Second Sunday in Lent

Good Lenten People of Holy Cross,

“Hi! How are you?” Answer: “Fine. How are you?” Answer: “Fine.”

Don’t you just love that ‘Fine’ and how untrue it mostly is. And do you notice, when people say something other than “fine,” we don’t want to listen? We ask how someone ‘is’; they ask us. Somebody pushes the question a little further: “Hey, what’s been happening with you?” Our response: tell that person everything that has been going RIGHT with us. As if we have to impress everyone with how “fine” we really are. I’m not “fine” and I don’t want to be. I’m “in process.” Some days are better than others. I make tons of mistakes. I’m a sinner. God isn’t finished with me yet. Jesus spends most of His time with sinners, and calls them to repentance, to look with different eyes, to be open to possibilities, to be going through the hard process of picking up a cross and dying to myself, so that there’s more of Jesus left when it’s over. Nope. I’m not “fine. I’m “in process.” I have been forgiven, I’m working in this life to be justified, so that when I get to see God face to face I will be saved. May your Lenten journey not be fine! No te encanta ese "Bien" y lo falso que es en su mayoría? ¿Y te das cuenta de que cuando la gente dice algo que no es "bueno", no queremos escuchar? Preguntamos cómo "está" alguien; nos preguntan. Alguien empuja la pregunta un poco más lejos: "Oye, ¿qué ha estado pasando contigo?" Nuestra respuesta: decir a esa persona todo lo que ha estado CORRECTAMENTE con nosotros. Como si tuviéramos que impresionar a todos con lo "bien" que realmente somos. No estoy "bien" y no quiero estarlo. Estoy "en proceso". Algunos días son mejores que otros. Cometo muchos errores. Soy un pecador, Dios no ha terminado conmigo todavía. Jesús pasa la mayor parte de su tiempo con los pecadores, y los llama al arrepentimiento, a mirar con otros ojos, a estar abiertos a las posibilidades, a pasar por el difícil proceso de levantar una cruz y morir para mí mismo, para que haya más de Jesús cuando termine. No, no estoy bien, estoy "en proceso". 40 DAYS TO RAISE THE ROOF We have 11 leaks in our church roof. Consequently, our new organ has not been working, paint is peeling, drops falling on heads, and when it rains, it really pours! The good news is our Finance Council has approved the use of our savings to install a new roof which will cost $150K. In Lent, we are called to sacrifice and there really is no place like home. Both the Finance Council and Pastor’s Advisory Board are encouraging parishioners for a one-time gift to help defray the cost of the roof as part of your Lenten sacrifice. We are asking each individual or family to take an envelope and pray about this offering. Our savings will take a substantial hit; every donation, no matter how big or small, will make a difference! Think about denying yourself something(s) during these holy days and help us Raise the Roof! Envelopes are available in the narthex. My hope and prayer is that we will not need to touch our savings and so I leave this in God’s hands and your good and generous hearts. Will share total Easter Sunday. Fr. Jude Michael

40 DÍAS PARA LEVANTAR EL TECHO Tenemos 11 goteras en el techo de nuestra parroquia. MISSIONARIES OF THE POOR FOOD DRIVE - LENT 2019 The Missionaries of the Poor are dedicated to "Joyful Service with Christ on the Cross" by serving the poorest of the poor. They desperately need basic food items to feed over 500 people in Jamaica on a daily basis. This year, peanut butter and boxes of spaghetti only (no other types of pasta, please!) Working in St. Vincent’s Vineyard A young married couple living in an extended-stay motel room met a young man who was also a resident at the motel. They struck up a friendship and soon concocted a plan to pool their meager resources and rent an apartment together. In order to save for the down payment and first month’s rent, the three moved out of the motel and spent a harrowing two and a half weeks living in the friend’s pick-up truck.

They were finally able to come up with the funds and moved into an apartment. The couple found jobs within walking distance of their new home. It was now time to pay the second month’s rent; however, the three came up short as the couple had not yet received their first paychecks. At this point they reached out to the SVDP Society for help. Thanks to the generosity of Holy Cross parishioners, the SVDP Society was able to provide the balance of the money needed for the rent. As the paychecks start coming in, the three feel confident they are on their way to financial security. They were extremely grateful for the assistance provided by the good people of Holy Cross. In February through your generous contribution of $6,750, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to assist 13 families including 17 children providing $1884 in temporary lodging, $2253 for utility and $3670 in rent. Thank you for your generosity and May God continue to bless you abundantly. The Ministry is reaching out for men and women who strive to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to our brothers and sisters in Christ. Trabajando en el Viñedo de San Vicente. Un joven matrimonio que vive en una habitación de motel para estadías prolongadas conoció a un joven que también era residente en el motel. Se hicieron amigos y pronto prepararon un plan para juntar sus escasos recursos y alquilar un apartamento juntos. Con el fin de ahorrar para el pago inicial y el alquiler del primer mes, los tres se mudaron del motel y pasaron una desgarradora semana y media viviendo en la camioneta pick-up del amigo. Finalmente pudieron llegar a los fondos y se mudaron a un apartamento. La pareja encontró trabajo a poca distancia de su nuevo hogar. Ya era hora de pagar el segundo mes de alquiler; sin embargo, los tres se quedaron cortos ya que la pareja aún no había recibido sus primeros cheques de pago. Volunteer to serve our Military Travelers! Our Holy Cross military veterans, Bob Spidel and Jack Horvath, each have volunteer groups which support our valued military and family travelers at the Atlanta Airport USO. Bob’s group serves on Mondays, and Jack’s group serves on Tuesdays, both ladies and gentlemen are welcome. This is done on a planned basis, when each person is available.
