Shalom my Agudath Achim brothers and sisters !!! Well….our long cold

Winter is over and as we move into Spring, we can all look forward to the

trees in bloom, the start of baseball season and my favorite holiday of the

Jewish calendar, Pesach ( Passover ). And we do it well here at Agudath

Achim. Our congregational second night seder was wonderful and highly

educational, as always…..Todah Rabah to Cantor Schwartz and to those

who prepared a sumptuous feast for everyone. Passover is all about passing

on the traditions of the holiday from one generation to the next, to teach

our children and educate our community…..a job well done.

And speaking of education and a job well done, I am pleased to tell you

about two excellent educational programs that Congregation Agudath

Achim is offering this Spring. First, our ongoing class in Pirkei Avot ( The

Wisdom of the Fathers ), taught by Dr. Bruce Herniter, every Saturday,

after Shabbat morning services. The discussion is lively and engaging, so

please consider joining us and contributing some of your wisdom.

The second class we are presenting is Jewish 101, open to the community

at large, to learn the basics of Jewish history, culture and traditions. Our

first class was held in March and will continue on Wednesday April 18 at

7 PM in the AA library. The class is being taught by lay members of our

congregation and if you would be interested in teaching a class please

let me know, so we can schedule you in the coming months.

Education is a core Jewish value that is absolutely critical to the

continuation of The Jewish people around the world and right here in

our little congregation in Shreveport, La. As we move forward together,

    Kadima B’yachad.

REMINDER: April Board Meeting is on Monday, April 2.

(NOT on the 2nd Monday as usual.)

    Hazzan’s Notes

    Jewish Music of Leonard Bernstein

The Jewish journey of Leonard Bernstein began a generation earlier when his father Samuel

settled in Boston around 1912, after immigrating from the Ukraine. Leonard was born in 1918,

and he grew up attending a large Conservative synagogue named Mishkan Tefila. There was

a Rabbi and a Cantor, an organ, and a choir led by a professional Music Director from Vienna.

Bernstein was profoundly influenced by the music he learned from this Music Director, named

Solomon Braslavsky. It was based on traditional European synagogue music, yet considered

to be forward-looking in the 1920's, because of Braslavky's innovative musical arrangements.

Leonard served as a student Cantor for the Youth Service, he studied piano and organ as a

youth, and he learned aspects of public speaking from the Rabbi of Mishkan Tefila. Between

the Jewish home environment provided by his family and the influence of Jewish music in this

large Boston synagogue, Bernstein went on to Harvard firmly grounded in his Jewish identity.

Throughout Leonard's entire career as a composer, conductor, music educator, pianist, and

social activist, this Jewish identity was expressed in subtle and overt ways through his music.

Here is just a partial list of his compositions that are either entirely Jewish, or include musical

material taken from the world of synagogue music and Hebrew religious texts.

Bernstein composed settings of at least two prayers from the Shabbat evening service – the

Hashkiveinu prayer for protection, and the closing Yigdal prayer. He composed a setting of

the Dybbuk, and Simchu Na is his exciting choral arrangement of an Israeli dance melody.

Chichester Psalms is the work that was sung with our Shreveport Symphony in March. It

was commissioned by Chichester Abbey in England in 1965, and it presents three movements

of exciting and moving choral music for Psalms 100, 23, 2, 131, and a verse of Psalm 133.

Bernstein's Symphony #1 is entitled the Jeremiah Symphony, and all three movements quote

Hebrew Biblical music verbatim. The 2nd Movement is based on the chant of our Prophets,

using exact Haftarah Trope, while the 3rd Movement is based on the chant of Lamentations.

His Symphony #3 is the Kaddish Symphony, using the Aramaic text of Kaddish and its English

translation from our liturgy. It presents a theological challenge to God, based on the Yiddish

song in which a Rabbi chastises God for allowing misfortunes that befall Jewish communities.

Bernstein's Broadway musicals include Candide and West Side Story, both of which have the

sound of the Shofar in their music. He often wrote in 7/8 time (Pa da, Pa, da, Pa da da), with

this syncopation in his Symphonic music (including Chichester) and in his Broadway musicals.
