News from the Learning Community

Bradford Primary School

On Monday 2nd

October Class 1 went on an Autumn Walk around the country lanes of the school. They learnt

about the different items growing in the hedgerows, the trees that grow around the school and collected lots of

autumn leaves to bring back to school. Thanks goes to Flora and Stanley’s Dad, Mark, for his help and knowledge

during the walk.

Parents and family members were invited into school Monday 2nd

October to

join the children for a social lunch. After lunch the adults were able to look at

the children’s work in their classrooms or join them outside to take part in some

playground games. A very enjoyable lunch time was had by everyone.

The school’s annual Harvest Festival was held on the afternoon of Tuesday 3rd

October. Class 1 sang

‘Cauliflowers fluffy and cabbages green’ with the children in Class 2 reading a short play about ‘Where or Bread

comes from’. Donations were given to Bideford Foodbank who support this area. A big thank you goes to

Reverend Kathy Roberts, Morag Lobley and all the ladies from the church for all their help and to FOBs who

provided lovely refreshments at the end of the service.

Mrs Williams, Head of School On Monday 2nd October we had our Open Day. As ever, I was proud to show prospective students, parents and members of our community our school and I thank them for giving up their time to attend.

In preparation, for our Open Day I have re-written the front page of our prospectus, which I share with you below.

Holsworthy Community College

‘Inspiring us to be the best that we can be!’

Welcome! Thank you for taking an interest in our school. We are a small, rural secondary school in North Devon, in the market town of Holsworthy. We have many strengths: our family feel, excellent pastoral support, strong and passionate teachers as well as great students, who are our best advocates and assets! We are proud to be part of the Holsworthy Area Federation which includes Holsworthy Community College, Bridgerule, Bradford and Black Torrington Primary schools. We are also looking forward to becoming part of the Dartmoor Multi Academy Trust. This will allow us to build stronger links with the three other secondary colleges and ten primary schools, as well as allow us to work more closely with the Dartmoor Teaching School Alliance.

We are the size of a four form entry school, but for some subjects and groups we stretch to five classes. Our site includes specialist and impressive twenty first century technology rooms and Science laboratories as well as good sized classrooms and a canteen which receives 100% positive feedback from all that use it. You can order and pay for food via our School Comms system which means that we can operate a cashless system.

Our staff are fantastic! I am fortunate to lead a dedicated, caring and knowledgeable team, who will care for and inspire your child. We all value education and want to help your child become the best that they can be. My Leadership Team support, develop and lead our teaching staff and support staff. Our Heads of Faculty, are the driving force of learning and our Heads of Key Stage and Heads of House are the pillars of support for your child both pastorally and academically. We operate a vertical mentoring system which is part of our House structure. Teachers are helped by our wonderful support staff. Students with additional needs are assisted by our SENCo and team of teaching assistants who offer a range of interventions to enable our students to succeed. Our Governing Body are a knowledgeable, committed and driven group who meet most weeks to discuss and evaluate our Federation’s needs and progress.

Our results are a cumulative effort of five years of hard work, building upon the education that our primary feeder schools provide. In 2017 over 78% of our students received a pass 9-4 at GCSE English and 70% gained a pass 9-4 in GCSE Maths, with 63% of our students gaining the 9-4 pass in both of these subjects. Our most able students are stretched, evidenced by three students gaining the coveted GCSE 9s in Maths and two students gaining this highest of grades in English Language. Science is always a strength at HCC and 100% of students taking Triple Science gained A*-C, with an impressive 58% achieving an A/A* in Physics giving an indication of the quality. 85% A*-C for one GCSE and 78% A*-C for two GCSEs; over 85 A* and A grades were achieved by our students in Science in 2017. Over 83% of students gained GCSE French A*-C, with 76% of students gaining A*-C in GCSE German.

Black Torrington On Wednesday morning, Black Torrington Primary School held their Harvest Festival at St Mary's Church. The service was filed with hymns, as well as poems and readings which the children had learned and presented to the congregation. They had all created harvest-themed art work, with every child making and decorating a salt dough leaf, and Class One made apple trees using prints of real apples! Thank you to all those who were part of the congregation and who donated goods. One parent, Mrs Sarah Leach, kindly baked and donated a harvest loaf. All contributions of dry goods will be going to the Bideford Food Bank.

Humanities is an area where our Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural awareness is always developing and this can be demonstrated through the many residential experiences that are offered to our students. These have included trips to Poland and the concentration camps, London to study the Crime and Punishment unit with visits to the Tower of London as well as the annual excursion to the Belgium battlefields. We also carry out many day visits to sites of local interest including trips to Dartmoor, Geographical surveys on our beaches, as well as opportunities to visit theatres, museums and national attractions such as Plymouth National Aquarium. A number of these opportunities take place during our four Collapsed Curriculum days, when we cease the regular timetable and provide extra-curricular activities for all of our students.

Physical Education is a huge part of life at HCC and it is fantastic when our small college competes against much larger schools and win! This was epitomized with last years’ Year 11 Football team who won the County Cup and got to the semi-final of the national Small Schools Cup. Each week, our students are given opportunities to compete and perform in a variety of sports and practices take place both during lunchtimes and after school during our busy schedule. In order to see the breadth and depth of life at Holsworthy Community College, I urge you to read our weekly newsletter called ‘View from the Bridge’ which contains information about our working week and can be found on our website. You will also see examples of the outstanding art work that our students produce, both here and all around our school site. Thank you for taking the time to read this information, if you would like further guidance to be provided, outside of our prospectus, please do not hesitate to contact us. Mrs Sam Williams, Head of School We had our annual Holsworthy Area Federation Safeguarding and Extremism and Radicalisation: Prevent training. Hearing the many harrowing stories, the importance of this regular training is apparent to everyone. We are hoping that this example of shared Continuing Professional Development will be extended between us and our Federation. This week has also involved our School Improvement Partner, John Shears visiting us on Wednesday. Advice has been shared in line with the priorities that were published previously. Governors met for a Standards and Curriculum meeting, which renewed a variety of different policies as well as having Heads of Faculty report back relating to our GCSE results. Petroc have also been visiting our students through their Life Skills lessons and our Year 11 students will be visiting Okehampton College's Careers Fair on Wednesday 18th October. It is Okehampton's Post 16 Open Evening on Thursday 12th October from 5pm until 7.30pm, with a talk at 6.30pm by the Post 16 Leader, Neil Sproats. The purpose of this evening is for students to be able to talk to the subject teachers and answer any questions that they may have. Once students have a clear vision and pathway to walk down, their motivation towards their GCSEs becomes far more concrete and the importance of reaching their target grades has a solid purpose. Next week, we have two visits planned. Tom Winskill will be conducting a Pupil Premium review on Thursday 12th October and also Faith Jarrett will be discussing our GCSE outcomes. Following on from this on Friday 13th October we will also be joined by Moira Marder the CEO from the Ted Wragg Trust and Daryll Chapman, Executive Principal, from Okehampton College who will be exploring and then supporting us relating to our school improvement. I have also continued to attend meetings related to the Multi Academy Trust and the focus was on how to address school improvement. It is always so refreshing to talk with other schools to share best practice and look for ways to support each other. Our Leadership Team visited Okehampton on Thursday, which allowed us to meet our counter parts. I believe that this will be one of the significant benefits that HCC will gain if we move into the MAT. I hope that you have a good weekend, I shall be watching the England Netball players, which can be found on the BBC iplayer or on the BBC Sport Channel, a great opportunity for the many netball players that we have at HCC, to watch international fixtures. I hope you have had a good week and enjoy the weekend with your family.

Anyone for Cricket?

I have been playing for Holsworthy Mens Cricket Team for the last 2 seasons. We play on a Saturday in the Cornwall League and on a Sunday in the North Devon League.

This season we had a really successful season. We came runners up in the North Devon League and we were champions and undefeated in the Cornwall League.

As champions we went on to play in the Cornwall County Cup Final on Sunday 17th September at Tintagel v St Buryan.

The weather was lovely, we lost the toss so had to field first. The second and third batters for the opposition had a really good innings and after a couple of missed catches were eventually caught out. St Buryan went on to bat the rest of the 46 overs and I fielded a fine catch. The final score for St Buryan was 259-9.

That left us in with a mountain to climb but we were confident as we had a couple of particularly hefty hitters! We started off slow and steady but when our Captain came into bat things changed. It was so close we found we needed 49 runs off of 36 balls - not possible I hear you say - but with Walts in batting anything is possible! Unfortunately Ryan was ran out after trying to sneak an extra run and that meant that we ended up 10 runs short. Our final score 249-6.

Wow, what an exciting game it was. I am truly honoured that I am not only part of a league winning side but that at 15 years old I played my first County Cup Mens Cricket Final.

Holsworthy Cricket Club are a great club who welcome young players in their side I have been playing for two seasons now. If you want to play some great cricket next season, keep fit during the summer and have some fun then telephone Dave Gerry on 07811350383.

Year 8 Football Win!

On Thursday 28th September the Year 8 football team, hosted a match against Bude.

To start the game it was end to end football, which was tough. A few minutes in, Holsworthy scored the opening goal to make it 1-0 from Adam, who took it around the goalie and finished.

Shortly after that Bude equalised. It was still tense and end to end. Bude scored again to make it 2-1. Then it was our turn to equalise with Jake scoring an absolute screamer from a free kick inside our own half! Halftime finished 2-2 and it was all to play for.

The second half started with Bude having most of the possession, but Holsworthy defended well. Halfway into the second half Holsworthy were on the counter attack, which was finished amazingly by George. The game went on with a few missed opportunities, then with one minute to go Holsworthy had possession, and with a brilliant ball from George into the box, Reece brought it around the keeper and tapped it in to make it 4-2 full time.

Year 7 First Football Tournament On Wednesday 27th September we went to Ashbury Hotel and Manor for our first tournament in Year 7. Our first game was against Tavistock B team. Elliot finished our first chance away then not long after he slotted the ball under the keeper. That game finished 2-0.

We had a two game break and then we had to play Dawlish in our second game. It was a good game with high balls coming over, but the other team intercepted most of them. We played great football, which led to Elliot scoring, then a little bit later Travis made a run and he placed it well past the keeper, which made it 2:0.

Our third game we won 1-0, with George and Natan still not conceding.

In the fourth game we played Okehampton. We needed a victory to get guaranteed placement and they scored not long after kick off. Natan conceded his first goal of the tournament. We were sloppy at the back, but Isaac and Ethan made some great clearances. We eventually got our goal back when Isaac crossed it in, hitting Elliot's knees. Elliot got another chance, but he slipped as the Astro was slippy after the rain. It ended 1-1.

We then played Tiverton to secure a place in the semi-finals. We again went behind but got another goal by Elliot then another goal by George smashed low and hard into the bottom corner from outside the box, which meant we went to the semi-finals.

To get to the semi finals was a great achievement. We were one step closer to the final, but we had to beat Bude. It was a tough game with both teams looking to score, but no one did so it came to extra time. We were dominating until they went on the counter attack, which led to a goal. We were so unlucky to get knocked out.

We played Tiverton in the third and fourth place play off. We put in so much effort and energy in the semis, which left us losing 2-1, with Isaac getting our only goal.

We would like to thank Mr Watkins for taking us there and Okehampton for inviting us to the tournament.

Elliott

The Holsworthy B Team were in a tough group alongside Keviccs, Bude and the eventual overall winners Tavistock. Holsworthy had two strong goalkeepers in Josh and Tyrese ,who made many several good saves. We struggled a bit in attack and defence and unfortunately conceded a lot of goals.

We did manage to score one goal, by me, which made us all very happy. We played 5 group games and unfortunately lost all of them but we battled very hard in all the matches. We tried our best and we will see how well Holsworthy B team can improve. We all enjoyed the day and learnt a lot from some good players. Caleb Fowler

Year 7 Netball Tournament On Tuesday 3rd October two Year 7 netball teams left school at 10.30am to attend a 7 a side tournament in Bude.

Once we got there we began to get ready. Both teams sorted out their positions with the A team allocating GK to Rebecca Davey, GD—Katie Martyn, WD—Lily Horsborough/Poppy Bryant, C—Jess Hart, WA—Ellen Bellew, GA—Amy Poole, GS—Jess Lovejoy.

To warm up we ran two laps around the netball court, did a few stretches and set-up some shooting drills and a game of possession.

The A team began with a good start, winning our first game against Callington. Amy Poole got Players’ Player of the Match after some excellent shooting.

The next two games we played we beat Camelford and Looe. Again, Players’ Player was awarded to Amy in both games.

The fourth and fifth games we also won. These were against Bude ‘B’ (which was quite a tight game) and Liskeard (winning 9-0). Players’ Player for these matches were Lily Horsborough and Jess Lovejoy.

We topped our groups, with these 5 wins putting us through to play the 1st placed teams from the other 2 groups. We now had to battle for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the tournament.

Firstly we played St Joseph’s, which was our most challenging game of the tournament. For 6 minutes we battled hard, but despite our best efforts, we unfortunately lost 3-0. We now had no chance of placing 1st, however we could still play for 2nd place.

We then played our final match against Wadebridge. This was a very tight match and ended as a draw (0-0) with both teams defending well. With time running short, both teams decided to call it a draw and be joint runner-up in the tournament. The Players’ Play of this match was Katie Martyn.

Overall, it was a great day!

Katie Martyn

Holsworthy Year 7 A and B teams travelled to Bude to take part in a Year 7 netball tournament. There were 18 teams in total, split into 3 groups of 6.

Holsworthy B team were in group 1 and got off to a fantastic start, winning the first game 8-0 against Torpoint. There was some great shooting from Caitlin, Cora and Tailea in this match. The next match was much tougher against Bude A team and despite our best efforts, we lost 4-1. The next match was Wadebridge and we were unfortunate to lose this 4-3. We then played against Launceston and drew this match, before our final game against Looe which we won 1-0. The B team came 3

rd

overall in their group narrowly missing out on second spot to qualify for the final round.

Question 2 of 20:

Which international company has recently been denied a licence to

operate in London?

a. Starbucks

b. Uber

c. Airbnb

Answer

b. Uber - Transport for London has concluded the ride-hailing

app firm was not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator

licence. Uber's approach and conduct demonstrated a lack of

corporate responsibility which could have potential public safety

and security implications, it said. Uber is likely to appeal the

decision, and a large petition from users has already gained over

500,000 signatures.

British Values—Indigo Haynes, DMYP Reporting Back

Hello! In the last week, several events have happened worldwide which question your morals. The first would be the Catalan referendum.

This weekend, a region of Spain called Catalonia attempted to have a referendum to gain independence. The Spanish government deemed the referendum illegal, and sent in riot police to prevent people from voting. They violently beat people who were just trying to vote.

This makes me question whether we are really “civilised”. If countries are willing to beat their own people into submission, why are we still friends with them? Why aren’t we stopping them, punishing them? So much for democracy.

In America, there was a mass shooting. One man was able to injure 500 people who were enjoying a music festival in Las Vegas, and kill over 50. This is the exact reason why there should be much tighter regulations on guns in America, to prevent people from killing so many innocents. I believe that there’s no point in guns if they kill more people than they save.

I hope that this weekend, less horrible things happen.

Prince’s Teaching Institute The Science department is very proud to have achieved the Prince’s Teaching Institute Mark this year. The mark is awarded for undertaking a research project into teaching and learning within your school.

The project the Science department have been undertaking has been based on revision techniques throughout the key stages. The year 2016/17 focused on teaching specific revision techniques to year 7 so that they could develop their own revision toolkit which could be used in later years. We found a significant improvement in this year’s results compared to last year’s, which was encouraging.

At the end of the year I was required to present my findings to other subject teachers in London at the Prince’s Teaching Institute Subject day, and also share my experience of carrying out the project, including any barriers we faced along the way.

The project will continue for the next two years, focusing on key stage 4, which will put more emphasis on students themselves to share their own revision resources and techniques. We look forward to seeing the impact this will have on their exam results.

Art Pics of the Week Some of Year 10 have been working on the main elements in art; colour, line, tone, shape, form and texture. This week began with the study of 'LINE'.

Students explored different ways of creating line and we had some exciting outcomes.

They firstly worked collaboratively on a group piece using paint and a brush on a large scale.

Then they worked on a very tiny scale individually developing lines from prior knowledge.

Lastly they experimented with block printing to create a sketchbook page showing line.

Next week we will look at how other artists use line in their work.

Mrs Bloxham

Year 9 Pop Art Over the last few weeks students in Year 9 Art have been starting their Pop art projects. They have looked at the art style from the 1950s and have learned about the word Pop standing for popular. Artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein have been used to understand the style and message behind the work. Students found it funny that Warhol described his large soup can art work as "deeply superficial" after art critics at the time called him superficial.

This is a term long project and we look forward to more work on this iconic style of art.

“We have learnt about Pop art and done drawings of popular things like chocolate bars and comic strips and now we

are doing a double page of Pop art, drawing pictures and writing about what it is, also who creates it.” Cain Year 9.

“We have been using different textures and tones to draw sweets and sweet wrappers. Today we did 30 second drawing and 1 minute drawing, 3 minutes, 1 minute continuous line and 1 minute drawing a toffee from memory. We finished with a 10 minute page size drawing of a sweet in line only. I liked having something to draw from in front of me. I have loved the freedom to create my Pop art double page where I have worked on presenting it in the art style.”

Bradleigh Tape, Year 9.
