Ambient lightingfrom recessed fixtureswith dimming control inthe kitchen allows flex-ibility to adjust as needed

    Keep energyefficiency in mindSelect energy-efficient

lighting such as CFLsand LEDs for optimalenergy savings. Thisis especially importantin rooms where themost time is spent withthe lights on in order tosee the biggest energysavings impact. Manyenergy-efficient alterna-tives of today mirror thelight quality of the tradi-tional incandescent bulb,

providing the warm glowand dimming capabilities.

    Do your homeworkSavvy homeown-

ers should do a littleresearch before purchas-ing light bulbs to ensurecompatibility with theirfixtures. Be sure to matchup the bulb shape andapplication, choose theappropriate lumen, orbrightness level, andreview the light bulbpackaging for dimmableoptions.Make this holiday

season a cheerful occa-sion, and dont rely onoverhead lighting aloneto deck your halls andwalls. With a layeredapproach and a littlelighting know-how, youllcreate the welcoming andwarm atmosphere perfectfor family, friends andgood cheer.

    AppetizersSmall, bite-sized foods

can play a big role at yourparty while keeping guestsfrom nibbling on the maincourse. With some cre-ative thinking, you can addholiday flair to traditionalsnacks or offer some-

thing your guests neverexpected. Here are someideas to consider:Who doesnt love eating

dessert before the meal? You can make miniaturetreats out of your favoritepie fillings. Simply use puffpastry dough, shaped intosmall disks, and line theinsides of an oiled min-iature muffin pan. Fill thecups with apple, cherryor other pie filling. For aholiday twist, use pumpkinor pecan pie filling. Bakethese petite treats until thefilling has set, then remove

them from the oven and letthem cool before serving.Wantons make great

finger foods and are quiteeasy to make. To makesweet and savory holidaysnacks, mix cream cheese, shredded ham (or bacon)and green onions in a bowl, and season to taste withsalt, pepper and garlic.Fold a teaspoon of the mix-ture into each wanton skinand seal the edges withwater. Deep fry the finishedwantons at 350-degreesfor 10-15 seconds. Servethese with a simple apricot

sauce made of apricotpreserves, fresh ginger andred wine vinegar.Canaps are a classy

alternative to finger sand-wiches, and their open-faced style makes themvisually appealing. Cutflatbread into bite-sized tri-angles and top with variousspreads such as creamcheese, pimento cheesespread or pesto sauce. You can use a pastry bagwith a decorative tip to addstyle to the canaps. Thenadd your choice of meat orvegetables, or both.
