FROM THE PASTOR: FOR A CHRISTIAN, IS SAINTHOOD AN OPTION OR AN OBLIGATION? #2

“For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son” (Romans 8:29).

In the Constitution on the Church, the Second Vatican Council spoke with clarity of the universal call to holiness, affirming that no one is excluded: “The classes and duties of life are many, but holiness is one — that sanctity which is cultivated by all who are moved by the Spirit of God, and who … follow the poor Christ, the humble and cross-bearing Christ in order to be worthy of being sharers in His glory” (No. 41).To be a saint is not a privilege of a few says Pope Francis, “ all of us in baptism have the inheritance of being able to become saints. Sanctity is a vocation for everyone.--All of us are called to walk in the way of sanctity, and this way has a name, a face: the face of Jesus Christ”. However, the question remains: How can we journey on the path of holiness, with the eyes on that face? How can we respond to this call? Can I do so with my own strength? The answer is clear: A holy life is not primarily the fruit of our own effort, of our actions, because it is God’s doing as we read from the prophet; “He touched my mouth with it and said, "Behold, this has touched your lips; and your iniquity is taken away and your sin is forgiven."(Isaiah 6:7). Only the Lord makes us saints, and the action of the Holy Spirit who encourages us from within; it is the life itself of the Risen Christ, which has been communicated to us and which transforms us. To say it again according to Vatican Council II: “The followers of Christ are called by God, not because of their works, but according to His own purpose and grace. They are justified in the Lord Jesus, because in the baptism of faith they truly become sons of God and sharers in the divine nature. In this way they are really made holy. Then too, by God’s gift, they must hold on to and complete in their lives this holiness they have received” (Constitution on the Church, 40). If your life’s goal is to love and serve God in this life and spend eternity with Him in the next one, then study the lives of the saints. Becoming holy is the calling of every Christian believer because to become holy is to become like Jesus. The path to holiness is well-known and well-traveled. Contrary to Hollywood, it’s not a secret that only a few can know or understand. The problem is that most people are looking in the wrong places. If you want to follow Jesus, read the Gospels and the lives of His greatest followers, the saints. The saints are no different from you and me in all things but one: they never gave up. Virtuous and sinful, faithful and doubting, they gave their lives to Christ, messed it up, and turned to Him again and again and again. Sainthood doesn’t happen in an instantaneous thunderclap of holiness. It’s a journey with Jesus and a path well-trodden by the saints who have gone before us. (To be continued---).

33rd. SUNDAY SNAPSHOT. JOHN: I WISH JESUS WOULD COME SOONER THAN LATER. MARY: DON’T TELL ME YOU ARE DISGUSTED BEYOND ENDURENCE TO LIVE! JOHN: THE WORLD FEELS AS IF WE ARE IN THE FIRST CENTURY OF CHRISTIANITY, PERSECUTIONS FROM WITHIN AND PERSECUTION FROM WITHOUT. ISN’T RELIGIOUS FREEDOM A MOCKERY? MARY: WAIT A MINUTE, PERSECUTION IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE FOLLOWERS OF JESUS TO GIVE TESTIMONY AND PERSECUTION IS AN OCCASION FOR PERSEVERANCE THAT LEADS TO SALVATION. JOHN: I CAN SEE SATAN NOT ONLY OPPOSES GOD’S RULE, BUT ALSO SEEKS TO DESTROY ALL WHO OBEY GOD. MARY: JESUS TELLS HIS DESCIPLES THAT IF THEY ENDURE TO THE END THEY WILL GAIN THEIR LIVES. WE MUST ENDURE AND HOPE- REMEMBER.
