ST. LUKE AND HIS GOSPEL Friday of this week, October 18th, is the Feast of St. Luke the Evangelist. After the Second Vatican Council ended, the Church revised the Lectionary, and for Sundays and Great Solemnities adopted a three-year cycle. During Year A, the Sunday Gospels are taken from St. Matthew's Gospel; Year B - St. Mark; Year C - St. Luke. St. John's Gospel is used in Lent and Easter Time. We are presently in Year C, and we have been reading from Luke's Gospel since last December. When Pope Francis decided to have an Extraordinary Year of Mercy - 2016, he purposely located the Year of Mercy in a Cycle C Year, precisely that we might read St. Luke in that year. Truly Luke's Gospel is the Gospel of Mercy. Let us examine some things about St. Luke: 1. Luke is the only writer of the Bible of pagan origins: Every other person who put pen to paper to write

words of the Bible was born Jewish, and so was intimate with the Jewish world. Luke was converted from paganism by St. Paul, and so looked at the reality of Jesus from a completely different perspective.

Because of this, there are many traditions about Luke. Paul says he is a doctor, but he was also believed to be a painter. Jewish people were forbidden to draw images, but since he was born pagan, he could learn to draw images. It is believed he painted the Virgin Mary.

2. Luke was the special friend of Mary: At the beginning of his Gospel, Luke informs us that he went to

Israel to discover the eyewitnesses of Jesus' life. Since he was born in far-off Turkey, he had no knowledge of Israel, and was not present like the Apostles for the public ministry of Jesus. So, he had to depend on eyewitnesses. Among those witnesses, the greatest was Mary, and it is only Luke's Gospel that tells us of

the Annunciation; the Visitation; the Birth in the stable; the Presentation and the Finding in the Temple. Where did he get this from? Mary!

3. Luke wrote another Book - the Acts of the Apostles: Of the 27 books of the New Testament, two

are from the pen of Luke - his Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles. In fact, it is believed that originally it was one long book, but was broken in order to fit the Gospel of John as the fourth Gospel. The Acts of the Apostles is a unique book in the Bible. It traces the growth of the Church from the Ascension of Jesus; through Pentecost; through the first conversions; through Paul's three missionary journeys until he arrives in Rome. It is an exciting book thats complements his Gospel - because of the perspective of the Holy Spirit at work in Jesus and then in His Church.

4. The Gospel is a long Journey to Jerusalem: One of the interesting facts of Luke's Gospel is how it is

structured. After the accounts of Jesus's childhood, Luke shows how Jesus began in Galilee and had His eyes fixed on Jerusalem - His Death and Resurrection. So the Gospel is like a great Pilgrimage - to Calvary, the Resurrection and victory. And it draws us into the journey!

5. Luke's Gospel is the Gospel of Mercy: Since Luke was not concerned about the Jewish laws, he

turned his attention to the aspects of Jesus that deal with mercy. His Gospel is very attentive to the poor and the suffering. It is his Gospel that contains the unique parables of Mercy: Lazarus; the lost sheep; the lost coin; the Prodigal Son and the Good Samaritan. Luke sees Jesus as the great Liberator of the poor - I have come to bring Good News to the poor; to set the captives free; to announce a Year of Mercy!

In many Dioceses, the Feast of Luke is the occasion for the ``White Mass'', a Mass for doctors, nurses and all those who work in the medical field. We have many such people at Holy Cross - may Luke help you to serve with compassion!
