What is the Mass? The Introductory Rites The Sign of the Cross: “In the name of the Father and of
the Son and of the Holy Spirit”
The sign of the cross is an ancient practice and prayer with a visible sign that we believe in God and wish to come into the presence of the Holy Trinity. It is a powerful prayer to pour out tremendous blessings on our lives. Church Fathers saw the Christian practice of the sign of the cross prefigured in the Old Testament book of Ezekiel where a mysterious mark on the fore-head was used as a sign of divine protection and as a mark distinguishing the righteous from the wicked (Ez 9: 4-6). The New Testament saints are sealed with a similar mark. The book of Revelation depicts the saints in heaven as having a seal upon their foreheads (Rev: 9:4).
From biblical perspective, every time we trace the sign of the cross over the bodies, we are doing two things. First, we are expressing our desire to be set apart from the corrupt ways of the world in our own day. Second, when we sign ourselves with the cross, we are invoking God’s protection for our lives, to guard us from all harm and evil. To call upon God’s name is to invoke his presence and power. Calling upon God’s name is not only to praise him (Ps 148:13) but also to seek his help in our lives (Ps 54:1; 124:8).
At the start of the liturgy, we invite God’s divine presence into our lives in a powerful way to consecrate the next hour or so of our lives to the Lord and saying that everything we do in the Mass, we do in his name. In the New Testament, Jesus’ name is revealed to be on par with the holiness and power of God’s name (Phil 2: 9-11). In Jesus’ name, the sick can be healed (Mk
16: 17-18), sinners find mercy (Lk 24:47), and demons can be expelled (Lk 10: 17). Jesus himself responds to all who call on his name: “Whatever you ask in my name, I will do” (Jn14: 13). Moreover, his followers who gather in his name will receive the blessing of his presence among them (Mt 18:20). We gather in the name of God’s Son. We invoke his presence among us as we confidently bring our needs and petitions before him. These words were spoken when we were baptized. By repeating these words at the start of every Mass, we come not in our own name but in the name of the Triune God who dwells within us. We also are praying that this divine life within us might grow. So let us make the sign of the cross carefully and prayerfully. Prayers and Blessings, Fr. Lawrence
If you are aware that someone from the parish is sick, please notify the office so we can add them to the prayer list on Friday Mornings.
