Pentecost Sunday - 31 May 2020 Year A/2

Divine office Psalter Week 1

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles (2:1-11)

When Pentecost day came round, the apostles had all met in one room, when suddenly they heard what

sounded like a powerful wind from heaven, the noise of which filled the entire house in which they were

sitting; and something appeared to them that seemed like tongues of fire; these separated and came to rest

on the head of each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak foreign languages

as the Spirit gave them the gift of speech.

Now there were devout men living in Jerusalem from every nation under heaven, and at this sound they all

assembled, each one bewildered to hear these men speaking his own language. They were amazed and

astonished. „Surely‟ they said „all these men speaking are Galileans? How does it happen that each of us

hears them in his own native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; people from Mesopotamia, Judaea

and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya round Cyrene; as

well as visitors from Rome – Jews and proselytes alike – Cretans and Arabs; we hear them preaching in our

own language about the marvels of God.‟

The Word of the Lord

Thanks be to God

Responsorial Psalm (103:1. 24. 29-31. 34. R. v.30)

(R.) Lord, send out your Spirit and renew the face of the earth.

Bless the Lord, my soul! Lord God, how great you are,

How many are your works, O Lord! The earth is full of your riches. (R.)

You take back your spirit, they die, returning to the dust from which they came.

You send forth your spirit, they are created; and you renew the face of the earth. (R.)

May the glory of the Lord last for ever! May the Lord rejoice in his works!

May my thoughts be pleasing to him. I find my joy in the Lord. (R.)

A reading from the first letter of St Peter to the Corinthians (1 Cor 12:3-7, 12-13)

No one can say, „Jesus is Lord‟ unless he is under the influence of the Holy Spirit.

There is a variety of gifts but always the same Spirit; there are all sorts of service to be done, but always

to the same Lord; working in all sorts of different ways in different people, it is the same God who is

working in all of them. The particular way in which the Spirit is given to each person is for a good

purpose.

Just as a human body, though it is made up of many parts, is a single unit because all these parts, though

many, make one body, so it is with Christ. In the one Spirit we were all baptised, Jews as well as Greeks,

slaves as well as citizens, and one Spirit was given to us all to drink.

The Word of the Lord

Thanks be to God.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Response: Lord, hear our prayer

Celebrant: Since God endows us with the gift of his own life, by imparting the Holy Spirit, let us come to him with prayers inspired by the Holy Spirit. Let us come to him, alive and free in the divine presence.

Reader: For all who have been signed and sealed with the Holy Spirit, that this Church may be united as one body made of many parts. Let us pray to the Lord (R)

Reader: For the peoples of the world who do not know God, that the Spirit of truth proclaimed to every nation may indeed “renew the face of the earth”. Let us pray to the Lord (R)

Reader: For the outpouring of the Spirit of peace, that men and women may know the forgiveness of their sins. Let us pray to the Lord. (R)

Reader: For ourselves as we gather in prayer, that the Spirit who makes holy our Eucharistic gifts may strengthen and refresh us. Let us pray to the Lord (R)

Reader: For the souls of the departed, that they may be made perfect in the life-giving Spirit, especially recently deceased James Casey, and for Michael Halvey, George Farrugia and Diana Zammit whose anniversaries of death occur around this time. Let us pray to the Lord. (R)

Celebrant: Father all-powerful, receive theses prayers from a people made one by the Holy Spirit, who always dwells within us. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen

Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia!

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful

and kindle in them the fire of your love.

Alleluia!

A reading from the holy Gospel according to

John (20:19-23)

In the evening of the first day of the week, the doors were closed in the room where the disci-ples were, for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them. He said to them, „Peace be with you‟, and showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were filled with joy when they saw the Lord, and he said to them again, „Peace be with you.

„As the Father sent me, so am I sending you.‟

After saying this he breathed on them and said:

„Receive the Holy Spirit. For those whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven: for those whose sins you re-tain, they are retained.‟ The Gospel of the Lord Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ

Sequence

Holy Spirit, Lord of light, From the clear celestial height Thy pure beaming radiance give.

Come, thou Father of the poor, Come with treasures which endure; Come, thou light of all that live!

Thou, of all consolers best, Thou, the soul‟s delightful guest, Dost refreshing peace bestow;

Thou in toil art comfort sweet; Pleasant coolness in the heat; Solace in the midst of woe.

Light immortal, light divine, Visit thou these hearts of thine, And our inmost being fill:

If thou take thy grace away, Nothing pure in man will stay; All his good is turned to ill.

Heal our wounds, our strength renew; On our dryness pour thy dew; Wash the stains of guilt away:

Bend the stubborn heart and will; Melt the frozen, warm the chill; Guide the steps that go astray.

Thou, on us who evermore Thee confess and thee adore, With thy sevenfold gifts descend:

Give us comfort when we die; Give us life with thee on high; Give us joys that never end.

The Archdiocese of Sydney recognises that staying safe online is something many adults, children and

young people are concerned about. Technology is changing now more than ever, it is important that we can

remain aware of potential online challenges and equip ourselves with the tools we need to protect not only

ourselves online but children and young people. In light of the current situation, more research has been

conducted about the risks and challenges that children and young people face online, according to the

Australian Bureau of Statistics, ninety-seven per cent of households with children aged under 15 years have

access to the internet, with an average number of seven devices per household, ninety-nine per cent of

young people aged 15 - 17 years are online averaging 18 hours per week of online activity.

The Safeguarding Office is receiving more enquiries then ever relating to online safety and the use of the

internet, with this increase the Safeguarding Office thought it would be a perfect opportunity for Child

Protection Week to develop eSafety resources. The Safeguarding Office wants to develop resources that will

provide adults, children and young people with the knowledge and skills to help keep them safe online. We

are turning towards our parish communities for help to roll out this great initiative, we have developed a 5

minute CyberSafety Survey for adults and children to complete that will enable us to gain a better

understanding about the knowledge adults, children and young people have about eSafety as well as

develop resources that are targeted the needs of our Archdiocese community.

The CyberSafety Survey is made up of 26 questions, 13 of these questions are to be answered by adults and

the other 11 questions are to be answered by children and young people. The survey is anonymous and will

only take 5 minutes to complete, very quick and easy. We are encouraging as many people as possible to

get involved, you don't have to have children in order to participate in the survey. The questions have been

designed to be fun and gauge an individuals basic understanding of eSafety. We have also asked what

specific resources adults, children and young people would like the Safeguarding Office to develop to help

them better understand eSafety.

To complete the survey please go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/TC7CYQ3 .

The Safeguarding Office appreciates your support in safeguarding your parish community and supporting

2020 Child Protection Week initiative.

Can you help?

As you know our Parish is involved with One Meal, a local charity proving a weekly food service for the homeless and those in need at different areas throughout the Sutherland Shire.

As a Parish we are volunteering at the service in Miranda and we are doing a call out to you all for some breakfast items. If you could bring in any of the below to the Parish Office we would be most appreciative as these items will be given to those in need.

Prayer to the Holy Family

Jesus, Mary and Joseph,

in you we contemplate

the splendour of true love;

to you we turn with trust.

Heavenly Father,

grant that our families too

may be places of

Communion and prayer,

authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic churches.

Heavenly Father,

may families never again

experience violence,

rejection and division;

may all who have been hurt

or scandalised find ready comfort and healing.

Heavenly Father,

make us once more mindful of the sacredness

and inviolability of the family,

and its beauty in God‟s plan.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph,

graciously hear our prayer.

Amen
