Holy Cross Catholic Church A community of disciples of Jesus Christ called to celebrate, proclaim, and share the love of God with all people. April 22, 2018 Fourth Sunday of Easter Good Easter People of Holy Cross, Patty Griffin sings a song called “Mary” which includes these lines: “When the angels are singing his praises in a blaze of glory / Mary stays behind and starts cleaning up the place.” People think that being holy is about praying, meditation, and saving the day when people have serious needs, especially when sickness and death comes, (and sometimes it is!) but in reality, holiness is more about unclogging toilets, cleaning out the fridge, emptying the dishwasher, taking out the garbage, picking up after others, and being kind to the people no one likes to be around. Those are the unpopular jobs no one notices: the jobs of a servant. The good parts of this life are unforeseen: conversations and moments of trust that just happen as part of sharing life. The hard parts are similarly unplanned. Suddenly, the phone rings, and the day goes off-script. To be a servant is to give up control. To be a follower of Jesus is, too. Some days, we do it with more graciousness than others. Mary knows exactly what it is like to give up control; over her body, her future, even her understanding, in order to be at the service of God’s mission in the world. And Mary is at our service. What do we need from her today? Mary does not come in “a blaze of glory,” but full of grace. Grace is the choice to stop and talk, to be more cheerful or generous than you really feel. Grace is working behind the scenes to save an event, someone’s feelings, or a reputation. Grace is in a hundred moments that soothe and set us free. I love the image of Mary in Griffin’s song because I feel as though we all work alongside Mary as our praise takes the form of “cleaning up the place.” Fr. Working in St. Vincent’s Vineyard Recently two of our Vincentians visited a client who was in need of assistance with rent and a utility bill. The client had been working for 11 years for a mail service business. However, because of his wife’s serious illness, he had to have his hours reduced to help with her medical needs. The client fell behind on his rent and needed

our assistance for his rent and also for a utility bill. He also had a “promise to pay” from another charitable organization. St. Vincent’s was able to assist with groceries from St. Martin de Porres and with a portion of his rent and his utility bill. A referral was also made to the St. Vincent DePaul Conference Support Center in Chamblee for food assistance. The family also had their young adult daughter living with them who is a college student. We are grateful for donations from parishioners, which in turn allow us to be able to respond to the many calls received. In March, through your generous contribution of $8210, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to assist 17 families including 28 children providing in $2755 in temporary lodging, $2220 for utility and $5571 in rent. Thank you for your generosity and May God continue to bless you abundantly. The Ministry is reaching out for men and women who strive to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to our brothers and sisters in Christ. If you are interested, please email [email protected] for more details.

YOUTH FAITH FORMATION

RENOVATION UPDATES

The other morning I found this note, 2 of our

“younger” parishioners wanted to help with our

renovation! Things are indeed moving along and

your generosity is the reason it’s happening! The

big question: when will it be finished? We all need

to be patient; good things come to

people who know how to wait. (I tell

myself this every morning!)

Father Jude Michael
