THE DEEP END : Do not let your hearts be troubled
‘Worrying is carrying tomorrow’s load with today’s strength – carrying two days at
once. It is moving into tomorrow ahead of time. Worrying doesn’t empty tomorrow
of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength.’
Corrie ten Boom had plenty of cause for worry over the course of her lifetime. Dur-
ing World War II, she, along with her father and sister, provided a refuge in their
home for a number of Jewish friends, playing a pivotal role in the Dutch
‘underground’ who sheltered Jews. Their home was eventually raided and the en-
tire family arrested, her father dying in prison and her sister in a concentration
camp. Corrie was sent to a series of camps but was released, and afterwards told
her story in a book called The Hiding Place.
Corrie’s heart must have been troubled, often, but her strong faith sustained her
and became the lens through which she viewed her life story: ‘Every experience
God gives us, every person he puts in our lives is the perfect preparation for the
future that only he can see.’
The majority of us will never have to deal with as desperate a situation as Cor-
rie’s. But we have our own anxieties, whether big or small. None of us knows how
the future is going to turn out, and that is precisely why we tend to worry. In today’s
Gospel Thomas frets: ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going, so how can we
know the way?’ But Jesus has reassuring words. ‘I am the way.’ Hand in hand with
Jesus, we can walk the road ahead.

The beatification of Fr John Sullivan SJ
Fr John Sullivan SJ was beatified yesterday in Gardiner Street Church. The
principal celebrant and homilist will be Cardinal Angelo Amato, Prefect of the
Congregation for the Causes of Saints, and he will be assisted by the
Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin.
The Church of Ireland Archbishop of Dublin, Michael Jackson, will also be pre-
sent on the sanctuary. The ceremony consists of a mass during which a formal
request for beatification is publicly made. In an unprecedented ecumenical
gesture, this request will be made by the Church of Ireland and the Catholic
Archbishops together, reflecting the fact that Fr John was an Anglican for the
first half of his life and Roman Catholic for the second. In fact, the entire event
is unprecedented, as there has never been a beatification ceremony in Ireland
before.

The Christian Family Today and Tomorrow
One of the first acts of Pope Francis was to call a Synod of the
Church to look at the challenges the modern family is faced with
today. In his summing up of the Synod Pope Francis writes: “The
tensions created by an overtly individualistic culture, caught up
with possessions and pleasures, leads to intolerance and hostility to
families. Here I would also include today’s fast pace of life, stress
and the organisation of society and labour which militate against
permanent decisions”. (The Joy of Love #33)
The Irish family today is not in crisis, but neither is it in full health, there are societal and cultural factors that impinge on
the wellbeing of the family. The weakening of faith and religious practice has also an effect on families, leaving them
more isolated amid their challenges. The Synod noted that one symptom of contemporary society is loneliness arising
from the absence of God in a person’s life and the fragility of relationships. In large cities like Dublin the lack of afforda-
ble housing brings huge pressures on families. ‘The family is a good which society cannot do without, and it ought to be
protected’ (JoL #44).
From 21 to 26 August next year the World Meeting of Families (WMOF) will take place in Ireland. Pope Francis
personally asked Dublin to be the host city in 2018 and chose the theme The Gospel of the Family: Joy for the World.
In speaking about how the World Meeting of Families can help us on our path Archbishop Diarmuid Martin recently said:
The World Meeting of Families could be a seven-day wonder, a week of buzz and glitter and possibly even
the joy of meeting with the Pope. But the World Meeting of the Families is not a sort of spiritual travelling Circus
which moves around from city to city simply repeating the same performances. Pope Francis spoke to me
about the World Meeting of Families as a gift to the Irish Church. It should be a high point but a high point within
a process: a process which should help us dispassionately to look to at the inadequacies of our
pastoral work for families. . .
Let me say something about which I feel strongly: do not allow
ourselves to be become entangled in trying to produce
definitions of the family. Family is such a transcultural value
that it cannot be defined simply. We may find it hard to define,
but we all recognise what is family. We should not be rushing in
telling people what to do, without first recognising what is great
and beautiful and courageous in so many Irish families.
Family is about love, no matter how imperfect and failing: it is
about a love which enriches lives.
To celebrate the World Meeting of Families in Dublin next year,
the restoration of Holy Cross Church and the creation of a new
Pastoral Centre the parish acquired (through Fr. Kieran) a
modern sculpture called “The Christian Family” (2015) which is
now placed in the grounds of the Church near Emmaus House.
It was carved from Green Opal, which is form of Serpentine
stone by the sculptor William W. Chewa from Zimbabwe. It will
be a permanent reminder that at the heart of parish life is the
centrality of the love of the Christian family. We hope
that it will inspire you.
