Would you like to be a volunteer tutor?

Volunteer tutors and mentors are currently needed to help with reading and writing, speaking and conversation, and reading drivers’ manuals. ABLE (Adult Basic Literacy Educa-tion) runs several programs in which you could offer your time from one-on-one tutoring to small reading groups and conversation groups. Roots of Empathy

page 10 - November

Learning • Faith • Safe & Caring • Stewardship

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

This letter is to tell you some exciting news that will affect children in our classroom this year. We’ve been invited to participate in a program called Roots of Empathy (ROE). This program teaches children about feelings, their own feelings, and the feelings of others. Once every three weeks, baby Emilia Marie Villarreal and her parent(s) will visit the classroom. A trained ROE Instructor will gather the children in the classroom around a green blanket and together they watch the baby grow. The children predict and cheer when Emilia Marie reaches the ‘developmental Milestones’ of the first year: “She can roll over!” “She got her first tooth!” She can sit up!” “She can crawl!”The ROE Instructor also coaches the children in observing the baby and reading the cues the baby gives as to how the baby is feeling: “Is the baby happy or sad?” “How can you tell?” And we use this discussion as a lever for the children to talk about their own emotions and to understand how their classmates feel: “Do you smile when you’re happy?” “How can you tell if your friend is happy?” Being able to under-stand how other people are feeling is called empathy. The ROE Instructor also visits the classroom before and after each Family Visit to prepare and reinforce teachings using a specialized lesson plan for each visit. For more than ten years across Canada and internationally, thousands of children are learning respect and care for one another with the lessons started through their Roots of Empathy baby. We’re excited that we’ve been chosen to participate in Roots of Empathy, and we hope you are, too. If you have any questions please let us know.

Sincerely,

Robyn Deveaux (Classroom teacher)

Lorraine Spence (Principal of HFA)

Scott Lachapelle (ROE Instructor and FSLW)

Christ the Redeemer Catholic Schools is pleased to provide a new notification service for school bus delays and cancellations on our website. If your child rides one of our school buses please consider subscribing to this service. If you choose to do so you will receive notification via email or text if your bus is delayed by more than 10 minutes or routes are cancelled due to inclement weather. There is no fee to subscribe to this notification service.

To sign up follow the link to our transportation page http://www.redeemer.ab.ca/Transportation.php.

1. Click on one of the subscribe buttons on the left side of the page; 2. Choose your child’s bus route # and enter your e-mail, or cell # and cell provider; and 3. Click on subscribe; 4. You can subscribe for both text and e-mail notifications if you want.

And that’s it – it’s pretty easy!

You can unsubscribe from the service at any time by entering the same information and clicking on unsubscribe.

If you are unsure of your child’s route number please check the number in the bus window, ask your bus driver, or e-mail us at [email protected].

Southland Transportation does their best to contact families when delays occur, but they are not always able to make those phone calls due to competing obligations during their busiest times of the day. This automated notification system is being implemented to help notify families of delays in a timely manner, and we strongly encourage all bus families to sign up for this service.

If you move or change bus routes in the middle of a school year you can easily unsubscribe from one route, and if needed subscribe to a new route all within a few minutes.

At the end of each school year subscription lists will be cleared. You will be able to sign up for the service at the beginning of each subsequent year once new routes are finalized.

Your participation in this service would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you from the Transportation Department @ CTR Catholic

PS - You will still be able to access Bus Route information for all routes in your area by clicking on the picture of the bus in the top right corner of your school’s website.

ANNOUNCEMENTNew Brooks Trustee elected to CTR’s Board of Trustees

Christ the Redeemer Catholic Schools is pleased to announce our new Brooks trustee, Mr. John de Jong who was elected on Friday, Oct. 28. Mr. de Jong fills the position left vacant after the passing of Mrs. Mary Stengler.

The election was held this past Friday in Brooks with Mr. de Jong taking the seat with the majority votes.

In response to the win, he said, “I am humbled and very honored to be the new Trustee for Brooks, and I thank and congratulate the other candidates for their dedication to Catholic Education. I am so pleased to see that the significant turnout for the election in our Ward also showed the dedication of our Catholic community to our schools.”

A long-time Brooks resident, Mr. de Jong helped form Catholic education in the Brooks area. Opening with one school (Holy Family Academy) in 1996 with 150 students, it has since grown to four schools (Holy Family Academy, Christ The King Academy, St. Joseph’s Collegiate, and St. Luke’s Outreach Centre) with over 1,000 students in total.

“Many parents, administrators, and teachers have contributed to the success of Catholic education that we witness today in Brooks. In addition, we have many organizations to thank, including St. Mary’s parish, Christ the RedeemerCatholic Schools, Grasslands School Division, and both the local and provincial governments,” he said.

Previously, Mr. de Jong was a dairy farmer and was actively employed with the oilfield and farm industries. Several of his family members are employed as teachers with Christ the Redeemer, and one is a teacher in Saskatoon. Mr. de Jong has served for several years on three school councils, and has experience serving on provincial and national boards. He continues to do this at the provincial level.

“Currently semi-retired, I am able to commit the time required to serve as the trustee representing the Brooks Catholic Schools. I recognize the crucial importance of working with other trustees and senior staff within Christ the Redeemer School Division, and the impact that the decisions made will have in our future. Being passionate and very supportive of Catholic education, I look forward to representing our Brooks Catholic school community,” he said.

Mr. de Jong has been a resident in the Brooks area for over 50 years. He and his wife Agnes are both active parishioners in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church. They have five children and 13 grandchildren.

Board Chair Ron Schreiber said, “I am very pleased to welcome John de Jong to the Board of Christ the RedeemerCatholic Schools as the newly-elected trustee for Brooks. I look forward to working with Mr. de Jong and want to congratulate him on his success in the by-election and applaud him on his interest and dedication for Catholic education in Alberta.”

Mr. de Jong will attend his first board meeting at the end of November.

Christ the Redeemer Catholic Schools operates 19 schools in the communities of Okotoks, DeWinton, High River, Strathmore, Brooks, Canmore, Calgary, Drumheller, and Oyen and serves over 10,600students.
