Health Ministry: Mosquitoes-z-z-z Bite - Why Me? In the first place, mosquitoes don't bite, rather pierce the skin. Only the females "bite" humans and only because they need the protein and iron to reproduce. A blood meal is needed before they can lay eggs. The resulting itchy bumps are an allergic response to the mosquito saliva. Mosquitos are attracted to the carbon dioxide, lactic acid and octenol (a mushroom-like smell) found in our breath and sweat. They also sense the heat and humidity that surrounds our bodies. Mosquitoes may also have a preference for beer drinkers. Genetics plays a major part to whom the insect is attracted: *Higher the body temperature the greater chance you will be bitten. *Sweet skin - not sugar, but level of lactate produced by body when exercise. Some foods may cause body to produce lactic acid (yogurt and fermented foods). *Co2 release is largely dependent on your genes and/or your size which offers more skin surface. What to do? Replace all stagnant water in yard every week. Don't go out after dark. Use insect repellent containing DEET, which doesn't kill insects but disorients them. Good News: Mosquitoes prefer animals to people. Science Smithsonian/Activebeat/Facts for Kids

Msgr. McNary 4th Degree Assembly Meeting The K of C 4th Degree Assembly meeting is scheduled for this Tuesday, July 10th at 7:00 p.m. in the Knight of Columbus Council Hall.

Introductions to Readings by Bishop Ken Untener, in collaboration with Catherine Haven and Fr. Bill Taylor First Reading - Ezekiel 2:2-5 Our first Scripture reading describes the call of the prophet Ezekiel. He was a Jewish priest who was deported to Babylon at the time of the exile. He is called to proclaim God’s word to those who are exiled with him. God warns him that this will be no easy task.

Second Reading - 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 In the passage just preceding today’s reading from Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, he described some of his spiritual visions and revelations. But in today’s passage, he chooses not to boast of these, but rather to talk about how God has worked through him despite his weaknesses.

Coffee, Juice and Donuts Next Sunday Coffee, juice and donuts will be served after the 9:00 AM Mass next Sunday. Please join us!

SVDP Outreach Ministry - A Personal Story This month we had the pleasure of helping several moms and their children. We all had smiles on our faces as we delivered furniture to a lovely mother and her five young daughters who were trying to manage with one borrowed futon. The two youngest girls greeted us with hugs and smiles as we delivered their bunk beds. When we returned the next few times to add beds for their sisters and mom, along with living room furniture, a table and chairs and other household items, the joy was all around. Their full time working mom could not thank us enough for turning her bare apartment into a home for her family. This was a very rewarding month. We send a shout out to our gang of guys who make this ministry possible. There must be an art to loading a trailer, because with these guys, there is always room for one more thing.

July Outreach Ministry Need - Kitchen Linens If you can provide kitchen linens - new or used - please drop them off at the parish office and we’ll pass them along to our needy neighbors. Thanks!

TRADITIONAL VALUES. EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATION. St. John XXIII represents 150 years of Catholic Education dedicated to encouraging and developing well-rounded, self-confident and compassionate children and young adults who lead successful, mindful, service-driven lives. Our school community is the foundation on which our core principles of faith and hard work bind us together as a family.

If you are interested in a Catholic education that provides a challenging, structured and thoughtful learn-ing environment led by highly qualified and experienced teachers, contact Principal Dawn Pickerill at 424-1196 for a meeting and a tour of the school.

THOMAS B. FORDHAM INSTITUTE STUDY Last week I revealed the findings of the above study which declared that students in Catholic schools exhibited more self-control and self-discipline than students in public and other private schools.

The study had some key takeaways as to why they believe the above to be true:

Catholic schools not only value, but they focus on self-discipline, allowing them the opportunity to better foster it in the children they educate.

By their very nature and design, Catholic schools focus on religion which should not be underestimated in positively influencing a child’s behavior.

I believe that there are three words that can further explain the findings, at least at St. John XXIII Catholic School. They are relationship, expectation, and forgiveness.

We are a small, close-knit community; teachers and staff are dedicated to knowing students and families on a personal level. St. John XXIII Catholic School is a place where everybody knows your name and everybody expects everyone to act with a certain level of respect towards yourself and others. That being said, we also realize that mistakes will be made which will require forgiveness to be granted. We strive to teach everyone to learn from their mistakes and then go forth and do great things.

1. (b) The word comes from the Latin word for holy. The sanctuary is to be set apart in some way from the rest of the church. 2. (a) The reserved Sacrament is the Real Presence of Christ. The faithful can see at a glance whether it is present in the tabernacle by noticing whether the sanctuary lamp is lit. 3. (b) The sacristy is usually a room near the altar or sometimes near the main entrance of the church. 4. (a) From the Latin word calyx for “cup,” a chalice is made of gold or other valued material that is not porous. 5. (c) The word “ciborium” comes from the Latin word for food. 6. (b) The Latin root of this word simply means “to show,” as in the word “demonstrate.” Some monstrances have gold rays like the sun around the host.
