Middle School Faith Formation
Dear Friends in Christ:
Today’s Gospel focuses on the actions of Jesus, Mark
begins the account as Jesus would have intended:
Jesus teaching in the Temple. Despite the attention
Jesus' miracles gather, those signs were always in
service to His teaching. In the Bible, God occasionally
used miracles to serve the needs of His people, but
meant them to confirm the message of the prophet or
teacher who performed them.
Before the people present could be amazed at Jesus'
coming miracle, they are "astonished" with His
teaching. Even today, we remember the impact of
some teachers we all have had in our lifetime. The
teachers who have made a lasting impression on us;
these teachers were the ones who had some
responsibility in making us who we are today. Even the
Old Testament prophets began with, "Thus says the
Lord…" Jesus, however, does not rely on confirmation
from other sources. He teaches as if He is the authority
on the passage at hand—because He is.
Today begins Catholic Schools Week, the theme this
year is Catholic Schools: Faith, Excellence, and
Service. These elements set Catholic schools apart
from other educational options and they are the
reasons why families make sacrifices to provide their
children with a Catholic Education.
Faith – Our schools have continued to be centers of
faith formation throughout the pandemic with daily
religious instruction, liturgical celebrations, and
sacramental preparations
Excellence – When other area schools remained
closed, we safely opened our doors using distancing
and safety protocols to provide the students with in-
person and virtual learning models to insure that there
would be as little a gap in student learning as possible.
Service – Our teachers gave of themselves to learn
new technologies. Our benefactors came to our support
by providing needed equipment and safety shields. Our
COVID taskforce met tirelessly to provide a protocol for
a safe environment and continued learning.
The 2019-20 school year; and the start of this current
school year has not been easy. The Pandemic has
changed the way we are doing many things and what
we have done in the past. As in the gospel today,
Jesus is in the business of teaching, first and foremost
and we are following in his footsteps. At Holy Family
school we are in the business of teaching too. We are
in the classroom five days a week and the teachers
have to keep up with the students in the classroom and
learning from home virtually. They are doing a
wonderful job this year during these difficult times.
If you or any family members have attended a Catholic
school, this week is a time to look back and reflect on
the time spent in a catholic school. But, nothing
compares to being in the halls of a Catholic School
where you are surrounded day in and day out by
teachers who live by the Catholic faith and love to
teach kids about it. Whether it is the bulletin boards I
see every day that remind our children that actions
should show how you love God and he loves you. I
believe Catholic education made me who I am today,
and I thank my parents while I can each and every day.
If you have kids in Catholic schools, you know that the
sacrifice is great and it can seem hard to sign that
tuition check at times, but it is worth every penny you
spend. Because someday your child will realize how
much it meant to you in sending him or her to a
Catholic school and they will thank you for it, and that
makes it all worth it.
One of the greatest gifts parents can give to their
children is the gift of faith. That faith is reinforced each
and every day at Holy Family Catholic School. Your
children might not realize it now, and they might at
times complain about school, but they will figure it out
soon enough. I am grateful every day for our teachers,
staff, parents and volunteers who make our school a
success. National Catholic Schools Week is a good
time for all of us to thank them for their dedication and
service.
Thank you all for your devotion and commitment to our
school.
Be good, behave, be safe, God Bless,
Mr. Beau Quattrone, Principal
Holy Family Catholic School

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
READING I DT 18:15-20
Moses spoke to all the people, saying: “A prophet like me will the
LORD, your God, raise up for you from among your own kin;
to him you shall listen. This is exactly what you requested of the
LORD, your God, at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you
said, ‘Let us not again hear the voice of the LORD, our God, nor
see this great fire any more, lest we die.’ And the LORD said to
me, ‘This was well said. I will raise up for them a prophet like you
from among their kin, and will put my words into his mouth; he
shall tell them all that I command him. Whoever will not listen to
my words which he speaks in my name, I myself will make him
answer for it. But if a prophet presumes to speak in my name
an oracle that I have not commanded him to speak, or speaks in
the name of other gods, he shall die.’”
RESPONSORIAL PSALM PS 95:1-2, 6-7, 7-9
R. If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts.
Come, let us sing joyfully to the Lord; let us acclaim the rock of
our salvation. Let us come into His presence with thanksgiving;
let us joyfully sing psalms to Him.
R. If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts.
Come, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the Lord
who made us. For He is our God, and we are the people He
shepherds, the flock He guides.
R. If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts.
Oh, that today you would hear His voice: “Harden not your hearts
as at Meribah, as in the day of Massah in the desert, where your
fathers tempted Me; they tested Me though they had seem My
works.”
R. If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts.
READING 2 1 COR 7:32-35
Brothers and sisters: I should like you to be free of anxieties. An
unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how he
may please the Lord. But a married man is anxious about the
things of the world, how he may please his wife, and he is
divided. An unmarried woman or a virgin is anxious about the
things of the Lord, so that she may be holy in both body and
spirit. A married woman, on the other hand, is anxious about the
things of the world, how she may please her husband. I am telling
you this for your own benefit, not to impose a restraint upon you,
but for the sake of propriety and adherence to the Lord without
distraction.
R. Alleluia, alleluia. MT 4:16
The people who sit in darkness have seen a great light; on
those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death, light has
arisen.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
GOSPEL MK 1:21-28
Then they came to Capernaum, and on the sabbath Jesus
entered the synagogue and taught. The people were astonished
at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and
not as the scribes. In their synagogue was a man with an unclean
spirit; he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of
Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—
the Holy One of God!” Jesus rebuked him and said,
“Quiet! Come out of him!” The unclean spirit convulsed him and
with a loud cry came out of him. All were amazed and asked one
another, “What is this? A new teaching with authority. He
commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.” His fame
spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee.
COMO SENTIR LA PRESENCIA DE DIOS EN TU VIDA
(segunda parte)
mente invitándolo a nuestras vidas, utilizando palabras sim-

Holy Family Parish is starting a Prayer Request Team
Parishioners are invited to (1) call for or email prayer requests for special intentions, or (2)
join the team to pray for other’s requests. The Prayer Request Team is a ministry of the
parish, but there are no regular meetings. Members would simply receive a call or email of
the prayer request and start praying for that intention. This is separate, but related to the
Prayer List in the bulletin. The Prayer List only has the name, but no specific intention
mentioned. Carol & Joe Dello Stritto coordinated the Prayer Request Team for our former
Our Lady of Joy Parish and will now do so for Holy Family Parish. To request prayers or find
out more about joining the Prayer Request Team, contact Carol Dello Stritto at 412-793-9567 or by email at
[email protected]. Pease leave your number if you want Carol to call you back.

Due to the positive effort by Holy Family Parish, 31
parishioners have pledged to pray a specific date each
month for vocations for the coming year. That means that
everyday for the coming year a form of prayer, fasting, or
sacrifice will be offered for the intention of vocations from
Holy Family Parish!
Although membership to the 31 Club has been satisfied,
there is always need of prayers for vocations. Please pray
as you feel called. No one’s efforts will be in vain. You may
choose ANY day to offer a form of prayer or sacrifice and
that will be additional prayers for the sake of vocations from
Holy Family Parish.

Join Holy Family Parish for a special at-home retreat -
33 Days to Greater Glory – a retreat with Father Michael Gaitley
Father Michael Gaitley, author of the popular 33 Days to Morning Glory has finished his third
book, 33 DAYS TO GREATER GLORY: A TOTAL CONSECRATION TO THE FATHER
THROUGH JESUS BASED ON THE GOSPEL OF JOHN. Our Parish has arranged a

beginning on Ash Wednesday, February 17 and ending on Palm Sunday, March 28. Each
day involves a reflection reading from the book and a consecration on the concluding day that we will have at our weekend
Masses on Palm Sunday. The book also includes a nine (9) day consecration to St. Joseph. In addition, Father Nathaniel
Polinski, OSB, one of the popular guest Benedictine priests for Masses in Plum, recently authored an academic book, That the
Scriptures Might Be Fulfilled through Perfect Worship. Father Nathaniel will share a presentation from his scholarly work on
Palm Sunday afternoon. The title of his presentation will be “Diving More Deeply into the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ ac-
cording to John.” Parishioners, especially those who have completed the 33 Days to Greater Glory retreat, are invited to attend
in person at St. John the Baptist Church or via livestream. Sign-up now to reserve your copy of 33 Days to Greater Glory. You

Escuchar a la otra parte e intentar ponernos en sus za-
patos tanto como sea posible, genera sentimientos de
validación a largo plazo.
Beautifying Our Sanctuaries
Holy Family Parish Art and Environment committee has been working on ways to beautify
our churches. Many of our churches use live plants in their sanctuaries. Over time these
plants begin to look tired and need replaced. If you would like to donate in honor of your
family or in memory of a loved one, please send a donation made payable to “Holy Family
Parish” to the attention of “Joyce Doyle - Sanctuary Plants.” Please indicate the church
and how the donation should be acknowledged in the bulletin. We will use the money to
purchase plants that are tolerant to the conditions of each church.
TICKET SPONSORS NEEDED
Holy Family School Monthly Raffle is looking
for ticket-printing sponsors.
If you are interested in sponsoring a month
of the raffle, please contact Joyce Doyle at
412-793-4511 X 401.
The cost of printing the tickets is $90/month.
Lenten Little Black Books /
33 Days to Greater Glory
The Lenten “Little Black Books” are now available at church
entrances and in the bulletin bins outside of the churches.
You may also contact any of the church business offices to
request a copy. We did receive a shipment of “The Word
Among Us” for lent which can also be picked up at any of
the offices.
“33 Days for Greater Glory” books are now available in the

WORLD MARRIAGE DAY
Holy Family Parish will be celebrating World Marriage Day at the weekend Masses on
February 13th and 14th. Couples will receive a special blessing in person or via
livestream mass. In addition, we would like to recognize our married couples in the
bulletin the weekend of 2/14.
Please send in a digital image of your wedding photo that includes your names and let us know how many
years you have been married. Or, you can send a recent selfie of the two of you with a sign that says, We
Still Do!.. As we did for our parish feast day with collections of nativity sets.
These photos can be sent to: [email protected] and must be submitted by Monday, February
8th to be showcased in the bulletin.
The Presentation of the Lord/Candlemas will be celebrated Tuesday, February 2
nd
and Feast of St. Blaise on Wednesday, February 3
rd
Our church candles that are used throughout the year will be blessed at the Tuesday Masses. Please bring your
home candle to church to be blessed and there will be a virtual blessing for those participating via Livestream.
Throats will be blessed at the Wednesday Masses. Please check the bulletin for church locations and Mass times.
The Presentation of the Lord is also known as Candlemas. Forty days after His
birth, Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple for the rites of purification and
dedication. It is one of the oldest feast days, celebrated since the 4th century A.D.
in Jerusalem and it concludes the celebration of the Nativity with the offerings of
the Virgin Mother and the prophecy of Simeon.
We are reminded that our parents presented us at church for our baptism. We
were dedicated to God, and given the name, “Christian.” We also received a lit
candle from the paschal candle, at which the priest said, “You have been
enlightened by Christ. Walk always as a child of the light and keep the flame of
faith alive in your heart.” Therefore, as a light, each of us must bear witness to Our Lord. We must be the beacon
that guides others to Christ. Every Holy Mass in which we participate is our presentation, we need to live our daily
lives with the awareness that we are dedicated people consecrated to God and that we are obliged to lead holy
lives. Pope St. John Paul II connected the feast day with the renewal of religious vows. A special offertory is
celebrated throughout the Church, in which consecrated men and women spiritually renew the gift of themselves.
Please pray for our Holy Family Parish priests, sisters, and religious to inspire them on their
journey.
We know more about the devotion to Saint Blaise by Christians than we know about the saint
himself. Blaise was a good bishop, working hard to encourage the spiritual and physical health
of his people. Legend has it that Blaise was hauled off to prison and a mother came with her
young son who had a fish bone lodged in his throat. At Blaise’s command the child was able
to cough up the bone, hence the blessing of the throats. The governor of Cappadocia, tried to
persuade Blaise to sacrifice to pagan idols. Blaise refused, he was beaten and eventually
beheaded. Blaise is seen as one more example of the power those have who give themselves
entirely to Jesus. With faith, we can follow the lead of the Church in asking for St. Blaise’s protection.

Why We Chose
Holy Family
Catholic School &
Preschool
"Our decision to send our
children to Holy Family Cath-
olic School and
Preschool is the best
decision we have made for
our children. They are hap-
py, confident, respectful, and
spiritual children. The
lessons that are taught go
beyond reading, writing and
arithmetic. Values and
morals are instilled in every
subject, not just during
religion class. We are so
appreciative to the staff and
families at Holy Family for
their unending support and
love, and we are
proud to be a part of this
family!"

On Mission Prayer
Father of Mercy, as we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! endow us
with your gifts of courage, collaboration, and compassion. Help us to fulfill the
mission of Jesus and his Church through vibrant parishes and effective
ministries. Raise up selfless, energetic leaders to serve the Church in fidelity
and with care. May we the Church of Pittsburgh in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler,
Greene, Lawrence and Washington Counties be sustained and strengthened
by your grace. Help us to learn Jesus, to love Jesus and to live Jesus. Hear
this prayer and grant it through Jesus Christ our Lord, with the help of our dear
Blessed Mother, under the mantle of her love. Amen.
