Christmas can be a real mixed bag, or should I say ‘a mixed Santa’s sack’. On

the one hand, it’s a time for celebration, creating and eating your favourite treats. And it’s lovely to experience the joy of gifting and receiving. Yet, this time of the year can often be filled with stress, commercial demands for bigger and better gifts, family conflict, loss and isolation. The pressure to be a perfect ‘Stepford Christmas family’ can create a whole lot of angst during the festive season. What if this year it can be different? What if it didn’t have to be about feeling stressed, sick and guilty?

Many of the articles in this edition are about tuning in to yourself, being kind to you without too many rigid restrictions and finding the unique way you would like to ‘be’ over the holiday season. Personally, I am choosing to be grateful for Christmas!

Dec/Jan is also a time for me to reflect on the year which has been full and unlike any other before it. I would like to give special thanks to the amazing Holistic Bliss team: Ros, Andrew, Amy, Sharon, Rose and Kate for all your hard work and support. And a huge thanks to our incredible writers and advertisers, it just wouldn’t be possible to create this magazine without you either. I have also valued the assistance with four cover stories this year: Kay Stroud, Raelene Byrne, Nicole Taryn and Mary-Lou Stephens, thanks for writing such inspiring words.

And of course thanks to YOU for reading this magazine and being part of what we have created this year and what we continue to create in each moment. Grateful Christmas Greetings and see you in 2015!

It is well recognised in both contemporary and western medicine that stress plays a significant role in the

development of dis-ease within the body. Not too long ago, we, as primitive

beings, relied on our stress response to survive imminent circumstances of danger that required intense bouts of strength and endurance, such as being chased by predators. This response is aroused by a perceived threat to survival, which leads to a cascade of reactions within the body.

Firstly, the hypothalamus, a small gland in the brain, sends a signal to an even smaller gland in the brain, the pituitary gland. This pathway terminates upon activation of the adrenal glands, located at the top of the kidneys. The adrenals then release “stress” hormones, specifically adrenaline and cortisol. It is this hormone, cortisol, which causes a change in dominance of the nervous system, which interrupts vital functions of the body so that we can perform our choice to fight or take flight.

The sympathetic nervous system takes control, the blood vessels constrict, increasing blood pressure, heart function and promoting circulation to the limbs. Glucose is released into the bloodstream in preparation for muscle use, and vital processes such as digestion and urination are suppressed.

The issue with the stress response in this day and age is that most of us rely on

this response to simply get through the day, and most don’t even notice they are running off a sympathetically dominant nervous system.

The stress response is triggered by a perceived threat to our survival, and though the biological mechanisms of this response remain the same as they did long ago, our perception of danger has changed immensely. We now respond to traffic or anger or deadlines with a rush of adrenaline, and though adrenaline certainly has its purpose, constantly relying on it as a source of energy can be the basis of many illnesses, and result in the exacerbation of many more. Common consequences of nervous system imbalance that I see as a practitioner are elevated and fluctuating blood glucose levels, and disturbed digestive function due to suppression of digestive processes.

The key is balance and focus. The most important thing to avoid when stressed is eating, which unfortunately is a commonly seen coping mechanism to stress itself! A good practise to get into is taking five long, deep, sustained breaths into the abdomen before eating. This assists in rebalancing the nervous system. Looking, smelling and appreciating your food will cause salivation, which is the first step in the digestive process. One can also have a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar 15 minutes before eating to increase acidity in the stomach and assist digestion.

Nearly four years ago I walked down Bulcock Street in Caloundra and was captivated

by the exotic aroma coming from a new shop called ‘Red Hot Chilli Pepper’. After walking in to the very colourful and beautifully ornate spice and gift shop, I was warmly greeted by the effervescent creator, Vicki Taylor. Vicki cultivated a passion for spices and international cuisines after years of backpacking around the globe, experiencing different cultures, so it was only natural she would eventually create a boutique spice shop where she could share her wisdom and give people an ‘other world’ experience.

They say change is the spice of life and that’s been true for Vicki’s work life, coming from a nursing background and then later venturing in to the world of investment banking. Now as a small business owner, Vicki has managed to combine all her talents; the caring nurse has transformed into the attentive,

customer-focussed spice merchant, sharing her interest in the culinary and medicinal aspects of herbs and spices with her patrons. While her business acumen was awakened in the banking industry, she has really come into her own over the last few years, receiving business awards and also being elected to the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee. And if that’s not busy enough, she also runs her own networking group in Caloundra which supports other small businesses!

Vicki is not one to shy away from challenges, in fact this year she took the leap of faith and started a gourmet cooking school on the Coast called ‘Licensed to Spice’ and the feedback from the class participants and community has been outstanding. Each cooking class has a themed cuisine, for example: Mexican, Moroccan, Persian and many more. These classes dovetail nicely with her retail work and regular

spice blending classes; the added bonus for Vicki is her fond memories from overseas backpacking trips are recreated every time she teaches and shares her wisdom.

“Close your eyes and smell the spices so you can appreciate what they are and when you try and cook with or eat them, do the same thing. From the fi rst few mouthfuls, try to identify the spices you have used so you can appreciate them and recreate memories,” she shares.

Vicki is one creative soul but she also ignites the creativity in her participants and while not all of them fi nd their ‘Inner Heston’, they certainly leave her class with skills and the confi dence to experiment. She shares her understanding of the health benefi ts of the herbs and spices, and also shows people how to use them appropriately and achieve the right balance of fl avours. In the process, people are empowered

to cook at home, save money and steer away from the fast food lifestyle. “Spice is the cheapest ingredient in a dish but the one that has the most impact on fl avour. When people say they don’t like spicy food, most of the time it’s because they have had something with too much chilli in it.” Vicki says it’s all about educating people and opening up new culinary horizons for them so they can take it at their own pace and suit their own palate.

Vicki says her recipe for success is quite simple: “The direction of my business is based on what customers want. I always thought I was a good listener but I’ve realised over the years I’ve needed to become a better listener and try and put myself in my customers’ shoes.” Vicki says at times people come into the shop in a bad mood, which she used to take personally but she has realised people can have all sorts of

things going on in their lives and if she can assist them in some way to leave the shop having an amazing experience and feeling a bit lighter, then she feels she’s been of assistance and diffused the situation, taking the heat out.

Vicki says she has also noticed people are becoming more adventurous with their cooking and there is a big ‘Back to basics’ food trend, with many new spices being launched. Next year she would like to teach people new skills and work with more school children and retired people with a ‘paddock to plate’ approach. “Kids hardly cook these days. I grew up on a farm in New Zealand and was cooking at nine years of age. Mum taught us that.” She’s confi dent now that her business has been well established, and would like to give back to the community and educate the younger generations and give retired people a new range of skills and help

connect them with other people in the community.

The new year holds many more exciting developments for Vicki as she has plans to purchase a commercial property on the Coast and move Red Hot Chilli Pepper and Licensed to Spice cooking school under the one roof. There is also a whisper in the air about a cafe and soup bar opening, offering Moorish spicy soups for winter and fresh wraps for summer. Look out for the launch of ‘Red Hot Spice Tours’ with the fi rst tour leaving for Kerala (the spice capital of India) and she is also garnering interest from the community to support the creation of a Chilli Festival in Caloundra and believes it will contribute signifi cantly to small business and the general public.

Vicki’s creativity just continues to fl ow and her shop is fast becoming an iconic hot spot. She is passionate about assisting people of all ages and backgrounds to spice up their life with a few basic ingredients and crucial spices. Let your senses acknowledge the unique experience, there’s really nothing else quite like it in Queensland!

Favourite spice: Allspice because I can use it in sweet and savoury dishes.

Favourite Christmas tradition: My husband and I wake up in the morning and walk on the beach and then have smoked salmon and scrambled eggs plus a glass of champagne. We miss our family at this time of the year who live in NZ. So we often have a group of friends over in the afternoon/early evening and have burnt honey, orange and clove glazed ham, with an array of condiments and salads. We also like to dress up to celebrate the day.

Favourite Christmas drink (for a treat): RHCP Christmas cocktail –

Ingredients:

Vodka (as desired)

120ml coconut milk

The Spice of Life

½ fresh lime squeezed½ tsp honey2 tsp sugarA good pinch of chilli powderA good pinch of fi ne or ground Himalayan salt

Method: Mix sugar, salt and chilli powder together and spread out on a plate. Wet the rim of a martini glass and dip into the mixture. Fill a cocktail shaker two-thirds of the way with ice then tip in vodka, coconut milk, honey and squeezed lime. Shake well and strain into glass.

Top Christmas Silly Season Tip: I’m an organised person so my advice is to make a list to take the stress away and don’t leave things until the last minute. Keep it spicy and spend time with people you love.

Method: Mix sugar, salt and chilli powder together and spread out on a plate. Wet the rim of a martini glass and dip into the mixture. Fill a cocktail shaker two-thirds of the way with ice then tip in vodka, coconut milk, honey and squeezed lime. Shake well and strain into glass.

Top Christmas Silly Season Tip: I’m an organised person so my advice is to make a list to take the stress away and don’t leave things until the last minute. Keep it spicy and spend time with people you love.

I have just fi nished teaching my 8-day Medical Intuition courses and I was refl ecting on what a year it has been

as I listened to the songs CELEBRATION by Kool and the Gang and WE ARE FAMILY by Sister Sledge. I had this overwhelming feeling in my heart about the connections made on the course and it reminded me it felt like family. I then thought about the festive season and Christmas. I must admit I am childlike at Christmas time and do get carried away with wanting to do my favourite thing and that is give gifts to lots of people.

Christmas time can be a happy and sad time for people as the energies around this time are extraordinary. I recall when I was Nursing before having children, I always worked Christmas Day so I could be there for the patients. Yes I was the Nurse dressed up, singing and dancing through the wards and bringing gifts for people.

The biggest gift I gave was connecting

to someone, holding their hand, listening to them. But then he gifted to me in an extraordinary way as I watched inside his body with my ‘medical intuitive eyes’. I literally could see my patient, Jack’s cancer was healing.

Jack was a 72-year-old man who had been to WWII, he had family that lived interstate and he was unable to see them as he was having chemotherapy. He was quite sad about the situation and shared with me. I listened and gently rubbed his veteran hand. I asked if I could gift him something I do to help me feel ‘better’ and he said yes.

‘Close your eyes Jack and take 3 deep breaths in your own time’. We did a visualisation on what he wanted most of all for Christmas with no limits, just like young children do.

His body became soft and supple. At the same time he asked me if I would do energy work… wowsers what a gift to me. I did not know he loved the spiritual

aspects to healing. “Jeannie I can feel every cell in my body tingling and it feels like they are morphing in to something new”. I always got called Jeannie when magic happened and patients confi ded in me. He was praying and feeling for his granddaughter Honey to be with him. I watched and I could literally see a change within his cells when he thought about love and his granddaughter.

The power of the mind and accessing the metaphysical can have a profound effect on our well being. ‘Jeannie. I had forgotten this magic and I knew you knew about this spiritual work. Something inside me told me. All I need now is for my granddaughter to be here and I know today will be the best day ever.’

Again I watched intently inside his body. OMG! The cells were literally changing in front of my eyes. The power of gratitude and absolute love were buzzing inside and it looked like little

fi reworks inside the cell. The DNA of the cell was changing its story. “Jack, when you think about Christmas, your granddaughter and access spirituality what do you feel and recall?” Christmas was always a time of connection and love for me. A time to refl ect on what gifts I had for the year but not the physical presents but the gift of learning, the gift of connecting and the gift of being with people. Most of all I loved the energies of Christmas time as a child where it was fun, games and playing. We did not have much but that did not matter as we had nature.”

That day I left work knowing that I had gifted Jack by listening, offering healing, by touching, but most of all he gifted to me. He taught me the lesson of receiving. What he gave to me can not be bought, spent or used but it can be shared. He gave me love and connection which I can give at anytime to anyone.

A few weeks later Jack was discharged cancer free. He had gifted himself the power to love himself and his talents. He came back to visit me and shared that everything is possible if you focus on others. “Jeannie whilst you were giving to me, I was giving back as that is the universal law’.

Everyday is Christmas for me and everyday I gift a letter, email, Facebook message or buy a present for someone I know or a total stranger. I know it makes my cells vibrate love when I do this and I receive so much by doing this. Remember to see you are a gift to me and so many. Dream big and let your body talk to you.

Blessings and absolute love to you at this time.

For all the talk and hype around what to eat, what’s healthy, what’s not, when, where and how to eat,

not a lot of talk is focused on what nourishment truly is. Nourishment is usually a feeling that goes way beyond food. We’ve heard people talk about the ‘hole in the soul’. This is a great example of describing the emptiness we sometimes feel. Funnily enough, this is one of the triggers that send us to the fridge, the bar and activities that we feel fill the hole.

I remember back to my binge eating days where no amount of food could fill the hole. I have learnt a lot over the years of my own recovery from overeating and found my way to true nourishment. As we enter into a new kind of consciousness, more attention will be focused on nourishing ourselves with higher vibrations rather than just focusing on food.

If you identify with feeling under-nourished or over-fed you may like

to do this little exercise daily. Upon waking, tune into how you feel in your stomach. This energetic centre is called our Sacral Chakra and it is responsible for our nourishment. First notice if you are feeling empty or uneasy in your stomach. Then imagine that a beautiful white light is streaming through your whole body, especially your stomach. Feel it emptying unnecessary worry, other people’s garbage, stagnating energy and clearing you right out. Then ask your spiritual helpers to bring you the ‘vibration of the day’. It may have a name such as ‘love’ or ‘peace’. It may have a specific colour. Consider it the perfect prescription for you! Then sit back, relax and receive. Feel it filling your stomach first and then gradually filling up every corner of your body. Notice how differently you feel. You may like to keep a journal on the different types of nourishment you are receiving and how it makes you feel.

After receiving this nourishment, you are in the best position to plan your meals for the day. When you are

feeling full rather than empty, your food planning will come from a space of love rather than fear.

I suggest my Lightworker Practitioner students to nourish themselves with our 12 Principles. Calling on any of these principles powerfully nourishes and raises our vibration immensely: Honesty, Open-mindedness, Willingness, Forgiveness, Unity, Discipline, Faith, Responsibility, Love, Wholeness, Joy and Peace.

Most of the time food is looked upon as fun and celebration. However it is never really fun when we are using it to fill the hole in the soul. In the end our relationship with food can become a toxic dependency. We can really enjoy our food whilst feeling nourished at the same time when we are satisfied with the right kinds of vibrations. When our cup runneth over, we feel energised, attract abundance and give back to the wider community with love in our hearts.

So the silly season is upon us, what a great excuse to let the hair down and celebrate the year!! This is a

fun time of the year, the sun is out and it’s all about socialisation, not about restriction. December is party season, so ‘detox’ is certainly a dirty word, or rather something we ignore until it’s time to set New Year’s resolutions. So if you’re feeling a little torn, because you dig the whole ‘body is a temple philosophy and like the idea of consciously keeping well and looking after yourself, but the social calendar is getting in the way of that, then how about focusing on cleansing and protecting the system as you go along, rather than kicking into full blown detoxification mode. We are, after all, social creatures, so the isolation that often follows an alcohol-free, coffee-free, meat-free, gluten-free, dairy-free detox program isn’t going to fit into your summer holiday plans.

Focus on protecting your 700 trillion beautiful cells, eliminating the toxins and supporting your body through the times ahead which may well involve a

few extra ‘naughties’, have the best of both worlds and survive the festivities this summer.

Green smoothies and juices – Mother nature’s multi vitamin. Might be time to drop some hints to Santa about a cold pressed juicer or Nutri bullet for Christmas.

Coffee enemas – when you get your head around the whole enema concept, you’ll wonder why you didn’t start these earlier. A sure fire way to eliminate all of the toxins you just loaded yourself with, without them circulating around the body and causing inflammation and oxidative stress. A coffee enema is also a really great way to cure a hangover!

Superfoods – pimp your food with these beauties, every little nutritional hit you can get is crucial, sprinkle your muesli with goji berries, add hemp seeds to your salad, sprinkle curries with dulse flakes, acai powder to your smoothies.

Drink filtered water – you require 1 litre for every 22kg of body weight. Hydrating your system keeps the cell

membranes healthy, which makes them more easily able to absorb and utilise nutrients.

Liver love – if you enjoy an alcoholic beverage, get yourself a good quality liver support formula, there’s lots available which can protect your liver from extra stress without really stimulating detoxification too much, too quickly. St Mary’s thistle is a great start.

Coconut oil – sunshine is crucial for healthy vitamin D levels which will in turn boost your immune system and support healthy neurotransmitter production. Enjoy the sun and don’t block it with chemical filled sunscreen. For the safest protection, use coconut oil which has an SPF of 8 or seek out some pure organic carrot oil and add this to your coconut oil. Carrot oil has an SPF of 40+.

If you’re guilty of burning the candle at both ends, make sure you’re one step ahead.

I’ve never been a great participant of Christmas in a religious sense, but I sure like the trimmings that go with

it… long weeks of sunny holidays and best of all the presents and food! For me the end of the year is in itself a reason to celebrate… I’ve survived and another cycle of our earth has reached its zenith.

In all cultures food is an important part of celebrations and that’s the part I like best of all. Planning the feast, shopping for the ingredients, preparing, cooking and choosing the platters and decorations. The satisfaction of sitting at a table with loved ones watching them consume the food with pleasure is the pay-off for all that work.

Celebration foods should be special foods we don’t eat on a regular basis and they quite often include plenty of sugars, fats and numbers. I believe we can eat that food short term and survive without too many side effects if we balance out this deluge of goodies with fermented grain soaks and vegetables. Eating fermented foods helps our

stomach to remain acidic to break down our food and filter out some of the more harmful microbes from passing into our small intestine.

A study by Dr Orla-Jensen in 1948 found the stomach uses acid to kill pathogenic bacteria, fungi, viruses and protozoa while allowing more beneficial microbes to pass through.

Lactic acid in fermented vegetables makes them so beneficial to our stomach and so detrimental to the harmful bacteria that bloom from consuming junk foods.

Introducing fermented foods and grain soaks into our daily diet will help keep us fresh and vital by assisting our bacterial family in keeping us clean, well nourished and sane.

To get you started with this fermented journey here’s a simple fermented grain soak called Rejuvelac, made popular by Dr Ann Wigmore in the 1960s:

Wash 1 cup organic wheat and place in a large glass jar with 3 cups

filtered water. Tie a chux cloth over the mouth and leave in a warm place for 48 hours.

Strain off the liquid (rejuvelac) and replace with 2 cups filtered water. Leave for 24 hours and repeat this step once more.

Discard the soaked wheat as compost and start again. Drink as much of the rejuvelac as you like during the day and put the left over rejuvelac into your fridge to stop the fermentation process.

Most people sprout the grain first, but I’ve been using this quick and simple recipe for rejuvelac since 1978 and it’s served me well.

To sum up, you can have your cake, eat it and flourish if you nurture the subtle balance of your gut bacteria. Happy Solstice everyone!

Visit our Kahuna Mist facebook page for information on basic fermenting classes. kahunamist.com

Food. What tantalising, evocative, transcendental experiences the preparation, sharing,

contemplation, celebration and ingestion of food delivers to humanity!

Real food. Food that not only heals our bodies, but nurtures our souls; a gateway, no less, to enchanted realms…

Whilst every moment is a blessing, this time of the year is for so many of us truly blessed, and food, again, features as we feast, fantasise and fuel our senses throughout the festive season!

But what is food, actually? The Oxford Dictionary defines food as : “Any nutritious substance that people or animals eat or drink… in order to maintain life and growth.”

From this succinct description, many readers of Holistic Bliss will instinctively grasp what food is not.

Here is an incomplete list:• Microwaved “food”• Fast “food”• Takeaway “food”• Preserved, artificially flavoured and/or

sweetened “food”

• The things we eat, drink, breathe or otherwise ingest which are laced with additives, sulphites, nitrates, emulsifiers, antibiotics and “colours” (to name a few).

Indeed, the act of eating in the 21st century is surely a game of Russian Roulette (Google, for example, Bovine Recombinant Growth Hormone and GMOs for starters).

This Christmas, if one is shopping for a ham or frozen turkey, spend a few seconds reading the ingredients… if the words nitrates, sugars, or preservatives appear, it might be a good time to breathe, regroup and reflect on these “food” choices!

Bill Statham’s pocket sized masterpiece, “The Chemical Maze” is a brilliant, sobering, and ultimately, health and wealth promoting shopping companion… highly recommend reading for this time of year.

That dictionary definition, of course, canvasses everything we drink and spread on our skin as well.

In 1975, the FDA (initially) banned

artificial sweeteners after they were shown to promote cancer and seizures in laboratory rats and chimpanzees.

In 2014, the FDA officially (and finally) recognised fluoride, the byproduct of industrial waste, to be a toxic substance.

Also in 2014, Time Magazine published a front page retraction, admitting, after thirty years, that all those “scientific” health claims regarding margarine were, in fact… “wrong”.

Chronic illness and disease continues to skyrocket worldwide.

What then do we make of our food choices? Will it be artificially sweetened, fluoridated sodas, or 100% pure coconut water?

Will it be processed, genetically modified, synthesised or… anything organic and whole?

A Happy Christmas to our readers, and may your passion for real food be a very big reason, for blissful health throughout the Season!

My husband was born in Scotland, and being raised in the Northern Hemisphere he

finds it very strange indeed having a hot Christmas! I, of course, had never really considered this too much until I met him, as a hot (and often very humid) Christmas is what I know.

We’ve learnt to combine our Hemispheres when it comes to Christmas lunch, with me conceding that it’s okay to have a hot dish such as roast turkey on the table, and him admitting that a fruit laden pavlova is pretty darn good!

Christmas Day is always going to be a time for some amount of food indulgence for most people, but I think that what we’ve learnt the most is that the idea of being so full at the end of the meal that you can hardly walk is really not a great idea. Peter tells me that he used to look on in awe as a child while his father and uncle competed for that

last piece of Christmas pudding, even if it meant they were rolling around like beach balls afterwards!

We are fortunate in Australia that the weather usually allows us to get out and about over the Christmas break, and so it’s easier to work off those indulgences with a swim at the beach or a game of cricket in the local park. Which brings me to the next thing which can be an issue with Australian summers: all that sunshine!

We know that it’s vital to get a little bit of sunshine directly on our skin daily if possible, especially with the low levels of vitamin D amongst the Australian population which are emerging at the moment. However too much exposure can lead to problems, not just related to sunburn, but also to your skin becoming dehydrated and weathered.

At this time of year my Skin Calming Spritzer goes everywhere with me, as its cooling combination of aloe vera,

witch-hazel and rose water combined with the refreshing and healing scents of lavender, chamomile, and mint works wonders as a blast of cool mist on those uncomfortable days, as well as a rehydrator and healer when the sun has just been too harsh. Daily moisturising is also essential, as the sweat which is designed to help keep our bodies cool also has the effect of robbing our skin of its natural oil balance.

The men shouldn’t get away without paying attention to their skin health either: using a natural shaving oil daily is a quick and easy way to spruce up and moisturise at the same time, and a deodorant containing Magnesium chloride helps to replenish internally as well as externally. Fortunately for me, my husband is a great fan of all my men’s range products, so I know what he’ll be getting for Christmas this year!

During the festive season, emotions are often running close to the surface, and our

reactions can be bigger than usual. Around this time of the year we are dealing with various end-of-year events, preparing for Christmas, managing school holidays, reflecting on the year that’s been, and setting intentions for the next one.

Family time is usually part of the festive season and although intended to be joyful and connected, family events can also provoke a variety of challenging emotional experiences. We might remember past hurts, feel the grief of missing a family member for the first time, feel obligation, or fear not being enough. When interpersonal issues arise, it leads to moaning about our family members and incessantly questioning ourselves. I’d like to offer a simple solution: LOVE.

There is a particular excerpt from a Rumi poem that has always inspired me:

In order to enter into your rose garden,

the soul makes peace with the thorns.

Choose love. Choose love.Without this beautiful love, life is nothing but a burden.

One of my favourite go-to strategies, whenever a critical thought is present, is to repeat these words internally (perhaps in rhythm with a long breath): “Choose Love. Choose Love”. No matter what issue life is presenting, it is possible to do this in some way. You can find a positive reframe, see the gift in the situation, or choose to see others’ reactive behaviour differently (for example, seeing the other as a product of their circumstances and/or experiences, rather than expecting them to be something they aren’t being).

What you think reflects in your reality, therefore consciously choosing your thoughts is a worthwhile experiment. Without a loving or compassionate perspective, our experience of life really can seem like

a burden of endless tasks and worry about life situations. Our minds can quite habitually run the blame and victim stories, and we feel bad as a result.

When you take a look behind the scenes of any human drama, the emotions are all related to either Love or Fear. Our experiences are generally either pleasurable or painful. When you become aware of the simplicity of our human experience, you see that you are able to choose where you place your attention. In any moment, you can ask yourself, am I reacting from Love or Fear right now? Will my choice allow me to experience pleasure, or will it produce pain?

My recommendation? Choose Love wherever and whenever you can. It will be a gift to yourself, your loved ones and the world.

Food Glorious food! Christmas time is a time for friends, family, drinking, feasting and indulging

culinary pleasures – right? As I’ve observed family and friends

over the years hoe into Christmas lunch with a gusto, I’ve often wondered why it is that on Christmas Day we seem to give ourselves a leave pass from any kind of awareness of what we are consuming. How many times have you come to late afternoon on Christmas Day and everyone is lounging around tired and lethargic because their bodies are having a hard time processing all that they’ve eaten and drank, starting with the champagne breakfast?

If asked why we eat ten times more than our body requires or desires in one day, the response is typically – because it’s Christmas. We over-indulge because that’s what you do at Christmas. Really?

According to who? And where is the choice in all of that? I wonder how many conclusions and judgments we have come to that keeps us in an auto response to eat like we are never going to see another prawn or piece of pork again?

I’m not saying that we shouldn’t indulge in pleasures, however I’m curious as to why, on Christmas Day there is a sense of entitlement to indulge that we don’t necessarily function from all year round. What if, on Christmas Day you just stood back for a moment and enjoyed the visual display of glorious food in front of you and then asked your body a question – Body, what would you like to eat right now? Include your body in the celebrations consciously instead of forcing it to digest one of everything on the table, regardless of whether it would enjoy it.

What happens when you listen to your body and become aware of what it would like is that every single mouthful becomes an orgasmic experience. When you follow the joy of discovering the tastes and sensations that your body is asking for, every mouthful of food you have is like opening another gift. And I wonder what it would be like if we valued our bodies all year round and ate consciously every day. Would we even have that sense of entitlement to indulge if we have consciously eaten and enjoyed the orgasmic experience of food every day?

What if you could truly have more ease with eating and drinking at Christmas time? Does orgasmic conscious eating sound like fun to you? Why don’t you ask your body?

The past four years have been spent on a labour of love and passion at Australian Institute of

Health and Business Management (AIHBM) to be the only Registered Training Organisation that delivers both Certificate IV 10346NAT in Reiki Treatment Practice and Certificate IV 10334NAT in BodyTalk.

Sue Broughton owner of the luxury boutique Casa Di Natura Day Spa Centre at Flaxton, Sunshine Coast and Melissa Smith owner of BodyTalk Your Health at Mansfield, Brisbane have joined forces to bring their considerable experience, knowledge and skill to deliver these national qualifications within the complementary health arena as the Co-Directors of AIHBM.

BodyTalk System™ is a relatively unknown ‘leading edge’ therapy that reconnects our body’s communication, enabling the internal processes to function at its best, which repairs and prevents disease whilst accelerating the healing process. This system stimulates the body’s inner wisdom allowing it to balance and heal itself on all levels.

It’s simple, safe, delivers results fast and can be used as a ‘stand alone’ to

address many chronic and acute health problems, as well as integrated into any healthcare regimen to increase its overall effectiveness.

For those of you that know how difficult it is to get a new national qualification approved under ASQA, it may also surprise you that the girls from AIHBM are the first in the world to get the BodyTalk System™ approved as a formal qualification in their country.

There is a real momentum building with this modality around the world particularly in USA, Canada, Germany, Japan and now in Australia. Some very respectable and reputable doctors, scientists and health professionals are becoming full time BodyTalk Practitioners as the results speak for themselves with their clients. It is one of the new holistic healthcare systems that is underpinned with Quantum Physics and can truly help you to heal yourself. Controlled testing around the world has already commenced to provide evidence on the system’s healing potential and power.

After 10 years of trying, the combined efforts of Reiki Australia and AIHBM have worked together

to bring the only dedicated formal qualification for professional practice to fruition. Some of the benefits of doing the Certificate IV in Reiki Treatment Practice are –

• The Certificate IV in Reiki Treatment Practice elevates Reiki treatment to be considered as a legitimate form of healing, in line with other recognised complementary health practices and education

• Based on a clinical structure and foundation

• You are finally recognised as a true professional with a nationally-accredited Certificate IV qualification that has national standards

• It is a validation of professional knowledge and skills in the workplace

• A Certificate IV in Reiki Treatment Practice provides opportunity to deepen your Reiki healing practice

If you are looking to educate yourself in complementary therapies, these two national qualifications are worth exploring as a career option.

Lyn Taylor is learning how to walk all over again, and she is doing it with the help of the Feldenkrais

Method®.Lyn, 70, of Alexandra Headland

on the Sunshine Coast, walks 7km with a group of friends three mornings a week, and at other times with her dog Tilly. “There’s coffee at the end so it’s physically and socially really good for me,” Lyn says. But for six months, Lyn’s beloved walks were put on hold – debilitating knee pain slowed her down to the point where she couldn’t keep up with her friends.

After just a few gentle and enjoyable experiences of embodied learning through the Feldenkrais Method, Lyn discovered that it was the way she was walking that was causing the pain. It took a local Feldenkrais practitioner Robyn Lavery, who approached Lyn as a whole person, to find this simple key.

“It’s interesting that it was picked up after an MRI and an orthopaedic surgeon and a physio. There was nothing wrong with my knee in the

MRI,” Lyn says. “I thought I was going to go under the knife but after the MRI showed up nothing, I was just stuck with a bad knee.”

The Feldenkrais Method uses gentle movement to work at the level of the nervous system to discover the habits in you that you’re not even aware of, and to gently open up the possibility of other ways to do something, creating new habits, and new neurological pathways.

The Method can be practised in two ways. One is Awareness Through Movement® lessons, led by a practitioner who uses verbal instruction to take students through specially designed movement sequences. The other is a one-on-one, hands-on session known as Functional Integration®.

Formulated by the pioneering Russian-born physicist and Judo master Moshe Feldenkrais in the second half of the 20th century, the Method has brought about stunning results for people from all walks of life – from children with cerebral palsy and

learning difficulties, to stage performers and elite athletes.

Moshe Feldenkrais is known for another tenet: “Make the impossible possible, the possible easy, and the easy elegant.”

For Lyn, the Feldenkrais Method has not only given her better physical function, but her experience of learning through the Method has been thoroughly enjoyable as well.

“Not many other exercises are so gentle that you can see how they improve with flexibility,” Lyn says.

“You do hip rotations or something like that, just gently, and then you move it and it goes further and then you’re able to rotate your hip a lot further than you did in the beginning but you don’t notice it because it’s so gentle.

It’s very relaxing to go there, and it’s very quiet and gentle. So it relaxes your body and although you’re working your mind, at the same time, it’s very calming. So in a way, you’re relaxing your brain as well. It’s a time-out.”

Q: How would you describe the work you do?

A: I help clients release physical and emotional pain using a technique called Faster EFT. This is a combination of ancient Chinese acupressure, modern psychology and NLP (neuro-linguistic programming). It’s a very powerful way to shift emotional blocks that can cause self sabotage patterns in your everyday life that prevent you from achieving the things you desire.

Q: What changes have you seen in people over time?

A: I’ve worked with many people both here in Australia and overseas, during my time at one of the world’s leading drug and alcohol rehabilitation centres.

There are usually very common threads of emotional patterns that have occurred at specific times in a person’s life that cause these emotional triggers which can lead to people engaging in patterns of behaviours that they know are not in their best interests.

Once these emotional blocks are dealt with, some people experience life

changing shifts within a single session. I have worked with drug addicts who no longer wish to take drugs anymore, or people with emotional disorders who feel like life is spiralling out of their control, take back their power and realise that they truly are the person in control.

Having a person come to me who truly believes they have a serious issue with their life and then seeing them walk out the door smiling and knowing that they can control the way they feel is extremely rewarding.

Q: What sorts of issues do people face over the festive season and how can you empower people?

A: One of the main issues over the festive season is depression and anxiety. Unfortunately many people do not see the joy in this time of year and can feel quite anxious about the pressures this time of year brings. This is then followed by weight gain and body confidence issues in the New Year.

We can work with the issues that are causing the emotional blocks relating to their depression, anxiety

or weight issues. Once people release an emotional block and realise how much that impacted their belief system, the change to a person’s wellbeing is incredible. I help empower people to change the way they feel and to change their patterns of behaviour resulting in a happier, healthier person.

Q: What changes do you hope to see in your practice for 2015?

A: My aims are to continue making changes in the lives of others by helping them achieve things they may previously not have thought possible.

I am still working with a lot of people for drug and alcohol addictions as I am one of only 20 people worldwide trained in specific techniques for addictions and we see amazing results every day. I have also been working with more corporate clients to achieve their goals by helping their employees understand what holds them back in sales, presentations or other aspects of the business world.

The festive season is one of the busiest times as we run around getting organised and prepare to catch up with colleagues, friends

and loved ones. It’s a time of giving and receiving. As we think of those we need to give gifts to,

don’t forget to give to yourself and take time to receive what nurtures you.

The gift of love, health and wellbeing far exceeds any material gift. Working ourselves to the ground in the desire to give the best material items to our kids, family and friends only creates stress and anxiety.

Our love and wellness is our true wealth. Without our health, we haven’t got much to give. We may intend to give love but if our energy is drained and depleted, that is the energy that we will send out to others. When we give love and nurturing to ourselves, we have that energy to give to others.

The New Year is a time to evaluate what is working for you and what isn’t. How you are feeling on the inside is a good indication of where you need to focus. Do you feel light, free, energised and loved? Or do you really feel sad, lonely, fearful, resentful or negative in any way? If you don’t know where to start, just choose the first thing that pops into your head. That is usually the right one to start with.

If your negative emotions have taken control of your life, then it’s time to do the work to release them and bring true joy into your life.

A sustainable approach to the New Year is to work on positive change each day, in the moment. Instead of setting lofty goals such as losing weight, getting fit or to quit smoking, set an intention to work on yourself each day. It could be going out for a walk before the kids wake up, taking a salad to work for lunch or meditating in the evening before bed. Small changes each day will become second nature. That’s when true change happens.

When we focus on long-term goals, we often miss the moment right in front us. Enjoy what you have right now and more will come to you. You attract how you feel, not what you want. When you feel good, you bring good into your life.

If releasing negative emotions, feels overwhelming, Celestial Light can guide you to transform your life. If you choose to start meditation in the New Year, we have meditation groups every Wednesday night. Come and join like-minded people all wanting to improve their lives and make 2015 their best year so far.

This reality has a lot of myths about relationships – about what you can and should do to make

them work. One of the biggest myths is: relationship means being taken care of, and there is someone out there who will take care of you. That’s all about “doing”, right?

There’s a big difference between being taken care of and receiving the care of someone. Receiving the care of someone and, in turn, caring for them allows both of you to BE and enjoy who you are, both together and as individuals.

With true caring, you remain complete in your own right. Often when you expect to be taken care of, you become the affect of the other person, and your identity gets wrapped up with theirs. Both people then become diminished.

Sound familiar?True caring is the willingness to be

in allowance of whatever is coming up,

without having to fix anything. True caring is being vulnerable enough to let someone figure their way out of their own mess without the need to swoop in and take care of them.

When you have a point of view that somebody has to take care of you, that means they have to do for you, and you start keeping a list, a balance sheet. “Look, this is what I did for you, what did you do for me?” The relationship becomes a matter of tit for tat, rather than enjoying each other.

When people in my classes tell me what they’d like in a relationship, I always ask them “Where are you not willing to care for you that you are asking someone else to be?” If you’re willing to take care of you, you can then show somebody else how to care for you.

Really, it’s the willingness to be and care for yourself that creates dynamic, rewarding relationships. If you’re willing to be you, truly intimate with you,

then you’ll become an invitation for something greater.

The myth of “Being Taken Care Of” is one of the many assumptions about relationships that we cover right at the beginnings of New Beginnings™.

It has been said:“We are not human beings

having a spiritual experience, but spiritual beings having a human experience.”

What does this mean? For most of us, we have been

disconnected from the source of consciousness that is aware of “who we are” and “what we came here to do.”

Soul Infusion is a process that reconnects us with the “Soul Consciousness;” a higher state of consciousness that is observant of the mind and body but is not the mind or body. This “Soul Consciousness” is a state beyond the fear, doubt and judgement that co-exists within the mind.

It is not the mind. It is the “You” that extends beyond the mind; beyond restriction and limitation. It is aligned with your purpose and intention. Soul Infusion connects you with a

“knowingness” of what you are going through and what you can do about it.

How does Soul Infusion work? The process is very experiential.

It is challenging and requires a client to surrender into the mystery of their emotions and fears, moving beyond them into the realm of their infinite beingness.

Once defined by and identified with their fears and limitations, the client experiences a self that is separate from the chains that previously bound them, opening doors to access wisdom and possibility.

Soul Infusion has very practical benefits. Stress, anxiety, depression and lack of motivation all stem from the disconnection from who we really are. By experiencing the reconnection, the fears and doubts systematically melt away because we come to understand that they are an illusion of the mind and we are a consciousness beyond the

mind, capable of limitless possibilities.Soul Infusion is powerful.Soul Infusion is rewarding.Soul Infusion is for every one of you

who have ever said, “there has to be more to life than this.”

It is like connecting with a guide that has wisdom and understanding, except, that guide is ourselves in higher form, the Soul.

How good would it feel to be able to connect with your own source of wisdom before making an important decision?

Even better, how good would it feel to be able to practise this connection so that the vibration of your soul is infused into your own human form and you could increasingly co-exist as a soul in human form?

Two of my all time favourite things are Christmas and being creative. I love the festive feel of

this time of year and all the creative projects that go with it. It’s a time of giving and receiving, and although most of us love receiving a gift, the majority agree that the act of giving someone a special gift is fulfilling on a much deeper level. So… I have the perfect homemade gift idea that will suit anyone.

It is a twist on the traditional advent Calendar as we know it. This delightful advent is designed for charting progress, and setting goals, or for letting someone special know just how much you care. January is a month of New Year’s resolutions, often we set unobtainable long term goals which we rarely achieve, leaving a feeling of failure and disappointment in its wake.

Now for the twist, this advent hides in its pockets, either messages of love to someone special, or a goal which may

be as simple as, “I will go for a walk today”, “I will eat healthily today” or “I will say something positive to myself today”. The goals are intentionally small so that they are achievable which in turn increases self esteem and a sense of wellbeing. They can be tailor made to anybody and be as specific or general as you like.

Okay… so here is what you will need to get started: cardboard, paper, stickers, magazines, fabric, photos, envelopes, ribbons, glue stick, scissors, ruler, sparkles, creativity, imagination, and of course your love! The cardboard or fabric will act as the base for the calendar, and the idea is to create 31 individual pockets to represent each day of the month, they can be in a grid format, or spaced unevenly, some big, some small, whatever takes your fancy. Glue or sew these pockets onto the base. You may like to mix it up and have some fabric and paper, or felt, matchboxes are also fun.

Now that you have been creative, the next step is to add your love to the project. On a piece of paper write down 31 different affirmations, goals or messages and place one randomly into each pocket. I often like to add two extra pockets, and goals that are achieved for that day simply go into one pocket, and goals that are not go into another pocket. It’s nice to re-evaluate at the end of the month just how much you have accomplished and areas to work on for next month, no-one’s perfect!

This is a beautiful gift for a loved one, kids love trying to achieve each daily goal and it’s excellent for personal goal setting. I have some pics on my website and detailed instructions also. Remember to have fun and enjoy while you are creating, it’s good for you. Merry Christmas and Happy New year!

Since its conception, ‘The Shared’, Yandina, heart-child of Irishwoman Kate O’Reilly and

Derek ‘Boogie’ Payne has opened a window on a unique lifestyle concept. Originally a large warehouse close to the railway lines in Yandina, it has been transformed into a meeting place for like-minded people who wish to express themselves with heart and soul in a special way.

“People often ask me how The Shared came about, and I tell them we’re just making it up as we go along; whatever feels right. We are constantly learning and applying our new-found skills into our everyday practice,” said Kate.

The Shared is, at its core, a creative space where people’s talents are encouraged and nurtured. It’s a place where music, visual arts and conscious ways of living are inspired.

A highly sociable environment, The Shared has become a popular gathering place where creative locals have the opportunity to take themselves further and reach achievements far beyond what they had ever imagined.

“The Shared for us and many other creative souls sees a sanctuary of good vibes and well being. We accept and support natural medicines and are independent distributors of Young Living Essential Oils.

We have seen the faces and heard the voices of the people when visiting for the first time, or any time. Most cannot believe that there could be such a place in a little town called Yandina. You know the saying ‘small things comes in big packages’. We even have beautifully hand-crafted antique furniture for sale, where the history of some tells a story of people’s past. There is a lot to choose from: tables, chairs, beds, sofas, baskets, hand-painted Japanese china, traditional Tibetan pieces and much more,” said Kate.

This creative space was originally founded in 2012 as a new home for the Sunshine Coast School of Photography which has run since 2009. Having grown from small, green shoots, the Sunshine Coast School of Photography now offers a diploma course in Creative & Professional Photography. Classes are run by highly qualified and experienced teachers whose work is vibrantly exciting and current. These classes are for beginners and professionals alike and range from merely learning how to take better photographs, to master classes in professional photography and documentary film making.

“We’ve held a variety of health workshops too; in Yoga, Feldenkrias, Qi Gong and film festivals and screen documentaries were well attended. The

place turns into a wonderfully cosy cinema. These days, we are leaning more towards hiring the venue out to workshop facilitators, holding big musical acts and we are open for coffee most days of the week,” she said.

At The Shared cafe you can enjoy fresh and tasty organic food, coffee, tea and juices. Everything is kept conscientiously organic to keep with the natural flow of the space.

Looking for regular events? There are a few fixed events each month including the extremely popular and well-attended Singer Songwriter Session which takes place on the first Saturday of every month. This is a wonderful opportunity for songwriters of all ages to come along and take the stage in a relaxed and nurturing environment.

Games Night is a new event and is fun for the whole family. This takes place on the 2nd Thursday evening of every month from 6-9pm. It’s a chance for everyone to get together and have some old-fashioned fun in a creative environment.

The New Year will see many musical acts and fresh events coming to The Shared, so why not join in the community spirit?

Two of the leading causes of infertility are Endometriosis in women and Varicoceles in men.

These two conditions alone may potentially account for one-third of all causal factors that contribute to subfertility or infertility and essentially are known as blockage conditions.

Endometriosis is a condition in which the uterine lining breaks off and enters the abdominal cavity, where it grows in the abnormal situation, such as attached to the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or behind the uterus itself and blood-filled cysts may also form on the ovaries.

Since this migration is part of the endometrium, it builds up each month and then bleeds as usual (like normal inner uterine endometrial tissue), although the blood is unable to leave the body with the menstrual flow, thus causing blockage or stagnation that may contribute to period pain, possible pain during intercourse, and can also cause pain and bleeding with defecation and urination.

Endometriosis is the number one gynaecological cause of female infertility and affects 10 to 20 per cent of all women during their reproductive life. From a naturopathic point of view, herbal remedies such as – Cramp bark, Pulsatilla, Corydalis, Dong Quai and Peonia have shown to be quite effective at addressing the cause of this condition and alleviate the various symptoms. Omega 3 Oils – help to remove blood stasis and have anti-inflammatory properties. Nutrients such as – Magnesium, Zinc, Vitamins A, E, C and Bioflavonoids assist with the healing processes.

Varicocele is a condition where there are veins in or around the testes. This condition is estimated to affect some 25 per cent of all men, of which 40 per cent have fertility problems. Varicoceles form from veins being engorged due to weak or defective valves causing the blood to flow away from the testicles/abdomen leading to a blood pooling effect (blockage). Varicoceles can result in elevating the testicular temperature,

thus, resulting in sperm defects and lowered testicular volume.

Some of the naturopathy remedies for Varicoceles may include – herbs such as: Bilberry, Butcher’s broom, Horse chestnut, Gogi berries, and Grape seed extracts. Nutrients such as Co Enzyme Q 10, Essential Fatty Acids, Vitamins A, C and E and Zinc may also be beneficial to improve blood flow and tone blood vessels.

It has been estimated that the average sized human body is essentially made up of 225,308 thousand kilometres of micro/nano tubes (approximately two-thirds the distance from the earth to the moon) which is amazing. The number one thing that goes wrong with tubes is blockages, the leading causes of most modern dis-eases. If you or some one you know has been having fertility issues always consider having both Endometriosis and Varicoceles investigated.

Nothing seems to stir the human heart more than children. There is something about them

that implores even the hardest of hearts to soften. Seeing the children in India on a trip a few years back was truly a gift, particularly at the orphanage we visited. With them, our hearts melted. As parents, it’s easy to have children melt our hearts and to keep them the focus of our lives.

Yet with this focus, many couples lose sight of the fact they are also a couple in relationship and just as the health and welfare of their children is important, it’s also vital to keep the relationship in good health and balanced for the long term.

I see many couples that once had thriving intimacy, yet once the children came along, that all changed. And of course it does. You have a baby or small child who needs your utmost attention for survival. They must be the focus then. Men can feel the absence of intimacy more at that time, as

women are completely absorbed by the intimacy of mothering.

Yet as the children begin to grow, this absence of intimacy can become a pattern. Emotions can run high and communication can be challenged.

Generally, men’s hearts open when they make love, yet women need to feel love to make love. Everyone responds to loving communication and touch.

A woman’s body opens into love more in relaxation and slowness and for most, when intimacy is confined to a quick 20 minutes, the deed might be done but in the end, it does not fulfil either man or woman. He yearns for more. She feels the pressure for sex and instead of yielding to something that is now unfulfilling, she can pull her focus to her children.

A loving relationship will have an even greater impact on children than making sure that they are involved in five different activities a week. If parents are relaxed, the kids will be relaxed. It’s a given. If connection between a couple

is open and harmonious, children’s behaviour will balance out easily and quickly.

After couples return from our couples retreat, children notice their parents to be more loving, more relaxed, more intimate. When they feel their parents getting niggly again, the children tell them they need go into the bedroom and love each other!

So children respond. They know. They feel energetically what is happening between you as a couple.

With my children now in adulthood and knowing what I know now, without sacrificing the needs of my children, I can see how nurturing myself, and an authentically loving connection as a couple is paramount.

This festive season, make time for loving. Wouldn’t that just be the best gift you could give your children, no matter what age they are, in 2015?

When I first met my husband I tried to ignore him, even though he fascinated me.

We met at a dinner party; I thought my friends were trying to match-make us and being the mature and sophisticated woman I am, I avoided him for the entire evening. I didn’t want to give them the satisfaction of succeeding.

Fortunately the things we had in common, the soul truths and connections were too strong. When I finally surrendered to the fact he was intelligent, funny and many of his beliefs aligned with mine, we talked late into the night. I went home, alone, and had a dream. I dreamt we’d had dinner together and then the next day met up for a cup of tea. When I woke I realised I could do something we rarely get to do in this life. I could make a dream come true. I rang him. He swears if I hadn’t, he would have rung me. We met for a cup of tea. And so my dream

came true. There’s a longer version of this story in my first book Sex, Drugs and Meditation.

Ken was very different to any man I’d ever dated. He was, in my old way of thinking, a nerd and a dag; not cool. I believed I should only go out with musicians, writers or artists; men who dressed and acted in a certain way, were mysterious, slightly dangerous and never fully present. Ken was none of these things. It took me some time and effort to relax enough so I could accept him for the way he was. And the way he was, was perfect.

Later, when friends told me to leave him, I had to examine what was true for me, not for them. We all had the belief that a man should provide financially and take care of his wife. Ken had promised he would and though he may have not been able to do so financially, he was committed to learning how to

take care of me in other ways. As I said to my friends at the time, “I can either have an investment property or I can be with the man I love”. I made my choice. By the time our financial situation improved, our investment in our marriage had brought us immeasurable wealth in all the ways that matter.

A lot of the beliefs that I have (and probably many of yours, too) are drummed into our heads by advertising. The most entrenched beliefs are handed down to us through our cultures; the fairytale ending, the handsome prince, the knight on the white charger, the perfect man. Nothing else will suffice. Ken was none of these but he was perfect for me. I just had to discard those beliefs and find the truth underneath.

Every year at 8am on the 25th of December my friend, Susan, waits at the top of the stairs in the

family house she grew up in for her two younger sisters to join her. Once the three girls have congregated, they join hands and descend the stairs together and embark on another Christmas together. They are aged 33, 31 and 29 and this has always been their Christmas tradition. What was initially founded to steady the little ones when navigating steep steps has evolved into an essential and significant act signalling the start of an important event. Millions of people all over the world enjoy their version of Susan’s stairs when celebrating the festive period. However, for many of us the festive period is also synonymous with dashed expectations, family conflict, stress and debt.

So what are the components of a meaningful and stress free Christmas? Research would suggest that we step away from the credit cards and focus on that family game of charades. A study of 117 people aged between 18 and 80 indicated that a focus on

material gifts and spending money at Christmas was associated with lower scores on measures of wellbeing. However, respondents reported feeling happier when time was devoted to family and spiritual pursuits. The researchers concluded that the ever increasing economic emphasis of a modern Christmas may erode the very enjoyment it seeks to create (Kasser & Sheldon, 2002). More recent research findings have echoed the importance of prioritising family bonding traditions over expensive gifts. The work of Páez and his colleagues (2014) explored the impact of various Christmas experiences on mood and wellbeing. They concluded that individuals who participated in more family celebratory or spiritual rituals over the festive period enjoyed higher levels of positive wellbeing and satisfaction with life via increased social support and lowered levels of loneliness.

With the research suggesting that we go easy on the plastic and associated frenzied last minute shopping sprees in favour of investing in nourishing

traditions with friends and family try these tips for a different type of Christmas this year:

1. Set a low budget limit on buying gifts and ask friends to get creative with a Secret Santa gift.

2. Delegate Christmas tasks. Cooking, decorating or wrapping gifts can become quality time with friends and family if the focus shifts from ‘getting things done’ to ‘being together’.

3. If you don’t already have family rituals create some new ones! Get your family and friends together to watch the carol singers, go out for a walk after lunch, watch an old black and white movie together, or settle in for a board game marathon.

4. Remember to take regular pauses throughout the day to connect with the moments as they tick past. Really be present with your loved ones and savor this time together.

Wishing you a merry tradition-filled Christmas from the team at Mindful Therapy Psychology Services!

For over 16 years, I’ve been choosing natural and organic brands to replace all my skin care

and cosmetics, and subsequently making these products available via my online shop. The swap was fun and easy as there are so many fabulous choices that deliver amazing results. The search for make-up, however, has been a little more challenging. I am all for choosing natural and organic over non-natural brands but I will not sacrifice on quality. Hey, I am a woman. At the end of the day, I still want my make-up to have a flawless, fresh finish and to give the appearance that I am not wearing any at all.

Whilst there are many organic brands that are nice, my personal desire is to find that hidden gem that surpasses all the common cosmetic expectations.

Unfortunately the majority of natural cosmetics contain beeswax and I’m not keen on the idea of exploiting the very same creatures that are under threat due to our modern farming practices (especially if the beeswax is not organic, and not necessary as

a cosmetic ingredient). Many vegan brands can also include synthetic and harmful ingredients, or ranges that are not impressive in terms of the quality and colour.

The most shocking research finding was in respect to a common ingredient called MICA. If you read the full ingredient list of your make-up products, you’ll notice that this ingredient is in everything from lip products, to mineral makeup and more. Mica is marketed as a natural mineral from the earth. Sounds harmless. But if you dig a little deeper the truth is disturbingly harmful, not only to your skin but also to the way in which it is sourced.

Mica frosts are very shimmery, which is one of the appeals for companies to use this ingredient in products. However, because of the way that they are cut, the tiny pieces can create micro-tears on the skin and cause irritation, especially around the nose and mouth. Ever wondered why your skin is still sensitive and a little pink/red even though you’ve switched to mineral

makeup? Mica may be the culprit.60% of mica frosts are linked to

child labour, and are mined illegally in India. Upon being educated about this, my view about the beauty industry didn’t look so beautiful anymore. That was until I stumbled across HAUT COSMETICS – a Canadian range that ticks all the desired boxes. HAUT goes beyond the organic expectations to offer a complete makeup range that provides a beautiful natural coverage, helping to heal and nourish the skin.

Whilst HAUT is naturally 100% vegan, mica-free, cruelty-free, paraben-free, petrochemical-free, artificial colour-free, artificial fragrance-free and more; what most impressed me is what they do put in their products. The loose powders contain clays and arrowroot. The BB creams and HDD creams (foundations) contain kakadu plum, rosehip oil and jojoba oil. The raw colour pigments contain spirulina, carrot root, liquorice root and apple peel.

always looking for new ways to support our clients and improve health. Our team of health practitioners is led by an amazing holistic integrated medical doctor.

At the clinic we support a lot of people experiencing major health challenges, plus many people that are looking for optimal health, peak performance and anti-ageing strategies.

I’m super passionate about supporting people to be healthy and happy (body, mind and spirit), ageing with wisdom and vitality and loving life at any age.

Earlier this year, I heard about an exciting brand new health technology. It is different to anything else available. Some health care professionals are saying this is the biggest health science

breakthrough in anti-ageing and athletic performance of our lifetime.

Always in the pursuit of new innovations to enhance the lives of our clients, I introduced this new skin gel, based on “Redox Signalling Molecule” technology, to the range of products we offer in the clinic.

When the product first landed, I knew it was going to support skin rejuvenation, reducing the visible signs of ageing. While I had researched the science behind these ‘redox signalling molecules’ and understood how powerful they could be in empowering the body’s own healing process, some of the benefits clients were reporting after introducing this gel were truly remarkable.

We know that ageing slows down the rate of cellular renewal. There is much hype around anti-ageing with

many products carrying a hefty price tag. By definition true anti-ageing needs to speed up the rate of cellular renewal. Redox signalling molecules are the body’s communication system at a molecular level – empowering cells with every single essential function. By topping up these molecules it increases critical communication between cells to ensure optimum renewal and replenishment.

I am thrilled to have another product that our clients can easily incorporate into their daily life, a product that is 100% safe, non-toxic, affordable, effective and can deliver a wide range of benefits.

JUSTIN PHILLIPS is a Practice Manager and Health Coach at a holistic and integrated medical clinic in Brisbane, with a range of modalities and cutting edge technologies. justinphillips.com.au

After years of being a stay-at-home mum, Janette decided to create a business that was a reflection of her

interest in fashion, style and ethical living. With a background in marketing, and a degree in Anthropology, Janette decided to utilise her skills and follow her passion for culture and her ideals for the pursuit of the greater good. And so the funky fashion house and gift ware shop ‘Eco Eccentric’ in Brighton, Brisbane was born!

And it’s a shopping experience you won’t forget… there are many organic and bamboo labels and the colour options and range of clothing is very unique, stylish and affordable.

Creating a shopping environment where all of the clothing and home wares has an ethical or sustainable base is paramount for Janette and it allows her to give back to the community and encourage people to be conscious of what they are wearing against their skin all day.

Janette says people are looking for a connection to the process in their shopping experience. All of her labels and designers have a solid ethical relationship to the villagers or manufacturers; there are no sweat shops and her business attracts the right kind of suppliers.

“Having the shop allows me to feel as if I am contributing to improve the poverty in the world, even if only a little. One thing I did learn is that people need to develop their own methods of income, to create independency not dependency.”

In the future Janette would love to travel to Burma and to create her own clothing and home wares range. She believes that the connections she has developed in the community would be conducive to tailoring a specific range to target people’s specialised fashion requirements.

Q: What inspired you to work in the pet industry?

A: Actually we fell into the pet industry, we both worked in totally different industries and that is how we met each other, I walked into David’s business one day selling advertising. David had a tile shop (he is a tiler by trade) and I worked for the Sunshine Coast Daily as an advertising consultant for 10 years. The day I walked into his business was the beginning of a wonderful relationship and the rest is history, we do have an amazing relationship.

I was sick of making money for everyone one else and wanted a new direction in my career and David swore he would never go into business again for himself.

For a very short time we went into selling fresh dog meats and now with what we know, were some very poor quality pet treats when we stumbled across a guy drying human consumption beef jerky. David and I saw the opportunity to do something totally different that was to

manufacturer high quality pet treats so we went ahead and purchased his commercial dehydrator. This was the beginning on a whole new adventure and a brand new business.

Q: What do you love most about your work?

A: The knowledge that we have gained from our work. We both grew up with family pets and have always loved our fur babies, so being able to create a range of totally nutritious pet treats has been a great sense of achievement for us and something we truly love. The one thing you always have to understand is that you can never learn enough about anything that you do, so the learning process is a constant and enjoyable thing.

The day that someone thinks they know everything is a sad day indeed.

Q: What is one thing people may not know about you and also one thing they may not know about your business?

A: The one thing most people do not know about our business is we are

the only manufacturers of pet treats in the world with our unique drying process. Our pet treats are Ultra-premium quality and fur babies will do anything for our treats which has been proven over the years with some very astounded pet owners. The one thing that people don’t know about David and I is the passion that we have for our own pets and other people’s pets and desire to create something so unique and nutritious for all the family pets out there.

Q: What are your plans for the next 12 months for Loyalty Pet Treats?

A: We have some new designs in the pipeline for some amazing new treats, we also want to keep expanding our export market as we find that the export market supports our concepts, ideas and production principles more than it is accepted domestically, not by the individual, but more so from the corporate end of the industry.

It’s a time for celebration during the festive season but it can also be very stressful for families and pets around

Christmas.I remember I had to euthanase ten

fl uffy patients within a week during one festive season. Many people may welcome new fl uffy family members as a Christmas gift but please remember that… there is so much responsibility involved and huge commitments we need to make. You are not getting a toy to play with but a little family member you need to care for over time and in the fi nal stage of their life.

Recently, I have encountered many owners who were faced with euthanasia options for their loved ones, especially those who were diagnosed with cancer.

Is there anything we can do except for chemotherapy, radiation and surgery (or when surgery is not an option)?

I have been treating various types of cancer and it is rewarding to see more happy faces with Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) treatment. Generally speaking, you may think only radiation or chemotherapy are the only options to treat an animal,

but that is not the only way. There are many things you can do to help increase the strength of their immune system to fi ght against cancer, instead of killing cancer cells and weakening the immune system with strong western treatments (chemotherapy and radiation).

Many conventional treatments (chemotherapy and /or radiation) may have side effects such as nausea, infl ammation of local areas, dryness, thirst, lethargy, depression, loss of appetite, diarrhoea… and these signs are also treatable with TCVM.

TCVM sees cancer as stasis, which means a slowing or obstruction in the fl ow of Qi in the body. There are many underlying causes (Qi /blood stasis, phlegm, dampness and toxins) that can lead to the development of cancer. Cancer can result from a variety of factors including emotional disharmony (or stress/anger), improper diet and exercise, and external pathogenic factors (such as chemicals).

TCVM practitioners fi nd a pattern of cancer and diagnose the cause(s) for each patient, then

1 My life is likely to last ten to fi fteen years. Any separation from you will be painful for me.

2 Give me time to understand what you want of me.

3 Place your trust in me – it’s crucial to my well-being.

4 Don’t be angry at me for long and don’t lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your

entertainment and your friends. I have only you.

5 Talk to me. Even if I don’t understand your words, I understand your voice when it’s speaking to me.

6 Be aware that however you treat me, I’ll never forget it.

7 Remember before you hit me that l have teeth that could easily crush the bones of your hand but

I choose not to bite you.

8 Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate, or lazy, ask yourself if something

might be bothering me. Perhaps I’m not getting the right food or I’ve been out in the sun too long or my heart is getting old and weak.

9 Take care of me when I get old; you, too, will grow old.

10 Go with me on diffi cult journeys. Never say, “I can’t bear to watch it.” or “ Let it happen in my

absence.” Everything is easier for me if you are there. Remember I love you.

Is your thyroid healthy? Did you know that thyroid disease is becoming increasingly common, particularly in Australia? It could be the result of many factors, such as an overwhelming stress load, chemical overload, increased autoimmune risk, or the depleted nutrient content in the soil our food grows in. Both selenium and iodine are low in many locations of Australian soil, both are important for optimal thyroid function. Both an over and under active thyroid can influence weight, infertility, mood, sleep, libido and menstrual problems.Much of the standard thyroid testing measures TSH, when in fact to truly diagnose a thyroid problem, the tests require more detail. T3 and T4 are the thyroid hormones that your body uses, so it is best to get those checked too.

Are you sleeping sufficiently? Are you stressed? If you are having difficulty sleeping it could mean that you have a melatonin-cortisol imbalance. Cortisol is the “fight or flight” response hormone, when it is high, melatonin levels can drop. Melatonin is what helps assist proper sleeping patterns. If you are under a lot of stress, your cortisol levels are likely to be out of balance, this then imbalances melatonin. A cortisol problem can throw many of your happy hormones out of balance.

Nutrient absorption and gut function.Your digestive system is like the root system of a tree, when the roots are healthy the tree is healthy. Did you know the digestive system is in fact a nervous system? It is called the Enteric Nervous System. This system has a huge role in the production of your brain’s happy chemicals, not to mention the huge role that it plays in absorbing nutrients for everyday bodily functions.Certain bacterias in the gut have the potential to produce an enzyme called Beta glucuronidase, this enzyme can increase oestrogen re-circulation. This may lead to oestrogen dominance. This imbalance can be linked to painful periods, PCOS, PMS, breast tenderness, irritability, weight gain, depression, skin conditions, fluid retention and lethargy.

What about Pyroluria?Pyroluria is a genetically determined metabolic condition. Those with elevated pyrroles usually have an increased demand for certain nutrients that are essential for neurotransmitter production, such as serotonin and dopamine. These are your happy brain chemicals! Pyrolurics are more likely to suffer with depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, autism, alcoholism, strong fatigue, temper outbursts,IBS, joint pain, memory loss or low stress tolerance. A simple urine test can confirm if you have elevated pyrroles.
