promises to be a lot of
fun.
Wishing you a lovely

Dear Parents,
The educational trips con-
tinued this week with a
trip to Layer Marney for
the Year 3s as part of
their project on the Tu-
dors, and for the Year 7s,
who visited the National
Gallery and a plastics
factory en route to learn
more about putting design
into production. Our
thanks to Mr & Mrs
Pullum who facilitated
this excellent experience
for the children.
Years 6 and 1 joined me
at The Orchard this week
for their tea and picnic
lunch respectively. The
weather was definitely
kinder to the Year 1s who
managed to share the gar-
den with me and my
guinea pigs rather than
squeeze into my living
room as the Year 6s had
to! Hopefully both year
groups enjoyed it as much
as I did.
Thank you to those who
attended my presentation
on the Holmwood House
Certificate last week.
Hopefully it has enabled
you to better understand
the direction the school is
going in terms of assess-
ment and entry processes
to senior schools. If any-
one has any further ques-
tions regarding the process
then do please arrange a
time to come
to see me.
We have our summer
Taster Morning tomorrow
for children looking to join
the Reception classes
either this September or in
the next couple of years.
These events are always a
lot of fun. My thanks go to
all the staff who put in so
much effort to plan and
organise the sessions
We would like to let parents know that
there is a locked postal box in the
front hall for any correspondence.
However, for any cheque or cash
transactions we would request that
you give this to a member of the front
office staff who will provide you with
a receipt.
Useful revision guidance and advice
for upcoming tests and exams can be
found on the school website, together
with exam timetables on the Revision
page under the Academic tab.

Mrs Thorpe gave the notices. We then read out the stars for the week. We had some
amazing totals, so well done everyone. Mrs Wild and Mrs Apperley’s tutor groups
won.
We then introduced our replacement Sharky, Delphine the dolphin.
For our activity we had a quiz and if you got the answer right then you could have a go
at a mini ten pin bowling set.
Mrs Thorpe made a riddle for us to guess. The answer was that it was National Limer-
ick Day!

AIR Miss Godman started our Element meeting with a demonstration of resourcefulness in the style
of a pig trying to get a box of biscuits in various different ways.
Then we sang Happy birthday to James P as he will be 10 on Saturday.
Star awards winners of the week were Mme Aravinthan’s tutor group. Well done everyone!
We then played a game of sleeping lions, which lots of people were very good at!
Eddie S
In our Element meeting this week we had limericks because it was National Limerick Day!
We said happy birthday to Julia K and William W who both had birthdays this week.
The stars of the week were Noah T and Theo L’E.
For our entertainment we played a French game a bit like “duck, duck, goose”, it was great fun.
The quote of the week was from Malcolm X:
“You can’t separate peace from freedom because no one can be at peace
unless he has his freedom”.

YEAR 3 VISIT TO LAYE R MARNEY TOWER . . .
Page 4 Friday 13 May 2016, Summer Term, Week 4
On Tuesday Year 3 set out for their visit to Layer Marney Tower. The
weather was dreadful but this didn't dampen spirits! Everyone looked
amazing in their Tudor costumes and even the staff joined in! The day
was packed with super activities and the children learned a host of
interesting facts.
Congratulations to Nico B who recently won the a
golf competition at Dunstan Hall in Norwich. He
was the only junior in a group of men (including his
Dad) and he managed to beat them all.
We have some budding golf players at Holmwood so
we hope Nico’s achievement will be an inspiration to
them all.
YEAR 7 TRIP . . .
Page 5 Friday 13 May 2016, Summer Term, Week 4
The Year 7s went to Wenbar Plastics Factory in Maldon where they make stands
for cosmetics displays and plastic boxes for signage.
Our thanks to Mr & Mrs Pullum for allowing us to visit.
Then they went to the National Gallery in London and looked at
some incredible landscapes.
Poppy A said; “It was eye opening”. Tammy E said; “I liked
watching how they did the screen printing in the plastics factory.”
Jasmine W said; “It was interesting to see how many machines
there were to make plastic.” Henrietta C said; “I saw art from a
different perspective”.

BOARDING . . .
Page 7 Friday 13 May 2016, Summer Term, Week 4
As Olympic season begins to kick off, Wednesday evening boarding
has taken on a competitive edge. In our first Holmwood Olympiad,
boarders have been divided into 3 teams, each representing a
'country'.
This week saw a “Bake Off” style competition with the teams having
to make Brazilian brigadeiros (chocolate truffles) and to present them
in a manner which displayed either elements of their country or of
the Olympics. Three intrepid judges voted for the entries based on
taste and presentation.
Team South Africa won the Gold medal, with the best tasting
brigadeiros displayed with a real Rio carnival theme. Silver went to
the beautifully presented truffles of Team Australia, which showed
the Olympic Rings and the Australian Flag. Bronze medal was
awarded to 'The People's Republic of Mersea' for a wonderful display
showing the island's maritime connections.
This week saw the Year 4s boarding for the first time.
They had a delicious supper followed by tuck and an
exhilarating game of 'Capture the Flag' on the field.
