Introducción de Novena de Aguinaldos en Holy Cross

Queridos fieles de nuestra familia parroquial de Holy Cross,

¡La Paz y la bendición de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo estén con

todos ustedes, y con todos los suyos!

Estamos encantados de presentarles esta Novena de

Aguinaldos, para el bien espiritual de sus corazones y de sus

familias, y les invitamos a participar con entusiasmo. La

Navidad es un tiempo de alegría y de grandes bendiciones

espirituales. Caminando con la Sagrada Familia, en los días

antes de la Navidad, les rendimos el debido honor, abrimos

nuestros hogares para compartir en sus méritos, crecemos en

la imitación de sus virtudes, y enseñamos a nuestros niños los

fundamentos de nuestra fe, en lo que puede ser su primera y

más gozosa experiencia religiosa.

Que esta Novena les ayude encontrar a la Sagrada Familia con

una intimidad profunda, y que Cristo Jesús, nacido como niño

en Belén, les bendiga a ustedes y a sus familias con una

renovada santidad.

Introducing the Christmas Novena at Holy Cross

To all the faithful of our Holy Cross parish family,

Grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all and

with your loved ones!

We are delighted to introduce this Christmas Novena for the

spiritual benefit of your hearts and families, and we invite you

to participate with enthusiasm. The Christmas season is one

of joy and of great spiritual benefit. By walking with the Holy

Family in the days leading up to Christmas, we show them

fitting honor and worship. We open our homes to share in

their merits, we grow in imitation of their virtues, and we

teach our children many essentials of the faith, through what

is perhaps their earliest and happiest religious experience.

May this Novena help you to encounter the Holy Family with

a deeper personal intimacy, and may Jesus Christ, born an

infant at Bethlehem, bless with renewed holiness each of your

families as well.

Como Rezar La Novena de Aguinaldos

La Novena se reza desde el 16 hasta el 24 de Diciembre,

usualmente por las noches cuando todos los miembros de la

familia están en casa y antes de la cena.

El Lector principal empieza persignándose por la señal de

la Cruz y diciendo una corta oración a Dios para que prepare

a toda la familia para la llegada del Niño Dios.

Continúa con “Lectura para todos Los Días”

Luego se lee la lectura específica de cada Día/Fecha

Continúa con oraciones Individuales (asignadas a los

miembros de la familia, amigos o vecinos)

o Oración A la Virgen María (Mamá, Abuela, Tía, etc.)

o Oración a San José (Leída por Papá, Abuelo, Tío, etc.)

o Oración al Niño Jesús (usualmente leída por los niños o

más jóvenes)

Aspiraciones para la venida de Jesús (“Gozos”) (Cada

Stages of the Christmas Novena The Novena is read from the 16th through to the 24th of December

usually in the evening before dinner when all family members are

home.

The first Reader starts with the Sign of the Cross and a simple

prayer asking God to prepare the family for the arrival of Baby

Jesus.

Continues with the “Prayer for Every Day.”

Then read the prayer for the specific day/date.

Continues with individual prayers. (assigned to different

family members)

o Prayer to the Blessed Virgin (Mother, Grandma, Aunt)

o Prayer to St. Joseph (Father, Grandfather, Uncle)

o The Memorare to the Child Jesus (Usually read by the

youngest at home)

Aspirations for the Coming of the Child Jesus (each family

member and other participants read one of the verses, all sing

the chorus)

End the Novena with the Sign of the Cross

All participate in singing Christmas Carols



Orígenes del Pesebre San Francisco de Asis tuvo una devoción muy especial por el Niño Jesús, y a él se le atribuye la creación de la primera escena de navidad en 1223, en

una cueva del pueblo italiano de Greco. De acuerdo con su biógrafo, San

Buenaventura, Francisco le pidió permiso al Papa Honorio III, para instalar un pesebre con heno, un burro y un buey y para presidir un servicio en el que

quería explicar a todos, como Cristo vino a este mundo en tal pobreza y

humildad. Francisco leyó el evangelio con profunda devoción y piedad, bañado en lágrimas y radiante de gozo predicó a todos los allí presentes

como el Creador del Universo había renunciado a toda su gloria para redimir

nuestros pecados en virtud de su sufrimiento e inmenso amor y Misericordia. San Buenaventura menciona en sus crónicas la aparición milagrosas del

Niño Dios en este primer pesebre, y menciona varios testigos que aseguran

haber visto a San Francisco cargando un hermoso y radiante recién nacido en sus brazos. También cuenta que muchos milagros y conversiones

ocurrieron en la gruta, inclusive, el heno preservado por los campesinos del

lugar curaba milagrosamente las enfermedades comunes del ganado.

Historia de la Novena

Al final de 1700, Fray Fernando de Jesús Larrea, un seminarista de Quito,

Ecuador, escribió “La Novena de Aguinaldos” a petición de la Señora

Clemencia de Jesús Caycedo Vélez, rectora y fundadora de la escuela católica “La Enseñanza,” en Bogotá. Una monjita de la misma escuela,

Hermana María Ignacia, le añadió los Gozos, un poema basado en las

Antífonas de Adviento. Desde este momento la novena empieza a ser rezada afuera de la escuela, en las casas de los estudiantes y vecinos. En pocas

décadas se difundió por todo el país, convirtiéndose en una tradición familiar

propagándose mayormente por el testimonio de los que alguna vez fueron invitados a participar.



Manger Origins

St. Francis of Assisi had a special devotion to the Infant Jesus and is credited with staging the first nativity scene in 1223 in a cave, in the Italian village

of Grecio. According to his biographer, St Bonaventure, Francis asked

permission of Pope Honorius III to set up a manger with hay and two live animals – an ox and a donkey – and to offer a service where he explained to

everyone how Christ came into the world in such poverty and simplicity.

Francis read the holy gospel with deep devotion and piety, bathed in tears and radiant with joy, preaching to all those in attendance how the creator of

the universe had renounced all of his glory, in order to redeem us from our

sins, through his suffering, and out of pure love and mercy.

St Bonaventure chronicles a miraculous apparition of the Infant Jesus in this

first manger, with credible eyewitnesses describing St Francis holding a beautiful, radiant new born baby in his arms. Many miracles and conversions

occurred in this grotto; even the hay, preserved by local people, miraculously

cured cattle diseases and other sicknesses.

History of the Novena

At the end of the 1700’s, Fray Fernando de Jesús Larrea, a seminarian from Quito, Ecuador, wrote a Christmas Novena (“Novena de Aguinaldos”) at the

request of Mrs. Clemencia de Jesús Caycedo Vélez, Principal and Foundress

of “La Enseñanza,” a Catholic school in Bogotá. Sister María Ignacia, a nun from the same school, modified the novena in 1800, adding the Aspirations

for the Coming of the Christ Child, a poem based on the antiphons of

Advent. The faithful in Bogota began to offer the Novena beyond the school, with students and their families praying in their homes. In a few decades, the

devotion had disseminated throughout the country, becoming a national

family faith tradition in Colombia, propagated mostly by word of mouth, by those who were at some point invited to participate.



Función de la Novena

La novena creada en una escuela para adorar al Señor y celebrar el

nacimiento de Jesús se convirtió en un acto de fé de todo un país porque

desde su inicio se volvió una tradición familiar, involucrando los padres, abuelos, familiares, amigos y vecinos, guiando a los niños y reviviendo paso

a paso la milagrosa historia de María, José, y el Niño Dios. Cada día un

relato de esta jornada es explicado en la novena, desde la anunciación a la peregrinación a Belén, desde las meditaciones de María durante su embarazo

y espera del Mesías, a su nacimiento en un humilde pesebre. Para muchos

infantes, la novena es la primera enseñanza de la fé católica: el pesebre es un medio simple pero poderoso para que los niños puedan ver, tocar y

conectarse con las figuritas del bebé Jesús, su Madre y su Padre. Los

pequeños son dirigidos a mover las figuritas durante la jornada, con la ayuda de los adultos explicándoles las duras incomodidades del viaje. Los niños

pueden visualizar el humilde nacimiento en el pobre portal rodeado de

animales, el bebé tendido en una cunita forrada con paja, cubierto con trapos, visitado y admirado por los vecinos accidentales: los pobres pastorcillos y

campesinos del lugar.

Pero la travesía es sólo la mitad de la historia. La música desempeña una

poderosa función para reforzar las oraciones, pues todos los invitados alrededor del pesebre traen instrumentos para cantar durante las aspiraciones

(Gozos) y para los villancicos al final. Esta es la culminación animada de la

novena, donde todos participan tocando guitarras y flautas, maracas y cascabeles para los bebés (y menos talentosos), haciendo de la participación

en la Novena de Aguinaldos una experiencia inolvidable de oración en

familia. Los niños están interesados en participar y descubrir cómo se desarrolla la historia en esos nueve días, aprendiendo rápidamente la trama,

los personajes y las oraciones y cantos repetidos en familia. En esa forma

son introducidos a las historias de Jesús en los evangelios y posteriormente al estudio de la biblia para su formación espiritual.

Purpose of the Novena

The Novena was created in a catholic school with the purpose of praising the

Lord and celebrating the birth of Jesus, but what made it a truly widespread

national act of faith was that it became a family tradition, involving parents and grandparents, friends and neighbors, all coaching the children and re-living step-

by-step the miraculous history of Mary, Joseph and the Infant Jesus. Every day a

different story from their journey is told in the Novena – from the Annunciation to the pilgrimage to Bethlehem, from Mary’s meditations expecting the Messiah

to the Birth of Jesus in a humble manger. For many toddlers, this is the basic

introduction to the Catholic faith. The nativity set is a simple yet powerful interactive media for children to see, touch, and connect to the characters from

the story, in the figurines of baby Jesus, his mother and his father. Children are

coached to move the figurines around in the pilgrimage. Adults help them understand the uncomfortable and poor conditions of the journey. Children can

visualize Jesus’ humble birth in a poor stable surrounded by beasts, placed in a

crib lined with hay, visited and admired by his accidental neighbors, poor shepherds and peasants.

But the plot is only half of the story. Music plays a powerful role to reinforce the

prayers as everyone, gathered around the nativity scene, brings musical

instruments to play during the Aspirations and the Christmas carols. For many, this is the best part of the Novena, where everyone joins together, singing and

playing guitars, recorders and home-made rattlers and maracas (for the toddlers

or the less talented), making participation in the Christmas Novena an unforgettable family prayer experience. Children are indeed eager and interested

to participate and to find out how the story develops in the nine days. They

quickly learn the plot, the characters, and the repetitive prayers, chants, and carols sung as a family. In this very simple way children are introduce to Jesus

stories from the Gospel and to identify the Bible as the book where God speak to

us for our spiritual formation.

Benignísimo Dios de infinita caridad, que tanto amasteis a los hombres, que les disteis en vuestro hijo la mejor prenda de vuestro amor, para que hecho hombre en las entrañas de una Virgen naciese en un pesebre para nuestra salud y remedio; yo, en nombre de todos los mortales, os doy infinitas gracias por tan soberano beneficio.

MEDITACIÓN PRIMER DÍA - 16 DE DICIEMBRE

En el principio de los tiempos el Verbo reposaba en el seno de su Padre en lo más alto de los cielos; allí era la causa, a la par que el modelo de toda la creación. En esas profundidades de una incalculable eternidad permanecía el Niño de Belén antes de que se dignara bajar a la Tierra y tomara visiblemente posesión de la gruta de Belén. Allí es donde debemos buscar

sus principios que jamás han comenzado; de allí debemos datar la genealogía de lo eterno, que no tiene antepasados y contemplar la vida de complacencia infinita que allí llevaba. La vida del Verbo eterno en el seno de su Padre era una vida maravillosa; y sin embargo, ¡misterio sublime!, busca otra morada, una mansión creada. No era porque en su mansión eterna faltase algo a su infinita felicidad, sino porque su misericordia infinita anhelaba la redención y la salvación del género humano, que sin Él no podría verificarse. El pecado de Adán había ofendido a Dios y esa ofensa infinita no podía ser condonada sino por los méritos del mismo Dios. La raza de Adán había desobedecido y merecido un castigo eterno; era pues necesario para salvarla y satisfacer su culpa, que Dios, sin dejar el cielo, tomase la forma del hombre sobre la Tierra y con la obediencia a los designios de su Padre expiase aquella desobediencia, ingratitud y rebeldía. Era necesario, en las miras de su amor, que tomase la forma, las debilidades e ignorancias inconscientes de la infancia para expiar las debilidades e ignorancias sistemáticas del hombre; que creciese para darle crecimiento espiritual; que sufriese, para enseñarle a morir a sus pasiones y a su orgullo. Y por eso el Verbo Eterno, ardiendo en deseos de salvar al hombre, resolvió hacerse hombre también y así redimir al culpable

FIRST DAY MEDITATION DECEMBER 16TH

“In the beginning was the Word … and the Word was God” (John 1:1). In the bosom of the father, in the infinite heavens, the Son of God was the cause as well as the model for all creation. In these profound depths of eternity, the Infant Jesus lied waiting before He humbled Himself to descend to earth and personally take possession of the grotto at Bethlehem. It is in heaven where we should seek His beginnings. From there we must trace the genealogy of the eternal, which has no ancestors, and contemplate the infinite perfection of the existence which the Infant Jesus experienced there. The life of the Eternal Word in the bosom of His Father was a wonderful life, and yet, in a sublime mystery, he seeks an earthly dwelling. It is not because there was something lacking in His infinite happiness; rather, his infinite mercy longed for the redemption and salvation of mankind, which, without him, could not be realized. The sin of Adam offended God, and that infinite offense could not be condoned but by the merits of God himself. The fallen children of Adam were disobedient and deserved an eternal punishment. Thus, in order to save mankind and expunge their sin, it was necessary for the Word, conforming to the will of his Father, to be made flesh and to dwell among us (John 1), in order to redeem the disobedience, the ingratitude, and the rebelliousness of humanity. Inspired by divine Love, it was necessary for the Son of God to take the human form with all its weaknesses and ignorance, and to grow as a human being, in order to show us how to grow spiritually, to embrace death, and to die to our own passions and greed. MEDITACIÓN SEGUNDO DÍA 17 DE DICIEMBRE El Verbo Eterno se halla a punto de tomar su naturaleza creada en la santa casa de Nazaret, en donde moraban María y José. Cuando la sombra del decreto divino vino a deslizarse sobre ella, María estaba sola y engolfada en la oración. Pasaba las silenciosas horas de la noche en la unión más estrecha con Dios; y mientras oraba, el Verbo tomó posesión de su morada creada.

Sin embargo, no llegó inopinadamente: antes de presentarse envió a un mensajero, que fue Arcángel San Gabriel para pedir a María de parte de Dios su consentimiento para la encarnación. El creador no quiso efectuar ese gran misterio sin la aquiescencia de su criatura. Aquel momento fue muy solemne: era potestativo en María rehusar... Con qué adorables delicias, con qué inefable complacencia aguardaría la Santísima Trinidad a que María abriese los labios y pronunciase el “Fiat” que debió ser suave melodía para sus oídos, y con el cual se conformaba su profunda humildad a la omnipotente voluntad divina. La Virgen Inmaculada ha dado su asentimiento. El arcángel ha desaparecido, Dios se ha revestido de una naturaleza creada; la voluntad eterna está cumplida y la creación completa. En las regiones del mundo angélico estallaba un júbilo inmenso, pero la Virgen María ni le oía ni le hubiera prestado atención a él. Tenía inclinada la cabeza y su alma estaba sumida en el silencio que se asemejaba al de Dios. El Verbo se había hecho carne, y aunque todavía invisible para el mundo, habitaba ya entre los hombres que su inmenso amor había venido a rescatar. No era ya sólo el Verbo Eterno; era el Niño Jesús revestido de la apariencia humana, y justificando ya el elogio que de Él han hecho todas las generaciones en llamarle el más hermoso de los hijos de los hombres. SECOND DAY MEDITATION DECEMBER 17TH The Eternal Word was about to take His created nature in the holy house of Nazareth where Mary and Joseph lived. When the shadow of the divine decree came over her, Mary was alone, engulfed in prayer. She would spend the silent hours of the night in close union with God, and while she prayed, the Word took possession of His created abode. However, he did not arrive unexpectedly. Before manifesting himself, he sent his most valued messenger, the Archangel Gabriel, to ask Mary on God’s behalf for her consent to receive the Incarnation. The Creator did not want to bring about this great mystery without the consent of His creature. That moment was very solemn: Mary had the choice to refuse... O, with what delightful joy, with what ineffable indulgence would the Holy Trinity have awaited Mary to open her lips and pronounce her Fiat. Her acceptance must have sounded as a sweet melody to his ears, while conforming her deep humility to the omnipotent divine will. The Immaculate Virgin has given her consent. The archangel has disappeared. God has taken the form of created nature; the eternal will is accomplished and creation is complete. In the celestial dimension, choirs of angels explode in joyful singing, but even if she could have been there, Mary would not have paid any attention. She kneels, with her head down, her soul in the most perfect communion with the Creator, in the solemn silence of God’s infinite peace. The Word was made flesh, albeit invisible to the world, living now inconspicuously among the humanity he came to save through his immense love and mercy. He was not only the Eternal Word any longer; he was the Infant Jesus, the Word concealed in human form, meriting the praise of all future generations who name him “the most precious of all the sons of men.” (Continue with prayer To Blessed Virgin Mary…)




MEDITACIÓN TERCER DÍA 18 DE DICIEMBRE

Así había comenzado su vida encarnada el Niño Jesús. Consideremos el alma

gloriosa y el santo cuerpo que había tomado,

adorándolos profundamente. Admirando en el primer

lugar en el alma de ese Divino Niño, consideremos en

ella la plenitud de su gracia santificadora; la de su

ciencia beatífica, por lo cual desde el primer momento

de su vida vio la divina esencia más claramente que

todo los ángeles y leyó lo pasado y lo por venir con

todos sus arcanos conocimientos. No supo nunca por

adquisición voluntaria nada que no supiese por

infusión desde el primer momento de su ser; pero Él

adoptó todas las enfermedades de nuestra naturaleza

a que dignamente podía someterse, aun cuando no

fuesen necesarias para la grande obra que debía

cumplir. Pidámosle que sus divinas facultades suplan la debilidad de las

nuestras y les den nueva energía; que su memoria nos enseñe a recordar sus

beneficios, su entendimiento a pensar en Él, su voluntad a no hacer sino lo que

Él quiere y en servicio suyo.

Del alma del Niño Jesús pasemos ahora a su cuerpo, que era un mundo de

maravillas, una obra maestra de la mano de Dios. No era, como el nuestro, una

traba para el alma; era, por el contrario, un nuevo elemento de santidad. Quiso

que fuese pequeño y débil como el de los niños, y sujeto a todas las

incomodidades de la infancia, para asemejarse más a nosotros y participar de

nuestras humillaciones. El Espíritu Santo formó ese cuerpecillo divino con tal

delicadeza y tal capacidad de sentir, que pudiese sufrir el exceso para cumplir

la grande obra de nuestra redención. La belleza de ese cuerpo del Divino Niño

fue superior a cuanto se ha imaginado jamás; la divina sangre que por sus

venas empezó a circular desde el momento de la encarnación es la que lava

todas las manchas del mundo culpable. Pidámosle que lave las nuestras en el

sacramento de la penitencia, para que el día de su Navidad nos encuentre

purificados, perdonados y dispuestos a recibirle con amor y provecho

espiritual.





THIRD DAY MEDITATION DECEMBER 18TH Thus began the incarnate life of the Child Jesus. Let us consider the glorious

soul and the holy body he took, adoring them profoundly. Admiring in the first

place the soul of the Divine Child, let us consider in it the plenitude of his

sanctifying grace, and his omniscience, by which the human understanding of

Jesus expresses his divine life and manifests all that pertains to God. “Such is

first of all the case with the intimate and immediate knowledge that the Son of

God made man has of his Father … By its union to the divine wisdom in the

person of the Word incarnate, Christ enjoyed in his human knowledge the

complete understanding of the eternal plans he had come to reveal” (CCC 473-

474).

Despite this glorious knowledge, he voluntarily adopted all the ailments of our

human nature He could surrender to, even beyond what was necessary for the

enormous task he had undertaken. We pray that his divine faculties may

supplement the weaknesses in ours; that his memory teach us to remember

his benefits, that his understanding help us think on him, that his determination

teach us to do God’s will alone.

From the soul of the Child Jesus let us now turn to His body, which was a world

of wonders, a masterpiece of God's hand. It was not a hindrance for the soul

like ours, instead, a new instrument for sainthood. He desired His body to be

that of a small and weak human child, and subject to all the hardships of a poor

infancy, in order to more nearly resemble us and

partake in our humiliations. The Holy Spirit formed

this tiny divine body with such fragility and such ability

to feel, with the sole purpose that he might suffer in

excess and accomplish the tremendous task of our

redemption. The beauty of the body of the Divine

Child was superior to anything imagined ever before,

the divine blood that began to flow through His veins,

from the moment of his Incarnation, is the same blood

that washed away all stains of this guilty world. Let us

ask Him to wash away our faults in the Sacrament of

Penance, so that the joyous day of Christmas may

find us purified, forgiven and prepared to receive Him

MEDITACIÓN CUARTO DÍA 19 DE DICIEMBRE

Desde el seno de su madre comenzó el Niño Jesús

a poner en práctica su entera sumisión a Dios, que

continuó sin la menor interrupción durante toda su

vida. Adoraba a su Eterno Padre, le amaba, se

sometía a su voluntad; aceptaba con resignación

el estado en que se hallaba conociendo toda su

debilidad, toda su humillación, todas sus

incomodidades. ¿Quién de nosotros quisiera

retroceder a un estado semejante con el pleno

goce de la razón y de la reflexión?, ¿quién pudiera

sostener a sabiendas un martirio tan prolongado,

tan penoso de todas maneras?

Por ahí entró el Divino Niño en su dolorosa y

humilde carrera; así empezó a anonadarse delante

de su Padre, a enseñarnos lo que Dios merece por parte de su criatura, a

expiar nuestro egoísmo, origen de todos nuestros pecados, y a hacernos

sentir toda la criminalidad y desórdenes del orgullo. Deseamos hacer una

verdadera oración; empecemos por formarnos de ella una exacta idea

contemplando al Niño en el seno de su madre, El Divino Niño ora y ora del

modo más excelente. No habla, no medita ni se deshace en tiernos afectos.

Su mismo estado, aceptado con la intención de honrar a Dios, es su oración

y ese estado expresa altamente todo lo que Dios merece y de qué modo

quiere ser adorado por nosotros.

Unámonos a las oraciones del Niño Dios en el seno de María; unámonos al

profundo abatimiento y sea este el primer efecto de nuestro sacrificio a Dios.

Démonos a Dios, no para ser algo como lo pretende continuamente nuestra

vanidad, sino para ser nada, para quedar enteramente consumidos y

anonadados, para renunciar a la estimación de nosotros mismos, a todo

cuidado de nuestra grandeza aunque sea espiritual, a todo movimiento de

vanagloria. Desaparezcamos a nuestros propios ojos y que Dios sólo sea

todo para nosotros.





FOURTH DAY MEDITATION DECEMBER 19TH

From the womb of his mother, the Child Jesus began to live out His

complete submission to God, which continued without interruption

throughout His entire life. He adored His eternal Father, loved him, and

submitted to his will, accepting with resignation the state of his being and

fully acknowledging all of his weaknesses, humiliations, and discomforts.

Who among us would want to regress to a similar state, having the full

intellectual capacity for reason and reflection? Who could knowingly

withstand such long martyrdom, painful in every conceivable way?

Such was the path by which the Divine Child chose to enter upon his

painful and humble calling; he remained in awe of His Father, to teach us

what God deserves from His creatures and to show us how to expiate our

pride, the lawless and disordered source of all our sins. If we want to make

a perfect prayer, let us begin to grasp the idea by meditating on the Child

inside his mother’s womb. Within Mary, the Divine Child prays in the most

perfect way: he does not speak; he does not meditate; he does not get

caught up in tender affections. He simply accepts and offers the state in

which he decided to come into the world as his prayer to honor God.

In this state, he expresses highly everything that God deserves, and how

he wants to be loved by us. Let us join with the prayers of the Holy Child

in Mary's womb. Let us unite ourselves to his deep

submission, and let this be the first effect of our

sacrifice to God. Let us give ourselves to God, not

to be what our vanity desires, but to become

nothing, so that we might remain completely

consumed in awe of the Father. Let us renounce all

earthly attachments and all greatness, even be it

spiritual greatness, so as to avoid moving in the

direction of our own pride. Let us vanish to our own

eyes and let God be all for us.

MEDITACIÓN QUINTO DÍA 20 DE DICIEMBRE Ya hemos visto la vida que llevaba el Niño Jesús en el seno de su purísima Madre; veamos hoy toda la vida que llevaba también María durante el mismo espacio de tiempo. Necesidad hoy de que nos detengamos en ella si queremos comprender, en cuanto es posible a nuestra limitada capacidad, los sublimes misterios de la encarnación y el modo como hemos de corresponder a ellos. María no cesaba de aspirar por el momento en que gozaría de esa visión beatífica terrestre; la faz de Dios encarnado. Estaba a punto de ver aquella faz humana que debía

iluminar el cielo durante toda la eternidad, Iba a leer el amor filial en aquellos mismos ojos cuyos rayos deberían esparcir para siempre la felicidad en millones de elegidos. Iba a ver aquel rostro todos los días, a todas horas, cada instante, durante muchos años. Iba a verle en la ignorancia aparente de la infancia, en los encantos particulares de la juventud y en la serenidad reflexiva de la edad madura... Haría todo lo que quisiese de aquella faz divina; podría estrecharla contra la suya con toda la libertad del amor materno; cubrir de besos los labios que deberían pronunciar la sentencia a todos los hombres; contemplarla a su gusto durante su sueño o despierta, hasta que la hubiese aprendido de memoria... ¡cuán ardientemente deseaba ese día! Tal era la expectativa de María...era inaudita en sí misma, mas no por eso

dejaba de ser el tipo magnífico de toda la vida Cristiana, no nos

contentemos con admirar a Jesús residiendo en María, sino pensemos que

en nosotros también reside por esencia, potencia y presencia. Sí, Jesús

nace continuamente en nosotros y de nosotros, por las buenas obras que

nos hace capaces de cumplir y por nuestra cooperación a la gracia; de

manera que el alma del que se halla en gracia es un seno perpetuo de

María, un Belén interior sin fin. Después de la comunión Jesús habita

dentro de nosotros, durante algunos instantes, real y sustancialmente

como Dios y como hombre, porque el mismo Niño que estaba en María

está también en el Santísimo Sacramento. ¿Qué es todo esto sino una

participación de la vida de María durante esos maravillosos meses, y una

expectativa llena de delicias como la suya?




FIFTH DAY MEDITATION DECEMBER 20TH

We've seen the life of Baby Jesus in the womb of His Most Pure Mother. Let us

see today the life that Mary led during the same period of time. We need to pause

and meditate on her existence if we want to comprehend (within the confines of

our limited intellect) and even imitate the sublime mysteries of the Incarnation.

Mary did not cease to wait in awe for the moment when she would enjoy that

beatific vision on earth: the face of God Incarnate. She was about to see that

human face that would light up heaven for all eternity. Mary was going to read

filial love in those same eyes whose rays would spread eternal happiness to

chosen millions. She was going to see that face every day, every hour, every

instant for many years. She was going to see Him in the presumed ignorance of

His infancy, the charm of His youth, and in the serenity of His mature age. As the

Blessed Mother, she would be able to do as she pleased with his divine face –

press it against her own with all the freedom of maternal love, pour kisses on

those lips that would pronounce the final sentence to all mortals, gaze upon that

face while awake or sleeping, until she had committed every inch to memory. How

wholeheartedly she desired that glorious day!

Such was Mary’s anticipation, unique and extraordinary, while at the same time a

magnificent prototype for all Christians. Let us not simply be content admiring

Jesus’ existence within Mary; let us also consider how he resides within us, as

well, in essence, power and presence. Jesus is born

continuously in and from ourselves, by the good

deeds he makes us capable of and through our

cooperation with His grace. The soul of one in grace is

always like the bosom of Mary, an internal, endless

Bethlehem. Each time we receive the Holy Eucharist,

Jesus lives inside us as God and as Man by the

mystery of transubstantiation because the same child

that was inside Mary is always within the Holy

Sacrament. Is this not but our opportunity to share the

life of Mary during those marvelous pregnancy months

and an invitation to experience a sweet expectancy

like hers?





MEDITACIÓN SEXTO DÍA 21 DE DICIEMBRE

Jesús había sido concebido en Nazaret, domicilio de San José y María, y allí era de creerse que había de nacer, según todas las probabilidades. Mas Dios lo tenía dispuesto de otra manera y los profetas habían anunciado que el Mesías nacería en Belén de Judá, ciudad de David. Para que se

cumpliese esa predicción, Dios se sirvió de un medio que no parecía tener ninguna relación con este objeto a saber: la orden dada por el emperador Augusto, de que todos los súbditos del imperio romano se empadronasen en el lugar de donde eran originarios. María y José, como descendientes que eran de David, no estaban dispensados de ir a Belén. Ni la situación de la Virgen Santísima, ni la necesidad en que estaba José del trabajo diario que les aseguraba la subsistencia, pudo eximirles de este largo y penoso viaje, en la estación más rigurosa e incómoda del año.

No ignoraba Jesús en qué lugar debía nacer, e inspira a sus padres a que se entreguen a la Providencia, y que de esta manera concurran inconscientemente a la ejecución de sus designios. Almas interiores, observad este manejo del Divino Niño, porque es el más importante de la vida spiritual: aprended que quien se haya entregado a Dios ya no ha de pertenecerse a sí mismo, ni ha de querer en cada instante sino lo que Dios quiera para él; siguiéndole ciegamente aun en las cosas exteriores, tales como el cambio de lugar donde quiera que le plazca conducirle.

Ocasión tendréis de observar esta dependencia y fidelidad inviolable en toda la vida de Jesucristo, y éste es el punto sobre el cual se han esmerado en imitarle los santos y las almas verdaderamente interiores, renunciando absolutamente a su propia voluntad. SIXTH DAY MEDITATION DECEMBER 21ST

Jesus was conceived in Nazareth, and we might have expected him to be born there, as well, in all probability. But God had a different plan; the prophets had foretold that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem of Judea, the city of David. To fulfill the prophesy, God used a method that seemed to have no connection with the objective; namely, the order given by the Emperor Caesar Augustus that all subjects of the Roman Empire should register for the census in the place of their origin. Mary and Joseph, as they were descendants of David, were mandated to go to Bethlehem. Neither the advanced pregnancy of Mary nor their dependency on Joseph’s daily labor securing their austere existence could exonerate them from this long and treacherous journey, during the coldest and harshest season of the year.

Jesus knew exactly where He was to be born, and so He inspired His parents to surrender themselves to divine providence, and in this way unknowingly fulfill God’s design. Let us observe the subtle guidance of the Divine Child, because it is the most important direction in our spiritual life. Let us learn that those who entrust themselves to the Lord, no longer belong to themselves, but only to the will of God. They follow unconditionally his designs, leaving to his control even the place where he wants us to be.

We will have a chance to observe this dependency and unbreakable fidelity throughout Jesus’ life. This is the core virtue that saints and truly introspective souls apply to imitate Jesus: to renounce absolutely to their own will.




MEDITACIÓN SÉPTIMO DÍA 22 DE DICIEMBRE

Representémonos el viaje de María y José hacia Belén, llevando consigo, aún no nacido, al Creador del universo hecho hombre. Contemplemos la humanidad y la obediencia de este Divino Niño que aunque de raza judía y habiendo amado durante siglos a su pueblo con una predilección inexplicable, obedece así a un príncipe extranjero que forma el censo de

población de su provincia, como si hubiese para El en esa circunstancia algo que le halagase, y quisiese apresurarse a aprovechar la ocasión de hacerse empadronar oficial y auténticamente como súbdito en el momento en el que venía al mundo. ¿No es extraño que la humillación, que causa tan invencible repugnancia a la criatura, parezca ser la única cosa creada que tenga atractivos para el Creador? ¿No nos enseñará la humildad de Jesús a amar esa hermosa virtud?

¡Ah...!Que llegue el momento en que aparezca el deseado de las naciones, porque todo clama por este feliz acontecimiento, El mundo, sumido en la oscuridad y el malestar, buscando y no encontrando el alivio de sus males, suspira por su Libertador. El anhelo de José, la expectativa de María, son cosas que no puede expresar el lenguaje humano. El Padre Eterno se halla, si nos es lícito emplear esta expresión, adorablemente impaciente por dar a su Hijo único al mundo, y verle ocupar su puesto entre las criaturas visibles. El Espíritu Santo arde en deseos de presentar a la luz del día esta santa humanidad tan bella que El mismo ha formado con tan especial y divino esmero. En cuando al Divino Niño, objeto de tantos anhelos, recordemos que hacia nosotros avanza lo mismo que hacia Belén. Apresuremos con nuestro deseo el momento de su llegada; purifiquemos nuestras almas para que sean su mística morada, y nuestros corazones para que sean su mansión terrenal; que nuestros actos de mortificación y desprendimiento "preparen los caminos del Señor y hagan rectos sus senderos".(Lc 3:1-6,Ma 3:3) (Seguir con Oración a la Santísima Virgen María…)




SEVENTH DAY MEDITATION DECEMBER 22ND

Let us imagine the journey of Mary and Joseph towards Bethlehem, carrying within her the incarnate, yet unborn creator of the universe. Let us reflect upon the humility and obedience of the Divine Child. He obeys a foreign prince who mandates a census in the province. It seems he deliberately finds in this circumstance a way to humble himself further, rushing to appear in the official register as a nameless unborn subject, not as the king he is, right before he is about to come into this world. Is it not bizarre that acts of humiliation, so repulsive to us creatures, seem to be the only aspect of creation that amuses the creator? Is this not Jesus teaching us to value humility as a virtue, even before he is born?

Ah! Let the time arrive when he who is desired by all nations appears in our world, for all the world longs for this glorious event. This world engulfed in darkness and evil, searches but does not find remedy for all its maladies. The longing of Joseph and the expectation of Mary are feelings that no human description can explain. The Eternal Father finds Himself, we might say, divinely impatient and eager to give his only son to the world, and to see him take his place among the visible creatures. The Holy Spirit is burning with desire to present in the light of day that beautiful holy humanity which he himself crafted with such special and divine care. We must realize, the very same Divine Infant born in Bethlehem, object of our longing, advances towards us now as well. Let our desires anticipate the moment of his arrival! Let us purify our souls to make them his mystical sanctuary! Let’s prepare our hearts to be his earthly mansion! Let our acts of abasement and abandonment “prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight” (Lk 3:1-6; Mt 3:3).





MEDITACIÓN OCTAVO DÍA 23 DE DICIEMBRE

Llegan a Belén José y María, buscando hospedaje en los mesones; pero no lo encuentran ya por hallarse todo ocupado, ya porque se les desechase a causa de su pobreza. Empero, nada puede turbar la paz interior de los que están fijos en Dios. Si José experimentaba tristeza cuando era rechazado de casa en casa, porque pensaba en María y en el Niño, se sonreía también con santa tranquilidad cuando fijaba sus miradas en su casta esposa. El niño aún no nacido se regocijaba de aquellas negativas, que eran el preludio de sus humillaciones venideras. Cada voz áspera, el ruido de cada puerta que se cerraba ante ellos, era una

dulce melodía para sus oídos: Eso era lo que había venido a buscar. El deseo de esas humillaciones era lo que había contribuido a hacerle tomar la forma humana.

¡Oh divino niño de Belén! Estos días que tantos han pasado en fiestas y diversiones o descansando muellemente en cómodas y ricas mansiones, han sido para vuestros padres un día de fatiga y vejaciones de toda clase. ¡Ay! El espíritu de Belén es el de un mundo que ha olvidado a Dios, ¡Cuántas veces no ha sido también el nuestro¡ ¿No cerramos continuamente con ruda ignorancia la puerta a los llamamientos de Dios, que nos solicita a convertirnos, o a santificarnos o a conformarnos con su voluntad? ¿No hacemos mal uso de nuestras penas, desconociendo su carácter celestial con que cada uno a su modo lo lleva grabado en si? Dios viene a nosotros muchas veces en la vida, pero no conocemos su faz. No le reconocemos hasta que nos vuelve la espalda y se aleja después de nuestra negativa.

Se pone el sol del 24 de Diciembre detrás de los tejados de Belén y sus últimos rayos doran las cimas de las rocas escarpadas que le rodean. Hombres groseros codean rudamente al Señor en las calles de aquella aldea oriental, y cierran sus puertas al ver a su madre, La bóveda de los cielos aparece purpurina por encima de aquellas colinas frecuentadas por los pastores. EIGHT DAY MEDITATION DECEMBER 23D

Joseph and Mary arrive in Bethlehem, seeking a sheltered place to rest,

but, whether the inns were full, or they were rejected because of their

poverty, nothing was to be found. And yet, nothing can disturb the inner

peace of those who are steadfast in the Lord. If Joseph felt any despair,

being rejected by inn after inn, all the while thinking Mary’s labors and the

Child, then his sadness was relieved with holy peace when he fixed his

eyes upon his chaste wife. The Child, although yet unborn, delighted in

these rejections which were a prelude of his future humiliations. Every

harsh refusal, the sound of every slammed door shut before them, were

precisely what He came seeking. The desire for those humiliations had

contributed to his choosing to take our human form.

Oh Divine Child of Bethlehem! These days, which so many of us have

spent enjoying parties or other entertainments, or relaxing comfortably in

luxurious mansions, have been, for your parents, days of discomfort and

fatigue. Ah! The spirit of Bethlehem is that of a world that has forgotten

God. How often our souls have done the same! Do we not slam the door

to God’s calling for our conversion, sanctification and submission to His

will? Do we not waste our sorrows, ignoring their celestial character for

purification? God comes to us many times throughout our lives, but we do

not recognize his face, or else, perhaps, we sense him only once he has

turned his back on us, following our repeated

refusals, and walked away.

The sun sets on December 24th behind the

rooftops of Bethlehem and its final rays gild the

tops of the steep cliffs that surround them.

Rude men roughly push the Lord away in the

streets of the eastern village, and close their

doors when they see His mother. The horizon

appears magenta above the hills where

shepherds frequently roam. Gleaming stars

emerge one after another. In a few more

hours, the Eternal Word will appear. (Continue

MEDITACIÓN NOVENO DÍA 24 DE DICIEMBRE

La noche ha cerrado del todo en las campiñas de Belén. Desechados por los hombres, y viéndose sin abrigo, María y José han salido de la inhospitalaria población y se han refugiado en una gruta que se encontraba al pie de la colina. Seguía a la Reina de los ángeles el jumento que le había servido de humilde cabalgadura durante el viaje, y en aquélla cueva hallaron un manso buey, dejado allí probablemente por alguno de los caminantes que habían ido a buscar hospedaje en la cuidad. El Divino Niño, desconocido por sus criaturas racionales, va a

tener que acudir a las bestias irracionales para que calienten con su tibio aliento la atmósfera helada de esa noche de invierno, y le manifiesten con esto y con su humilde actitud el respeto y la adoración que le había negado Belén. La rojiza linterna que José tiene en la mano ilumina tenuemente ese pobrísimo recinto, ese pesebre lleno de paja, que es figura profética de las maravillas del altar, y de la íntima y prodigiosa unión eucarística que Jesús ha de contraer con los hombres. María está en oración en medio de la gruta, y así van pasando silenciosamente las horas de esa noche llena de misterio.

Pero ha llegado la medianoche, y de repente vemos dentro de ese pesebre, poco antes vacío, al Divino Niño esperado, vaticinado, deseado durante cuatro mil años con tan inefable anhelo. A sus pies se postra su Santísima Madre, en los transportes de una adoración de la cual nada puede dar idea. José también se acerca y le rinde el homenaje con que inaugura su misterioso e imponderable oficio de padre adoptivo del Redentor de los hombres. La multitud de ángeles que desciende del cielo a contemplar esa maravilla sin par, dejan estallar su alegría y hacen vibrar en los aires las armonías de ese Gloria in Excelsis que es el eco de la adoración que se produce en torno del Altísimo, hecha perceptible por un instante a los oídos de la pobre Tierra. Convocados por ellos, vienen en tropel los pastores de la comarca a adorar al recién nacido y presentarle sus humildes ofrendas.




NINTH DAY MEDITATION DECEMBER 24TH

Night has fallen upon the fields of Bethlehem. Rejected by men and finding

themselves without shelter, Mary and Joseph have left the inhospitable

town, and have taken refuge in a grotto at the foot of a hill. The queen of

angels continues riding the donkey that served her during the journey, and

in the cave they find a gentle ox, probably left there by a pilgrim in one of

the inns.

The Divine Child, scorned by his human creatures, will have to turn to the

aid of the irrational beasts to heat with their warm breath the icy air of that

winter night. The animals show Jesus, with this humble act, the respect

and adoration that Bethlehem denied Him. The makeshift lantern which

Joseph holds casts a warm glow upon the humble surroundings. This little

manger filled with hay foreshadows the marvels of the altar, and the

intimate and formidable Eucharistic union which Jesus will seal with

mankind. Mary is deep in contemplative prayer in the middle of the grotto,

while the hours pass silently in this night filled with mysteries. But it is now

midnight, and, suddenly, we see within that manger, empty just moments

before, the long-awaited Divine Child, prophesied and coveted for four

thousand years of ineffable yearnings. At His feet the Blessed Mother is

in raptures of unutterable worship. Joseph also approaches, leans over

the Infant Jesus, and worships him; and so begins his mysterious and

paramount role of foster father of the redeemer of mankind.

The myriads of angels who descend from

heaven to contemplate that unparalleled

wonder, break out in joy and make the air

vibrate in the harmonies of the "Gloria in

Excelsis,” the same echo of adoration that takes

place around the throne of the Almighty, made

audible for an instant to the ears of poor earth.

Summoned by the angels, the shepherds of the

region rush to worship the newborn and present

their humble offerings.




Ya brilla en oriente la misteriosa estrella de Jacob, y ya se pone en

marcha hacia Belén la caravana espléndida de los Reyes Magos, que son

símbolos de la caridad, la adoración y la mortificación.

¡Oh adorado Niño! nosotros también, los que hemos hecho esta novena

para prepararnos al día de vuestra Navidad, queremos ofreceros nuestra

pobre adoración: ¡No la rechacéis! ¡Venid a nuestras almas, venid a

nuestros corazones llenos de amor! Encended en ellos la devoción a

vuestra santa infancia, no intermitente y sólo circunscrita al tiempo de

vuestra Navidad, sino siempre y en todos los tiempos; devoción que

fielmente practicada y celosamente propagada, nos conduzca a la vida

eterna, librándonos del pecado y sembrando en nosotros todas las

virtudes cristianas

towards Bethlehem for the Three Kings and their splendid caravan,

bringing their gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh, which are

symbols of charity, worship and mortification.

Oh, Child adored! We who have done this novena to prepare

ourselves for the day of your nativity, also wish to offer you our

humble worship; do not reject it: come to our souls, come to our

hearts full of love. Enflame in our hearts devotion to your holy

childhood – not only during the Christmas season, but always and

forever – devotion that, faithfully and zealously propagated, will lead

us to eternal life, freeing us from sin and sowing in us all Christian

virtues.
