Overview of a Patented BreakthroughIn Real Time Communications

In This Presentation We Will Cover -In This Presentation We Will Cover -

• The real “digital divide”: Useful asynchronous communication vs. synchronous silliness.

• The Problem: Today’s real time interfaces dumb-down thought and conversation.

• The Clue: Sophisticated conversation tools that we humans all use in real life. None ever made it online!

• The Solution: Holocene’s broad range of patented and fundamental tools can revolutionize online communication, letting hosts offer new, attractive services to visitors, users, clients, collaborators.

• Immediate Market Opportunities: Only IP-protected Holocene can replace or transform online chat, Instant Messaging (IM), avatar worlds, meeting-ware, collaboration-ware, user-generated gaming and “augmented reality” overlays upon real world locales.

Other Presentations -Other Presentations -• The Dismal Competition: Tour today’s state-of-the-art in “chat,” avatar worlds, VR, “myWorld” sites, meeting-ware, collaboration-ware… fields where “competitors” are making billions with inferior products.

• Our Prototype: Glimpse the early proof-of-concept - already functional! And sign up for a demo.

Synchronous Realm Chat & Instant Messaging interactive gaming virtual worlds avataring telepresence

Content provider and recipient are present at the same time.

• Despite overlap, these realms involve different expectations, customers, discourse.• Both realms should benefit from advances in social networking.• Some interactions, like instant Messaging have both synchronous and asynchronous traits. Crippled by worst combination.• High-end collaboration & “meeting-ware”point to a future when synchronous presence will be attractive to adults.• Just because high-quality is “allowed” doesn’t guarantee it happens. Still, shouldn’t quality be possible?

Notes:

Primitive interfaces dumb-down discourse to Primitive interfaces dumb-down discourse to the level of flirting, grunts, mayhem… the level of flirting, grunts, mayhem…

Almost useless to serious people!Almost useless to serious people!

This realm needs utter transformation!Holocene improves this realm.

Page 4: Holocene intro1

Contemporary “chat” - dreadful! Still uses 1960s format!

Millions of teens on Facebook type billions of words! Immense market!

But shallow… hopeless for grownup conversation, work or collaboration.

Yes, some like it shallow. But must shallowness be a law of cyberspace?

“Avatar Worlds” like There and Second Life are worse! Limit interaction to grunt flirtation, violence and “ROFL.”

Billions are spent on fine rendering. Cool stuff!

But meanwhile, tools to usefully exchange thoughts and information have languished, undeveloped.

Can we do better? Can we do better?

Summary: Summary: The dismal competition…The dismal competition…

(Also see presentation #2: “the state-of the-art.”)(Also see presentation #2: “the state-of the-art.”)

Page 5: Holocene intro1

A Close-up Look: Second Life - a company worth billions - sells “realms” to businesses, to link with employees, partners, customers. Only where is the communication and creative exchange that businesses (and sober users) want?

Down here, in the lower left. See it? The same scroll/interrupting "chat” used on teletypes back in the 1970s. Thoughts limited to one sentence, at best. Yet, nobody considered this part - actual information exchange - to be worth improving. Till now.

Page 6: Holocene intro1

The exception:The exception:“Meeting-ware” delivers sophisticated real-time

(synchronous) interaction… at a price…Advantages:• Some advanced teleconferences allow file exchange/comparison.• Collaboration assistance.• information services and some analytic tools in real time.• Mid-price systems like Groove can connect adults in useful ways.

Yet there are countless faults / deficiencies• Emphasis on elites ignores the trend toward small screens, mobility.• Even high end products ignore lessons from real life / human nature.• Vast market for real time conversation/collaboration goes un-tapped.

Even stationary meetings need efficient tools, to use scarce resources: time, screen space & human attention.Shall we take a hint from real life?real life?

Page 7: Holocene intro1

How far back do discourse talents go? To ancient folk who argued, chatted and planned, learning skills to get the most out of face-to-face interaction…

The “attention economy” isn’t new! Our ancestors

practiced selective focus by -

- adjusting distance

- turning to or away from others

- heeding reputation

- favoring what’s interesting

- remembering what’s important

- adopting rules of courtesy

- keeping a train of thought

- staying alert for surprise.

Discourse & Conversation -Cro-Magnon Style!

Discourse depends on attention, selective focus, prioritization, and countless mental skills we take for granted.

Page 8: Holocene intro1

Few of these basic skills have usefully arrived onscreen.

Even “social network” designers ignore basics.

We still do all of those things! We still do all of those things!

High priority attention goes to people you chose to face or get close to.

We adjust attention by criteria - topic, time, reputation (global /personal), direction, distance.

Least attention paid to those who are away/behind.

Yet, you notice if folks mention your name - or other hot words - even far away!

We divide attention, shift tracks, adapt new priorities.

We track the “gist” of conversation, but can also make careful notes.

And this is just a cocktail party! Inborn attention-agility skyrockets when matters seem important.

Time has effects, but doesn’t lobotomize! Casual talk doesn’t have to be shallow.

Rules of courtesy matter . There are consequences to reputation!

Page 9: Holocene intro1

Why Have Designers Neglected all this? Why Have Designers Neglected all this?Fads and “honey pot” concepts draw attention &investment.

Gaudy virtual worlds AvatarsSocial networking GamesWeb exhibitionism Flirtation

These are fine! But designers assume that synchronous users will never want more.

In fact, some real-time users may want to work or converse at a higher level than “ROFL.”

Trait #5: REPUTATION affects priority - global (scored by host or peers) or user choice.

Global rep is low

Personal score is high(adjusted by slider)

Reputation systems are of hot interest (e.g. Netflix ratings contest) and huge commercial value. Systems that smoothly pass rep data back and forth from personal to global will be far more subtle and effective than look-down or opt-in methods.

Hosts can either let users see reps or keep hidden. Third party pseudonymity can allow mask-personas to have high rep.

Users might even apply instant rep-style feedback to particular statements or products or adverts in real time.

Reputation scores can also affect discourse geometries, e.g. automatic arenas, and distance sensitivity of keyword alerts.

Hosts should be free to creatively mix/max traits and attributes, competing for user attention.

This person is farther away but high in both reputation scores. Priority enhanced.

Here verbiage is deliberately shown spilling out of the text box, illustrating the scrolling problem. How to maintain the “gist” of what other people say, when older statements rapidly vanish out the top? Can online discourse track earlier statements?

Can a system help detect what’s urgent, take gist notes, sift noise?Even in faraway speech?

Separating each speaker only partly solves the “dilemma of “chat.” We must also provide tools for smart transcripting.

We solve all of these problems in real life conversation!Shouldn’t online conversation spaces aid discourse, as well?

How to appreciate & “memorize” useful info, while remaining compact?

United States Patent Application 20030001890 United States Patent No: 7,124,372 January 2, 2003 - Filed: June 12, 2002 Date of Issuance: October 17, 2006

Interactive communication between a plurality of usersInventor: Brin, G. David

Abstract

A novel system, method, and computer program for interactive communication among a plurality of users. The invention, called Holocene Conversation Mode ("HCM"), takes advantage of the observation that human beings have developed or utilize a number of real-world characteristics to participate in, perceive, control, and glean subtleties from conversations. These characteristics include proximity and orientation of a listener to other speakers, memory ageing, emphasis by a speaker, relative importance of a speaker to a listener, reputation of a speaker, and the unique human ability to "filter" words of special interest to a listener from overheard conversations. HCM includes a suite of techniques, including spatial and content compression as a function of some of such characteristics, that can be implemented in various combinations in computer software. HCM supports other forms of user interaction, such as allowing a user to give or send an object to another user, or to allow a user to take an object from another user. In addition, HCM supports "kiosks", in which users can interact with non human resources in the context of a host-defined environment.
