On this New Year’s Day we honor Mary, as the Mother of Jesus,
the Mother of God. The Goepel says that Mary kept all these
things in her heart. The Gospel also commemorates the circum-
cision of Jesus on the eighth day after His birth. This day is also
called “The Octave of the Nativity”. However, the Blessed Vir-
gin supercedes these, for without her, chosen and kept pure by
God, none of these things would have occurred.
This day can also be celebrated as “The World Day of Peace”,
so in addition to Christmas Carols and Hymns to Mary, our Of-
fertory Hymn is a prayer for peace throughout the world, a peace
which is difficult to achieve, but for which we hope.
At this New Year, I, and everyone in the ministry of Music wish
to thank our Pastor, Msgr. J. Robert Yeazel for his constant sup-
port of our work. Thanks also to the other priests, Msgr.
Sheehan, Fr. Vavonese, Fr. Lou Sogliuzzo, and Msgr. Kopp for
their support, also our Deacons Dare Dutter and Nathan Gunn,
Sister Rose Bill, all the staff of Holy Cross and most especially,
YOU, the parishioners of our parish for your participation and
overflowing compliments of the music at Holy Cross. We all
sing together to the Lord! A Happy, Blessed, and Prosperous
New Year to all!.

Welcome
“Welcome”: to greet (someone) in a warm and
friendly manner: to receive or accept (something)
with happiness or pleasure
So simple! Everyone is invited to be an active a
part of the Welcoming Mission of our Church. We
are each called to be present in the lives of others.
This can be done in a variety of ways, some very simply and oth-
ers with more effort, individually or as a family…
As simply as arriving to Mass 10 – 15 minutes early to open
the door, offer a friendly smile and a warm welcome. It’s that
easy!
Others may wish to assist with refreshments, service projects,
special prayer events as needed. If you are interested in assisting
the Welcome Team, please contact Julie Sheridan at the office
#446-0473 or [email protected]
This is just one of the MANY ministries of Holy Cross Parish
that are open to all, and that offer the opportunity for us to live
faith as a natural way of life, welcoming all!
May the New Year bring Peace, Promise and Hope to all!
May all experience the love and mercy of God,
Our heavenly Father,

No exposition of the Blessed Sacrament
“Come to the edge, he said. They said: We are afraid. Come to
the edge he said. They came. He pushed them and they flew.”
What did Guillaume Apollinaire (1880-1918) know,
they didn’t?
If that point resonates, then your adventure on the edge begins
on Saturday morning, January 14th. It is that simple. The time
is 8:45 am in Yeazel Hall (downstairs in our Church) on Saturday
01/14/17. Your commitment is only about 40 minutes to write
down your aspirations, desires and hankerings for 2017. For your
effort, a 2017 plan will rise up from your core. Guaranteed to be
interesting and fun.
All the specific, time-tested tools will be provided. Bring
your own pen and coffee. Bring extra family or a friend. It is all
confidential and anonymous. Please email Bill Sovik -
[email protected] to register by 01/10/17 for a headcount.

Refugee Assistance Committee
Catholic Charities of Onondaga County, working with
the United Nations and the US Bishops, helps to resettle
approximately a thousand refugees in Syracuse each year.
Refugees, by definition, have suffered unimaginable loss:
their home, their community and often the loss of close
family members due to government oppression or violence.
Our Refugee Assistance Committee seeks ways to be-
friend and support newly arrived refugees. Over the past
few months the committee worked on these projects:
1.) Refugee Resettlement’s clothing closet for incoming
refugee families: donations for our parish and from other
parishes were sorted and organized for the use of incoming
refugee families and their caseworkers. 2.) We hosted a
potluck dinner at Holy Cross for refugees working toward
earning their US citizenship. 3.) A team of parishioners is
available to help Catholic Charities caseworkers set up
apartments for incoming refugee families. To join the com-
mittee, contact Beth (contact info above).
Winter Clothing Donations: Thank you for your dona-
tions! Many refugee families arrived this month, & families
with many children shopped the closet for winter coats and
boots. Children’s coats & boots & adult parkas in small &
medium are a ongoing need this winter. Donations left in
our downstairs parish closet are collected by volunteers &
brought to Refugee Resettlement’s CYO Building on North
Salina Street. We could use your help with sorting the
clothing donations here, or with taking donations to the
North Side CYO. Please contact Beth info above.
Neighbors Helping Neighbors (NHN)
NHN is an email list of volunteers willing to help others.
The program, unique to Holy Cross, is just over 2 years old.
Each request is different, yet each volunteer who responds
to a request makes a new friend and makes life easier for a
neighbor who needs help. Our volunteers report that they
receive more than they give by building relationships and
by receiving gratitude for their gift of time and care. If you
are interested in helping a neighbor in need once in awhile,
we will send a request to the general list, and volunteers are
free to respond to the request for help when they are able to
do so. To join the email list, fill out a NHN card in your
pew & drop it in the collection basket or email helping
