VisitHebrides produces an annualbrochure with details of transport, accommodation, activities andevents. Its websites are also excellentfor planning.VisitHebrides26 Cromwell Street, Stornoway, Isleof Lewis HS1 1DD Tel 01851 703088 visithebrides.com

GETTING OUT AND ABOUTis all part of a visit here. This Guidedescribes the huge number of placesto explore, but the visitor must be ableto reach them in the first place.Distances can be deceptively large, it isnearly 200km (130mi) from one endto the other! The roads are quiet, with little heavy traffic. Most areexcellent, but many are still singletrack, so please take care.

The empty roads, and generally flatcountry make for excellent cycling, but beware there are steep hills, and

the wind can be strong. Many peopletake their bikes with them. Walkingis also an option, but watch out forvehicles on the single track roads.Getting lifts is also no problem aspeople will often stop and ask if youreally want to walk!

LOCAL TRAVEL INFORMA-TION The Visitor InformationOffices in Stornoway, Tarbert,Lochmaddy, Lochboisdale andCastlebay are the best places to seekthe latest timetables and informationon travel operators. The annualbrochure has details of travel services.

BUSES Local bus services connectmost of the main settlements, as wellas with inter-island ferries. The “Skyeand Western Isles Travel Guide” givesdetails of all of these routes and times.

INTER-ISLAND TRAVELThere are connecting flights betweenStornoway, Benbecula and Barra.CalMac operates vehicle ferriesbetween Harris and North Uist aswell as between South Uist andBarra.

CAR AND BIKE HIREIndependent transport is stronglyrecommended in order to reach mostof the places and sites of interest men-

tioned in this guide, many of whichare “off the beaten trail”. A car is virtu-ally essential to those with time limi-tations, while a bike allows a muchmore leisurely approach. The ideal isof course to combine the two. Thereare car and bike hire outlets on all themain islands.

TAXIS, COACH TOURSAND GUIDING SERVICESTaxis are available in all locations, andare especially useful when catchingferries or flights. Minibus and coachtours are also run by several compa-nies. Guiding is available from quali-fied Western Isles Tour Guides.

PETROL STATIONS Apartfrom in the main centres of popula-tion, filling stations tend to be few andfar between. Most are closed onSunday, and while some are open forlong hours, others are not. It is best tokeep your tank topped up!

TRIPS, CRUISES ANDACTIVITIES Wildlife cruises toislands, hillwalking and rambling, guided walks, sub aqua, sea kayaking, trout and salmon fishing, ridingschool, rock climbing and golf aresome of the many organised activitieson offer.

During the research for this book wellover 500 books, periodicals, guides, maps and other publications were con-sulted as well as many individuals andwebsites. The author wishes to thankeveryone who has been of assistanceduring his years of wanderings in theWestern Isles., as well as those who didthe essential job of proof-reading.

The following bibliography is a distilla-tion of some of the books on the area. Some are essential reading, others

depend on personal interests. One ofthe best starting places is HamishHaswell-Smith’s book on the ScottishIslands, but then the author is a fellowsea-lover.

Many locally-produced leaflets, guidesand small books are available producedby the Tourist Board, Scottish NaturalHeritage and other bodies or individu-als. In particular the walks leaflets byVisitHebrides and SNH are excellent.Bill Lawson produces a good series of lit-

tle books on chapels and genealogy, while the various heritage centres andmuseums also do useful local guides.

Apart from the Baltic Bookshop inStornoway, many shops throughout theisles stock local books. The TICs andmuseums are also good sources of localpublications, some of which are free, while others may be charged for.

MAPS

Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 Landranger maps numbers 8,13,14,18,22 and 31 cover the Western Isles, while the Pathfinder 1:25,000 series coversthe same area in 36 sheets. The latest maps have the newer Gaelic place names. The Western Isles Tourist Board also produces a useful map withboth new Gaelic and older English place names at a scale of 1:125,000. Also useful is the Ordnance Survey 1:250,000 Travelmaster sheet num-ber 3 “Western Scotland and the Western Isles”.
