MISSION STATEMENT Holy Family Catholic Church is a spiritually and socially active parish. Rooted in the Word of God and nourished by the Eucharist, we cele-brate the life of our Lord Jesus Christ by proclaiming the Good News and providing spiritual growth, support and service with love. Founded by Italian immigrants a century ago, today our parish continues the tradition of extending a loving, caring and affirming welcome to all who join us as we Continue Our Journey of Faith.

5th Sunday of Easter 2019-C My brothers and sisters in the Lord! Today’s Gospel begins with a summary statement: “When Judas has gone…” Four words which are so poignant. We know exactly what Judas is going to do, even though it is not spelled out for us; he goes to complete the process whereby he will betray Jesus to the authorities. The next time Jesus and Judas will meet is when Judas leads the guards, sent by the chief priests and Pharisees, to the place where he knows Jesus will be. In four words, our Gospel passage for today reminds us of the role Judas will play in this narrative. Those same four words also prompt us to recall what has already happened in the room that Judas has just left. There, after the meal was concluded, Jesus scandalized Peter by wanting to wash the feet of all present. In the ancient world, washing the feet of another was a task for the lowest of slaves. That is why Peter is scandalized at Jesus’ behavior. His Lord wants to degrade Himself totally by washing the feet of sinners. Judas was one of those whose feet were washed by Jesus. As if that were not enough, Jesus then announces that one of them will betray Him. The one to whom He will give the piece of bread that He shall dip in the cup. This has clear Eucharistic implications. When he gives Judas the piece of bread, He says, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” Judas goes out into the dark. Judas leaves the light of Christ to go into the dark of Jesus’ enemies. But we see that Jesus has just demonstrated His total love for every human being who ever did exist or will exist. His double outreach to Judas makes it plain that no one is excluded from the love of Jesus. Jesus’ actions are powerful but they need some explanation. It comes in two forms. First, Jesus said, “Now has the Son of Man been glorified.” This statement meant that in Jesus’ actions, we see the work of God. The Son of Man, in demonstrating such all-embracing and all-powerful love, is the manifestation and the reality of the very love of God. The ultimate expression of the reality of God’s love is when the Son of Man, who came not to condemn the world but so that through Him the world might be saved, will make His ultimate, total and infinite act of love, when He is lifted up on the cross. There is no possible fuller expression of God’s love that that. However, the story does not end there. Jesus issues a commandment for His disciples to love one another as He has loved us. But how can love be commanded? If love is only seen as emotional, then it cannot be commanded. But we must remember that God’s love IS God’s total commitment. When we love as Jesus has loved us, by total commitment to any or all of God’s children, it is then that we make God’s love visible. It is here that we show ourselves to be Jesus’ representatives on earth, His disciples. Peace, Fr. Joe

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE “I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another." (John 13:34) It is easy to love someone when they love you back. But it takes strength and courage to love someone when we feel unappreciated, used or feel our opinion doesn’t matter. It takes courage to “love my neighbor” when he may be someone I don’t like, someone I don’t know or someone that doesn’t look like me. For Sunday, May 12, 2019 The actual collection was $9,382.00, $2,470 of which came from ParishGiving. The 2nd Collection for Building & Maintenance was $2,693.00. Mass Attendance was 1,303. God Bless You for your generosity!

Parishioners currently utilizing WeShare electronic giving must discontinue using that company and enroll with ParishGiving. This is mandatory. We have

tried to make the transition as seamless as possible. First, go to our website (www.holyfamilynutley.org) and click on the link to ParishGiving. You can then establish your account and set up your annual donations in a matter of minutes. Then sign into your account on WeShare and print out all your year-to-date donations for 2018 tax filing purposes as ParishGiving can only provide a statement for donations made through them. At that point, call WeShare at 800-950-9952 and tell them to cancel your donations going forward and e-mail a confirmation of the cancellation to you. And that’s it - - you’re good to go! For those new to the service, simply click on the link on the website and establish your account. It’s that easy.

VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED! Giving Garden volunteers are needed to assist parishioners, Linda Iorio & Sam Magalong, with site manager responsibilities on Tuesday mornings and Saturday mornings when necessary. Some gardening experience would be helpful, but they are willing to teach candidates the ropes in the organization of volunteers, planting seeds, and harvesting this much needed produce from the Giving Garden. A welcoming group of people returns each spring as volunteers and they can also share their knowledge of how the Giving Garden is organized. The Giving Garden is part of a larger community garden organization called A Lot to Grow (www.alottogrow.org). This organization financially supports the efforts of our parish volunteers and lends assistance in all aspects of the garden’s maintenance. Please contact either Linda or Sam by email: [email protected] or [email protected]

The Great Mission During this Easter season we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. This event compels us, as Christians, to announce this glorious Good News to the whole world. Many Catholics throughout the world will be responding by embarking on a Great Mission to announce the Gospel to the whole world in the streets and public spaces. Our Holy Father Pope Francis has always encouraged the faithful to go to the public squares to announce the Gospels, announcing the love of Christ to everyone and the good news that death has been overcome and the gates of Heaven are now open! Here in the Archdiocese of Newark as well, many of our brothers and sisters in Christ will go out to public parks and streets to announce this Gospel. In Nutley, parishioners will be proclaiming, “Christ risen!” on five consecutive Sundays from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, now through next Sunday, May 26. The location for these events will be near the playground in Yanticaw Park, just off Centre Street. Brothers and sisters, there is no greater news than to announce the love of God and Jesus Christ’s victory over death, and eternal life being offered freely to all. Everyone is invited to attend and I encourage you to pray that this mission produces much spiritual fruit.
