘traditional’ American Summer Camp.

NEW TEACHER APPOINTMENT

Mr Ryan Hartnett, our P.E. teacher and Year 5H teacher (Friday) has taken up a new appointment through Banyule Council in the area of Community Health and Well Being, focusing specifically on 'healthy choices'. This is a great opportunity for Ryan and on behalf of our community we wish him all the very best for this appointment. Ryan's appointment will mean that he is no longer able to teach at Holy Name on Wednesdays ONLY. Replacing Ryan on Wednesdays for the remainder of the year will be Lori Sheridan. I'm sure you will make Lori feel welcomed and we all wish her an enjoyable and successful association with our school.

BOOK WEEK EVE! ANNA WALKER VISIT!

Visiting our P-3 classes next Tuesday will be the remarkable Anna Walker. Anna writes and illustrates children’s books. In 2016 her book, ‘Mr Huff’ won the CBCA Book of the Year for Younger Readers.

Anna’s latest book ‘Florette’ has been shortlisted for this year’s Picture Book of the Year Award as well as an extraordinary number of other nominations across many other Awards in Australia!

How wonderful and fortunate to have a currently nominated author/illustrator visit our school a week away from the official announcement!

** Please pop in and view the ‘Florette’ display in the school Foyer.

WAIT!!! THERE’S MORE ….

Next Thursday, 16th August we have an incursion performance for Prep to Year 6 focusing on another short-listed book for this year, ‘Walk in the Bush’ by Gwyn Perkins.

THE SCHOOL NEEDS YOU – SCHOOL FETE – 18th NOVEMBER

I know that the Holy Name Fete is the school’s biggest fundraiser. It’s held every second year and is extremely successful in raising funds that improve the learning environment for ALL our children. We are certainly hoping for another successful year. However, very disappointingly, the take-up for coordinator roles has been largely ignored!

Even though we have a very passionate and proactive Fete Committee, it is impossible for the Committee members to be across all

elements that contribute to a successful fete. Therefore, we are URGENTLY requiring parents to volunteer to take up some key coordinator roles that are available. These Roles are listed in the ‘P&F News’ page of this week’s Newsletter and I strongly encourage you to volunteer for one of these. This is a great way to get involved into the school community, and the impact and influence you have on your children through your volunteering and participation is powerful.

Please volunteer. We need YOU.

Please also consider coming along to the next Fete Meeting for further information and insight about the requirements for the Fete. This will take place on:

Wednesday the 22nd August at 7pm in the ILC room.

CONDOLENCES

We extend our sincerest prayers, thoughts and sympathy to the Benetti family on the recent and sudden death of Lisa’s mum, Teresa Donati, and Benjamin’s (6K) Nonna.

We pray that peace and God's blessings be upon the family at this difficult time and that God will give them all strength and courage in this time of grief.

INAUGURAL M.A.D. ANNUAL BOWLING NIGHT Just one week to go to our MAD Bowling Night! Come along, make great memories, enhance friendships and enjoy what will be a great evening with other dads and further strengthen our community partnership. It will also be a great opportunity for us to send off Nick in style as he will be leaving us at the end of the Term. Given the impact he has had on the school community, I’m sure you will join me in toasting him and wishing him well with his next challenge. Just a reminder that we kick-off at 6:45 for a 7pm start, Thursday 16th August at Keon Park. As mentioned in the past, an element in establishing this group is not only to act as an avenue for fathers to be involved directly in the school community, but also to provide opportunities to develop fellowship. This invitation is extended to ALL dads, irrespective if you’ve been able to attend previous meetings or Working Bees. Strictly RSVP by either emailing, calling, or texting Adrian Gervasoni 0407 058 497 or [email protected]
