The Long March Back to Campus and Through Second Semester Requires EncouragementBy James & Mary Game, CFA Chairman

HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Be assured, your cadet has been counting down the days to being able to come home for winter furlough since August 15th! During these last few months, your child has adapted to The Citadel’s environment and you will definitely notice a difference and be pleased with the fact that your child has grown in self-discipline, academics, physical presence and in the ability to handle unfamiliar situations successfully. Congratulations to you and your cadet for enduring these past few months!

Second semester c a n s e e m particularly arduous, especially to Knobs. D a y s a r e l o n g , winter skies are the co lo r o f a du t y uniform shirt, and the winds coming off the Ashley River

either takes no prisoners and chills you to the bone or teases you with a hint of spring, sometimes within the same week! Fourth Class knobs have endured a long, tough first semester and are hesitant for anymore long structured days, Third Class cadets have simply enjoyed not being knobs anymore, Second Class cadets have adjusted to having a bit more responsibility, freedom and getting their Citadel blazers/ties and First Class cadets are still staring at their Citadel Rings with a mixture of bemusement and relief.

As the parents of a junior cadet that has been where you are, we would like to o f f e r y o u o u r p e r s o n a l perspective about the f i rst lengthy furlough for Knobs. When your child gets home they may tend to re-immerse themselves in the carefree

high school days lifestyle. At this point in their lives, it is easy for them to ask: “Why do I have to march to breakfast every day, attend all my classes, do PT daily, study every

night and follow orders from upperclassman when I could be having it much easier like my friends that have more freedom at their colleges.” This winter furlough gives you, as a parent, a wonderful opportunity to help your child remember why they chose The Citadel in the first place. Your reassurance during the initial days at home can be critical. However, when it’s time for you to help them get ready to return at the end of the furlough, it is normal for your cadet to have mixed feelings as very few knobs escape the dreaded feeling of leaving home and returning to the structured life at The Citadel.

We as parents have a job to do and our challenge is to remain positive and offer as much encouragement as possible. As our cadets are learning, being a good leader includes knowing when to be encouraging and supportive, without being judgmental. Of course, timing and technique are critical and only you will know when and how it is right to encourage your child. So what can you do to support and encourage your cadet during the furlough and once they return to campus in January?

appreciate their commitment and accomplishments to this point. No great accomplishment comes without endurance and focus. Let your cadet know how proud you are, how proud your friends are, and how proud their own friends are that they are sticking with it and get them to talk about their Citadel friends and experiences. Focus on the future. Remind your cadet that one day he or she will be able to wear the ring, be one of the few who hold a Citadel diploma and know that they have succeeded in a challenging quest. Limit the pampering, but pour on tons of love and recognition for their success thus far. Focus points for second semester should be: Corps Day in March, spring break and recognition day-this is a huge milestone for your knob! Send written encouragement letters, emails and packages. It gives them something to keep, share and re-read time and again.

Please do not hesitate to contact us for any questions as you prepare for your child’s return from winter furlough. On behalf of the entire Citadel Family Association, we extend to you our warmest wishes for a joyful holiday season and a prosperous New Year to your entire family!

Regimental Commander’s Letterby Zachary Holliday, C/Col, SCCC 2010

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of The Citadel,

I never anticipated the types of leadership challenges and obstacles that I would have to overcome as I prepared to return this year to The Citadel. None the less, this year has been one of the most rewarding and educational periods of my life.

We take pride at The Citadel in a tiered system of l e a r n i n g t h a t ultimately develops one into the leader of pr inciple and d i s c i p l i n e , t h e leader of duty and

honor, the leader of courage and commitment. I say that to say this…for you who have 4th classmen who are debating whether coming back is the right decision for them, or for those of you who have upperclassmen debating whether they want to continue with the daily grind, the learning curve is not over until we walk across the stage at the end of four years.

I remember back to the end of my knob year and thought I had made it through it all; I thought I had reached the climax of my cadet development and that the remaining time at The Ci tade l was in tended to maintain that level and to establish the new found morals and discipline as a way of life. I quickly found out upon my return however that it was just the beginning of an experience that I know will put cadets ahead of their counterparts when we begin to explore opportunities outside of The Citadel.

There is so much to be gained from the full completion of the leadership development program

here. As I come to the end of my cadet career, I reflect back and strangely enough at times yearn to do it all over again. The values, lessons, friends, and experiences can never be replaced or taken away from me and every day I thank God for the strength and support to persevere through what has been the biggest challenge to me up to this point in my life.

I wish you all safe travel and good t i m e s a s w e a p p r o a c h t h e holiday season. The Citadel has a un ique way o f p u t t i n g t h e s e seasons and the time spent with family in a new perspective for all of our cadets and giving us a new found appreciation for all the little things that we have often overlooked previously. Take care and stay well.

To All CFA Members:

We are currently looking for assistance in designing the new CFA window sticker. As you have seen, we have updated the CFA logo which is quite distinctive. Please submit any design suggestions, drawings or layouts to the CFA at [email protected].

CFA Company RepsRING DAYby Jerry Shealy

As the cadets entered McAlister field house I was taken back to that rainy August, Charleston morning in 2007 filled with anticipation and fear we unloaded our boy’s meager belongings and watched as he entered the gate that will mold him into a cadet. If I could have script our Citadel experience, my dreams would have fallen far short of reality.

We watched him grow, accepting the challenges that only The Citadel presents. He persevered as a Knob, experienced the responsibility and honor of rank, while exhibiting the selfless loyalty and devotion to duty demanded by the corp.

We joined The Citadel family, as CFA volunteers we became part of this amazing experience. Greeting and giving assurances on matriculation day, enjoying parades and ceremonies, while making many new friends and forming relationships that will last our lifetime.

He stands in line waiting to hear his name, as he crosses McAlister my heart overflows with pride and my mind fills with memories. Greeted with a hand shake and hug he was handed a band of gold. The reward that ties him to all who have gone before. “The Ring” that shows the world, our son is a “Citadel Man”. Tyler Jennings Shealy, November Company
