26th Sunday in Ordinary Time C-2016 My brothers and sisters in the Lord! Today’s Gospel message certainly makes us stop and think about how hard it is to change our routine or to try to change the habits of another’s life. We see the story of the rich man who feasted to his heart’s content with the best foods and, basically, the best of everything that life could offer. But as rich as he was, this man was so stingy that he would not even share the crumbs from his table. This makes us realize that the more people have, the more they have to lose. The more they have to lose, the more fearful
they become. When they become fearful, it makes them defensive and once they reach this defensive state, they begin to cut themselves off. The result is that they wind up with a heart that is so withered it is impossible
to breathe life. We must realize that to close one’s heart is to begin to die but to open one’s heart is to begin to live. At the end of the day, it is not what we carry in our purses or wallets or bank accounts that matters; it is what
we carry in our hearts. The rich man that Jesus speaks of today suffers from poverty of the heart which is the worst form of poverty that exists. A sizable chunk of the Catholic Church’s Catechism deals with our social responsibilities as children of God. Respect for every human person, human solidarity that is stronger than the urge to allowing oneself to live in the lap of luxury, are central to the Church’s teaching. In his encyclical,“Laudato si,” Pope Francis underlines the fact that it is the poor people who suffer most when there is unnecessary waste, when forests are cut down, and when countries in the southern hemisphere are affected with unsustainable debt. When we discuss the environment and tackling global warming, we should never forget whose health and whose lives are most at stake. These are religious issues, not just secular ones. The Church offers the world her teaching on the Eucharist, her explanation of the Bible, the directive on sexual morality, the beauty of pilgrimages, the rosary, as well as the beautiful liturgical music we experience in worship. Catholic Social Teaching is not an optional add-on to these. It is an integral part of the same message. We can thank God that so many Christians have taken this to heart. We can pray that we will never be part of the scandal of wealth, while those who are poor cry out to God, “Lord, how long?” Today we come to the conclusion of our 25th Annual Italian Festival in honor of Maria Santissima Addolorata. Lots of hard work goes into the preparation of these days and we need to be grateful for all the hands that have worked together to make it such a success. After all, we are working together for the benefit of our parish and we need to be grateful for the precious gift of Stewardship and that the Time, Talent and Treasure of Heart is used for the honor and glory of our God as we share these special gifts with one another. Our parish of Holy Family is comprised of so many gifted parishioners and volunteers, whether it is a feast volunteer, Eucharistic Minister, Lector, Server, Choir Member, Usher, as well as any members of a given society. We are all here to work together and not feel threatened by another’s gifted talents. Let us give thanks to God for the work of many hands who came together to make the feast the success it is under the direction of Gina Tamburri and all the volunteers. Many thanks to the Devotees of Maria SS. Addolorata and the Societa Oriundi Castellani for their continued devotion of our Lady of Sorrows and most of all for keeping this beautiful tradition alive. Through the intercession of Maria SS. Addolorata, may God continue to bless you and your loved ones. Let us always remember that God moves where He wills and chooses whom He wills. His Spirit is at work beyond our imagination. Peace, Fr. Joe

LIFENET is organizing a “40 Days for Life” ef-fort of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion in America from Wednesday, September 28th – Sun-day, November 6th. We are asking people to come and pray for 1 hour per week for 6 weeks between
the hours of 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM at the Social Security Building in Montclair, 396 Bloomfield Ave. (across the street from a high-volume abortion center.) To get more information or to sign-up to volunteer, call Lisa Hart at 973-769-4422 or email [email protected]. Prayer saves lives.
